...I...don't understand this take...the primary reason I'm really wanting that SNES Bowser Castle 3 is specifically because it's NOT flat.

And even if it is the gimmick, giving SNES tracks a pass for it and not others purely cos it's the gimmick feels biased in a sense to me. Flat is Flat.

Track layouts matter

Verticality and gimmicks aren't a must-have for a track to be fun

I won't judge Sunset Wilds until I've got a feel of it, but I'll say this about SNES Mario Circuit 3:
Part of it is nostalgia, sure, but it can sell itself on its layout too. I like the sharp corners that feel rewarding when you manage to maintain as much of your speed as possible.

Not the best track in the world, but still one of my favorites.

I alright with Mario Circuit 3 too, don't get me wrong. My point was just calling out dissing Sunset for being flat while giving SNES tracks a pass for it.

why is that ?

well simply because SNES tracks need to retain flatness in order to evoke nostalgia

when the GBA tracks came out, double dash was just around the corner, the n64 tracks already existed, you KNOW they didn't intend for those tracks to be flat, if the GBA was more powerful it wouldn't have been flat

but for the SNES tracks it's different, they didn't know any better, the technology wasn't advanced enough for them to imagine anything but flat tracks, it's all they could do back then

so respecting that idea i think is important and good

as i said, keeping the snes tracks flat is like keeping the n64 stages low poly in smash

they didn't upgrade dream land, but they did upgrade fountain of dreams

fountain of dreams wasn't intended to be left in the state it was back on the gamecube, it was meant to be beautiful, so they upgraded it

(okay smartass i know the n64 stages weren't meant to be ugly too but there's a charm to it so they opted to keep that charm
whereas in Melee you already feel as though they wanted to make the most beautiful stuff they could, look at the number of polygons for each fighter, it's insane, they wanted this to be a looker)
