Its REALLY hard to time it.
There was not a good communication system in place.

You wanna get close, but also getting too close could 💀 someone.
So, nerve wracking lol.

Before:
Parts used to be cheap AF, there was new products weekly or daily, new competing software's and different tuning systems.
Always an excuse to make a new rig, and cheap enough to do so.
We would egg each other on "bro WTF you can't stop flying you haven't broken all 5 of your quads this week yet."
FPV was new and everyone was hungry for new spots and would find something new and cool all the time.
Cops nor karens cared about quads and just wanted to say hi.
Basically no laws to be concerned about if you were responsible.

Now:
Parts are redonk level costs compared to then, only a few truly new things a year.
All the cool spots within a days driving distance have been found used and played out or ruined.
Which has reduced peoples willingness to come out and instead of 7+ PPL each weekend, now its a miracle to get 4 once a month.
Only new construction is the remaining freestyle fresh haven, but security alert cams have really put a hamper on that as internet of things increases.
Cops and karen's care.
Laws and licenses to worry about jeopardizing.

To go to your gaming analogy:
Games aren't dead, nor is the increased cost a truly prohibitive factor for most.
Especially when piracy is considered.

But some of the magic is gone in some ways.
The laziest example of this is old games used to usually ship complete and working.
Now many need a few release patches to become functional or fix things overlooked in a rush.

Games are certainly not dead.
But some of the passion and magic has gone.
Great indie or small team games are often still awesome and ship a complete game.

But when larger studios finish something.
Then purposely take a lot of it out and release it over months in a limited time FOMO rat race to pad and keep active player count up.

Then its becomes godamn side job and you have to consider putting it into a schedule in your week.
Lord forbid you just play 1 full day at the of the month or something.

Really makes it hard to enjoy stuff you might have when it's so heavily, shall we say "bastardized for the sake of corporate profits."

That's only like 1.4 drones a year.

One runs 9 or 10 props and carries a gopro some times.
The other was just kinda slapped together outa boredom and runs cheaper 8in props mainly.

Both r 2810 900kv motors, so on the smaller end.
They would struggle to run a 10in tri blade with much prefomance.

Simply cuz over the years bassiscaly every set I've seen has been broken then DIY repaired by the owner.
Including the set I had.

Having never seen them in person I'd recommend cobra SD over Ev800D.
For the extra bucks it seems worth it for probably better durability and definitely better optics.
Swappable batteries also.

Past that.
IMO look for used.
I find it hard to tell PPL the common reccomendation here of cobra X's.
Party cuz I've never used them myself.
But for that cost you can probably find near top of the line used binocular style goggles if you hold out and browse the classifieds rcg and ebay daily.

The point of the EV800D goggles is to basically just be a pair of goggles that you will upgrade from eventually. Do you happen to know if hhe broken ones were actual Eachine ones and not clones?

That aside, you can use EV800Ds after you upgrade to better goggles, since they convert to an FPV monitor, which is nice. You'll be upgrading from the Cobra SDs anyway, so my opinion is that you may as well be able to still use the goggles as a monitor after upgrading

Uhh hard to say on the clone thing.
My set was likely bought before the clones started I believe.
It needed charge port repair and a button repair over its lifespan.

Another set I saw a antenna port damaged but thankfully fixable.
Button and battery replacement on other.

Bi directional dshot does not directly feed betaflight the rpm of the motors, it only gets the number of times the magnetic feild flips over a given period. It has to derive the rpm from that and the number of magnets you set

Heavy compression :/ Youtube's compression tuning is excellent for bitrate, and they love to limit the bitrate to within an inch of its life, but with foliage, nothing but bitrate can save it.
