Which radio controllers are compatible with tbs crossfire nano? I'm a beginner to fpv and just bought my first fpv drone (flywoo lr4 analogue) with the tbs crossfire nano receiver. Will any controller be compatible with this drone out the box? If not which budget radio controller would be recommended for long range?

#

not 100% sure about the numbers there tho

#

Did you already receive the drone?

upbeat berry
#

yes

twilit torrent
#

dang

#

you could've ordered it with an ELRS receiver

#

that would've been the cheapest option by far

upbeat berry
#

damn

#

I heard the tbs offers better security when transmitting data

#

and elrs can be more comples to set up sometimes

twilit torrent
#

noone is trying to hack your drone

twilit torrent
upbeat berry
#

oh wow

#

i shoudve got the elrs instead

twilit torrent
#

That's what we recommend nowadays

upbeat berry
#

isnt there any radio transmitter I can use for it tho

#

ive been looking at the jumper t12

twilit torrent
#

It's cheaper, gets very similar range while being much more consistent, and the radios cost a lot less

fading plume
#

swap out the crossfire reciever for elrs

upbeat berry
#

but its out of stock

twilit torrent
#

RadioMaster TX12

upbeat berry
twilit torrent
#

wires up pretty much the same way

fading plume
#

can you solder?

#

if so super easy

#

its 4 wires

fading plume
upbeat berry
# twilit torrent RadioMaster TX12

yeah I looked at that as well but I was unsure whether I need to get a module for the module bay or whether i can just use it out the box

fading plume
#

for crossfire you need a mobule

twilit torrent
fading plume
#

for elrs or frsky you can use it out of the box

twilit torrent
#

for Crossfire, you need the TBS Tango 2 or Mambo
or a module

upbeat berry
#

interesting

twilit torrent
#

but all of those will cost more than grabbing an ELRS radio and an ELRS receiver

upbeat berry
#

would a multi protocol module work

twilit torrent
#

No.

fading plume
#

nope

upbeat berry
#

like the P4-in-1 Module

fading plume
#

we told you

#

you need to get a tbs tango 2 or mambo

#

or swap to elrs

twilit torrent
fading plume
#

true

twilit torrent
upbeat berry
#

true

fading plume
#

elrs is the cheapest way

twilit torrent
#

ELRS gets comparable range with a smaller antenna, while also being much more consistent..

#

the only negative difference is that Crossfire's 900MHz is slightly better at going through walls than ELRS's 2.4GHz

upbeat berry
#

yeah so better penetration

twilit torrent
#

marginally

upbeat berry
#

ill just save up for a crossfire module ig

twilit torrent
#

why?

#

to get a worse experience?

fading plume
#

not really much better tho

#

and ive had no issues with elrs

#

and its easier get help for elrs

#

as its open source

#

and also a lot of ppl here use elrs

twilit torrent
#

Crossfire is more of a pain to deal with when anything goes wrong, it only runs 150Hz for a short range (while ELRS runs that for miles), and the documentation is useless

#

There's a reason why 90% of the new stuff in the hobby is now ELRS-based

#

Costs nothing and performs great

#

you get the cake AND to eat it too 😂

upbeat berry
#

So how about I buy a elrs recierver and replace the crossfire witht that

upbeat berry
#

it costs like £15

twilit torrent
#

or.. what...

upbeat berry
twilit torrent
#

that's what we're talking about

#

rip the TBS Nano RX out

upbeat berry
#

😭

twilit torrent
#

and put in an ELRS receiver

#

EP1 / RP1 for the cheapest one

upbeat berry
#

yeah and once ive done that I could use the tx12 radio controller

fading plume
#

yep

twilit torrent
#

EP1 Dual or SuperD if you want real good signal (dual antenna diversity)

fading plume
#

as long as you get the elrs version

twilit torrent
#

and then, for the radio, get one of these:
TX12 MKII, Zorro, Boxer, TX16S MKII
(in ELRS variant)

The Boxer will get you roughly 2x the range of the other 3 because it has a more powerful transmitter.

#

but heck, people have gone stupid far on 250mW ELRS 😂

upbeat berry
#

whats the max power output on the boxer

twilit torrent
#

1000mW

fading plume
#

1w

upbeat berry
#

holy

twilit torrent
#

4x the power = 2x the range

upbeat berry
#

thats a lot

fading plume
#

zorro, tx12, tx16 all have 250mw

#

you wont need that much tho

upbeat berry
twilit torrent
#

there's no kill like overkill

fading plume
#

people go 10km on 10mw

twilit torrent
#

in ideal conditions

#

but like yeah

upbeat berry
fading plume
#

oh def

twilit torrent
#

with dynamic power, the radio will be chilling on 25mW most of the time 😄

fading plume
#

unless u have a good setup

upbeat berry
#

cool

#

I might ask for help on replacing the receivers

twilit torrent
#

There are a couple annoying teething issues surrounding ELRS (not necessarily caused by ELRS itself), but it's all well known and well documented
There are always a bunch of warnings and explanations in ELRS docs 😄

#

even down to specific radio firmware versions

#

They're unbelievably thorough.

#

Meanwhile, Crossfire be like
Oh, yeah, that feature we advertised doesn't work properly and no we won't fix the manual.

#

okay that was years ago but still, salty

upbeat berry
#

alright thanks for the help I was being a bit stupid when buying the drone shouldve bought the elrs version

twilit torrent
#

that's kinda why we ask people to ask first

#

Crossfire is still an okay system, but it just doesn't make sense for new pilots

upbeat berry
#

thought tbs would give it a larger range

twilit torrent
#

That's complicated

#

Crossfire has the 900MHz advantage, but its protocol is a lot less efficient

#

ELRS can run with a weaker signal

#

and still be fine

upbeat berry
#

crossfire = better penetration but inefficient protocols and elrs = little less penetration but efficient protocols

#

got it

twilit torrent
#

ELRS sends a lot less data over the air

#

so it can put more effort towards sending each bit

#

meaning that the receiver can hear each bit more clearly

#

Also.. modes: @upbeat berry
Crossfire has 150Hz or 50Hz. It can switch between them during flight, but this often causes disconnects or other weird behaviour.

ELRS (2.4GHz) has

FLRC: 1000Hz, 500Hz
FLRC is the "shorter range, minimum latency" protocol

DVDA: 500Hz, 250Hz
DVDA is the "shorter range, maximum consistency" protocol - it sends each packet twice

LORA: 500Hz, 250Hz, 150Hz, 50Hz
LORA is the "long range" protocol

#

Here's something fun
ELRS 2.4GHz
500Hz LORA
10mW power
10.2 km range 😄

Returned to this nice spot and tried 500Hz for the first time.
