Tis a pork chop but ribeye sounds delish

I'm going to go for a reverse sear on it - smoke it at 200 until i get close to medium rare, then i'll crank up the temp to up max for a sear

#

training for a half marathon, how do i push these limits, i just feel so defeated

#

dm me if not really appropriate etc tho haha

remote sail
#

why did you have to stop? Muscle fatigue, or breathing?

lilac gust
#

feet pain and legs, breath/cardio was fine

#

it was mental i'm sure but feet did hurt

remote sail
#

okay. that's something that does take time to build, but there are also technique issues that make things harder/easier

#

one really common thing with "new" runners is way too much vertical motion (really bad on your feet and knees especially), and too much arm motion. For the later, just keep your hands open and relaxed, and kinda near your hips. Don't swing them, just let them kinda float there. For the former, it's hard to provide real advice without watching you run. If you feel like you are landing hard on your heels or your feet, shorten your stride a bit. Another sign of that is that your knees might hurt. Shorter stride does mean faster run tempo, which takes a while to get used to, and might feel like more work at first (higher heart rate, faster breathing). But long term it's better for your body

#

those "barefoot" vibram five finger shoes kinda force you into a natural gait rather than an elongated stride, which most running shoes encourage, but they are hard to get used to

#

which part of your legs hurt the most?

lilac gust
#

wow cool info, interesting, i just got some new shoes for longer distances but my main pain is feet + calves recently

remote sail
#

what kind of shoes?

lilac gust
#

my other shoes are a lot more similar to barefoot tbh, and i've used them for over 400k and when i run longer distance (over 7) I too often end up sore

#

hmm well right now for "long runs" (slow and over 5k) i'm using new brookers glycerin, and for my short / faster runs i'm using my old new balance something rather

remote sail
#

so that does like a "typical" running shoe with tons of heel padding

lilac gust
#

the new ones are

remote sail
#

shoes like that encourage you to take longer strides, which means you strike more with the back of your heel than the bottoms of your feet, so that causes knee problems/pain

#

and this is a problem for practically ALL running shoes

lilac gust
#

these shoes a) make half my foot numb and b) steal my energy BUT

#

i dont get any similar pains to my older shoes

#

like my old shoes i hit certain distances and my legs want to fall apart

#

these are so comfy

remote sail
#

do you by any chance have a good running specific shoe store, or a triathlon store near you?

tawdry dove
#

Also how much stretching are you doing?

#

Or dynamic warm-ups would be the proper term

lilac gust
#

honestly i hope my new shoes are a problem and a few more tries will be used to it and 'll be fine

#

like I tell myself distacne is irrelevant right, just slow down and I can do antything, but eventually my brain just mentally breaks me and i have to walk a bit or whatever

remote sail
#

So, part of me wants to say "just slowly build up your endurance", which can take months or years depending on where you're at now. Part of me wants to say "go find a running coach who can analyze your stride".

#

also- don't be afraid to take walk breaks, that's perfectly acceptable

lilac gust
#

mmmmm both smart, good advice

#

the mere though of walking is faling to me on a 'long run' - maybe thats the wrong mentality to have

remote sail
#

it took me a long time to be able to do full marathons without a walk break, and probably almost every single ultramarathon I've done I've had to do breaks

lilac gust
#

ultras are something else

remote sail
#

yeah

#

my longest is about a 100k/60mi. It hurt.

lilac gust
#

yeah no doubt, i have a mate who's done a few of those and has a definite love hate relationship with it

remote sail
lilac gust
#

i'll take a look, thanks for chatting to me about it

remote sail
#

yeah, no prob

#

one thing I would caution you on: it's easy to push past pain into injury. I've done that countless countless times

lilac gust
#

helps a lot, i dont know many who do it and I really want to finih this half marathon in sep

remote sail
#

so I would definitely try to get a real running coach to video your stride. And if you can't, then maybe take a video of your running (from back, front, and side), and send it to someone to review. I can look at it, but I'm not like certified or anything, it'd just be my own opinions based on my experience

lilac gust
#

ok, that is cool and good advice, I may do that actually, I just feel like such a noob even though i've run so much (it feels like)

remote sail
#

how long have you been running/training for this?

lilac gust
#

specifically for this, 2 months so far I guess

#

its 16 week program and i'm at 6 weeks to go

remote sail
#

link me the program?

