#.nef files crash complete pc
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
I don't really have an idea on why is it so, but just asking a few questions here trying to figure out why
When you open a .nef file, does it shut down immediately or does it manage to open it somehow.
If it does open, with which app/software does it try to open it?
thanks for the fast response it like opens very short and crashes the full pc

assuming you have bridge installed (you should), does the preview thumbnail shows for that file?
Which is the software that opens it by default?
erm bridge (no idea sorry)
ps 24
It will probably not be Photoshop proper
that is bridge, and is shipped with photoshop, the two apps work together
the app that SHOULD open a .nef is not Photoshop proper, it's called ACR (adobe Camera Raw)
oke installing bridge atm
So what I am trying to determine is if you have ACR installed (you should), if it's up to date, or if something else has happened
locate the file in bridge, and try to visualise it, but don't open it by the menu or double clicking on it
right click on the thumbnail and tell me what you see
at the top
open, open with, open with Camera Raw?
pc crashes when opening bridge for second time now 🥲
do you just aside from everything have any idea why pc shutdown instead of like gives error
also check if you're up to date
it could be a RAM error (bad RAM) it happened to me in the past
even on a fresh new build pc?
On a fresh no even started yet PC 😬
like long story short we build this pc for the client
but luckily, that meant the guarantee was running!
I would check with one of those RAM detection software
memtest?
ah then i guess i trust my own expertise on that then 😉
All and all, it's not typical Photoshop behaviour. What you should have if you have an issue with PS, Br or ACR would be an error, or even a GPU issue like display glitches etc...
i understand the question and i cant 100% guarantee that but looks legit (installed by client not us)
From me to you, if you manage to get a full screenshot of Photoshop, no need for an image to be opened, I can tell you
Like the full thing
how do i get there?
if it's open then a full screenshot will do
and suggestions
No need for a translation, it's not text based
i mean all my settings are dutch
no worries, I need the screenshot
nothing else
It could be in Flemish it would be the same to me 😉
The app seems legit
it should be OK on Photoshop's end
I would double check if it's not something on the hardware side honestly
It looks like the issue I got, although of course there is so many things that could go wrong
You could also check with another RAM hungry software (Blender? whatever)
and see if you got the same issues
i think i just do a cinebench
anyway thanks for now atleast i know it is not a setting in Photoshop
From what I see it should work corrcetly.
But .nef files are raw files from Nikon cameras, and let's say it's the latest update from Nikon, you need to make sure ACR is up to date to be able to open it.
Also Raw files are usually very, very big, hence why it may have been an issue
like i can open some of them in windows photos but then they show some weird colours
So refer to the versions from the screenshot I sent earlier and notify the client if their versions aren't up to date...
atm im doing memtest so cant check but i respond later
I guess Windows Photos can somewhat read them but RAW files are very specific file types and usually aren't read by anything
yeah windows store had a plugin i had to download
The client may have Nikon's proprietory app installed on this PC, that may make it possible to open them)
Well ACR (or Nikon's own app) are the only real apps that can open RAW files reliably
A few others too but they are few and far between. As I say it's very specialised and usually come with retouching/colour correction features
yeah i can see it showing like a preview and then refreshes and becomes clearer
but the fact that i install bridge open it and then it crashes is not something i liked seeing tbh
anyway i learned alot thanks for now and im patiently waiting the memtest
thanks i go check that aswell

I concur that a complete crash points to a hardware issue.
@marsh moat hi after alot of back and forth im back here to tell you everything i found out
so memtest seems fine and stuff but when i tried to run cinebench (a benchmark program) it first started like 30min of unzipping the download wich is extremely strange for a 3gb file and once it was downloaded it instantly crashed just like PS24 so im sorry for dragging everyone on this but its definitely a pc issue i just couldnt reproduce the issue but now i can so thanks for giving me guidance on this one much appreciated gonna fresh install windows monday on a new ssd and see if that fixed the issue have a great weekend
Good luck with that. Fingers crossed!
I’d reseat the RAM, and check all connections.
@marsh moat it turns out the PSU wasnt heavy enough im still suprised it wasnt but with a new more power one its working properly also with cinebench 👼
The mysteries of electricity 🙂
I could show you the power adapters (emphasis on plural) that my computer came with, when I received them by mail, I thought I was about to run one of those hydroponic "farms" 😂
🤣 yeah it was a prebuild but something went wrong in the selection process i guess and it was 100 W less then it shouldve been 😅
lets just say i learned a valuable lesson and i hope i havnt wasted too much of anyone's time if i ever need help with photoshop related stuff again i let you all know
