According to the info, I've downloaded multiple times the ovpn, running the command sudo openvpn <file>.ovpn. After spinning it up, I run ifconfig tun0 where I can see my IP starting with 192.168.x.x.

I tried a couple of MTU values like: 1000, 1200, 1300, and others, but failed every time I ran the THM script that verifies my connection. It always fails at the MTU step with the error: MTU value failed at 1000.

• when connected to THM VPN, you can indeed connect to the target VMs, and if that target VM is set up to reply to ping requests (not all are 🙃 ), you should see that in the ouput of your ping command
• and of course, if you are not connected to THM VPN, you have no way of connecting to the target VMs (ping, ssh, http, rdp, whatever), except if you use the alternative of THM AttackBox
  the context of my question was to see whether you have found some place in THM web site where there is possibly inconsistency whereby you are connected to THM VPN with a status page saying otherwise, despite refreshing (there was such situation in the past)

When I run the ping command pointing to the room's IP address, I can successfully receive the packets. So, it appears that the VPN connection is working.

this is a challenge room, so ping or nmap are enough to confirm THM VPN work with the target VM
as you have played a little bit earlier with tweaking the MTU value, you can do that when you have issues getting responses from the target VM despite ping working (typically, when you browse to the target IP if there is web server and the browser hangs) But as matter of fact, you can run that MTU command anyways without noticeable degradation

now that you are connected and can interact with room VMs, I suggest you carry on
later, as you get more comfortable with THM environment, you may come cross some inconsistent situation: at that point, I suggest you search THM Discord for other users reporting the same issue, or come back to this channel

I always run into this issue with like 4/9 machines or something where I'm connected to the network, no conflicting vpn sessions, just the one openvpn, and can even connect to 10.10.10.10 and the network says I'm connect. once you can ping192.168.128.1, personally I consider this is enough evidence to say you are connected to THM VPN By that I mean there may be a few places in THM ecosystem providing inconsistent status information
then, I suggest you nmap the target VM: nmap -Pn <IP> so you discover the services available on the target Context: no point doing, say, curl against the target IP if nmap did not reveal port 80 is open 🙃

you can change Region in Manage Account, but:

• I have seen a mechanism whereby THM assigns the Region automatically (check this: #site-support message), although I do not know if that feature is experimental
• make sure you are consistent: if you change your Region before spawning a new target VM while already connected to THM VPN, you may have to stop your current VPN session assigned to the older Region and start a new VPN session corresponding to the newer region

Hi! I need some help getting my VirtualBox Kali VM to talk to the TryHackMe VPN network.

According to the Access page on the TryHackMe website I am connected, and my VM also shows that the VPN tunnel is up.

I have also run the thm-troubleshoot script and got this result:

• I suggest we choose Europe for VM and VPN Region
• instead of focusing on ping working or not from your Arch VM, can you do nmap -Pn <IP of Pickle Rick>: -Pn skips host discovery, hence nmap traffic will be only TCP (no ICMP)

• THM VPN for network rooms is different and more like the previous VPN flavour:
  • you do not get 192.168.x.x IP addresses, instead 10.x.x.x
  • you can regenerate the VPN file
    It would be interesting to see if you can connect to Breaching AD (https://tryhackme.com/room/breachingad) after downloading the v2 VPN file as per screenshot The VPN interface for that room is breachad The test then is to check if you can ping the DC at 10.200.70.101Make sure the network is running and that you do not run both THM VPN and THM AttackBox
• for some users troubleshooting their VPN, they set up a temporary hotspot throught their smartphone, and that allows to use a different network than the usual one In some situations, like here #room-help message, that provided a breakthrough If you have that option, that would be worth a try

I'm on Kali Linux (no VM, real OS), and I keep getting hammered with CAPTCHAs on sites, even after solving them—it just loops and asks again instantly. Super annoying.

I'm not using a VPN. I already cleared my cache and cookies and even tried rebooting my router for a new IP.

Any idea what Kali setting or browser fingerprinting thing is making me look like a bot? I need to know how to spoof my setup to look like a normal user (Windows/Mac).

