#Bevel/emboss and contouring

Hi all. I am trying to re-create these boxes with golden bevelled edges and contouring. I know they were made in PS, it's just a matter of finding the correct bevel/emboss and contour settings.

This is a zoomed in scan of a print, so forgive me for the quality.

I have also noticed a couple things that look weird:

  • On the left box, the left edge almost looks rippled, whereas all the other edges are mostly uniform.
  • On the right box, the bottom edge looks like it's an entirely different colour and is devoid of much contouring, specifically the light reflection, whereas the top edge has a strong reflection. What is the reason for this? It almost looks like it's painted over in yellow.

Any advice is helpful, especially regarding the issues noted above.

Difficult to say exactly, but I think the rippled effect will be done with altering the standard contour shape and giving it waves

#

For example see here with one of the preset contours

#

It's really possible that that contour have been altered from one of the presets

#

To do so, click on the thumbail here

#

to open the contour curves

#

And move the points as you see fit

#

When you move your points and curves, you can see the result in real time. When you're done, I would advise you save it, so as to apply it directly from a layer style instead of reinventing the wheel 🙂

#

And obviously you can play with colours here

So I have been experimenting with the gloss and contour curves, and I think that's the right path, but the thing that's giving me pause is that the bottom edge of both the left and right boxes do not seem to follow the "rules" for the bevel and contour effects.

On the left box, there is no gloss on the bottom edge despite the fact that the top edge is quite shiny. With a top-down light angle, the sheen should be identical on the bottom and top edges. As far as I know, there is no way to make the gloss not be the same on opposing sides.

Similarly, the right box has sheen on the top edge, but the bottom edge is almost an entirely different colour (the top is gold while the bottom is more yellow).

Is there perhaps some masking oddity going on here? I almost wonder if the creator intended to mask the right box similarly to the left box, but did something different and accidentally just made it hard yellow.
