It's preference, lots of new players hold down the key which makes it not work, so just know what it is

It's technically used for the last task in the game, you get at 55 after all other tasks. But I wouldn't worry about that. You can always check using https://tarkov-market.com/ and the info it provides for quest/hideout/barter/crafting requirements and for flea prices. Then you can decide what things you'll need soon enough, and which items sell for enough, to hold onto.
