double click to the solid color layer head from there you can change the color.

The problem is that the subject is sheet music. Would that not be difficult to select an mask automatically?

You might get an answer way faster by posting the image. If it is a picture of a sheet of music, using levels or curves might fit your goal.

Why not fill a background layer with colour and see your sheet music to multiply presuming it’s black on white?
