Add a mod that allows you to see how much HP a mob/player has, and when hitting a mob/player, just above the hotbar, add a small amount of text that tells you how much damage you have dealt, for example [ - 2.00], and [2.00] means 1 heart and [4.00] means 2 hearts etc.
