I am running a campaign right now that is set at the time that RA Salvatore set the Crystal Shard.
This allows me a back drop of events to interact with. Then I have used some back story from my players to build some story, and from there it goes on and I plan a couple sessions at a time.
is there any special requirements that are different when playing DnD online rather than in person?
Usually cross-talk needs more proactive management, often by the DM
In person, when someone wants to talk there are visual cues, but you don't get that when playing online, even when using a webcam
This article has some good advice.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online
The only real “requirement”, though, is a means to communicate.
There’s even text-only games that don’t use a mic or cam at all.
Playing online opens a lot of new options that are not really enabled in person but yes, you don't have to put more work into communication.
one option that is not mentioned there is Foundry which is a great VTT that you can host on your own and there are 100 of creator in their community that have done some fantastic work on integrations. If you don't like to self host there are options like the Forge who will host it for you you just need the Foundry License.
The article doesn't list all the VTTs available, and several have been released or grown in popularity since that article was published in 2020. Also getting into stuff like hosting and integrations is a bit beyond the scope of this channel. That's more #dm-discussion
True Enough, I just love Foundry so I wanted to mention it as and example there.
Still a bit out of scope for this channel
Understood,
Hi. I'm new ...
I recently made my character in D&D but I do not know how to play! It is better to say that I do not know where to play !!!
Is there an app to download? Or something like that
Hello, you can have a look in #looking-for-players to see if any DMs are offering games that interest you :)
ty
If you are playing online, then you will probably be using voice call software and a Virtual Tabletop, but which ones will be decided by the group you join
where would I go to find people to play DnD online with? like is there a specific server for online only or what?
?looking
We have four channels to help you find your next game:
• #looking-for-players — Dungeon Masters/groups looking for players.
• #750812887697588356 — Players or groups looking for Dungeon Masters.
• #looking-for-community — Communities looking for members.
• #paid-looking-for-game — Professional DMs advertising services.
If you can’t see any of these channels, you will need to head to #880965682462875679 and select the appropriate role depending on exactly what you're looking for.
Typically what you would do if you are looking to paly online, since you are using the DnDBeyond Tools look there for a game, that is online from there you will be able to suss out a number of different online game platforms. The article posted above how to play D&D online is a great starter. From there once you find a group you are golden, if you find a platform you like you can also look at their discord in the same vain looking for group or looking for players. If you want to do in person, depending on your age there are school groups, Game shop groups, there is also the WOC adventurers leagues that can help you get started with this game. My suggestion is cast a wide net try what you can to find the right game for you.
Thanks for letting me know, I really appreciate it!
What are the limits of the 5th level spell geas? Can I command someone to follow my commands with an unlimited amount of commands or is there a rule against that?
That'd be a question more suited to #dnd-rules or #dm-discussion as it goes beyond the basics of the game (which is what this channel is for)
Ok thank you
positive vibes 🙂 im new, just joined ! hope yall doing awesome !
Ive literally never played the game
Well no better time to start than the present
hi, i played dnd a couple of times before, unfortunately, people i used to play with are no longer reachable, so im trying to find a group. Can anyone give me advice?
Hello, you can browse through #looking-for-players and see if any of the DMs there appeal to you. I would recommend maybe checking r/lfg on Reddit, possibly Roll20's forums aand any other places you can think of to throw your net as wide as possible
Hey all
hi
Hey guys how are you? I'm new to D&D anyone got any advice on how to start with D&D
Hey there! Welcome to the hobby and the server
We have some useful links pinned in this very channel, that would be a good place to start
haha I have never played this game before
good luck, i'm sure you'll love it
have thought about making a terraria homebrew campaign
👍🏼
and to account for different classes like bard iand rouge im thinking calamity
ok big bad evil guy sorted
well kinda
Yharim from the calamity mod
I have him as a protection fighter and might make him level 1 wizard
ok so yharim was a king, so Folk Hero background
Honestly even just the terraria base game would be a really interesting campaign. Don't focus on the "classes" of terraria too much. Just use its lore, monsters, and magic items
IDK anything about the calamity mod, so it could definitely still be good. My point is that you shouldn't get hung up on game mechanics that don't transfer well
A Terraria game should be classless and very dungeon crawl-y.
Hi all, happy adventuring! I'm new as well...and pretty darn new to the DnD scene. Apparently, what I've played is called a one-shot?
An adventure that completed in just one sitting?
Yes. We played for a couple of hours and were finished by the end of that time
From my experience a one shot is a game finished in one session. A campaign is a game that lasts multiple sessions.
Definitely a one-shot, then. It was highly entertaining, and I look forward to trying a campaign sometime. 👍
I disagree. Terraria has a deep enough lore for a fairly typical campaign. I might do something like a group of settlers trying to create a small town if you really wanted to replicate the game, but I think as long as you keep the overarching plot of the lunar cultists trying to create a new body for The Moon Lord, and the corruption and crimson, I think it would fit the spirit of the game just fine
Hey, I pretty sure that this hasn't been stated at least a couple millions times before, but I'm a new comer to this here game and looking for a nice, beginner friendly session that me and another friend of mine can enter or start. He's played the game while growing up, but only with his family, and never online. Anyone want to take a chance?

hi!! Im a new dm and im having trouble understanding how combat works?? I understand the majority i think but I dont really understand how turns work all that much???
Like, does it start with Movement->Action->Bonus action for everyone?? HELP,,, IUFHAIWF
Hello, combat starts with deciding the order that the party and enemies take their turns, this often is rolling for initiative.
On a creature or player's turn, they can Move and/or Use their Action and/or use their Bonus Action in whatever order they chose. Once they complete their turn, the next creature or player in the turn order take their turn. A round of combat completes when everyone has take their turn
OHH OKAY TYSM I thought it was a particular order of things you could do in a turn omg tysm
Wait wait wait are there any scenarios where a player would be given an extra thing to do in their turn though? I feel like there isn't but i also feel like ive seen that happening before in dnd podcasts and such just going off memory??
Most things are covered by Action, bonus action or move. I think the rules also mention an object interaction.
Ultimately it is up to the DM to decide what is allowable in combat
ah alr alr i see!! Tysm for the help :)!
Fighter, for example, has action surge to use once per short rest to have one extra action.
The haste spell also gives an extra action (read the spell description for detail on its limitations).
I said the calamity because its very DND-ish
and I dont really have a way to implement the DND classes into terraria due to its DND-ish feel already, because it has preset classes that work best by just using those, and calamity adds healers, rouges and a guy that throws things, dont know what class that would be tho, and a mod for the mod adds a beekeeper class
Im new to DND, i have no idea where to start.

Why is this so hard? I signed up for a game with a "professional" DM and 3 days before I still haven't made a character, gotten any information, bailed on that.
Found a second game, actually got to make a character, logged on to something called foundry, screen is all messed up, don't know what the heck is going on. but using Discord for voice , and I can't understand what anyone is saying. All mumbles. Trying to troubleshoot while everyone else is playing. I quit after trying 2 computers, 2 headsets, and a blutooth speaker after 30 minutes in.
Troubleshooting in the middle of a game, again a self proclaimed professional DM.
This is on top of trying to figure out 5e. Do I take feats or abilities?
This used to be fun, now I mostly hate the game and technically the only play I've had is to say " I didn't understand anything you said just"
Anyone want to play keep on the borderlands on zoom with me?
What do you mean "feats or abilities"
Feats in DND5e, think of them like Perks.
When you level up in your class, you eventually get the Ability Score Improvement feature, and the optional Feats rule allows you to take a Feat instead of just that Ability Score Improvement (or ASI).
Abilities, that means a lot, but also Ability Scores.
Ty. Missed the point.
That's more than the professional DM told me.
ah, I think they meant a feat or an ability score improvement.

