Complete beginner, how would I go around putting an image behind bars? It looks more complicated than 1 min youtube examples showed

you would need to select that green barring and make it into a new layer either via copy or cut, for a non destructive workflow i recommend copy. from there you can place your image in between the newly created layer and your original pipe
of course you will have to mask out the original green bar in the original image by either painting over it or filling, etc

Similar to what col3 said but you might be able to get away with cutting out a circular area where the gate/bars are and just using Advanced Blending on those pixels. :)
