Hi, I just had a quick question. I was trying to connect to the beginner course on kali linux and when I try to connect it says connection timed out. I know that the port is right the IP is right and I was able to connect to other Ip's but not this one, any help would be appriciated.

hey guys, i'm having an issue while i am trying to deploy my machines in the room. my vpn connection says 'Initialization Sequence Completed' which means i'm good to go but when i deploy a machine and wait for the required time, i cannot connect to my given virtual machine ip, i cant even ping it. This is getting solved by terminating and re-deploying the machine like 5-6 times but sometimes its not getting fixed and its really tiring me up. Can you help me out what to do? Correct

Machines that you deploy are unique to you

@amber dome You can no longer submit issues on rooms

Oh ok I didn't know! Thanks for the quick support.

So what would be the best way to let the owner of a room know of an issue?

You could ping them here

Cannot SSH in to Learn Linux room

Hi guys,

I subscribed a few days ago, deployed the Kali machine and launched the Learn Linux room.

I was able to SSH in as shiba1 and shiba2 with no problem and completed all tasks up to 21, then logged out.

When I tried to resume the tasks the next day after logging in, I was unable to connect via SSH (Permission denied).

I am using the IP address of the Kali machine as the SSH IP, because the Kali machine instructions state that the TryHackMe deployed machines share the same network and there is no OpenVPN requirement (I can't recall if I used the same IP address on the previous successful attempt, or if there was a different IP address for the Learn Linux room displayed on the room banner. Currently there is not a separate address listed.)

Thanks!

barren birch
#

@spice tulip Deployed machines last for an hour unless you extend the time

#

Did you redeploy the box?

spice tulip
#

Tried a fresh deployment of both boxes about 30 min ago, both launched within minutes of each other. Will refresh again if you think it will help.

barren birch
#

Have you got Kali now?

#

And can you copy the IP of the zthlinux box into the chat?

eager fulcrum
#

@spice tulip You should be connecting to SSH on the zthlinux box, from the kali one

#

That's a public IP

#

Not the IP for ZTHLinux

#

@naive dust Can you blur the IP in the screenshot? People keep doing it

spice tulip
#

Where would I find the IP for the ZTHlinux box?

#

I thought that I saw an IP address on the banner for the Learn Linux room, but I could be wrong, and it's not appearing today.

You can do this stuff on other operating systems, but as you're finding out, it takes a lot more effort

Nowhere near as hard as setting up a hacking environment on Windows

But no, just download VirtualBox or VMWare Player

Then search for "Kali linux virtualbox image"

Download a .ova and import it in

Hello, I'm connected to the vpn and I'm trying a challenge. I am trying to connect to the webserver for the first challenge. It says I need to connect to

I'm not sure which vpn this is referring to. I've tried a few of them. Can anyone help?

Hi all!
While doing the Basic Pentesting Box, I reinstalled enum4linux for the first time in like 2 years.
I cannot seem to get any username since I get the following error:

Use of uninitialized value $users in print at ./enum4linux.pl line 874.
Use of uninitialized value $users in pattern match (m//) at ./enum4linux.pl line 877.

The github error to it just referred to a pullrequest, which at least for me did not help. Also other searches online did not really push to any successes.

I am using Manjaro with gnome

So far I did not find any solution, maybe anyone can help?

Hi guys , I've been facing issues in regards of the connection . Openvpn is very slow and keeps disconnecting everynow and then . I kept killing it and regenerate my configuration file but nothing worked. Finally i thought about subscribing and using the vip server and its still the same. I even tried using the virtual kali machine through ssh without vpn , its better but still I'm facing issues with disconnection in which only terminating the room and redeploying it works. Also rdp is not usable at all. I would truly appreciate any help as It takes me hours to finish a single room .

barren birch
#

@neat carbon What OS are you using?

neat carbon
#

Parrot os

barren birch
#

Can you show me the results of ps aux | grep openvpn?

neat carbon
barren birch
#

You don't currently have it running

neat carbon
#

Already tried kill openvpn processes and restart it several times

#

yeah im using ssh through the virtual kali machine

barren birch
#

Ok, what happens when you start the VPN up? What does ps show then?

#

Hang on, you're SSHing into the online Kali?

neat carbon
#

yes as it is slightly better than connecting through openvpn

barren birch
#

Yeah, that should be working. You're saying it's still slow?

neat carbon
#

Ok, what happens when you start the VPN up? What does ps show then?
@barren birch its shows open vpn processes normally and I can interact with the rooms but its very slow and keeps on disconnecting everynow and then

#

Yeah, that should be working. You're saying it's still slow?
@barren birch its better than connecting through openvpn but the issue is suddenly ill lose the connection and all the sessions

barren birch
#

My guess would be that it's opening more than one tunnel, which would be weird if you're only running it once. The VPN being slow and/or erratic is usually a result of multiple tunnels being open

neat carbon
#

more likely the rooms im interacting with them are the ones which keeps on disconnecting

barren birch
#

Can you try starting it up then running ps aux | grep openvpn again? Just to get it out of the way

neat carbon
#

sure one sec

barren birch
#

I mean, there's a chance there's something up with your account config files, but the rooms themselves will be stable. Advantages of AWS and all.