Is there a way to join a game and watch others play? Trying to get a feel for this.
Have built a character and played a 2 hour intro game
You can watch live play shows such as Critical Role
Generally speak though, people don't often allow 'spectators'
But what's on Critical role is different from a normal table.
All tables are different, and all live play shows are too. I did say 'such as' because there are so many out there, but Critical Role being one of the biggest, it's likely the one that someone new to live play shows is first time come across
Is it possible to play with just 2 people? Me and my little cousin just like making stories and giving each other decisions
I don’t really know how to play yet though
Yes. That is exactly what the Essentials Kit is for.
What’s that?
It's a starter box from a couple of years ago.
It's on DDB here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/doip
What it added was sidekicks. So you can add helpers for a single player and still play the game with a "party".
hi
Not particularly different. The setup may be, but the play isn't
I have made it to lvl 5 with a character once am I still under the newcomer banner?
i am a new player looking for a group to play with

To add on to what Sidekicks are - They're a tool for a DM to insert into the game as mini-characters. Perhaps an optimistic guard joins your solo character as a Warrior sidekick. They're a side character, not as powerful as a Player Character, but definitely considerable. Much more simple too.
How does vision and movement work with familiars if I dont have LoS? If combat starts and my familiar is another room, can I see what my familiar sees in that other room, or can I only do that if I am seeing through them as a warlock? Would I be able to move my Imp on his turn if I cant see him?
I figured that I shouldnt be able to do anything as him, if my warlock cant see him
you need to do the Find Familiar 'sense through their senses' thing.
your Imp has a mind of their own, you don't need to micromanage - but you can telepathically communicate up to 100 feet away with them
so I can still move him to squares, but I just wouldnt have vision until he is in my LoS?
Yes...if he's within 20 squares of you (usually, as 5ft/sq is often the default)....and he can simply communicate what he sees...unless your DM disagrees (might be something to discuss with your DM before starting)
We actually have #dnd-rules for such questions. This channel is more for basic level stuff
How to join campaign in dnd beyond?
You need to have a guide in charge of a campaign to send you a join link.
So I'm interested in dming and realized that it would probably be hard to start dming by making my own setting so I wanted to know if Descent into Avernus is good or bad for a first dming experience?
I would suggest Lost Mines of Phandelver ( which will be free on the site soon. Maybe this week?) Or Dragon of Icespire Peak. They are the adventures from the Starter and Essentials sets
Yeah, as much as I love DiA, I do think it’s not too close to top of my list of “beginner DM friendly” modules.
i have heard those are good starting campaigns
(also for context i have played before)
i didnt know lost mines would be free
is that because of the site merging with wizards of the cost?
It’s mostly because a new starter kit is on the way
Maybe? It was mentioned in the last Dev Update. I'm out so can't watch it to check
Acquisitions Incorporated is gonna be free for a week because of the acquisition.
But Phandelver, I believe, is mostly because a new starter set is coming out soon.
heh
Ye
what is Acquisitions Incorporated?
It's one of the many books in 5E. This one is based off of a popular D&D campaign called Acquisitions Incorporated, which is kinda designed to be like a silly workplace comedy.
wait
Not "standard D&D", so I wouldn't start with it. It's mostly just a guide on how to deviate from the standard games.
is that the one abd illustrates did?
ah nvm
i got it confused with something else
whats up
Hi. I have never played DnD. I have watched a lot of strems and guides.
But I never had access to it. My dream character is an artificer warforged(i know it's hard for a DM to agree to it though).
Haha mine is a Hill Dwarf Named DeGroot
hey im compleatly new as well! My charcter is a dragonborn druid
Hello everyone! im super new with this. still reading some stuffs about DND. was inspired by watching Sheldon and the guys from bigbang.
Welcome! I’ve never seen the show. Hope you enjoy learning about the hobby!
Nice! You can be a Genasi Druid Dragon Born! Mach you elemental powers with the kind of dragon breath you have!!! 😱
How do I start playing?
- Read through the rules to get a feel for the game mechanics
- Build a character to see how the rules work with characters
- Find a group to play D&D with
- Keep learning and having fun
First, give up all your worldly possessions and spend all oney on books and dice. Lol.jk jk
But really it can get expensive if you don't have buddies to share the load with, if playing irl. Id recommend trying a few virtual games first, and NEVER expect it to be like Critical Role. Matt Mercer is a god among us, but he is not the standard
Let's keep things basic and focused on the fundamentals. Not every newcomer even knows what Critical Role is
Fair enough. My bad
Lol
im looking for a online character build sheet where you dont have to pay to unlock classes and race
ahh okay makes sense
However, you can use the D&D Beyond character builder with the free content found in the basic rules, plus you can use the homebrew tools to enter your own content
I mean, thats like asking for a video game where you don't have to pay for it. They exist, its just not exactly...legal
You can also buy just the race and subclass you need, rather than the whole book.
Whatever you spend gets credited toward the remaining cost of the book itself, too.
If your character is joined to a campaign on D&D Beyond and someone in the group has a Master Subscription, they can share their purchased content with the group.
im just feeling things out exploring mechanics of character builds
You can do that well enough using the free options
I just notcied when choosing warlock you can only choose from one patron and was just wondering if there where other sites that gave more options
None that are legit, no. The only publicly available options are the ones in the Basic Rules. Everything else requires a purchase.
Each class has 1 subclass the is available for free in the basic rules
Except for Artificer which requires at least one of the subclasses from Tasha's to be owned
thanks guys, Ive only ever played a few times and someone elses spare characters.. so I was just looking around
Welcome!
I have a small experience of 2 sessions only and I'm currently developing a new Half Elf Monk character
Only stuff that are missing are a Voice and backstory
Hey y'all, just joined and found a campaign. But when I check my characters inventory and try to get starting equipment it says I don't have access?
Do I have to wait for my DM to give me my equipment or??
ok uh question
so I found a bunch of spells that I like
they're all different levels
when I downloaded the pdf, it already had a bunch of level 1 spells there
can I just edit the spells I like into it
because it only has level 1 spells and I have no idea if I can just mix and match
because it says level 1
Your character's level will determine what level spell slots you have available, and what level of spells you can know. It's all in the class description.
Each class prepares (if they prepare spells) spells according to the class description.
Don’t have access to… what? Can you share a screenshot?
I think I figured it out. Ty tho
Crow, more detail please?
What are some of those spell names?
And spells detail what classes they are for, as well.
You can only prep spells up to the level of spell slot you have.
If you have 3rd level spell slots you can prepare spells up to, but not more than, 3rd level.
Your class levels determine what spell slots you have, as well as how many spells you can know or prepare.
If you are level one you will most likely only have 1st level spells slots, if any.
Each class' description will explain what spell slots you have available at each level, and what spells you can prepare. Not all classes learn spells the same way. Have you read the Basic Rules(available for free on D&D Beyond)?
pdf of what, a wizard character sheet? They'd have a lot yeah
ok thank you
druid
and why did they already have a bunch of the spells in there I didn't pick them out
Druids prepare their spells from the entire druid spell list. The spells that are there the ones you can choose, not the ones you have chosen.
some druids get an expanded spell list that will add a bunch of spells automatically to your list of prepared spells
Can you send a link to the character? That might get you a more specific answer.
Without knowing what choices you made and what spells you’re seeing, it’s hard to say.
Some spellcasting classes only learn specific spells from their class' list, usually picking one or two new ones each time they level up, and those are the only spells they know. Other spellcasters like Clerics, Druids and Paladins, get access to their class' full spell list, and "prepare" a certain number of spells per day. Cleric Domains, Paladin Oaths and some Druid Circles also grant you a handful of spells that you always have prepared every day in addition to the ones you choose. If the PDF contains the full class list, it's so you have them all handy to pick from when your character finishes a Long Rest. A lot of the time, you'll have some spells that you prepare every day(for example, Cure Wounds and/or Healing Word are good ones to have ready every day), and then maybe others that you'll only prepare if you think you'll need them. It can be a lot to keep track of, but it also means you can try spells out and if you don't like them, swap them for others the next day.
cool
Hi
Hello all!
Hey, I'm like completely new to this game, I have no idea how to play or anything like that. How do I find like a group or something to play with, so I can learn the game.
Check the pinned messages here in the channel - some good resources to learn how to play.
But basically read through the free basic rules and get a feel for the game mechanics, watch some folks play the game (YouTube/Twitch streams) understanding that many of these are oriented more towards entertainment rather than teaching the game, then create a character and see how the rules interact with a character, then find a group to play with.
As to finding those groups...

If they are allowing spectators they will say, the communities are also good for that. Most groups do not want spectators though.

You're welcome to watch mine if you want to see all the power of FoundryVTT.
Thanks, will keep an eye out for that.
What are optional class features?
They were introduced in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, and expand your class features in one of two ways.
Some of them are additional features, where you just get a new ability.
And the others are replacements, where you have to give up one of your base features instead.
You gain class features in the Player’s Handbook when you reach certain levels in your class. This section offers additional features that you can gain as a cleric. Unlike the features in the Player’s Handbook, you don’t gain the features here automatically. Consulting with your DM, you decide whether to gain a feature in this section if you meet the level requirement noted in the feature’s description. These features can be selected separately from one another; you can use some, all, or none of them.
If you take a feature that replaces another feature, you gain no benefit from the replaced one and don’t qualify for anything in the game that requires it.
So Clerics, for example, can take the Additional Cleric Spells optional class feature. This expands their spell list by giving them access to eight more spells they wouldn't normally get.
But if they take the Blessed Strikes optional class feature, they have to give up Divine Strike or Potent Spellcasting.
Blessed Strikes
8th-level cleric feature, which replaces the Divine Strike or Potent Spellcasting feature
The pinned messages are a great source for information, and be sure to ask any questions you may have.
Welcome!
lol
Is there a specific part that has you confused?
It's definitely a lot to take in!
Yeah I noticed
The only thing that really confuses me is like the character stuff I guess
But I am on a phone so maybe when I’m home I’ll get a better look
When you go to create a character, there's an option there to Show Help Text. If you click that box, it will walk you through the steps.

