Lens flare problem!

hey yall, im using some lens flares in my file and i want to merge these lens flares with my image but i have problems doing so. i removed the edges of the lens flare images and i then select the 'screen' option ((right above like the layers) but when i try to merge it with my actual image it goes back to the original state and i ofc dont want that. does anyone know how to like apply the 'screen' option or an other way to merge the lens flares

Can you make them a smart object instead?

Actually, it doesn't matter

if I whack this lens flare over the top and pick screen blend mode for the flare, and then merge them together, it merges/combines perfectly.

i tried smart object but it didnt help

Chuck your lense flare on the TOP and mark the lens flare as the screen layer

keep flowers as 'normal'