#

another thought: what surface(s) do you run on? Concrete sidewalk? Asphalt? Grass? uneven/off-road trails?

lilac gust
#

asphalt 100%, I did a compltely different run the other day and it was like 400 stairs I didn't know about which ruined my calves for a week

remote sail
#

oh god, yeah

lilac gust
#

hahah

remote sail
#

you think that's bad, do a 'tour de stad'. Go to a big stadium and run up and down every single stair

#

and then good luck walking for about a week

lilac gust
#

this was bad enough, I ran when I got down but the next day I was broken and it hurt my training sched a little

#

not much, but a bit

remote sail
#

something else that may seem strange: walking is great recovery/workout/training

#

you could do like a 10-20mi or whatever walk/hike, and that's actually great training. It does force your feet/tendons/blood vessels/etc to adapt

lilac gust
#

mmmm sounds good too

#

ok, thanks, good to talk to someone, i'll keep pushing and re-do this weeks trainng, appreciate the info @remote sail

hoary nymphBOT
#

Gave +1 Rep to @remote sail

remote sail
#

yeah, no problem

#

I would definitely try to go see a running coach and have them check your stride. Or two, since every coach will have several ideas/opinions

#

listen to your body, though- if it's hurting, then something is wrong. Part of endurance running will always hurt, but there's a difference between just fatigue/lactic acid pain, and doing damage to your body

#

I've found that line the hard way usually, and it took me years to figure out where my body's limits are, and how to push them without injury

#

also, I wouldn't worry too much about pace. I'm skimming this running plan, and it's talking a lot about pace. Just do what is comfortable, don't set a target pace or time, not until you become much more experienced and know your body a lot better

#

a separate conversation we can have is around nutrition and how to fuel your body, before and during the race. 🙂

lilac gust
#

true, thank you for the advice and kind words,i';d never taken anything during an run and i have ruled out a few things that make me really bad during a run (rice) so generally dont eat, pace doesn't bother me so much thought I listen to the guided runs they seem reasonable I guess its only the long run i struggle with

remote sail
#

Yeah, use that as a guide if you want (there are lots of other plans out there too you can compare with), but ultimately, let your breathing and your body determine your pace. Your goal is completion without injury, not to win. So if you need to walk or slow down or whatever, that's fine

lilac gust
#

I feel like on a long run, as soon as I walk i've failed and wasted all my time

#

probably not a useful mentality

remote sail
#

definitely not a useful mentality 🙂

#

the whole walk/run method works great for some, works horrible for others

#

for me personally, it would actually make it harder to start back up, so I would rather just slow down really far, to the point where I'm at a walking pace, then to actually start walking. It really depends on the distance and your body though

#

I know people who do the walk/run method and love it

keen totem
#

(Former military here: our running exercise included a lot of walking too; it really has its purpose)

remote sail
#

something I started doing when I got into ultras was walking for the refueling/eating parts sometimes. But I had to break ultras into walk phases, I just couldn't do 40+ miles without it

lilac gust
#

ultras are kind of another kinda crazy tho

#

dont ppl take tents and stuff

remote sail
#

depends on the race

lilac gust
#

not exactly the same as a casual 4hr jog lol

remote sail
#

you might also be thinking of adventure racing, which is also fun/miserable

keen totem
remote sail
#

lol, I could share some "fun" land nav stories

#

ahhhh the good ol' days

keen totem
#

😄

remote sail
#

but bottom line, don't feel like a failure. Set yourself low/medium/high goals. Maybe something like: 1) show up and try 2) complete it without injury 3) complete it under X pace. If you show up and give it your best, you already win. If you have to quit or get hurt or whatever, that's okay- learn from it and do better next time. I once had to quit a half-ironman at like 50 miles into it. It sucked.