Generally speaking, it follows the first few chapters of the Basic Rules in order.

But yeah, if you have any specific questions we're happy to answer them any time.
the backbone of the ranger class
basically in Tasha's, they introduced a bunch of new features into the game which make things 'easier' (like being able to swap out cantrips and fighting styles... or more spells to choose from!), or allow you to swap one ability in a class for another (most notably rangers get a lot of those)
Hi :,) I'm kind of new to dnd and I wanna start a clean slate of a campaign and I would love so tips on what's best to do.
This is a proper discussion for#character-discussion
Hi, I'm new to dnd, I've just gotten into it recently.
Welcome 🙂 I’m new too
How can I start?
We have some links pinned in this channel that cover getting started
If I ask a question about certain classes would that be against the channel topic?
Generally this channel is for the fundamentals, but don't worry. If your question is better suited to another channel, you'll just get directed there
Ok then how good of a class is the Paladin?
I would like to pick something that isn't awful for my first class
All the classes are equally 'good'
They're just all different
Best thing to do would be to pick the class that seems the most interesting and fun sounding to you
it's pretty good. While it has access to some spells, you have the option to spend your spell slots on Divine Smite - trading it out for direct damage, no risk, as it happens when you hit something in melee with a weapon.
You would also become a supportive bastion, probably.
Right well I'm curious about a spell Animate Object I had an idea about about how maybe you can make something akin to construct using them like specifically making a pen with wings and animating them? I think it would be fun but I suppose it needs research to do
that spell is a very temporary effect, remember
That would fall under #character-discussion if you want to delve into that concept
What is the use for Other Modifier
and
Override Score
They're for applying temporary or homebrew modifiers to your ability scores. If you're just getting started experimenting with making a character, you don't need to worry about them
oh so i can just skip it?
Not ability scores in general, just those fields
For future reference, though, Other Modifier adds the number you enter to your score. Override Score sets it directly to the number you enter.
as a necromancer i am allowed to use spells like illusion and other stuff right?
Yep, the wizard subclasses don't restrict what schools of magic you can use
They just generally make the spells of your school a bit better
oh ok, also what to put on faith? i really dont know what to put
That will depend on your setting, but it's the deity or deities your character worships
Those will vary from setting to setting, so if you're just making a practice character you're best off leaving it blank
You can also choose not to worship a god and leave it blank.
I think the only setting where it has a mechanical impact would be Theros?
Ok, also. On hair we also put what type of hair and hair color?
Yup. Physical appearance is generally up to you, so long as it’s setting appropriate (talk with your DM about what that means in their world.)
Done i have finished my character
I'm not sure if this is the right channel for this question but what's the difference between a sorcerer and a wizard?
Sorcerer has an origin like Wild Magic, Draconic Bloodline, Aberrant Mind, Divine Soul - more of an innate magic tied to your very being, alongside your Sorcery Points, allowing you to use metamagic and alter your spells in minor but potent ways. Sorcerers use Charisma for their spells.
A Wizard is based on intelligence, a studied caster who adds spells to their spellbook and prepares them each day, able to simply not prepare Burning Hands if they're going to fire land full of the monsters made out of fire, for example. Most of their subclasses revolve around being super good at a specific school of magic, and recently have diverged - some for War Magic (neat little one), Bladesinging (battle wizard with a weapon encouraged), Scribes (wizard+, super spellbook, re-download your spells from your Awakened Spellbook even if it gets destroyed!).
Interesting. Thank you!
When people play D&D they do it on voice chat right?
They’ll do it over VC, in person, and even through text (play by post).
It can vary from group to group, but yes. Most online D&D groups use voice chat, some use video chat like Zoom or Skype, a few use text only
Well that's unfortunate but thank you
My group uses Zoom, but we have corporate accounts from our employer
We play in person.
Are you saying the company you work at happens to run D&D games?
My group's core were 4 people who all worked for the same company, and we were told we could use our corporate zoom accounts for personal things, so dnd over Zoom happened
We do have a dnd channel on our internal work message board
That’s really cool.
One of my players also messages me on Teams while we are working while she is bored
I used to ask one of my old coworkers about her games on the job, while we were doing tasks that don’t require much attention.
What?
Someone messaged earlier, and it didn’t make sense so I responded with what? They then removed their message.
Was gonna tell a story, but tl;dr my friend invited me to play D&D, we played one session, 5 months go by we play another, then we haven’t played since. He has a busy schedule. :(
We did manage to complete a small dungeon within those two sessions though, so that’s cool.
If you wanna share D&D table stories, we actually have a channel for that #tales-from-the-table
This channel is more about helping getting newcomers to the game kick-started
We also have #dnd-discussion for general D&D chitter chatter
Ah, I see. Makes sense.
"chitter chatter" lmao
At its simplest: wizards study magic, and sorcerers are magic.
I'm about to run my first game and was planning on running Dragon of Icespire Peak but with the give away of Lost Mine of Phandelver I thought I'd see what you all thought would make an easier and/or more fun first adventure?
Structure-wise, they're pretty similar. And they both take place in the same town, actually: Phandalin.
You can even mash them together
I've done just that, in fact. ☝️😆
It’s actually a good idea to flesh out DoIP phadalin with infos from Lost mine imo
Lost Mine seems like it has more 'story' and a better hook (or any hook) but I'm more prepped for DoIP plus at least one player is playing Lost Mine in another campaign. Thanks! I'll read through it and maybe pick some bits out of Lost Mine.
The structure of DoIP is such that you could for sure lift parts
there's a few really good resources out there from DMs who have mashed them up together to different degrees! I would start with a search for that and see exactly what others have done
Definitely something worth asking about in #adventures-spoilers-archive
Ok i need a question, how does the site work exactly?
It's a combination of two things
- digital tools that automate aspects of the games such as making a character, tracking their information, running combat encounters etc
- official digital versions of all official D&D fifth edition publications, including offline access via the app
oh ok, but one thing how can i start to play D&D?
We have four channels to help you find your next game:

oh ok
also, it sais Character Not Ready!
The current character is not accessible because it is missing either a Race, Class or Ability Scores.
Return to the character builder to complete the character crea
if i press the blue button will it take me to the problem or.?
It will take you back to the character builder where you will need to complete all the relevant missing bits of information
If you're unsure what you're missing, I suggest you check out the chapter in the basic rules on making a character step by step
D&D Beyond does have a mobile app, but for game sessions you'll likely want a larger screen to view game maps and such
I've been in online groups where some people were connected only via their phone, and it really slowed things down.
Not that games require maps, necessarily, but they are a common practice.
I've done online, over the phone with text sessions and theater of mind. Mainly using Discord with DndBeyond integration through Avrae or third party apps.
Dnd over phone is possible but as others said, it depends a bit on the tools that are being used
Is the app on google play or..?
The DnDBryond app I believe is on both the Apple Store and Google Play.
Beyond or breyond? I almost messed it up
Beyond
Just be aware, if you have it download all the sourcebooks you have access to, it could end up taking a lot of space on your phone
I think i would have to download mispace or something to put a lot of space right?
I'm new anybody have a group I can join

