Bellingcat’s website has some good resources on geolocation.

Most of the from (my perspective anyway) it’s just tying little bits of information together to piece the whole picture.

Start with shadows to narrow down what direction you are facing then move on to unique identifiers such as buildings, signs, landscape, etc to further narrow down the location.

Traffic signage and road markings can also give you clues on the country, for example, like if you notice the traffic is left-handed that narrows it down a lot, or a marking specific to a continent

Sometimes you can find traffic signage with place names which is very convenient

But a lot of the time we have a vague idea of where something is, so it's more about what direction is the picture facing, what buildings can you see, roads, etc. and that enables you to go on sat and start finding matches
