As the explosion progresses, the inner side should disappear smoothly and some smoke waves should appear there going outwards

the explosion also becomes redder as time goes on

and after the fire particles are mostly gone, get that smoke some movement up the y axis

The waves make your explosion look bubble-like due to their shape

For large explosions, go with spikes in the first frames.
