Nah, the overpopulation thing is very proven by statistics and the DNR closely manages it. Thats why you only get so many deer tags per year to legally hunt. Because we wiped out all the wolves, whitetail would otherwise have a severe overpopulation problem and we'd see even more automotive accidents too.

However this obviously doesn't stand up for all animals that are hunted. My dad got an elk a few years back (we spent a like 2 years eating it lol) and I do think those are overpopulated?

We deem that isn't worth the cost to save the deers life, but it would be worth the cost to save the humans life. Why is that? Youll need to show me why you think that should be changed. Maybe it should be, but im assuming that is just what we view as normal.

I'm not saying we must start to save every squirrel as this would be logistically impossible, but we can also not go out of our way to make things worse.
As for the first part, if there was a 100% guarantee that you'd both die if one wasn't killed then maybe, sure, granted we could just feed the second you in this case. But in the case of a deer, they can just go munch a little further to the left and not die, grass grows pretty much everywhere, and I can guarantee you most hunters aren't only hunting the poor deer living in a rocky desert with no food that would die tomorrow either way.

And again, you are assuming that the decisions people took historically were all rational, just like with before with "you can't say this isn't ok without saying we've been in the wrong for all of history", history is not an argument when it comes to ethics as most people never really think about ethics, or else were making particularly ill-founded assumptions to justify their ethical systems (take the conquering of the west to cite one more)

As for your deer overpopulation problem, we have the bio engineering technology to regulate wild life population in a softer way, we could diminish how many babies they make by dropping food with hormones around them, iirc it has already been done, but we don't do it because people find wildlife hunting fun and because of the aforementioned egocentrism we want to see ourselves as greater than everything else so we don't see a need to actually go out of our way to be humane for a minute

We are basically living in a trolley problem where you can either run over wildlife, or pull the lever and not run over them but we found the lever too hard to pull so we instead hopped in the trolley

I personally share Camu's view on human worth, we are just instinctly incentivised to care about other humans, and that's fine and fair, we should take care of other people for as much as human life doesn't have any additional intrinsic value compared to squirrel life, it doesn't even put as at a moral obligation to care about squirrel life, but it doesn't give us any high ground over squirrel life

Killing the deer so that most other deer can live better lives and so that ticks don't go rampant is the best realistic option because humans are not comfortable with reintroducing wolves. Those deer were going to get eaten by the wolves but since they are gone we get them instead. It is better than removing the wolves and doing nothing to manage deer populations. I actively maintain the land that deer live in by removing the invasive species of plants they can't eat and replant natives.
