A) Hope they move their mouse/keyboard key and make a noise in the bush to give them away---you have to hear it
B) You have to train your eyes (impossible when some camo dude is laying in a bush)

alright, i just slammed in some Gunsmith Mechanic quests, one of the quest rewards is a modded m870 shotgun. Normally speaking i'd probably just dissassemble it and sell the parts, but i kinda feel like giving it a go actually. Already swapped the 4-round mag with a 10-round mag.

I know that shotgun spray patterns are kinda fucked (with the exception of the Saiga apparently) and slugs are the only way to go. But i never play with shotguns, so i dnt really know what i should get. What kind of shotty ammo is something you guys would suggest using? Or should i just get rid of the thing and sell the parts?

If you've not got anything to hold keys in like a docs case etc I'd not even waste time taking keys INTO shoreline. If you're ratting with a pistol you're not going near the health center anyway. The goal is just to get in, get any old shit to sell and get out safely with your xp

The XP is more valuable than the money so you can get to level 10 and buy ammo that works

On shoreline for me, if I spawned on the west my first decision is whether or not to sprint to the cottage with the 2 safes in it. You dont need a key and you can get enough stuff out in your alpha container to counter your losses for the run straight away, everything after that is cream in terms of money - so you can concentrate on getting out with your XP intact.

I'd take a pistol and as good a backpack as you can

If you spawn east - its about getting to the treeline and hunkering down for a minute or two, playing very slowly and remembering that your goal is simply to not be seen for the first 10 mins, since everyone in the game can outrange you

Yeah thats fine, if you're THAT broke - just do hatchling runs and sprint for the safes, every time

and do run-throughs on your scav runs in factory if you can manage it so you can get straight to an extract and use your scav gear on a character that can get you XP

If not factory, because it IS carnage, do scav runs on customs and concentrate on just getting to your extract. If you hear gunfire, avoid it. If you hear footsteps or closer shots get on your belly, etc

@dark yew Edit speaks wisdom. If you're struggling with gear you should be doing scav runs on cooldown with the only objective being to survive.
Once you extract with a few kits and get some confidence on whatever map you're running, you can start looting along the way as well.

Hell, I'm stacked with gear and have a few million roubles and I still alternate PMC and Scav raids. (I scav run on Reserve as I'm trying to learn the map and if you play slow its pretty easy to extract consistently as a Scav)

@dark yew All good man. Things I wish had been said to me when I started:

The goal is to get to level 10. That's it. Nothing else matters at the start. So long as you're making progress, however slowly, to level 10 - you're winning. I say this because frankly : when you're relatively new to the game - you're not going to outplay people consistently enough that you can overcome the handicap of not having access to ammo that does actual damage. You need the fleamarket.

To that end -

Play shoreline as cheap as you can. If you're TOTALLY broke, don't take anything. Once you're only "almost totally broke" start taking a pistol and a backpack if you can afford it. Keep things like the "Lower Half Mask" items because you can trade 3 of them for a PACA armor and either wear it if you're doing well enough or sell it if you're still getting shot out of nowhere everytime you die.

If you spawn west-north near the swamps, loot the weapons crates in the church, next to the broken truck and the actual swamp house, then start moving towards the cottage where the 2 safes are. Approach carefully, there's no rush if you've spent time looting swamps. If you're racing to the cottage, you're either doing it from the instant you spawn in, or you've lost the race.

Once you've been to cottage and either killed the scavs and looted, or found it already looted (including the shed in the locked cottage yard) and everyone dead - go into the small construction area next to it, turn immediately left from the entrance and in the corner, past the planks, in the thick lump of bushes is a buried barrel cache you can get.

From there you can either head north to the weapons crates, with a view to killing the scav there and then heading east to see if the rock passage extract is open, or you can head east instead and try your luck at the power station. If there are scavs there - kill them and run straight through unless you're confident you know where most of the players are. The noise will bring players and you're in one of the worst chokepoints in the map to get caught in, because the only cover afforded to you keeps you IN the choke.

