Anyone have a recommendation for a middle-tier assault rifle and mod setup with the basics (optical sight) that I won’t cry if I lose? Built for close to mid (but not sniping) distance?
I’m pretty new to the game and I’ve only used the scav guns and an M4 I was lucky enough to pick up off a guy I killed before being headshot by someone else.
I don’t have the money to buy every assault rifle and mod to try them all out so if anyone has a “go to” weapon setup I’d love to hear it. And yes I’ve looked at the wiki and watched about 20 hours of YouTube content 😂

Adar is garbage gun. Has poor accuracy. Begins at .065 and has 80 durability which effectively doubles spread because bsg links durability and accuracy

Veprkm, sks (do not use op sks), vepr hunter, sv98, m700. Basic fal is 50k but like 90k with a couple mods, svds is 55k on market and like 30k extra with decent grip and pso
545 and 556 are just flat out unusable/unreliable without either guranteed head/face taps or 545 BS/ 556 m995
M80 is one of the best overall rounds in the game with the platforms you can use it with. 7n1 is the best 54r round that's same as m80 effectively.
Why you ask? Because they near reliably one tap chests up to lvl 4 armor

Ive rarely been in a position that im shooting past 100 meters, even on maps like woods and shoreline. I perfer sks because its cheap, has good iron sights, and you dont need extra mags. I dont like the vepr because of its high recoil/kick that can make it hard to shoot fast and acurately while adsing

Also remember you can rebind alot and use the same key for more than 1 function based on press type. So for example Z is prone for me (with Z on my mouse) and Double tap Z is change fire selector.
Or if you die you can run your scav. If it's a long enough scav raid you will be mostly healed by the time you are done.

Basic stuff should be sold to traders. If it's a high end item then flea. Should check price on flea (lowest price sold for not stupid high) and see if trader will give same amount. Factor in Tax when selling to flea and the fact that it may not sell immediately.

I'd suggest playing as Scav online to gain some loot. And play offline matches as pmc to learn maps and get familiar with shooting mechanics / AI loot areas

And as a beginner I'd suggest cheap ammo, you won't stand much chance vs geared players. And AI is using lvl 4 armor at most and it's rare. So anything that penetrates lvl 3 armor is good enough

First thing to do as a new player, go in your stash and delete everything, no gear and no money, now you are over gear fear, enjoy 😄

This game is pretty damn RNG. You can't be prepared for every encounter. Even with this PS ammo or better there will be someone with customised m4 which shoots 1.5 times faster than your ak. And has no recoil so 20/30 bullets will hit ya. Instead of yours 10/30 or sumthing, AKM has HUGE recoil.
And even this PRO with m4 will die to a guy with a mosin or vepr hunter for 30k. With 2 bullets in the thorax. Or 1 in the head with visor or without.

To give ya some tips about bosses / raiders. They are scared of grenades, so you can throw nade and make up run to the cover. It's cool strategy to detect if the AI is there, cuz they 100% shout at loud and run. Which makes them easier to kill.
2nd most common strategy is camping and baiting AI around the corners. They don't have godly reactions anymore, and you hear em comming so you have "ambush" advantage over em. So it's failry easy to headshoot them from 2-5 meters before they even spot ya.
There might be problem with killa tho. Cuz he has helmet lvl 6. And your PS ammo will have to destroy it first before it penetrates.
Some ppl prefere leg meta strategy to kill him.
Pros : you don't destroy precious helmet/visor/armor, that you can loot use/sell for ~300k.
Cons : fairly easy to forget that you are leg metting, while being scared to death :D.
