Hi guys!

Just wondering why I'm getting my background colours looking patchy! I'm currently in RGB color mode. I've tried switching to CMYK but it dims the color a lot.

Thank you! 😊

Hi, you’ll get better answers by giving information about the layer structure (are there groups, (clipping) masks, smart objects…), and posting a fullscreen screenshot showing the layers panel unfurled around the layer of the paw.

This is called color banding. It happens for several reasons. If you’re switching images to and from CMYK, using low resolution files, or using a smaller bit depths you will encounter this.

So if you’re editing and saving to JPEG format or PNGs at a bit depth of 8, you’re not using high-quality formats for art.

Try saving all your art/editing files as PSD or PSB, and only export flat JPEGs, PNGs, and WEBp when you’re ready to share a finished artwork on social media or websites.

Learn about higher resolutions, higher bit-depth, and some dithering/add noise techniques.

Hello!
Thank you for the detailed answer.
I'm always saving and editing as PSD before I export so still a little confused as to why the colour banding.

I do use a lot of 'mood board' reference images and place them around the artboard as I work so could that be causing me to switch to and from CMYK?
