Trying to recreate this text. A path gets the general shape right, but i'm not sure about the "italics" of the text.

There is no easy way to distort a text in this way. The standard functions do not lead to the desired result.
I would probably do the distortion in Illustrator.
menu: Object -> Envelope Distort > Make with Mesh ...
Not easy to do without experience, but in my opinion this would be the only way to get enough control over the distortion.

I was kinda thinking that I may have to use illustrator, which I'm not as experienced with. However, I also need the method to be easily repeatable so that I can do it for different ranks.

Repeatable? Theoretically, you could reuse the mesh for new text. In practice, however, I assume that the words will be of different lengths. Therefore, the following distortions are completely unpredictable.
