I checked what $TERM outputted outside tmux and it was 'xterm-256color' so I changed the line @formal sparrow gave with
set -g default-terminal "xterm-256color"
to match the colored terminal. Now its fixed. It only worked after killing all alive sessions of tmux. Thanks again for leading me in the right way!
