This isn't new, but I see a lot of content for overlays, templates, etc and many of them are not layered in PSDs or do they even need to be?

I have a layered PSD snow globe file, many nowadays are not even layered you just put whatever you want int he empty space, I'm not sure how that's even good quality or if that's even an issue?

My point is are layered assets even needed?

If you need an overlay, I think the minimum is that it should be catering for the alpha channel, as in accepting transparencies, so PNGs and PSDs are OK, but not Jpegs.
PSD with layers will have probably elements that you can move independently whereas obviously PNGs will be static in nature.

#

That depends what you need to be done with the specific overlay

I'm just used to getting PSDs most people sell them as PNGs (overlays) or backgrounds JPGs I guess it offers them more protection for the artwork they sell for reproduction or something but I'm more concerned about quality

I did these, nothing but JPGs except for the heads, the heads I already had in PS

There is no real loss of quality with PNGs, it's the jpegs that are more concerning

yeah so that background is on a JPG I guess I could convert it to PNG but the info is already lost; I'm just annoyed artists don't sell them in PSD, that would ultimately be the best IMHO

what about using SVGs?

#

I've found those are almost lossless and do well in PS

SVGs are for vector work, so if you got an illustration to work with that's ok (Think logo, drawings done in vector etc)
If it's a photo, then know that your svg is just an iamge (raster) embedded in a svg format, it's still raster. It just mastes it easier to display on a website

The limitation of a raster format still apply.
