#

Hi, again me with my VPN connection issue, could someone help me?

eager fulcrum
#

You're being too vague.

rich flare
#

Yes, I explained it yesterday and 2 or 3 days ago... I am on a room, I ping the machine, I can work on it and after few sec or min, I loose the connection and if I restart my VPN, it works again.

#

For example, here I am working on a room where I need to bruteforce with Hydra, but it's hard because I lose the connection

#

Sometimes it comes back and Hydra continues, but it's very slow

#

Yesterday I had the same problem, when I tried to connect with RDP on a machine, connection was made but after few sec I lost the connection I had to restart the VPN

eager fulcrum
#

Make sure you're only running a single OpenVPN connection

rich flare
#

Yes I am sure

eager fulcrum
#

So only connected from one device, and that device is only running one connection

TryHackMe
• Step 1

Type ps aux | grep openvpn into your terminal and press enter

• Step 2

If there's more than one line (and the second doesn't have "grep" in it), do the following steps

• Step 3

Type killall openvpn into your terminal and press enter

• Step 4

Start the VPN with sudo openvpn <path-to-config>

rich flare
#

Yes

eager fulcrum
#

Check your openVPN logs when you get disconnected

#

See what it says

rich flare
#

For example, I was pinging the VM, it was not working.
Now, I didn't touch anything and ping is working again by itself

#

Hydra is going through also

eager fulcrum
#

That's not your openvpn logs.

rich flare
#

No it's not thank you Ninja

#

I know

#

I have nothing in /var/log/openvpn

eager fulcrum

The output from the command

I'll check at next disconnection

#

Good Afternoon. Is it common for free boxes to have lots of issues? (Keep having meterpreter/shell sessions lock up while running basic commands.) Just wondering if I were to subsribe would the boxes be more stable?

eager fulcrum
#

Subscribing gives the VMs more resources

#

it also means you can use the VIP VPN server

#

IDK if that'd make it more stable, it could be your shell isn't in a stable process.

#

Disclaimer, I don't get any commission from people subscribing but I am a paid content creator for THM

echo moon
#

Nice. Just joined today and really like the set up. I was just disapointed in what seemed like the stability of the VM for Blue. I will keep playing with it to see if I can pin point if its the VPN or VM. Most likly going to subscrib anyway, so are you sure you dont get a commission? 😋

leaden token
#

he is not getting any commissions :)

#

no mods or community mentors are paid

#

it was purely his own advice

eager fulcrum
#

I'm paid for content creation and that's it

eager fulcrum
#

"python2.7" that's probably your issue

merry blaze
#

but what can i do about it ? i have always started it by typing jupyter-notebook like it does not let me to enter python3 before it

eager fulcrum
#

This isn't really a technical problem related to tryhackme

I've tried wireguard and it's blocked too i think

eager fulcrum

You'd need the THM VPN to access THM content anyway

yeah they are blocking ovpn

it's deep packet inspection

Is the step for gaining access in the Blue room broken? I’ve tried multiple times bc I saw some finally got in on the 5th try. I’ve tried deploying a different vm. I checked the walkthroughs to verify I’m doing the right thing.

eager fulcrum
#

Are you using a virtual machine to attack?

#

Eternal blue is unreliable though

solar sparrow
#

I’m currently heading into work. I’ll check back around lunch.

#

No

#

I have parrot os on a laptop

#

I do have kali on a VM on my main machine.

That'll just be eternal blue being eternal blue then

Ok. I was thinking that might be it also. I’m like 3-4 months new to all this. Thanks

When I try to access the RP: Metasploit room from the Complete Beginner learning path, I get a notice that the room is private, but when I go to the featured rooms list on my dashboard I am able to enter the room. Not sure what's happening, but thought I'd let you guys know.

eager fulcrum

@neat lichen Can you check if they're actually the same link?

neat lichen

That must be it. The room listed on the Complete Beginner path is /room/metasploit and the room on my dashboard is /room/rpmetasploit

eager fulcrum

One of those is RP, the other is a standalone metasploit room

They're slightly different

Alright. Well the one on the learning path says it has been listed as private by the owner.

Hey peeps, really enjoyed the networkservice room by PoloMints, but I can't seem to reproduce two answers . On T6-#6 nmap gets stuck on the service scan stage and I can only get "unknown" as the service (I know it's telnet but the wording has me stuck). With T7-#2 I just can't seem to figure out the correct answer wording form the telnet welcome banner. I got all the flags but would like to get the badge lol -.- ... Thanks anyone who would take the time to help reproduce the answers.

whats the best way to make kali vm work faster? Nmap scans are taking very long...should I give it more RAM? It currently has 4GB

eager fulcrum
#

What nmap scan?

near jewel
#

I typically do nmap -sV -sC because it usually gives what I need.. longest its taken was like.. 4 minutes?

eager fulcrum
#

I want to say -sC is what takes a while?