lilac gust
#

alrighty, does make a bit of sense, I guess I feel like if i'm completing all the workouts on the list why is it so damn hard to do the long rnu sometimes, but its likely a combination of factors some i can control and some I cant

#

breaking through new barriers is tough running for me, like i put up my own mental walls

remote sail
#

I'd really want to look at your running form (video analysis is soooo useful), and your nutrition strategies

#

or not me personally, but you should have someone knowledgeable do it/help you w/ that

lilac gust
#

I don't take any footage or me running unfortunately

remote sail
remote sail
# lilac gust I don't take any footage or me running unfortunately

See if you can find a running coach/running store/triathlon store in your area that can do video analysis. If not, get a friend to film you on a treadmill and I can look at the vids and tell you what I think. Before you do, let me know, and I can show you what I'm looking for

lilac gust
#

sounds awesome, thank you, I have considered joining a club here but feel so amateur i'm not sure how it would be received

remote sail
#

oh don't be scared- most people would probably be very friendly and inviting

#

there are a few kinds of endurance athletes: the pros/elites, the "wannabe elites" who are really dang good and maybe snobby, the enthusiasts, and the casuals

#

most people are inviting and friendly to new folks, at least in my experience. The only rude/snobby ones I have run into are the ones who are focused on times/winning/placing/money/etc., and who may be struggling to achieve that

#

in fact- that ironman I had to drop out, I got back to the waiting area at the same time some of the leaders were finishing the race, they were all super friendly and gave me great advice, even though I'd just dropped out of the race

lilac gust
#

ahhh, haha, understandable, I may look more into it, I always figured i'd get what i need from audio guidance and didn't see value in a club but I have run my best times at actual 'runs' and not solo so maybe there is something to working out with others too

#

oh wow, thats awesome

remote sail
#

there definitely can be, yeah. More motivation, more competition, having a pacer, someone to talk to and take your mind off the pain, whatever works for you

#

we all have different needs/motivations, and that can also change a lot during a race

#

just do what's fun for you :).
One thing I'll caution you about with run clubs, though: everyone will give you a lot of advice, and some of it will be conflicting. Some will be bad or even dangerous. So you have to do your homework, and use common sense, and a lot of it is trial and error. Especially nutrition, that's a very personal thing. What works for me might not work for you. Over time, you'll learn your body better and be able to have a better sense of what is "good" advice and what is not, for you

lilac gust
#

yeah I noticed a lot of pro and during run nutrition seems to vary

#

what do you feel for you, is a run you need to take any nutrition on

remote sail
#

that book I linked above talks a lot about it. It was always something I struggled to perfect

#

it depends on distance, temps, and humidity

lilac gust
#

like i've never had any problems or though about it, even running on an empty stomach of a morning up to 10k but i've heard bad things about running further or over 12k etc what even happens, how do you know?

remote sail
#

I got to where I could do half marathons with no water or nutrition. I'd just go out with some chewing gum to keep my mouth moist. But then later on, I started taking gatorade and salt tablets with me, especially for longer runs or in hotter weather

lilac gust
#

i got some gels but taking them feels like more energy than they give me almost

#

interesting

remote sail
#

what most people seem to do/recommend is a light breakfast- maybe some oatmeal or an egg, some gels, someething like that. You want to eat at least an hour or more before the race, to fully digest it

#

during the race, anything from gatorade to gels to water to salt tablets, to custom mixes

lilac gust
#

lol

remote sail
#

fixed the link 🙂

lilac gust
#

that's quite a few extras to run with though

remote sail
#

yep, like I said, it's a very personal decision

#

you might not need it. And during a race, there will be aid stations every few miles with water/gatorade/heed/oranges/gels/protein bars/chicken soup/etc

#

but double check that- each race is different

lilac gust
#

yeah I'll take note, I'd ideally only like to refuel of any sort once on a half marathon and twice on a marathon but i'll try a half first and it's in september so

