Consider the computing resources required to support a single instance of the game you plan to host. Now multiply that by however many different instances you want on your server, and how many players you want per instance. While that may not be a 100% accurate means of determining your game’s resource load, it should give you an idea of how heavy an online game can get.

And note that your server needs to offer pretty near flawless performance. If it starts to lag or chug under heavy load, players are going to quit and go elsewhere. In short, you should probably spring for a dedicated server that offers a bit more than you’ll need in terms of power – or at the very least, look into cloud bursting.

@dusty cairn Yea Epic Games has been around for years bud. They had the money and resources to put towards fixing shit fast. BSG is an indie company from Russia with not that many employees and I'm pretty sure this is their first game. Not to mention it is multiple times more complex than fortnite. The servers have to do all of the mathematical computations for bullet travel time, hit detection, deciding what damage is dealt based on armor and limb multipliers, handling AI decisions and pathing, traders and their inventories, the flea market transactions, and the list goes on. Its a lot of shit. Your actual copy of the game basically gets you access to the servers and handles the graphics, textures, weapon models, pictures, and all that. Client side vs server side is a huge difference.

The problem with renting is you have no ability to scale, cost more if scaling is needed, hardware upgrades when clients complain about shitty load/network response times

With serves like azure or aws, scaling is left to the services you pay for

Kinda? They have diag scripts they run to narrow it down, then usually swap the server with a known good and repair the faulty one and dispatch it out somewhere else

The last wipe was extra long like at least 9 months. During that time there were less than 10 servers I think lol. US East, West, Russia, Europe, China, I think maybe a couple others. No server load problems like this. Really shows how much the player base has grown.

This huge influx of players was honestly unexpected. And now they have to take the time to upgrade the servers and add new ones, WHICH THEY ARE WORKING ON. Have some damn patience people, like holy hell. You have a steam library im sure with like 200 games you could play in the meantime, or a mobile game to play while you wait.
