#How do I get the difference between 2 images

I have one image, and another image that is exactly the same as the original, except this has a new thing merged. So both images are the same except for that new added thing. I want to substract both images so I only get that new thing in a new layer.

How do I get this?

#

I want to end up with this

#

but the images are merged in the second layer, thats the problem

Put both images in the same document, align them perfectly and change the blend mode of the top layer to difference. The untouched pixels will be black, select the black to mask the duck.

Are they of the same resolution, same color profile? Are they perfectly registered?

#

Difference and not hard mix mode?

same resolution same color

#

its getting detected the difference (background becomes black) its just that the duck doesnt look right

#

looks like this

Yes, select the black, and use it to mask the duck.(you could even run treshold to get b&w)

with magic wand?

For instance.
Or, If you add treshold and change the middle point, you could select all, copy, open a copy of the image with the duck, add a layer mask, alt+click the layer mask thumbnail and paste.

No, similar colors are black and the duck is colored based on the difference in color (for each channel) with the other image. Some of the grey color in the wings is almost the same as the clouds, so it is dark grey.

Do a merge all (Ctrl+alt+E) on top and adjust it so that it has only black and white.