#

still more time to prepare, thank you for all the insight

remote sail
#

no problem :). SOmething that also helps me is chewing gum. I breathe through my mouth when I run, so it gets dry. But gum helps with that

lilac gust
#

I try breathe through my nose inwards and mouth outwards when running but it does take some concious effort occasionally to maintain it

remote sail
#

whatever works for you :). I couldn't get enough air that way

lilac gust
#

might try gum soon and see if it helps

#

yeah i imagine you were going a fair bit faster than me lol

remote sail
#

eh, I dunno. I wasn't a speedy person

#

my best marathon was just under 3:30, which was like an 8 min pace

#

and that was definitely my peak- I was running 100-150 mi/wk at the time and in pretty great shape

lilac gust
#

nutty, one of my friends runs around 4:40 per km and thins he is slow too

remote sail
#

I think my best half-iron was like sub 7hours, don't recall exactly

lilac gust
#

i'm like 6:00 - 6:15 kmph

remote sail
#

maybe 6:30ish

#

lemme convert kmph to mph

lilac gust
#

and longer distance = slower

#

well, 4:40 is a 3:20 marathon or so I think

remote sail
#

yeah, that's fast

lilac gust
#

thats insane

I have a good friend who qualified for and ran Boston, which is a really big deal

#

he was a sub 3 hour full marathon, don't recall exactly.

lilac gust
#

wow

#

its so alien how fast that is, like, they are virtually my springing an entire marathon

remote sail
#

yeah. And that again comes back to- everyone is different. So listen to advice, but use what works for you, discard what doesn't. A lot of it becomes trial and error, and that just takes time. The trick/the key is doing that without injury, while you build up that experience.

lilac gust
#

yeah I can definitely agree with that message, injury seems to be the number one thing that slows down progress over tiem

remote sail
#

absolutely

#

and speaking from experience, I've broken my body in just about every way there is doing all kinds of dumb things. Don't be like me 🙂

#

part of endurance sports is pushing past the point where your body wants to quit, but you can take that too far and push past injury. I did that a LOT, and I pay for that as I get older.

lilac gust
#

true, I do want to have a slow and steady build up not a hurt myself going to hard

remote sail
#

yeah. SO listen to your body, don't focus on pace, don't worry about taking walk breaks

#

set a goal just to show up and learn from it. Finish if you can, at any pace. Anything beyond that is extra

#

there WILL be other races, so if this one turns out poorly, that's okay. Don't get upset about it.

#

it's an endurance sport, you gotta think long term/big picture :).

lilac gust
#

yep! OK i might beat myself up less over walking a bit on the long runs

#

not that i've had to do it much the other day was a real downer

remote sail
#

we all have bad days, don't beat yourself up

#

the way I look at it is this: most of the world is sitting on the couch or in front of a computer doing nothing. If you're just out there showing up, you're already doing great. So just enjoy the moment

#

honestly, positive mental attitude is key. Use whatever motivates you, but for most people, keeping upbeat about it/staying happy does help

#

"We rejoice in our sufferings because we know that suffering produces perseverance, perseverance produces character, character produces hope. And hope does not disappoint us." ROMANS 5:3-4 - An adventure racers prayer.

Mmh. We should have it above 20, mostly near 30 for the next couple of weeks.

tawdry dove
#

Yeah tomorrow is 35° in the wrong temperature measurement

rapid summit
#

That's inhuman kekw

#

I'm talking about your country's preferred temperature scale

tawdry dove
#

I like it for certain measurements. Metric isn't granular enough when it comes to temperature

#

Just depends on the situation for which system I use

rapid summit
#

For that, we invented a system called "decimals" kekw

#

But yeah, I see the point there.

tawdry dove
#

Nah I don't want to be using decimals when I'm trying to figure out the weather or how fast I'm going in a car

#

Cooking and baking I'll use metric though

rapid summit
#

Then use more granularity by using km/h for car speed 🙂

tawdry dove
#

The US is to big for KM kekw

#

Though we do use acres to measure land area

#

I don't like how 100km/h is only 60mph

rapid summit
# tawdry dove Though we do use acres to measure land area

It is traditionally defined as the area of one chain by one furlong (66 by 660 feet), which is exactly equal to 10 square chains, 1⁄640 of a square mile, or 43,560 square feet, and approximately 4,047 m2, or about 40% of a hectare.

