The setup in the image should be a disaster
The metal braziers seem like a disaster waiting to happen as well though.
IRL I wouldn't let it get anywhere near being inside my house.
also could be related to settler skill at the station
Could be implemented as an area of effect where sparks strong enough to cause fire could jump. For example, campfire have 1 tile danger zone, making danger zone 3x3 area with campfire being the centre. And pyre could have 2 tile danger zone since it is much larger fire, causing danger zone to be 6x7.
This will require the implementation of flammability value of materials, which positively affect the fire-disaster-chance. So, don't store your sticks right next to campfire maybe!
Also don't build a gazebo with thatched roof if you want to have a peaceful picnic underneath.
As @opal ermine pointed out, cook's skill level could modify the fire-disaster-chance negatively, but never make it zero. Pyre on the other hand not care about any skill level of any settler.
While a station with open fire is active, it could randomly throw sparks every 15 in-game minutes to random direction. If the unlucky tile has a material made of flammable material, game calculates the fire-disaster-chance (assume 10% for wooden chair) and then game picks a random number between 1 and 100. If random number is smaller than fire-disaster-chance, we got a problem 🔥
If we want to have wooden furniture around brazier but don't want to risk big fires, we could wax them, as in fire-proofing varnish.
Those are some good points, but I suspect that that would be very resource heavy. Sure 1 or 2 fires would be fine but when you have a few dozen braziers or so burning happily on max setting it would be an entirely different story.
Implement spark such that they are arrows thrown towards a random direction within 2 tiles every 15 minutes. This implementation could also benefit from wall coverage, so that in case there is a wooden bed right behind the stone wall, stone wall would get hit instead since it provides coverage. After it lands, you can calculate the fire-disaster-chance.
I imagine that the demand this mechanism adds would be similar to an archer shooting once every 15 minutes. If you have a total of 120 open fire buildings, demand would be similar to 8 archers shooting every in-game minutes. Not nothing, but not too much either.
Alternatively, each building could have spark trigger value, which would decide how often a building spawns a spark. The pyre and camp-fire would spawn spark the most often, causing a spark every 15 minutes. but a brazier and torch may only spawn a spark every 1 hour or 2.
Actually I think it is somewhat implemented. I had a smokehouse standing against a wooden wall. Then raiders came and started to smash the smokehouse. I was able to stop them before the smokehouse was totally destroyed but now there was fire spreading around the smokehouse and it spread to the wooden wall too. I had a couple of sweaty minutes there before I was able to extinguish the fire 😂
I do like the idea of fire accidents, I feel like right now there are not enough "accident events" like a settler having a mishap while farming and needing medical attention. really only when raiders come to burn down or destroy buildings.
I feel like if we factor that in we should also factor intensity in. if a candle or braizer is lower intensity, it is less likely to spark a flame. where as burning at max output will cause more fires. I also thought it was dumb that you could have a came fire in a house and not have to worry about it burning things down.
This might also make interesting buildings where as you might have limestone block or limestone around the camp fire for a few squares to insure nothing burns down.
I also dont want my game so bogged down with calculations on fire that I cannot have fun or so much of a chance of fires that my game becomes going medieval: Fire fighter edition LOL.
All said though, I like this idea and feel like there should be more varied mishaps and events, some I would like to see events that notify you (like settlers joining or raiders) some just random events that happen.