If you spawned on the eastern side - this is the less advantageous spawn for a rat run. Just get to the tree line if you spawned south and then hunker down in a dip, crouch and lowest speed and stay there for 2-4 mins so the guys rushing to weather station can get past you. THEN work your way back east towards the road to make sure that if anyone else has waited : you're not going to fold into their sightline and give them a free kill.

Practise the map in offline mode without PVE so you can sprint to the hidden cache locations so you're not wandering around the same spot for 5 minutes staring at your feet in a live game

If you're dying out of nowhere still, the following might help-

Assume when you spawn that there are players nearby at the closest spawn to you and that they KNOW you're there. There are limited spawns, and players will often move to intercept and out-position their nearest enemy - especially if they DON'T know whether you spawned there or not. They don't want the same thing to happen to them. Play accordingly : don't be caught sprinting towards them or towards the first POI with decent loot unless you're ratting and "playing a sprint for an alphabox full of loot from a safe" type game. If you're trying to stay alive to get your xp, take it very slow. Experienced players will know roughly where you are if you're moving towards them or towards loot from the next spawn over to them. They'll be looking for you.

If you've got a 2nd monitor - having a map showing up to date playerspawns will help you with that.

Certain maps are REALLY choke heavy. Customs is a fucking nightmare for newbies because you're not aware of how far people will see you from, the cover they're capable of seeing you THROUGH because they know where to look etc etc etc, and the whole map is essentially a thoroughfare. It's VERY hard to go undetected on Customs when compared to something like Shoreline. All the best loot on Shoreline is at the health centre. Guys risking serious gear and hundreds of thousands in ammo won't spend that ammo for anything less than the best gear. So after the first 10 minutes of the game, they're almost guaranteed to be duking it out at the health centre.

@languid kindle Sprinting in general is something you want to do ONLY when you have to. When you're new, that means :

If you're running AWAY from someone and to move slower is to be shot dead - it's worth the risk of running into someone in a bush since, you're dead anyway if 3 fully kitted guys on their 23423498237423th wipe are moving in on you and shooting.

If there's NO cover between you and where you're going next - crouch, min.speed and stay PERFECTLY still somewhere in deep cover for a minute or so (time it using the in-game clock) - if you don't hear someone rustling around because they were watching you and lining you up but now they're not sure where you are, then you're as close to being able to make that sprint as you can be. If someone is hiding within audio range and they're SO quiet that you don't know they're there : there's not much you can do. When sprinting across open ground you're taking your life into your hands, move as erratically as you can without extending your time out of cover to avoid being lined up from miles away.

If you're thinking of areas between spots where there is loot as 'dead space' that you have to navigate through as quickly as you can, you're misunderstanding the real state of play. Those are killing grounds.

Something important to know is : once you turn off your UI sounds - EVERY sound you hear in your game, all your gear rattling and rustling, every bush sound can be heard by your enemies. The difference is it will 99.9% be louder and EASIER to hear for them because they'll be wearing Comtac or Sordin headphones that cancel out ambient noise whilst INCREASING the volume of playermade noises.

@dark yew I reckon till you build up a little bit of cash, enough that you're not worrying about replacing pistol&backpack and paying your healing bill you should just sell MOST things. Don't vendor things like keys, meds, good ammo. Higher value items like motors etc are useful if you CAN keep them - but space is at a premium until you get access to the fleamarket and containers etc

A lot of the 'junk' items that you'll sell for 500 now will sell for 6-12k on the fleamarket at level 10. So the goal really is keeping yourself with enough gear to get to level 10. XP is the goal, not money or gear really

This is my first wipe so I have no experience of anything else, but not having the fleamarket at lower levels just hamstrings the guys who need the help most. I think it's stupid.

There are other things like weapon mods etc that would sell for 60-100k on the fleamarket, but I'm still learning which are valuable and which are shit, so tbh I'd not worry about it for now. Nothing is irreplaceable unless you loot items that are worth MILLIONS like Ledx, or other items that are so good that you couldn't mistake them for trash (Weapons cases etc).

Those are the items you need for quests ^. Tbh, I'd not worry too much about storing them because your stash will be full all the time until you unlock or find containers.

But prioritise keeping them if you can
