Rivers flow from high elevation to low elevation. So the closer to lakes/ponds/mountains a place is the higher the elevation would be, the further down the lower.

So you can use biomes to illustrate the elevation differences

The exception might be if their reproduction is incompatible but I haven't tested that yet, lol

Also phenotypes won't really mix, because the way subspecies crossbreeding works is the children of that birth cycle will belong to the subspecies of one parent or the other