Hello. Im new and trying to see if i can start?
Check the pinned messages for some useful links to help get you started.
Hello, I'm a new dm and I was wondering how do I add monsters to the combat on my campagin?
In the encounters page: https://www.dndbeyond.com/my-encounters
Oh, okay. I thought I could run it within vtt
There isn't a VTT officially integrated with dndbeyond
There are third-party browser add-ons /browser extensions, but they're not official so you're better off asking on the discord/etc of the extension you're using
I personally get tokens out of avrae !token orc or what-have-you and then put that token into https://owlbear.rodeo/ and run the encounter (initiative, hit points, etc) on dndbeyond
☝🏻 You can try that !token orc over in #ddb-avrae-commands.
Hi everyone, I am a new to the channel as well as new to DnD as a whole 😄
Welcome!
Hi everyone im new to DnD cant wait to play with you guys
what does the right of mind shielding do?
"you are immune to magic that allows other creatures to read your thoughts, determine whether you are lying, know your alignment, or know your creature type. Creatures can telepathically communicate with you only if you allow it." plus housing a soul.
The Ring of Mind Shielding does what it says it does. It's BR (basic rules), so it's free to view for anyone.
hello everyone
hey do the new dnd books come with comes to redeem on dnd beyond?
Nope
If you've got the physical book, you can use the homebrew tools to recreate that content for free. (For private use. Please don't publish it!)
Or you can buy just the parts you need, like a single subclass. Whatever you spend gets credited toward the cost of the book itself, too.
Haihaiii! my name is Daan, i am not that-new to DnD but still new enough to warrant its own message 😄 i live in the eastern part of the Netherlands and i am looking to set up a group of my own. Any tips/tricks/ideas/suggestions?
Hello! I've been here in the server for a while now and I'd want to experience what the game is like. Is this the recommended place to join campaigns for someone who absolutely knows nothing about how things work besides the absolute basics?
Hello to you both.
In terms of looking for games, check out the looking for channels, which I will tag below :)

oh! if i want to ask for some feedback in regards to some homebrew im makeing where would i post that?
Welcome! You’ll need to stop by #880965682462875679 to get the Homebrew role first, then you can use #homebrew.
Oh fantastic~! thank you ever so kindly!
Hi everybody! I’m Neil and have been interested in D&D since I was a kid (~30 years ago) but never played. My partner and I are about to try out a D&D Duet adventure together with me DM’ing. Any pointers or tips from anyone who has done this style of play would be appreciated! We are just looking to get our feet wet and possibly introduce some friends to D&D at a later time.
Welcome! There's an article here with some good advice:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/778-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-one-on-one
Thank you! I actually purchased First Blush earlier this week so seeing that one mentioned as a good starting point in the article makes me feel a bit better about giving it a go!
is there any other way i can find people to play DnD?
there are the #looking-for channels here, there is a section of the ddb forum, there may be people looking for groups through your local gaming/hobby/comicbook store, I believe roll20 is an easy place to find games
And then the old favorite, round up some friends and introduce them to the game
is it possible to have a dragon mount?
They aren't typically "for sale", but if your DM works it into the story, sure. There's also the Drakewarden subclass for Ranger in Tasha's Cauldron Of Everything. They get a drake companion that starts at size Small, and grows as you level up. It eventually becomes size Large. At size Medium you can use it as a mount but it can't fly with you on it. When it reaches size Large, you can use it as a flying mount. EDIT: My bad, the Drakewarden is in Fizban's, not Tasha's
FTD added rules for summoninng a dragonell
ox thx
Hi?
Hello
Hi, I'm new to DnD, but I did make a character for DnD, is it fine if I post it here?
Honestly, I'm new too. I was about to ask how I would go about making my character properly.
go to DnDbeyond.com
oh wait, lol, I didn't read it right.
I have, but they don't have any race that has Amazon's as a race
oh.
I went Teifling for Necromancer.
Lol, I was talking with my friend about a Bard/Necromancer
Cool
The character was going to eventually try to be a cult leader
Please do!
Thank you.
ddb.ac/characters/74275918/N2mRY2
My mom said with my skills, I could be a Thief.
There is no official Amazon race, but there’s a few that could fit the same role, like a Goliath.
Amazons are technically humans, are they not? not 100% on the DC lore
so that could be a racial option as well
I believe so, yes. Wonder Woman is the exception.
Yeah, Diana's an aasimar in DnD terms
My necromancer's name is Obi.
Looks pretty good! A couple notes, though:
Ok! Thank you @smoky adder and @ornate kiln!
I’d start by switching the DEX and INT scores. Wizards want the highest INT they can get.
ok
It looks like you missed your proficiency selections for your class as well.
Good evening I'm kinda new to dnd but that's cause I have nobody to play with and I don't exactly know how this discord and stuff works so if anyone could help me out a bit I'd appreciate it
And I think you can either prep or learn a few more 1st-level spells. You learn 6 of those to start.
Thank you spamandtune. (Is it fine if I call you Tuna?)
Tuna is fine. 😅
Thank you.

I'm rerolling my stats, I got a 9. What should I put that in? I'm really new. All I know is that roll dice, get good numbers and pass check.
If you're making a Wizard? My instinct would be to put your lowest score in Strength. You aren't going to be swinging any heavy weapons, and you won't be wearing armor to weigh you down.
Honestly, until you’ve found a DM, I wouldn’t worry about the numbers too much.
Okay.
True, your DM may have a specific way they want players to roll for stats. If you're just creating a character for practice, stick with point-buy or the standard array
A lot of DMs have their own specific requirements for how to calculate your ability scores, so until you know what those are, it’s generally safest just to go with Standard Array or Point Buy.
Jinx! 🙂
Should Consituion be my second highest?
The Quick Build advice for wizards says this:
First, Intelligence should be your highest ability score, followed by Constitution or Dexterity.
(Not that you have to follow it, but it is generally good advice.)
Wizards have a small hit die and no armor proficiency, so DEX and CON will keep you safe!
…ish. 😂
Dex will make you harder to hit, Con will let you take more hits before falling down. You can never have too much of either.
My changed Necromancer
ddb.ac/characters/74275918/jzUGc5
If it was me, I'd probably swap the Dex and Con. Later I would take the Resilient(Con) feat to even out the score and get proficiency in Con saves(which is what you roll to maintain concentration on spells when you get hit). I think the extra point of AC is more likely to help in the early levels.
You’ve got a lot of utility spells there. Not necessarily a bad thing, but it might leave you struggling in combat.
true.
And you might want to go over your starting equipment, too. There should be at least one weapon in there.
I just added a dagger.
I think wizards can pick between a quarterstaff and a dagger, IIRC.
STAB THY ENIMES AND TURN INTO ALLIES!

Any specific questions? Or just questioning what's happening?

for the #750812887697588356 channel, that's to say whether or not you're open for paid games or discord servers as a whole (like Westmarches - a bunch of players and DMs, assort a group for a short adventure, 'living world' style)
uh anyone know what the orary of the wanderer does