I start the VM, wait five minute, then Click Deploy again wait, Deploy rule again wait giving sufficient amount of time. Once logged, again i wait 5 plus minute to load and giving sufficient time. And when i start the lab, I get just one log. 🙂

Depends on your luck. For some, the refresh worked. For majority, the refresh never worked. Rules never got loaded.

Many years back, if something didnt work in Microsoft, just restart. Now they are persistence, even after restart it wont work 🙂

I have a kali VM running in QEMU/KVM over bridge network and I when I try to connect to THM machines via openvpn it doesn't work.

connection seems okay (sudo openvpn (usrname).ovpn seems to run but pinging machines or going to https:10.10.10.10 doesn't work. It keep loading indefinitely.

when pinging machine ip packets get transmitted but none get received. I can use/ping other websites with no issues.

Anyone on Arch experienced anything similar?

Hi, I need help with an OpenVPN connection issue.

I originally tried connecting to TryHackMe using WSL (first Ubuntu, then Kali), but OpenVPN never worked properly. I kept getting routing issues and could not reach the target machines from WSL. After that, I switched to a full dual-boot setup with Parrot OS, but I am still facing the same problem when trying to connect to THM VPN.

Here’s what I have already tried:

Switched between multiple WSL distros (Ubuntu → Kali → Parrot)

Installed OpenVPN fresh on each system

Downloaded a new THM .ovpn file

Tried both UDP and TCP profiles

Tested internet/ DNS / tun0 setup

Still cannot ping or access machines after connecting

At this point, I’m not sure if it is a routing issue, a THM server issue, or something on my system.

Could someone please help me troubleshoot or advise what I should check next?

@remote sigil LinkedIn login is currently disabled/removed on many platforms, including TryHackMe, because LinkedIn changed its OAuth requirements recently. When LinkedIn updates its API permissions or authentication policies, third-party sites must update their integration. Until they do, the “Login with LinkedIn” option disappears.

So the reason you can’t see LinkedIn as a login option anymore is:

✔️ LinkedIn login is temporarily unavailable due to API changes
✔️ The platform removed the button to prevent login errors
✔️ You can still log in using your email/password (or Google, GitHub, etc.)

If your account was created using LinkedIn, you can normally:

use the “Forgot Password” option with the same email your LinkedIn uses

OR contact the platform support to manually attach an email login

What is MTU?

The Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) is the largest size, in bytes, that a network layer packet can have, including the IP header, without being fragmented.

Default Ethernet MTU: 1500 bytes.

By setting the MTU on the VPN interface (tun0) to a very low value like 1200, you force your system to create packets small enough that when the OpenVPN overhead is added, the final encapsulated packet is still well under the safe limit of 1500 bytes, preventing fragmentation and improving stability/speed.

ping target machine works like 50% of the time, times out the rest.

Tried changing MTU to 1200, and 1000 still doesn't resolve it.

Ran the THM Script to try and find the issue output as follows:

I was recommended to switch on another server, so I did and then redid the openvpn process. but, while I started an AoC room, it automatically switched me to some other server, saying it got better connectivity. I still get an ip address when I list my ip addresses while I connect my device to ovpn, the tun0 connection is showing. But I'm unable to ping the ip addresses assigned by target machines to solve AoC rooms. Please help, I don't understand what's wrong. Do I need to make my ovpn connection again from the server I was automatically assigned or is this an issue from tryhackme's side where the machines are facing some issues?

The cloud details has been removed as far as I can see - it was there earlier, now there is just a username and temp access password, but it is also mentioned that there are issues with the temp access password in Azure - and trying logging in, asks for a normal password - so Day 10 will have to wait, until it has been fixed *<:-)

Are you running on Linux or Windows? On Linux, there could be some issues with OpenVPN implementation in the network-manager, I have had that issue myself on Kali just recently - I ended up starting the openvpn client directly from the shell with sudo, and I got access through the vpn that way.

About connecting via OpenVPN
I tried connecting via OpenVPN from Kali Linux, but it didn't work.
Any advice would be appreciated.
The situation is as follows, and if there's any other information I need, please let me know.