#

I do nmap -sV -v -p- because it tells me open ports as it finds them

near jewel
#

Jason, do about half of what your main pc has. Maybe a gig more.. I have about 16 gb, so I use around 8 or 9 for my kali machine

eager fulcrum
#

I give my kali 4 and it's fine

#

Install the guest extensions etc

near jewel
#

What does guest extensions do on Kali?

eager fulcrum
#

Same thing they do on any VM

near jewel
#

I usually don't install them because doesn't seem to help much

#

My open vpn is installed on my on my host computer (windows). Linux is the virtual machine I do majority of the task through on sites such as tryhackme. Okay the issue I’m having. On tryhackme. The common Provsec escalation course in the section enumeration. It wants me to share a file to the target machine using a python server. Each time I’ve ran this the targets output has been “connection refused”. Since The course requires a vpn could it be there’s a up address I’m not seeing when I ifconfig in my Linux machine to which I’d then be able to shared the linEnum file with the target machine..... hate to be so verbose but maybe it’d help

eager fulcrum
#

@digital wigeon Ok, you need to think about this

#

If the VPN is running on your host, where does your VPN IP address point?

slim shadow
#

I do nmap -sV -v -p- because it tells me open ports as it finds them
@eager fulcrum yea i do this also..well without -v..i do -Pn -p- and sometimes -T4 and just now that took around 20 mins

digital wigeon
#

My host and not the virtual machine.

eager fulcrum
#

@digital wigeon Yeah, so where's the webserver running?

near jewel
#

Well, he could set his VM to bridged instead of NAT

eager fulcrum
#

@near jewel Nope.

#

Wouldn't work, IP address would still point to the windows host

#

Traffic would not reach the VM

#

There's only one solution, and I want them to think about it and reach it themselves

#

It's a lesson about networking

near jewel
#

Ah, lol

slim shadow
#

Idk if any of guys did vulnversity already..but the gobuster part is running about 20 mins now and its only 33% complete..using a medium list..I find thats a bit too slow

digital wigeon
#

👍

eager fulcrum
#

@digital wigeon Essentially, if you stop running the VPN on windows and start running it on your Kali VM the IP address will then point to your kali VM

#

You can still use the THM network with the VPN on windows because your host OS is doing NAT

#

It's the same way you can share 1 public IP for all the devices on your home network

orchid onyx
#

Hi Guys, sorry I am new here - can somebody point me to where I can find the room usernames and passwords?

eager fulcrum
#

If you are given them, they will be in the tasks

#

Most rooms require you to hack your way in.

orchid onyx
#

im working on the Nmap room and need to do some scans?

eager fulcrum
#

Ok, so you're missing something crucial

#

Were you told to log in?

#

Were you given creds?

#

or were you just told to scan that VM.

orchid onyx
#

nope no creds or instructions that I can see

eager fulcrum
#

You were told to scan that VM

#

You are not given access to it at any stage.

orchid onyx
#

log in and perform nmap scans and give answers on findings?

rustic ingot
#

thx james it works now

eager fulcrum
#

I will reiterate. You are not given access to the VM at any stage.

orchid onyx
#

only ip of the room and presented with login screen then

eager fulcrum
#

You don't understand

#

The only point of that VM is to be scanned

#

You scan it from your machine.

#

You do not interact with it in the browser. You do not SSH into it. You do not gain access at any stage.

orchid onyx
#

got it sorry new to this portal.

eager fulcrum
#

You have to avoid the assumptions

orchid onyx
#

Thanks a bunch

eager fulcrum
#

Just because one room got you to log in to something, doesn't mean others do.

orchid onyx
#

got it

eager fulcrum
#

Follow the room

#

If it's a walkthrough, like that one is, it will tell you what to do

#

It may seem like I'm being impatient

#

I'm just being blunt.

orchid onyx
#

cool - one other question - in your opinion is the subscription worth it if you compare to hackthisbox

eager fulcrum
#

HTB and THM have different purposes

orchid onyx
#

No problem I understand - not used to working on the live CTF environments

eager fulcrum
#

HTB is all challenges (well, the teaching content is uhhhhhh)

#

THM is designed to teach, although there are challenges

#

I can't say whether the sub is worth it or not. I'm paid to create rooms for THM so I could be considered biased

In the book, at "build your test lab", is written to set the virtual network IP scheme to be in a range of addresses starting by 10.x.x.x. Is this gonna cause issues with THM vpn, as it redirects connection to that range of IPs?

still happens on powershell with the laptop off.

eager fulcrum
#

Deploy just means "Turn on the VM"

golden ember
#

Ahhhh.... Thank you

#

Sorry, I'm having a hard time figuring out where to run this nMap command

#

Nmap**

eager fulcrum
#

On a machine where nmap is installed

#

The machine you're attacking with

#

People normally use Kali

#

Either from TryHackMe, or installed as a virtual machine

golden ember
#

Okay that leads me to another question, is their any status update on my subscription issue?

eager fulcrum
#

You emailed right?

golden ember
#

Yes

eager fulcrum
#

@vapid dawn Did you sort that?

golden ember
#

All taken care of, thank you guys

Quick question. I changed my password for the website and I went to my other computer and I was able to login with my old password that was saved on it ? I thought when you change the password it should Decline the old password right?

stone roost
#

you sure you don't have sync between passwords?