Afternoon. I'm well thanks. Walking about my city thinking & planning my next session
Well... I'm whole new in D&D Beyond, actually I've never played D&D in my life but I saw it on Internet and watched Videos and I found it interesting and fun, so I joined
In which case, welcome to the community. Feel free to ask any questions you might have :)
so... with what I need to begin if I wanna try D&D?
like... do I need character?
or what?
You will need a character of you want to play. You can find some helpful links including to the free Basic Rules in the pinned messages of this channel
first you need to get an idea of the rules, then I would search for a group. Character creation ususally comes afterwards, though you can practise before of course
is there a place where I can get a good idea of how DnD works. Im very new
so... I need make my character yes?
start with the basic rules https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
see also the post pinned on this channel
ok... i built an character but... I don't think is done... somethings needs to done but which part idk
do i need to say something about character that I built?
have you read the basic rules on character building?
if you want help with a specific character, you can share them in #character-discussion
The next step is finding a group to play with, really
so can i tell what abomination i built?
#character-discussion is the best place to share it
ok
I need a little help
what's the difference of a cantrip and a spell slot?
you have limited amout of spells to cast 1 per slot but you can cast any amount of cantrips for example a cure wounds spell will depend if you have any spell slots and at what lvl but spare the dying cantrip you can use as many times as you have actions @sage willow
Cantrips are kind of like "level 0 spells". They don't require a spell slot to cast, because of that there's no limit on how many times you can cast them. Spell slots are kind of like a form of currency. Casting a spell of Level "X" requires you to spend a spell slot of at least level "X". You can spend a spell slot of a level higher than X if you want or if that's all you have left. Some spells will specify additional effects that happen when you cast it with a higher-level spell slot than what's needed. For example, casting Fireball with a spell slot higher than level 3 will do more damage. Casting Hold Person with a spell slot higher than level 2 will let you target more than one creature. Cantrips that do damage tend to scale up as well, but they scale based on your overall character level. Firebolt for example will do 1d10 damage if your character is Level 1 through 4. When you reach Level 5, Firebolt will do 2d10 damage.
Umm i wannted to ask, we can play DnD on the site right?
DnDBeyond provides tools for playing D&D yes. But here on the server? While you can (they have game rooms) it may be better to set up your own Discord server to have D&D games on.
Or play with a group local to you at an actual physical location.
no no i said if its possible to play on the site
Like the website? I mean DnDBeyond provides tools for playing - eg. digital character sheets with dice rolling, access to D&D rules in digital format, shared campaigns, tools for Dungeon Master's to run encounters. So in that way yeah you can play on the site but the site itself will not hook you up to a group to play with by itself. You can use the #looking-for channels here on this Discord server to find a group or you can use the website forums to find a group.
Or round up some friends and introduce them to the game!
If you need a Virtual Tabletop (VTT) then https://owlbear.rodeo is the simplest one for just maps and tokens. Others cost more but do more for you. Mainly, you need a way to communicate with the other players/DM. That's often face-to-face, but can also easily be video chats, audio chats, or even forum posts / discord text chats.
yeah the problem is i want first to like be good at DnD plus i would need to buy the game and i dont have money for it yet
You can play with just the Basic Rules
What would "good at D&D" even mean?
Go in on the Starter Kit or Essentials Kit together, perhaps. That includes a good adventure for new players/new DMs as well as the Basic Rules in printed form.
As for being "good at DnD," that only comes with practice. The only way to win is to have fun playing.
First of all, if you and your players are having fun, you’re good at D&D
Good at D&D = having fun with friends
Its all about enjoying the game.
Reg beat me to it! But yes, games are supposed to be fun.
It’s not a video game where people monitor each other’s stats or anything. If you’re having fun, you’re good at D&D.
yeah, ou guys are right.
You don't necessarily need to be "Good" as a newbie. Sometimes being good is experimenting and asking questions! There's lots of advice videos and such onlline for learning how to play certain classes and explain some things about how to learn mechanics of races, the game, etc
And feel free to ask any specific questions - most of us are pretty friendly and willing to share what we know and how we have fun with this game
A good imagination helps a lot. And having a articulate Dm,Gm .
Yep - and a willingness to engage and work together to ensure everyone can have fun.
Imagination i have that a lot, that is why i put it on making novels
I got into playing DnD back in the early 80s when I was just a kid. But found it hard to find people interested or that have the imagination to play. Some people just can't get into it to make it enjoyable.
Then you'll go far! Just, have fun, find some groups and try to flesh out your characters! Most times, DMs build worlds off of players, so don't be afraid to talk to your GM about stuff when it comes to your character.
Just, be sure to avoid some problematic behavior at the table. Sometimes from yourself or from others! If it does happen, don't be afraid to step away. Bad DND is worse than No DnD
Yeah, problem is that i am in romania so they gonna make me talk in romania wich i am slowly forgeting i think
I may be wrong but cant you set your server to english only.?
yes, but i am talking if i am going to buy an actual DnD in servers i can set only to english but in real life if i try to get my freinds or family to join they will say that i should say it in romanian
I can see how that would be a problem, when I was in the Army and stationed in Germany I wouldn't of been able to play with the little German I knew.
And computers were fairly new back in the mid 80's...lol
Bu question if someone was lets say 15 or in school would they be abel to stay in the server and play DnD?
As long as you meet Discord's terms of service you should be fine - also don't share personal information like your age on this server.
Younger players may have a more challenging time joining games because of topics the games may cover. For example a gritty dark adventure full of adult themes is probably not the spot for younger players! But that said, a typical D&D game session lasting 3-4 hours with typical role play elements like meeting NPCs and doing quests with maybe a couple of combat encounters, that's something I think most groups can handle regardless of age.
hi
@echo kelp thanks for the infow
How do you defeat a beholder
very carefully
Earthbind.
I was gonna say: like any other monster, beat it to death. But I guess your advice is a bit more useful
hey every ne newbie here no idea what im really ding
Welcome! There’s some helpful links in the pinned messages here, but if you have any specific questions, feel free to ask.
didnt read the rules yet, but could someone try to explain me the fundamentals of the game tomorrow or so
There used to be a great primer for new players on dndbeyond, but they deleted it. Instead, give the basic rules a shot
ok and would someone maybe play a short test campaign or something like that, when I read the rules. Just to get a little bit of experience
You want to find a group to do that! Many groups are explicitly welcoming to new players, or if they don’t say so up front you can ask the DM.
You can also round up some friends who aren’t super familiar and go through the Starter Kit or Essentials Kit campaign with them. Someone will have to be DM, but both adventures are set up to be good for new DMs as well as new players
and where would we find the starter kit or essential kit campaign
btw, thx for the help
Ya you betcha. Right now, you can get the starter kit adventure for free on DDB, at the link Arenlor provided. The other one uses the adventure Dragon of Icespire Peak. If they were the same price, I’d recommend DoIP. They’re both good, though, so why spend money you don’t have to?
A D&D game works best with 5-6 people.
A party of 3-5 plus a DM, really. Most of it is designed with a 4-player party in mind. More than 5 players gets unruly. You could play with as few as one player and one dm, but you’d need to make adjustments.
ok, thx. so 3 player and one dm would work. Could 2 players and one dm work as well without adjustments
It could! I played in a 2-players-plus-DM game for like a decade. You’re better off with 3 players if you can swing it, but yeah 2 can totally work.
Hello I am New what should i do?
There are some good first steps pinned in this very channel!
I'm sure it's been mentioned but DNDB is giving away 2 books. Don't forget to add them! Acquisitions incorporated and lost mines of phandelver
Great!
I am new-ish to D&D I participated in a homebrew campaign with my first true character, but I am hoping to get into something else with the knowledge I have accrued via playing. I ask questions alot, and tend to try and see how far I can take things. For some this is welcome, though to others its tasking. I will try to stick true to the campaigns I join, if that becomes possible 🙂
What purchases for dndbeyond are basically essential for starting my first campaign
Hi, I'm very new here to dnd, and I am wondering how I could get into a game with a group of people?
I'm not sure this is a game for me, so I would like to find out. I made my first character, and am looking for a dm basically, and a team of course (: I have like 2 hours now (hehe), and Thursday evenings, and on the weekend every now and then. Any tips to join a group of new players (or other players willing to play with a beginner) would be appreciated. Thank you for your reply, TheDutchPurrito
you should check out the looking for channels. you can look for a DM (follow the pinned message template) or respond to a looking for player post (follow whatever directions they have set for contacting them)

The channels in the post above are where you can look for games. To join a campaign, you probably want to at least read the Basic rules, which are linked in the pinned messages of this channel, and have a few character ideas
With those they get play over a vc correct I play I'm just new to digital play
Each game there should have a “Way We Play” section that says what they use — vc or otherwise.
Hello Im new to this so what do I do
Start by reading the info channels and pinned posts.
And if you have questions, ask away!
hi! i have a question? Id like to dm a DnD game but i have no idea where to start
You get Lost Mines of Phandelver for free with a dndbeyond account, that's a good first campaign to run
Find some people to play with, have them create characters, and pick a time to play
hey, could I get recommendations on where to play D&D online, like specifically for new players?
Not rn tho
just to know any good places
I would like to be in a DnD game but I don't know how to do it online
im brand new to the game. I have watched a couple streams and looks super fun. Id love to play but I dont get on till about 11pm EST any DM's around during that time?
Check out the links in the pinned messages for how to play online and how to play in general!
Question what is DEXTERITY
and
CONSTITUTION ?
Dexterity is agility. Dodge a fireball? pickpocket? AC based on evading attacks? sneaking? all based on Dexterity.
Constitution is how tough you are, if you're more resilient against poisonous puffs or bitter cold, it gives you more HP, etc.
Wisdom is, well, wisdom. Mostly apt for resisting frightens, charms, and used for perception, insight. Clerics and Druids use Wisdom.
Charisma is an odd one, esoteric. It deals with the social skills, and also deals with saving throws against teleportation, banishment, possession, and other strange things.
ok
Strength is being able to crush a tomato.
Dexterity is being able to dodge a tomato.
Constitution is being able to eat a bad tomato.
Intelligence is knowing a tomato is a fruit.
Wisdom is knowing not to put a tomato in a fruit salad.
Charisma is being able to sell a tomato fruitsalad for kids.
can someone explain how arcane recovery works
I think this is more of a #dnd-rules question.
What’s your current wizard level?
You can use arcane recovery once per day at the end of a short rest.
It allows you to regain spell slots up to half your wizard level(rounded up). For example you are a 5th level wizard. You can recover up to 3 spell slot levels. That can be a 3rd level slot or 3 first level slots or a second and a first level slot
can anyone explain to me how 5e players scale up in power?
in a lot of ways. hold on.
3.5e and pathfinder have weapon enchantments. starfinder just gives more dice for higher level equipment
hitpoints, proficiency bonus, spell slots, spells known, spell levels, amount of attacks etc all increase with level
you can also increase your stats every 4ish levels
so its more indirect
you also get magic items ususally
yeah but a weapon goes up to a +3?
+3 is the highest usually, yes
doesn't seem like a lot
5e has a system called bounded accuracy
it means that the hit chance and DCs dont scale a lot between level 1-20. neither do the numbers for monsters.
its not a term used in the rules
i remember my first game of dnd. lost mines of phandelver. our entire party just rolled against goblins but we had no idea about adding modifiers to attacks and proficiency too
that was a tough fight
a level 1 character ususally has +5 to hit, a level 20 character without magic items would have ususally +11.
a CR 1 monster might have +4 to hit, meanwhile a CR30 (highest in the game), has +19. its not a massive difference like in pathfinder
still seems like a lot
compared to other systems, it really isnt. I think +40 or so is pretty normal in pathfinder for higher levels
what level are they?
i think level 5 is decent time for +1 items and items of comparable power
unfortunately, the rarity of items doesn't always translate to relative power. you can try to use your best judgment with items based on their description or see if there is some discussion online