1. I downloaded the .ovpn file and used OpenVPN. In tryhackme's "OpenVPN Access Details," "Connection" is listed as "Connected."
2. I can connect to the machine in the "tutorial" room from a web browser in Kali Linux. I can't connect to machines in other rooms.
3. Running the "curl 10.10.10.10/whoami" command also fails. Also, when I tried "thm-troubleshoot," I got the following messages: "[-] MTU value failed at 1000, aborting MTU check" and "[-] Something went wrong -- please ask for further assistance in the TryHackMe Discord server, subreddit, or forum."
4. I have already upgraded Kali Linux.

I'm having the exact same problem.. The docs are out of date point to the old "regenerate" option.. I did try switching regions and switching back. That behavior about being able to connect to just one room and not others seems to stem from the routes which are being pushed when connecting to the VPN. I'm only getting the 10.64.0.0/12 route being sent down. Shouldn't I see a route for the network that the 10.10.10.10 is on?
-I used to be a premium user. Had an original config. Resubscribed again. Stopped using that old file and started fresh with a new premium config file

seems like going back through the history others have had similar problems and thats its a known issue.. trying to read back and see if there is an actual fix or its something that has be "wait" to fix it.

I'm getting a bug only on Firefox... I can login fine on Chrome but on Firefox I login, it redirects me to the two-factor page and then redirects me back to the login page. Very weird bug but I solved it in the end... Turns out it's NOT related to Firefox at all, but If I sign in with Google via the 'Sign in with Google' prompt that appears in the top-right of the page. It takes me to the 'What's your occupation page' and then takes me back to the login.

Then if I login normally (or via any other method) I get stuck in an endless loop. The way to fix it is, to clear your cookies for TryHackMe. Login normally (NOT via the Google prompt).

Hello, I am unsure what my VPN profile is doing wrong. I am unable to touch any of the ips for the aoc origins sidequest. All my VPN profiles receive 115 bytes every roughly 5 seconds but otherwise get no return traffic. OpenVPN is running as an Administrator and the config was working yesterday

It is showing a successful connection, and every so often openvpn shows a spike of input and pops up a connected notification

That room in particular still seems to be having/causing a lot of trouble. I was eventually able to get it to work last night by just waiting until one unlocked--but aside from that, I'm not sure there's much that can be done. I don't think THM anticipated the amount of interest in advent or something.

I’m having a persistent OpenVPN issue on TryHackMe.
The VPN connects and assigns a 192.168.x.x IP, but the VPN gateway 192.168.128.1 is unreachable (100% packet loss), so no machines are accessible in any room.

I already opened a support ticket via the Contact Us form, but the issue has been ongoing for over a week.

Hi everyone, I need help. I just unlinked my main Gmail from an old account (Account A) because I want to use it on my current main account (Account B).

Even though the email is now free, when I try to add it to Account B, I get an "Invalid Email" error.

I have tried:

Checking for extra spaces.

Using the Gmail "dot" trick (aliasing) -> Still says "Invalid".

Trying via Browser and Mobile App.

Is this happening because of the 48-hour "revert change" window from the security email? Has anyone experienced this cooldown?

I wasnt answered previously so I'm gonna ask again...for the Cyber Security 101 path, the room REMnux:Getting Started becomes unresponsive when loading. I only have Tasks 5 and 6 to complete so I really want this done. I have finished the entire path except those tasks for that room. I have restarted my computer, attempted to complete room on a different device, updated the software version on both of those devices, as well as cleared my cache and cookies. All with no change. I wanted to send an email about the issue since I was not answered last time but was directed to let someone know here on Discord. Any help would be great as I'm not sure if its a "me" problem or user-wide.

Hey, I tried the script but it didnt work for me. So I am adding this info here to help others.

The Script set the mtu to 1410 (or around it), however that alone didnt solve the problem.

After some research I have also added this line:

mssfix 1160

And then it worked

It seems the recommended is to have the mssfix 40 bytes smaller than the mtu actually. I am still reading about it.

Yep, 1410 mtu with 1360 mssfix is working fine for me, I guess I wont touch it again.