narrow charm
#

Nope

stone roost
#

can you open an incognito tab and try logging in with your old password

narrow charm
#

Looks like it’s a bug

eager fulcrum
#

Chrome syncs passwords

#

Can you log in with the new password?

narrow charm
#

Give me a sec

#

I don’t use chrome

#

No I wasn’t able to login with the old password

#

Very odd

hollow basin
#

Had to reinstall Kali due to failed update, and every single time I install it I have the same problem with the wireless connections. My internal wifi card is not detected and neither is a USB. Has anyone had the same issue who could help?

zealous yoke
#

Sounds like drivers @hollow basin you'll have to google around depending upon your hardware specs

trim rapids
#

Might have to manually install drivers, but I wouldn't know since I use ethernet sorry

hollow basin
#

Are drivers just an execution or do I have to do a significant amount of messing around

minor river
#

@hollow basin installing kali can be quite tricky because of the issues with the drivers. Why don’t you run it on VM? it’d solve so many problems, and, it’s also safer

hollow basin
#

I hate the Kali installation process so much.. anyone have a new /apt/sources.list

minor river
#

are you dual-booting?

hollow basin
#

Yes, but I mainly use kali

#

Windows is literally just to write images in case I need to re install

minor river
#

what drivers do you need? wifi?

hollow basin
#

Yes

#

But I'm also unable to do apt install kali-linux-all

minor river
#

it doesn’t work that way

#

can you mount the windows file system from kali?

hollow basin
#

No

minor river
#

why not, it’s definitely possible since you’re dual booting

hollow basin
#

Oh I can

minor river
#

just click on the windows drive

#

if you can, go back to windows and download the drivers there, so you can fetch them from kali afterwards

hollow basin
#

Alright, I can probably search how to install them, but I also couldn't get my apt sources.list to work

minor river
#

look up what your wifi card is and then just google it. Also, upon installation it must’ve told you “firmware x is missing”

#

that’s the driver you should be looking for

eager fulcrum
#

Unless it's USB chipset drivers?

#

They said they couln't get a usb stick working

#

lsusb

minor river
#

once you copy and paste the packages on kali, unzip it and then do sudo apt update , sudo apt install (package_name)

#

to unzip them (tar xf package_name)

hollow basin
#

Damn this so confusing I might just go back to useing the 2016 version

minor river
#

anyway, If I were you i’d go for Vm. Penetration testers use it on Vm as well. Kali isn’t an everyday distro

hollow basin
#

I like it, when it works, even for regular kind of tasks

minor river
#

download VMware player, then go to the kali website and download kali for vwware

#

you’ll be surprised how easy and effective it is.

#

running it on vm is really good, it’s fast and way more secure for hacking

hollow basin
#

I know, I've done it on my desktop, I just prefer the os

minor river
#

alright

#

hope you sort it out

hollow basin
#

I probably won't, but I'll won't respond cuz I know ninja tired of seeing me lol

minor river
#

why’s that? lol

#

hopefully i didn’t annoy him too, i was trying to help here😂 see you guys

zealous yoke
#

I doubt you've annoyed him / anyone lmao

hollow basin
#

I'm reinstall and hope it works I guess

I guess I could just use hashcat

-Making sure I have connection

-Following THM's troubleshooting guides
-Re generating the config file
-Reboot

anyone have idea how to install stegcracker on Kali 2020?
• pip install stegcracker - not working since its outdated
• pip3.6 install stegcracker - bash: pip3.6: command not found
• sudo curl https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Paradoxis/StegCracker/master/stegcracker > /bin/stegcracker - not working (404 Error if you go to the link on GitHub)
• pip3 install stegcracker - it says (Installing collected packages: stegcracker
Successfully installed stegcracker-2.0.7 but when I run "stegcracker image.jpg wordlist.txt" it says bash: /usr/bin/stegcracker: No such file or directory)

I am running out of ideas. Anyone had this issue? Thanks.

eager fulcrum
#

You broke your path I think

leaden token
#

try intalling python3-pip and then doing pip3 install stegcracker

eager fulcrum
#

By curling to /bin/stegcracker

leaden token
#

that's what I did, at least

dense rapids
#

By curling to /bin/stegcracker
@eager fulcrum do you have any idea how to fix that?

eager fulcrum
#

remove stegcracker through pip

#

IDEK any more

#

It sounds like your PATH isn't set up right

dense rapids
#

I've tried that. Its the same anything I try.

eager fulcrum
#

find / -type f -iname "stegcracker" 2>/dev/null

dense rapids
#

got it working with deleting everything that included "stegcracker" and installing it again with pip3

#

Thanks

You could've also tried python3 -m stegcracker

hi all. im trying to do a box where I know a subdomain is iused. I found it by fuzzing the subdoamins. However whenever I go to it, my ISPs "did not find this page" comes up. I added the domain to /etc/hosts .. but I cannot get it to load. can someone help?

#

the domain itself loads but not the subdomain

eager fulcrum
#

@torn fossil Ok, DNS.

#

A subdomain is a separate record to the main domain unless you have a wildcard

#

You need to add the subdomain

torn fossil
#

to etc hosts?

eager fulcrum
#

For example, remote.tryhackme.com will be a separate record to www.tryhackme.com