I really want to get myself involved in a campaign that lasts longer than 2 sessions
I want to experience D&D
dont give up. there are plenty of longterm successful campaigns
Yeah, I'm hoping to find or be invited to one
Don't know how difficult it is to join a campaign, I already put up my thing in the looking-for-dm channel
It can be tough. I recommend looking in more than one place - dndbeyond forums, your local comic/hobby shop, r/lfg, roll20 probably all have more than what’s just in this discord
Hey, when creating a character, could I pick any existing class, or just the main 5?
Like can I make a Swordmage character in most games or not?
It really depends on what your DM will allow. Most games I’ve been haven’t had limitations based on class, but I can’t speak for every DM.
As for playing a “swordmage”, there are definitely a few subclasses in the game that fulfill that spellcasting swordsman fantasy.
hi, me and some of my friends are going to be trying D&D for the first time we kind of know what to do but I'm the dm and could use some advice to get started with, anyone got any? (it would be much appreciated)
There are 12 "main" classes that have been in 5th Edition from the start. The 13th, Artificer was added in the Eberron sourcebook, and later "mainstreamed" in Tasha's Cauldron Of Everything. The rules don't prevent you from picking any of those classes, but your DM might have their own restrictions based on the world they've created or other reasons. I had a DM who didn't allow Artificers because he thought they were overpowered, for example.
If you're talking about a Swordmage as a character concept, there are a few subclasses that can help you create a character that wields both weapons and magic. The Eldritch Knight for Fighters, the Hexblade for Warlocks, pretty much any Paladin, or even a Ranger depending on the flavor of character you want. If you're referring to "Swordmage" as the actual name of a class, there isn't one in the official 5E sourcebooks. Someone may have created their own homebrew class with that name, but that would be unofficial material and you'd definitely need to check with your DM.
Bladesinger wizard makes for a pretty good “swordmage” as well
Dont forget the Battlesmith artificer, also Undead, Genie and Fiend also make decent bladelocks, Hexblade is is just so strong that they get overshadowed
all are good swordmages
Is there a way to build a character that uses a double of themselves? Like a mimic or something.
That’s essentially what at Echo Knight is.
A mysterious and feared frontline warrior of the Kryn Dynasty, the Echo Knight has mastered the art of using dunamis to summon the fading shades of unrealized timelines to aid them in battle. Surrounded by echoes of their own might, they charge into the fray as a cycling swarm of shadows and strikes.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/egtw/character-options-subclasses#EchoKnight
Oh, thank you
is it a good idea to like, make characters before you join any games, like making a bunch of characters and picking one for a game?
Having options never hurts! Just keep your ideas flexible for any specific requirements the DM might have.
Personally, I like to find out the theme of the campaign first, then build my character around that.
thx
Hey guys, new to the Server. Only got into D&D about 2-years ago but I love TTRPGs now and D&DBeyond is incredible. 😄
New guy here. Not sure if this is allowed but a friend and I are looking for a DM. Someone to run a campaign for a duo. 5e. We have characters if needed.

Hey, last question, but are there any that excel in Dexterity?
Rangers are usually Dex-based, Paladins Str-based, but it's not required. Eldritch Knights can go either way. Hexblade Warlocks use Charisma for their weapon attacks, the same as they use for spellcasting. When you read through the abilities for a class or subclass, just keep an eye out for wording that says if the ability only applies to a particular type of attack(like melee or ranged), or if it only applies when using a particular ability score when attacking. For example, two of the core offensive abilities of a Barbarian only apply to Strength-based melee weapon attacks. You can make a Barbarian that uses Dex, but they'll lose out on the damage bonus from Raging, and can't use Reckless Attack. If an ability doesn't impose a restriction to specific types of attacks, then there isn't one.
I'm probs gonna go w/Eldritch Knights then. Thx
I am brand new to the game and wanna start a campaign with a group. 18+ though I swear like a sailor lol
That sounds like it tracks!
hi, me and some of my friends are going to be trying D&D for the first time we kind of know what to do but I'm the dm and could use some advice to get started with, anyone got any? (it would be much appreciated)
Check in DM discussion.
Run a published module first. Lost Mines of Phandelver is free on dndbeyond and is the adventure that comes with the Starter Kit box. Dragon of Icespire Peak is also excellent for new DMs. Get yourself the role if you can’t see #dm-discussion and ask specific questions in there
oooo tyvm
LMoP is great. The Essentials Kit is my fave beginning module as well.
I'm wondering if anybody would be willing to do a campaign with me, i have a little experience playing and i have a level one rouge character, just need a dungeon master and some other players
So far not so lucky with my search

Yes, check the channels provided.
I have tried some of them. I just wanted to chek if anyone in here might need and extra player
btw i like youre avatar 👍
It's not the appropriate channel to do so. We do have rules and ask they are followed.
played enough dnd campaigns as a player but i'd like to start dm'ing does anyone have tips or something
I would suggest either picking up the Lost Mines of Phandelver (which is free on Dndbeyond) or Dragon of Icespire Peak as they are the starter kit adventures. Other than that, remember that you are a player too so you should be having fun as well as your players and be prepared to go off the rails :)
already picked doip, but thanks, i'm just looking for advice for being the dungeon master in general
read the module through at least once.
do a session 0 to set expectations/go over house rules
you players will go off track and you will need to improvise. this gets easier if you have a good grasp on the NPCs and their motivations
hey new to the world of dnd and only kinda made a character and would like to go over some stuff with someone who doesnt mind getting deep in the build with me and help learning more about everything outside of the starter kit....
all right thanks
Use inspiration liberally. That will both help newer players be able to survive, plus it encourages roleplaying and make the game more fun
@royal grotto Check out the #character-discussion for people who love that focus.

