I want to eventually convert this to an SVG for my 3d project so I want this to look as clean as possible for th end result. What would be the best way to go about smoothing the edges, as well as making the text look cleaner overall?

One way to smooth the edge (sometimes with mixed results) would be to apply a "median" filter (filter>noise> median)
That said, do you have any idea of the program you will use to vectorise the artwork? Because most have a smoothing option when vectorising (for example Illustrator does)
Probably more effective to do it at the moment of the conversion...
Otherwise, redrawing migh also be a good idea, and redrawing it in vector directly, using a vector path/shape. Saves you the hassle, since it's not a difficult shape.

Hi, I concur with Sandrine, redrawing in Illustrator might be faster than deleting and removing points.
