MRMINECHEST recently suggested a player hider mod, and while this in itself can be considered a hack, I think the idea around improving performance through culling players is good.

My different idea is for there to be an option to render players as a single colour simple rectangle or with no skin (only a solid colour) to reduce the ram consumption and lag by stopping the computer from having to render a hundreds of full player models (arms, legs, head, skin) at a time.
