Can someone tell me an easy way to remove flash shadow from around the head of a subject. (I know I should have moved the subject further forward from the background) I can remove the bulk of the shadow but am having problems with the finer work around the head.

Difficult to answer without the image. Nowadays, select subject, lift it to its own layer, and the remove tool on the background might be weapons of choice.