There are also a lot of games that are streamed all over the place, if you don’t mind watching a broadcasted game instead sitting in on one
YouTube, twitch, I think there are some linked from dndbeyond even. I don’t watch them really, but I’m sure some folks have more specific recommendations
Yeah, there’s quite a few on DDB’s YouTube channel.
https://m.youtube.com/c/DnDBeyond/featured
so i have just created a brand new character from scratch
i have no idea what im doing
i have never played a DnD game before
Where do i start?
usually with a concept, what kind of character do you want to make. A martial artsy monk or a spell slinger? If a caster type, do you want to be a book type (Wizard) or a natural caster (Sorcerer), maybe a warlock who made a deal they did not fully comprehend for magical powers. After that, pick a race that is cool, and use the steps in the DnDB character creator to finish it off. Rolling stats and picking spells/feats and such.
If you have the free account you can make and keep 6 characters, so I would just have one slot that i used to reroll characters over and over for practice/fun
your backstory is generally what a DM will use for story hooks for you and the party. Best to keep those fairly basic/generic until you know what world you are going to be in and then can flesh it out.
From there, head over to the #looking-for-players channel and see if you can find a DM that is looking for players on a date/time you can play and message them via Discords direct message option.
Find the game that is right for you.
I cannot upvote this tip nearly enough. So much of how you enjoy D&D will depend on who's at the table(real or virtual) with you. The more you can find a group that is compatible with your personality and play style, the better. It's also why a Session Zero is so important, so you can get a sense of the group dynamic before you start playing.
hello
Hello guys this might seem really bad but am a new guy and idk anything about D and D but I have always watched alot of series and this game is involved alot. I hope someone can help me understand the game and guide me through every aspect of it. Ty for bearing with me. U may dm me to help me better understand unless ofc it's against the rules in that case plz dont. Ty🙏 🙏
I would start by reading the Basic Rules which are available for free. You can download them as a .pdf file from the Wizards Of The Coast website, or read them on D&D Beyond. The Basic Rules cover much of what's in the Players Handbook, but don't contain all of the character options from the PHB(most notably you'll only see one "subclass" for each class), but the Basic Rules cover each step of character creation, the mechanics of combat, spellcasting, etc. Then if you have any specific questions you can bring them here and someone should be able to answer them.
Ty I shall download the PDFs and read both the Wizards of the Coast and D&D beyond
All PDFs of 5E WOTC products are pirating. DDB is the closest to electronic books that WOTC has.
the basic rules do exist as legal PDF
from WotC themselves
not to mention all the PDFs for Adventurers league etc on DMsGuild
Hi all. Im fairly new to D&D and don't know the rules inside out. I've been playing for a year or so, so have a reasonable grounding now. I wanted to run a one shot with some mystery or puzzle for some friends. Does anyone have some good one shot recommendations? Thanks 😊
Candlekeep mysteries, ghosts of saltmarsh, tales of yawning portal, journeys of radiant citadel, any of the adventurer league stuff is roughly 3 hours and my fave is waterdeep season.
Hi
The Basic Rules are free to the public and can be legally downloaded from their website.
@sour tendon thanks. I'll have a look into these 👍
Hi everyone. Im planning to start playing D&D. I don't know anything about the game. Can someone teach me the basics or give me recommendations? Thank you.
See the pinned messages here for some links to great resources to help get you started.
I highly recommend checking out the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Then watch some folks playing D&D (live stream or YouTube - just keep in mind that these are often designed for entertainment first rather then teaching the rules)
Then I suggest trying your hand at making a character - DnDBeyond's character builder is a great way to do that - they even have a guided approach for beginners.
Then find a group to play with.
thank you very much, @echo kelp!
So im working on an undead encounter there are bandit captains for bandits whats the equivalent for that for undead
Just use a bandits/bandit captain but give them some undead traits (maybe bandit captain can have the Zombie's Undead Fortitude trait). And reduce intelligence.
And yeah, this is better in dm discussion
You could always have an evil necromancer wizard in charge too
Inmeant to ask it there apparently i wasnt reading chats😭😭😭
hello im looking for a group to play with i know nothing about the game i want to find some people who can teach me

im sorry but how do subclasses work? do you start with them at level 1 or do you have to earn it by leveling up?
also when you multiclass can you have a subclass for that class too?
you get it when it says you get it, and there's nothing that implies you don't get a subclass on any subsequent classes
an example is sorcerer. How would you be a sorcerer with no origin for your sorcerous power? a Warlock with no patron? a Cleric with no domain? In that case, these classes get their subclass at level 1, since it's the background for why they're that class at all - or rather, how they are.
so if i were to make a stereotypically edgy shadow sorcerer, I would start with it on 1st level?
Sorcerer level 1 gets their subclass immediately.
Some classes, like Fighters and Rogues, don't get their subclass until their 3rd level.
i know artificers cant get a subclass until level 3
i was asking this for other classes
Same principle. Druids and Wizards get theirs at 2nd.
Cleric, Sorc, Warlock, get theirs at 1st.
Everything else is at 3rd.
i wanna see if i can make a shadow sorcerer/blood hunter character who honestly speaks and looks like a kingdom hearts villain
Hi! New here and auper excited to start playing my first game. Ive always wanted to play but never was able to find a group around me. Happy to meet you all!
Went into looking do dm. Hopefully i find one soon. Anyone have any other suggestions for a newbie?

Hey all I’m new here, I started listening to the critical Role podcast , and it made me want to look into learning more about d&d
Not the most sociable person is there any solo games I can try to learn things ?
I’d be interested in this too
There are some on the DMG.
Dmg?
Dungeon Master's Guide
All of the books have initialisms that people refer to them by, for example PHB (Player's Handbook), DMG (Dungeon Master's Guide) and MM (Monster Manual)
However, this being the newcomers channel, people really shouldn't be using them here, kinda defeats the purpose
Thanks @crude musk I’m totally new

Dungeon Master's Guild.

Hello
hllo
hello everyone. i really wanna start playing but i have no idea where to begin. i am looking for a group that can take me under their wing and show me the ropes if possible too. open to DMs if that helps.
Hey so I’m relatively new to D&D and I’m creating character sheets, I read somewhere that I had to subtract the cost of my starting equipment from my starting gold for example if I started with 30 GP and my class gave me a short-bow worth 25 I would only have 5GP to start with, is this true?
You either take the starting equipment or take the gold and buy your own equipment.
When you create your character, you receive equipment based on a combination of your class and background. Alternatively, you can start with a number of gold pieces based on your class and spend them on items from the lists in this section.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#StartingEquipment
Oh okay thank you both, it’s either one or the other
In general, the gear is the better choice.

#520291181083754516 and #880965682462875679 cover server rules and what channels we have and what they're for
i am confused within reading the rules of the handbooks since im appointed to be the dm
also do you have to have a homebrew
you can use homebrew or not. up to you if you are the DM
For your first time, I’d suggest sticking to the official rules as much as you can.
(And if you accidentally get something wrong, don’t sweat it.)
Is there a specific part of the rules that has you confused, though?
Actually for a first timer DM, I recommend staying as true to the book as possible. We all make mistakes. You want to learn the rules before you try to break the rules.
ello peeps. I'm a bit new to DnD. I played once during an anime con
Hello everyone, i am entirely new to the world of D&D but I've been wanting try it out for quite some time now! I don't exactly know what kind of game or style I'm looking for or what I'd prefer to play. I have made some characters already but I have no idea if they're any good or if I've done them correctly. I guess I'm just looking for guidance in general? 😅
yeah i heard about save throws
and I don't know what does it mean overall
A saving throw is generally an attempt to avoid some negative effect.
So for a spell like Fireball, for example, it isn’t a matter of the attacker trying to hit a target. It’s a matter of their targets just trying to get out of the way.
So they all roll a Dexterity saving throw. If they roll well enough, they can avoid some of the damage.
can you move to dm channel pls ^^ ?
Welcome! Feel free to link your character in #character-discussion if you want some feedback.
How exactly do I link a character?
Assuming you made it on D&D Beyond, just copy and paste the URL for your character sheet.
Ohh yeah that would make sense

Hi I am new to DND and I decide to pick up all this 20 minutes ago that's great and if anyone can help me get started that would be super good
The best way to start is probably to join a local game. If you like being extra prepared (like I do), you can start by reading the basic rules on DDB. It's free (and doesn't even require an account!).
there are also pinned messages on this channel with a lot of resources
First time playing bard do they only ever get a total of 3 bardic inspirations per rest?
the amount is equal to your Charisma Modifier
so if your Charisma mod is +3, then you have 3 Bardic Inspirations, if your Mod is +5 then you got 5
and of course they recharge on a long rest level 1-4 and on a short or long rest level 5+, in case you havent seen that
First time ever trying out DnD online, is there like a set guide that could help me out with getting my barring's together?
Check the pinned messages here in the channel - they link to some great resources to help get you started.

