If i use part of an image for my design, how do i know if it breaks copyright? How do i know if an image cant be used, or how much do i need to change it for it to be allowed?

It will vary by country, might be wise to state where you live (and maybe where the source comes from) . Some companies are more agressive than others. (Nintendo for instance) If you can use your own material, the better.
