It would be nice if we could open/close the portcullis from the side or even top, if we embed it in a gate house. Not sure if we can already do that, but the shape of the blueprint suggests we cant. It would make sense for it to be a variant of the standard, so you can choose where it can be operated from.
Would mean that it could be an objective to get to the switch to open it, when we get the ability to raid other settlements (or if the enemy AI is so tasked).

Definitely necessary for portcullis, that's the whole point. Can we pin people under it as it closes? haven't made one yet either
My biggest critique about the current position is that its impossible to place a portcullis right in front of a gate (due to the lever/winch you need some space in between.
yeah, porticullis are meant to sit in front of the actual gate to protect it from things like battering rams, so it'll likely have its opening/closing mechanism above it
Yeah, make it on the floor above it so I can trap the raiders in my castle walls.
yeah, a nice death trap was my thinking. Let a few in, and slam.
I've found its pretty fast to shut a portcullis (relative to multiple gates), and so I have put it in front of my gates - but as you say - I have to put quite a gap. This way I can keep the gates open to tempt the enemy towards my primary defences, and then slam it shut at the last second - and then close the gates... although its a bit fiddly selecting the gates etc. when they are embedded in a gate house - pause is your friend!