#

isn't that practical kekw

tawdry dove
#

Oh wtf I thought acres were metric

rapid summit
#

Apparently "Are" is the 10m by 10m area, acre is that monstrosity

tawdry dove
#

I thought it was the base unit for area but I guess you would just say ares?

#

This is why metric is confusing and dumb and freedom units are better kekw

rapid summit
#

And note how it makes USA look smaller, China is 5000 kilometers from west to east, whereas USA is only 3500 miles 🙂

spark sun
#

the only benefit to using Imperial measurements are learning to convert between bases pretty early on - there is a reason that all physical science research areas standardized to metric decades ago

rapid summit
#

The only benefit to using non-metric is beer. By getting a pint you get more 🍺

spark sun
#

How would you know that if you couldn't convert between pints and litres though 😄

rapid summit
#

It's not about "couldn't", it's about "wouldn't" 🙂

tawdry dove
#

Pints kekw I use quarts and gallons when drinking beer

rapid summit
#

Oh, and I'm talking about UK pints, not the small US ones!

tawdry dove
#

Yeah i think ive only ordered a pint a couple of times

#

The bar near school had personal pitchers

I think the UK has different views about cats than in the US

my cat gets supervised outdoor time, but cats are often killed by cars (or worse.. poison) in the US

also cats can have a negative impact on the bird population as well although I'd be all for them taking down the rodent population but that is what snakes are for

pallid citrus
#

Also don't need cats to piss and crap in sandboxes at playgrounds...also don't want anyones pet in my yard nor generally wandering around...cars can hit them by accident, crazy people try to poison dogs....so it's better to keep all pets under supervision...meaning keep it leashed if there's not a space with fences

Ingredients:

  1. Macaroni pasta
#
  1. 3 garlic cloves(finely chopped)
  2. 1 teaspoon of pepper powder
  3. 1 teaspoon of chili powder (preferably Everest chili powder, you can find it in an Indian store anywhere, if you don't just use any chilli powder)
  4. 2 teaspoons of sugar
  5. 4-5 teaspoons of tomato ketchup or if you prefer it to be healthy add fresh tomato puree
  6. 100ml of milk
  7. Cheese/Mayonnaise or both (for the creamy texture(you can use any cheese you like))
  8. 1 teaspoon of salt
  9. 1 teaspoon of butter/clarified butter/desi ghee(again, you can find desi ghee in any Indian store, if you don't find it just use butter or clarified butter)
  10. Finely chopped onions(I forgot to add onions in my recipe)
    optional items:
Corn, bell pepper, meat, mushrooms or anything you want(this is a completely vegetarian recipe)
#

@celest cairn

#

Let me send the procedure also

#

Procedure:

  1. Boil the Macaroni and add salt as required according to the quantity of water, to make the pasta not taste pale and wheatish, say 2 teaspoons of salt, because we need them big and not small, adjust the quantity according to for whom you are making
  2. Add butter/clarified butter/desi ghee to the boiling macaroni to avoid them getting stuck together
  3. Drain the water after the macaroni is 90% soft you can take a spoon and check how soft it is, and run the boiled macaroni under cold water to avoid them sticking together after they are cooked.
  4. Take a pan and heat it, when it is hot enough add 2 spoons of Butter/Clarified butter/Desi Ghee
  5. Add the finely chopped garlic cloves and cook them until they are golden brown
  6. Now add the finely chopped onions and cook them until they are golden brown
  7. Once they turn golden brown add the tomato ketchup or tomato puree depends on what you are using and add 1 teaspoon of salt
  8. once it is cooked(for puree you will know it is cooked when the butter is on top of the puree, you can see the patches of melted butter when you see it)(and if you are using ketchup, you don't have to wait for it to cook)
  9. Now add your chili powder, pepper powder and sugar according to your taste
  10. Now add the boiled macaroni to the pan
  11. Add cheese/mayonnaise or both to the pan and add the milk, and keep stirring for 2-3 minutes or until it is creamy, or not too creamy, it will be a little loose in the first, but after cooling it down it will become creamy.

Then add this to a bowl/plate/whatever and enjoy blobheart