neat carbon
#

I mean, there's a chance there's something up with your account config files, but the rooms themselves will be stable. Advantages of AWS and all.
@barren birch I generated the file several times , I mean its weird earlier it was way better , im noticing recently the issue started happening

@barren birch sure , Ill deploy one now , thanks

barren birch
#

Up and running?

neat carbon
#

I had a room deployed already but I couldn't interact with it at all , I redeployed it again to check

#

I also tried rdp again and its not working the virtual kali machine just freezes

barren birch
#

What's the IP of the room?

#

The Kali machine should be a lot more stable than that. @deep trellis will probably be asleep, but when wakes up I'm sure he'll be able to take a look at that particularly

neat carbon
#

10.10.63.204 , I can interact with it using ssh only through the kali virtual machine

#

but the problem is suddenly the room will die in the middle of the session

#

The Kali machine should be a lot more stable than that. @deep trellis will probably be asleep, but when wakes up I'm sure he'll be able to take a look at that particularly
@barren birch sounds great , thanks

barren birch
#

Ah. Steel Mountain. Windows.

#

It's definitely up just now, and I assume working for you? Can you connect to it directly from parrot just now?

neat carbon
#

I can but its very slow , for example the webpage keeps on loading but doesnt show the picture of bill πŸ˜† while the kali machine loads it perfectly

#

I can exploit the machine using metasploit from kali immediately but from my parrot it doesnt work and if it did , it disconnects after a while

barren birch
#

Ok, and do you still only have one VPN connection open? No more have appeared?

neat carbon
#

yup

barren birch
#

That definitely sounds buggy. How's your connection normally (i.e. to external sites)?

neat carbon
#

perfect no issues

#

I gotta ask is there anyway to connect through openvpn using tcp instead of udp?

barren birch
#

One more thing, what happens if you try another box?

#

Not yet, certainly, with regards to TCP vs UDP. A few people have been asking though

neat carbon
#

Honestly I didn't try any other box tonight l'll check another one

One more thing, what happens if you try another box?
@barren birch

barren birch

b) I've done the room
c) Pars strongarmed me into making the writeup for it...

round loom
#

props to you man. This is really helping me up

naive dust
#

Paradox did make this

#

<3 @round loom

#

@barren birchI didn't strongarm you

round loom
#

thanks to both u guys. holy shit

#

this is amazing ahha

#

gotta keep going

naive dust
#

You were just sick about being asked about task 43

You were just sick about being asked about task 43
@naive dust True...

#

That might help @round loom ^^

round loom
#

hahah @barren birch thanks for creating/founding such a cool concept of a room

barren birch
#

Haha -- that room is all Pars

#

Some of the other tutorials are mine

#

I just did the write-up for zthlinux

naive dust
#

And it's a good writeup

#

The best writeup

#

The ultimate writeup

round loom
#

yes but the questions are weird... im sorry

#

"how do you specify which shell is used when you login" HINT: **

#

what other answer would it be beside su like what

barren birch
#

@naive dust -- this one's for you 😁

round loom
#

LMAO

#

feed me fathers

naive dust
#

Excuse me

round loom
#

please feed me, I meant

naive dust
#

It's in the man page

#

When in doubt

#

It's always in the man page

round loom
#

wtf is man page

barren birch
#

THAT is one of mine

naive dust
#

Reread task 4 @round loom

barren birch
#

It might help with that too πŸ˜„

round loom
#

I reread it

#

nothing about a manpage

#

btw i hate putty

naive dust
#

It might not be task 4

#

There's a task close to the beginning on man pages

#

Everyone hates putty

round loom
#

pls just give anwer im to lazy to research man page and im sure it has no impact on penetration learning LMAO

naive dust
#

Uh

round loom
#

if anything I figured the answer would be "su <user>

#

but its only 2 characters

naive dust
#

Man pages are litterally how you find out the information about tools

round loom
#

ohh okay so its important

naive dust
#

And researching either way is an incredibly important skill

round loom
#

okay then i'll do it

#

hmm

#

man pages

barren birch
#

Mhm

#

Research

#

for the record

#

Is the most important skill in pentesting

naive dust
#

man <command>

barren birch
#

Without a doubt

#

No one knows everything -- the ability to go and learn is incredibly important

#

Nowhere better to start with a new tool than the man pages

empty condor
#

Hi everyone, I'm new in this neighborhood

leaden token
#

hi @empty condor , welcome

pallid verge
#

there's no passwords or anything

naive dust
#

It's just made to learn how to use tmux locally, so no need to deploy anything and so no ssh iirc

pallid verge
#

ohh right. I was wondering why there's a deploy link

#

thanks though

definetly understandeble if you aint got a linux session at hands to use tmux in that its confusing with the deploy link : )

Anyone else having connection issues with common Linux privesc?

eager fulcrum
#

@wide summit It's your own instance, so most likely your VPN

I've already re downloaded my VPN file. Should I try it again?

