Hi all! I've been trying to complete the defence path and gotten stuck in network services. The problems started with nmap scans that never returned any results. I mean, ever. At first I thought it was just a problem with nmap or just a bad connection with the THM servers. But it kept happening. I mean every single attempt to use nmap as part of a task - but with an important exception (and perhaps a clue): nmap worked fine if run without any options added. I have of course consulted write ups but skipping forward I find all kinds of connection or access issues occur. I naturally check and recheck the commands and make sure I didn't miss any steps, but they still occur. Am I on the right track thinking there is an issue with the attack box itself?

I don't think so. I've used nmap a lot in the past for bootcamp projects and on THM itself. This problem has just started happening the last few times I've tried to run it on the THM attack box. Nmap is running fine from my home machine, it's just when I try to run a scan from the attack box. It runs fine if I just do a plain vanilla scan with no options, but if I add even one option I get what as far as I can tell is eternal silence (I let it run once to see if it was just a reaaalllyyyy slow connection but nothing ever came back).

For context if you are interested, it was Network Services 2 Task 3 (Enumerating NFS) that I was doing just now when I thought to ask for help, so I was running it with -A and -p- as suggested. I know -p- means scan all ports and it can take a long time, but I had let it run out a very long time and nothing ever came back.

Hey! Thanks for asking. @lament trout suggestion resolved my nmap issue, but I am still having a lot of access denied type responses where I shouldn't. For example right now I am trying to mount the NFS shares and being told the server has denied access. I though maybe my VPN is messing with things but I checked and it is switched off. I rechecked the commands for typos, rechecked the IP and went through the steps again to make sure I didn't miss anything, but unfortunately I can't find anything that would explain why the server isn't letting the attack box connect. I know it's probably something really simple, but I am a total n00b (hence the nickname!)

Well the attackbox is not the machine you need for that task. If you press the green "Start machine" button, the target machine should appear in split view. The attackbox is a different machine, which is used to attack target machines

So you won't be able to do the tasks with the attackbox itself.

So I clicked "Attackbox" within the "?" options, and 2 terminals opened in the split screen on the right. At the bottom it allowed me to select the exercise window and the "Attackbox". I simply clicked the exercise terminal and powered down the "Attackbox". Seems to be working now

If I have to do it again, I'll choose the other option in the "?" screen and see what happens

@vivid pawn if you dont wanna use vpn, then you cant just copyright the content and bring it in as text then nano or touch or smt to make the file yourself. But vpn sounds like the better choise. After about 30% or smt in complete beginner path i made my own kali machine instead of atk box, and thats a huge difference. No need to uppdate all the time and I keep my files where i want them.

Otherwise, maby it worls to loggin to your thm acc on your thm atk box? Then you have all files in there :)

I am running a kali linux vm and am connected to the VPN.
On several occasions my terminal gets stuck when I am connected via SSH to a target box. i.e. I run linpeas.sh on tharget machine and all I get is the the result as shown in the attached image. What could case something like this?

Hey, I cancelled my premium like 3 months ago because I didn’t have time to get on. Bumping this old post for visibility as I'm having the exact same problem as @thorny dock in the Persistence room. I'm connected to the VPN on my Kali machine, connected to the box via xfreerdp, my metasploit payload is on the box but it's not working and not establishing connection with my handler despite me checking everything 3 times, the box has 99% CPU usage and after a while is prompting me for updates (the only option is to agree). It really does feel like something is getting in the way of getting a meterpreter connection which makes it hard to follow along.

I tried running "sudo ps -a" to see what was up and entered the default password and it gave me nothing but a warning that it was going to report me. Did I do something wrong? I can understand if I'm not allowed to look, just wondering what the reporting is all about

Not sure about the other issue, but the reporting is only because you tried to sudo and entered a wrong password or not being in the sudoers list, so basically nothing to worry about.

May be your VM network settings, a timezone error, or something wrong with your configuration file.

Also make sure you have the right server configuration, I had to change computers during the advent of cyber and accidentally downloaded the wrong server. After a couple attempts to get it working I went back and looked realizing it was on the wrong server. Changed it to the right one and it worked

it's a good idea in general to let machines load for 5 mins before trying to work on them

for windows machines I give 10mins.

The access page is not reliable to verify if you are successfully connected to the thm vpn. So if you are able to open 10.10.10.10 in your machines browser, you can just ignore the access page saying that your are not connected.

this is through THM VPN? are you connected to closest VPN server, did you try resetting your connection? You could also try a subscriber VPN even if it isn't the closest

Did you check ip a s to make sure you only have a tun0 interface and not any extra like tun1, tun2 etc. ? If you only have a tun0 interface and your attacking machine is a VM make sure openvpn is only running inside your VM and not on your host machine as well. If that also is okay then try sudo ip link set dev tun0 mtu 1200 and then do the download again. If that doesn't solve it put it back to 1500 .

I just started a target machine of task 2 and the IP appears flawless. And also I don't see nothing in that room that indicates that you are supposed to SSH into that target machine.

Again, it's very unlikely that you are supposed to SSH into that machine. This machine is a target machine, which most likely is only to be scanned with nmap to answer the questions.

@broken bear - think I may just bite the bullet and learn to upgrade the python2 code to 3. Getting an issue importing requests library and there's no pip2.7 or similar installed.

that's as intended. Py2 has not been supported since jan 2020. As an alternative, look at pyenv as a python environment management tool

i don't really use pyenv for anything except py2 environment

I possbly need to uninstall all python versions and re-install using correct environments. I'm assuming just install py3 as the main and then switch to py2 env and install python2?

Hello. I joined tryhackme about 2-3 weeks ago and have just started the JR Pentest section. Whenever i try and access a virtual machine in order to find a flag, i never get any response and if i do it is usually file does not exist. This has happened on various tasks, to the point of me just giving up as a waste of time. Even when i copy people on youtube, they get the answer, i do not.

Just bought premium and generated a new OpenVPN file to a VIP server.
It does not connect - just gets stuck here (screenshot)
I now tried to download another OpenVPN file of a regular server instead of VIP and get error 404....

What error do you get when trying to download immunity? On my Windows 10 VM it works perfectly
When I practiced on BOF room I transferred the vulnerable file to my kali using SMB and then to my Windows 10 VM to test the file locally

i m able to establish a vpn connection by running the configuration file but on the access page it doesn't show that i m connected.

in terms of writing down notes, do i write only notions, or do i rewrite the room in my own way so i can look back at it anytime

cause ive written more than 3000 words in my notes on one single room

That's really a question only you can answer. My notes are usually a very brief overview of any presented material, then the questions and answers with an explanation of how I got the answer. I highlight and note any commands used.

Actually, I've tried the methods that tryhackme instructs but still it cannot make the connection possible as it won't be able to connect via UDP. I even had the same issue with the hackthebox machines. The only way to connect with the machines was via TCP connection

For example you could download the task file to your local machine and then copy paste the hash to the attackbox with the clipboard. Or you could upload the files to a file hoster and download them inside the attackbox (only subs have internet access on attackbox). Or use scp to transfer the files.
