i made the mistake of not changing taverns immediately, and now I cannot figure out how to do it at all! How do I proceed to Halflington?

Go to the title screen and click the arrows next to the location (probably Riverbottom) until you get to another tavern!

cos before I hit continue, because I thought it was all 1 save file

I'm not sure but you if you press continue I think it only continues from your previous tavern (not the save file) so probably yes
