create simple virtualbox machine and then run it and observe with wireshark what is happening wiith packages and what kind of packages are being sent while trying to connect to it. I am doing this now and and its easier to understand some stuff

I have Kali Linux running on VMWare Fusion on my M1 MacBook Pro, and I have Metasploitable 2 running on VMWare Workstation on my (Windows 11) Lenovo Thinkpad, so separate laptops. I can't seem to get Kali to communicate with Metasploitable due to ICMP filtering. I tracked down the ip that is doing the filtering via whois and saw that it's actually my ISP's ip address. Anyone have any advice on how I can get them to communicate? Idk if it helps, but I'm on a combo Eero router/modem. I found that ip address though, and it doesn't seem to be doing the filtering

so, you are testing it over the internet? 🤔

i would suggest you to test it over the intranet. and possibly just isolate your environment. that should be your first and foremost action whatever you do.

Yes, kind of. I was hoping to test it via a private network since they're both connected to the same wifi, but I'm wondering if something is going wrong that maybe the ISP is blocking? I don't know why I wouldn't be able to test on my own wifi network though

well depending on what network setting you have in vmware it could be seen as its own network and therefor not sharing or similar

shadow is the wrong person to ask how to do this as they have no clue

Ah, maybe I'm approaching it incorrectly then. To clarify, I'm not using public facing ip addresses for this testing

but know that vm:s generally segrate the network they use

vms or containers in general have the NIC configuration which you have to figure out which works for you.

Generally when testing with metasploitable you would want to set up a host only network on the same machine.

Got it, yeah actually that's what I ended up doing (setting up Kali and Metasploitable both on my Windows 11 laptop and it works fine). I was just hoping to do them separately because my M1 has 32GB RAM and is wicked fast, while my Thinkpad has 16GB is a bit slower

Also, I can't get Metasploitable to work on the M1 ARM architecture
