the ants are a part of the image, I'd personally preserve the wildlife status and keep it as is. As for changing the background, it doesn't need changing, just some TLC to make it look a bit more pleasant. You've shot at night, using flash, so that's always going to make the shot look unnatural imho. For selecting, opening the background layer in Photoshop, duplicate the layer (ctl J on a PC), then "select subject", which should, as the name suggests, select the subject (snake). You can use that to create a mask with an adjustment layer, invert that mask if you want to treat the background.
