I've even been right next to one and snuck up behind him and aimed for the top of the head but when the raid was over it said Thorax. Doh! Any advice?

@shut mason take armor with you that you're expecting to make use of or will be relevant to your situation. Lvl 2 armor wont do much versus players since everyone will carry something worthwhile that at least pens class 4 armor (or take high flesh damage rounds and focus on shooting your limbs), but it'll do a decent job to protect you a bit vs scavs.
If you're willing to invest in it, ragman sells the 6B3TM armored rig which is pretty great value for what it does.
Personally - but thats just me - i dont even bother with class 3 armor.

I bought eft a couple days ago and i can't figure out how to hit my shots. Should i stand still? Can i strafe? I understand there's recoil, but i feel like i have pretty good control. I'm from rainbow so i'm pretty used to every shot being on point

Most of the time, when scav isn't up, I just roam in offline mode on different maps, checking extracts, Learning drops from certain rooms, ertc.
Got 1.1m now, so I can probably do some spicy runs with a SKS n' shit
