where / when the folder .idea is created,, doesnt exist before

You probably opened the project in the InjelliJ IDEA IDE. The folder contains metadata and project setting related to the IDE. The same way that the .vscode folder contains metadata and project settings for the VSCode IDE.

If you won't use IDEA to edit this project, it can be safely deleted