TryHackMe
β€’ Step 1

Type ps aux | grep openvpn into your terminal and press enter

β€’ Step 2

If there's more than one line (and the second doesn't have "grep" in it), do the following steps

β€’ Step 3

Type killall openvpn into your terminal and press enter

β€’ Step 4

Start the VPN with sudo openvpn <path-to-config>

eager fulcrum
#

I mean what issues are you getting? @wide summit

polar fiber
#

I would love to learn more on the tools you guys use to deploy the computers, any where I can read up on that?

barren birch
#

@polar fiber it's done through AWS EC2 instances with Node.js running the website

eager fulcrum
#

They're full VMs rather than containers

barren birch
#

That should give you somewhere to start πŸ™‚

wide summit
#

Ive connected but when I ping the IP I get 100% packet loss with the exception that it sometimes works but not for long @eager fulcrum

polar fiber
#

Thanks @barren birch was looking to read up so I can setup my own in my lab

eager fulcrum
#

@wide summit Yeah that's your VPN not working

barren birch
#

Ah, you're better off with just local VMs in a virtual network for a home lab

#

You could do it with EC2, but it will be more expensive

eager fulcrum
#

You can probably use VMWare or KVM and automate those

wide summit
#

@eager fulcrum thank you

eager fulcrum
#

Try the mutlivpn

polar fiber
#

I run proxmox today with a mix of 14 machines

eager fulcrum
#

You can probably automate it

polar fiber
#

But love the way you guys automate the setup up of a machine for a specific user

eager fulcrum
#

They're from an OVA behind the scenes

#

Well, AMI which is AWS's OVA

polar fiber
#

@eager fulcrum nice thanks then I know what way to go πŸ™‚

#

So all users connect to same vpnserver and then in the deploy script you used add a fw rule to allow traffic from that specific user?

Depends what you're trying to do

And what payloads

#

And a dozen other factors

round loom
#

if its just a simple payload that gives me remote access to their computer using powershell

eager fulcrum
#

google run powershell script windows and don't do illegal things

proven lark
#

@proven lark try redownloading config file from thm
@dawn hatch Well, I wasn't erasing the configs from the OpenVPN GUI, hence not being able to connect even after regenerating πŸ™‚

round loom
#

@eager fulcrum not gonna do anything illegal just wanting to test out and build securty knowledge on my own pc

eager fulcrum
#

@proven lark Also, you'll find it really useful to have a kali VM

And then you'll want to VPN from the VM

proven lark
#

Oh, ok

eager fulcrum
#

You can do a lot of web stuff from windows

proven lark
#

I'll do that, thank you πŸ™‚

eager fulcrum
#

But it starts getting harder and harder

pallid verge
#

hey guys, is just the deployed machine IP address enough information enough to ssh into? I feel like I've missed an important area of theory. I'm in this room https://tryhackme.com/room/commonlinuxprivesc but it could be any room. I deploy the machine, but I don't know the password, so I don't know how to access the machine. I know some are for ssh and some are fully vm, but I don't understand which one is which

eager fulcrum
#

@pallid verge Read the task

#

It tells you the creds

#

SSH is just a way of connecting, they're all full VMs

#

Some (Very few) have browser control but for most you're just given the IP

#

Sometimes you're told what to do

#

Often that's the challenge

pallid verge
#

yeh, I guessed that would be the challenge, but I'm stuck at the start of most rooms 😩

eager fulcrum
#

@pallid verge In that room, it does tell you the creds

#

So that's just reading

pallid verge
#

in which part?

#

Deploy the machine
Connect to the TryHackMe OpenVPN Server (See https://tryhackme.com/access for help!)
Make sure you're sitting comfortably, and have a cup of Tea, Coffee or Water close!

#

I can only see this, but that's not clear to me.

eager fulcrum
#

#

yeah it's later on. Basically you need to read the info first @pallid verge

pallid verge
#

ohhh, so you don't need it until that point? I can see it wants me to download a file before telling me the credentials

#

that's why I was trying to get into the machine

#

thanks though.

dawn hatch
#

@dawn hatch Well, I wasn't erasing the configs from the OpenVPN GUI, hence not being able to connect even after regenerating πŸ™‚
@proven lark I didnt say you have deleted the file, a few times when i couldnt connect, i would download a new file and delete the old one, and that would solve my connection problem

ashen basalt
#

When i try to install OVPN it gives me an error message including the: TAP-Windows adapters.
I don't have an extra network installed named: Unknown.
i've searched the internet looking for any help, installed many different OPVN, to no luck.
I don't trust myself going into reg-edit, because i have no experience with it.
Does anyone also have this problem or is any familiar with it and would like to assist me?
