I believe it designates some items that are more rare or are special task items. I never pay any attention to it.

The caches are primarily on the outskirts so you can usually hit quite a few of them without going near any players, you can also target them on scav runs

@rain osprey Gun powder is mostly use to craft stuff, you'll need 4 blues for a Q later. Matches are barter trades only really. Hoses, wires, screws, bolts, toolsets, salt, relays, marlboros, winstons, lightbulbs, sparkplugs are all for either quests or hideout upgrades

@surreal karma If you're level 5 check to see if you can sell it for much more on the flea market. But some items like guns seem to insta sell on the flea market for about the same as you would sell to a vendor so that will save you loads of time. I keep quest/hideout items, sell all guns basically because I'm so noobie, keep my beginning pistols and ammo, scav vets, bags.
When you get better and more experienced you can start using the money to buy budget but effective cheap kits
I'm not insanely rich or anything but I'm fine and slowly progessing up from 300k now to 1.7m
my scav bp is filled with bags and scav vessts
