DirectStorage was engineered to provide faster, direct access to NVMe SSD’s, which lets games use the GPU for faster decompression
With storage technologies hitting lowest cost points imaginable there is zero benefit to compression of this suggestion...ignoring if it was free
More fixed features on a CPU aren't going to be free on die space needed.
It wouldn't "just work" though, you would break compatibility with virtually every system made before it if you relied on it heavily. And showing the benefits would be incredibly difficult and time consuming, think of how little people care about ray-tracing today, apply that same approach. There are already many competing compression algorithms but most of the largest content is simply not compressible by design.
Video codecs are compression, you can't simply compress something that's already compressed even more. Images are all compressed, JPEG is a form of compression.
all social media already compresses images down fairly low compared to what source can be
there is no solution for generic compression that would actually create any usable size savings
Yeah I gotta agree with Tuan and Rlocke. Not sure the point.
They already compress everything, like with https://github.com/facebook/zstd
Along with converting everything to compressed formats and codecs