Hello new to this whole thing. I am hope to start playing at least once a week/month whatever I can find.
I have created a character use beyond. Just looking for a Gm to show me the roots and go from there. Any thoughts?
Hi @tight sand please see the post just above your talking about our looking-for channels. It is your best bet to find a GM/game.
If you want to grab some game knowledge make sure you check the links in the pinned messages of this channel
Thank you
So i should ask here?
ask here for what? a group or a game? No. Please see the Looking-for channels for that purpose. Questions about game materials you have read can go here.
DMing my first game Sunday after being into this for about a year (this month). Any pointers?
Focus on fun.
You don't have to know everything.
It's okay to pause the game to look stuff up.
It's okay to make a ruling in the moment, and after the game, figure out if you would change that ruling next time. Try and be consistent.
Make sure to have a discussion before the game about expected player behavior and how you will moderate any disagreements.
Set expectations and manage them.
Protect the game - if a player is causing issues, and is not willing/able to change that problematic behavior, boot them.
No D&D is better than bad (unfun) D&D.
hey im a newer player and new to beyond but is it worth it to buy the player bundle or should i just purchase the subclasses spells and feats separate because i do own a copy of tashas as a pdf the players handbook hard copy and pdf and xans as a pdf
In my opinion it’s best to purchase whole books incase you ever want to use the content later on or if you want to share with others
@distant bear right one and as just being player the players bundle should be enough to get me going
Just remember Dnd is a game that can be played for free everything you need can be found on websites like Dnd beyond or in free rule books. You don’t have to pay to have fun.
@distant bear i just noticed in character creation i wasnt able to pick most subclasses or feats when creating new characters and i found that to be pretty annoying even though im a subsciber
the free Basic Rules are all that's needed to play, the many sourcebooks and adventure books are just bonus content that's been pre-made for you
Talking about free stuff for playing dnd is also not my forte because I own real copy’s of all of base books and Tasha’s and Xanthar’s plus a copy of the PBH on Dnd beyond so it’s best I back out this conversation
@distant bear i see well thank you for the insight i do appreciate it
Your welcome
@high plover i just want to be able to use the multiple sublasses and stuff to prepare extra characters on dnd beyond while not having to have it shared with my dm because im in one campaign now and i see that i get everything on that one character but not my otherones that are not in a campaign
hello 😄
Hello everyone
Do I need any gear other than the dnd beyond app and online books to dm?
i don't know i'm new to this as well
You don't need anything beyond the free stuff at DnD Beyond to DM but it helps to have at least the DM Guide.
Understood
think of the basic rules as the demo version
I see....
the core books (PHB, DMG, MM) as the core version of the game, and then everything else (XGTE, TCOE, MOTM) is DLC.
Understood
Thanks bro
Hello, i have just landed here, i hope we have fun
Comgrats!
hi I just joined and am new to dnd. hope to have fun with you guys.
We hope you have fun too
Hey yaal im havin a dnd session in a week and im making my character me and the dm agreed i could have a skill that gives me advantage on gambling in any way is there a way to hide it in my character sheet from other players?
Other players can't view anything in the Description, Notes and Extra tabs on the character sheet if you want to put it there
^
ah alright cool
and a passive ability like extra luck on gambling or an ability thats non combative would be a skill right?
Possibly, I'm trying to think how tool profiencies are displayed
is anybody willing to help me out with making my first character for D&D im using dnd beyond and i need help rolling stats
i have no idea how to roll stats
Have you asked your DM what method they want you to use?
The most common method for rolling stats is to roll 4 d6 and then drop the lowest roll
oh i never thought about that thank you i will have to ask them!
Hey! Total newbie here, does anyone have advice on how to get started? I have a character✨
Do you think you understand the basic rules to play your character? If so you probably want to try and find a game

I think so, i'll post in the other chat too, thank you
what does one shot play style mean?
It's when you play out an adventure from start to finish in a short space of time, usually in a single session (ie it's done in one shot)
oke thx
hey yaal im trying to brain storm some ideas for my homebrew subclass my dms lettin me go the main ability would be a roulette with random effects positives are mostly just add an effect like acid or fire to my next attack but i cant think of many negative effects if yaal got any good ones id apresiate it i got one that would make me roll with disadvantage my next roll

Hi ! So I recently made an account out of the whim of it, but I've always thought D&D was just my thing. I'm very new to it and I would love to play with somebody less experienced, or more calm and patient. If you are a girl or my age (18) It'd be rly fun too so I can make a friend my age, but I don't have a preference.

hey, so what elven age would translate to about a 11 year old human?
Just longer lifespan
Although elves reach physical maturity at about the same age as humans, the elven understanding of adulthood goes beyond physical growth to encompass worldly experience. An elf typically claims adulthood and an adult name around the age of 100 and can live to be 750 years old.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/races/3-elf
ok! thank you so much
Anime elves age differently
Hellooo I'm new to D&D community
what age do they like get wrinkly tho
and grow old man beard
I don't know. When do they?
Player's Handbook says they can live to be up to 750, so maybe from 600+ onwards they get wrinkly?
Hiii,
I just have a question. I really want to DM where is it a great place to start for learning to be a DM ?
#dm-discussion - feel free to ask a bunch of other DMs questions, etc.
I do recommend getting to know the basic rules fairly well (you don't have to know everything) as it will help you run the game more smoothly.
And my #1 tip is - focus on fun
And #2 - set and maintain expectations - as a DM you need to protect the game from problematic (not fun) behavior. Make sure everyone's on the same page about how you will all be playing, what rules are in effect, and how to manage conflict/differing opinions.
A good starting adventure is Lost Mines of Phandelver which is free on the website and is from the first Starter Set
thank you so much
thank youuu
depending in which ones some have special stats added to them which is always cool
I meant in terms of protection
I know the game likes to thrown random things at you so
For example an enemy shoots an arrow towards you head
if your AC (armor class) is 16 it is what it is they're gonna do damage
will the helment keep you alive
if they roll above your AC you're gonna get hit then you also have your HP (heath points) which when they run out you start rolling death saves
in terms of keeping you alive for getting hit in the face it doesn't do much unless it adds to your stats
okay thanks
Always glad to help when i can lol
Rules as written, helmets have no effect on the game
there are a few magic items which are helmets i believe, which have special effects and whatnot
however, there is no way to target specific body parts... so AC (Armour class) is more general. Some armours could be flavoured to have helmets (like plate armour, for instance) but it wouldn't change anything
there are 3 classes of armour, Light, Medium and Heavy (as i said, there are no 'components' to armour like boots, helmets, gloves ETC, it's all generalised for simplicity)
Light armour gives less base protection, but you can use your dexterity to increase that protection (for example, leather armour only gives 11 AC, but you can add your dexterity modifier to it)
Heavy armour doesn't allow you to add your dexterity modifier, but is usually higher in base AC (Chain mail has an AC of 16), there is the caveat of they all giving disadvantage on stealth, and some requiring a certain strength score to wear properly
Medium armour is a mix of the two, allowing you to use part of your dexterity (up to +2) as well as having half-decent base AC (Scale Mail has a 14 AC). None of these require any specific strength to use, but some of them (Scale Mail and half plate) also give disadvantage to stealth.
👀
thx
its all fine, you can ping me
Hey just started D&D today and this is a WHOLE new world to me lol. Happy to be here
Take a look at the pinned messages here - lots of good links to help get you started.
Feel free to ask any specific questions here or in the appropriate channel.
Hello, was curious about dnd and wanted to get a taste of things and try it out. Watched critical role and heroes and halfwits. Needed a more experienced person for a little beginner guidance.
hi, im new to all this and wanted to learn more
Welcome! As people have posted above, check out the pinned messages for lots of great information.
Hello can anyone text me and see the new character im working on i want to see if its OP or not
we have #character-discussion for that
I went to the dnd beyond website to make my character but my friend says you should be able to select arace, though no races are coming up. Does someone know how to help?
is there a blue question mark icon to the left of the stuff saying home, race, class, (etc)?
yes
I am new to the game and want to start playing so could anyone please teach me and play with me?
Hello and welcome. You can find some helpful links in the pinned messages of this channel that should get you started :)
I’ve been playing since 1985. We allowed “called shots”, shots aimed at specific parts, but they came at a steep penalty. 1. Medieval weapons (bows etc) unless you were a master, weren’t known for accuracy. 2. Combat is Fluid, constant motion. Anyone above 5th level would know, standing still equals dead. Add that together, the penalties increased with the targets level as more experienced equals better at staying alive and being aware of potential threats. All that being said, research some critical hit charts etc. I also found this regarding 5E.

@pastel girder This channel is for the basics of D&D, I suggest you move your post to #homebrew
Um, ok. However, I was answering / replying to a question here that was not flagged as a wrong channel question, and neither were any of the other answers, so I’m not sure how answering a question is wrong, or in wrong channel. Please clarify. Thank you.
The question was not in the wrong channel, they were asking as a newcomer and people were explaining the game rules to them
However, what you're introducing to the discussion is more complex (at least beyond the scope of this channel) homebrew rules. As such, that should be moved to #homebrew
I hope this clarifies
If you have any further questions, I recommend you head to #moderator-support, that's where questions on the discord rules can be raised
sorry for answering nearly 2 hours late, but if you click that blue ? button, it should make the page show the races and not a long explanation of character race.
Ive never played dungeons and dragons in my life
No better time to start than the present! Check out the links pinned in this channel; they contain a lot of useful info
👍
i tried making a character, i got to the end of making it and it sais character incomplete, but it doesn't say what is incomplete, does everything including notes have to be filled in?
You probably didn't assign stats
a character needs: Ability scores, a class, and a race.
do i have to change anything in score calculations?
eyo i made a new caracter is it usable for any world or map or smth
you will have to find a game and discuss this with your DM
ah ok
when i add my ability scores, do i type them in "other modifier" or "override score" or something else?
nvm
neither.
yeah just figured it out sorry
Those two boxes are typically used for temporary changes to your score.
Other Modifier will add its value to your base score. Override Score will replace your base score entirely.
Hey quick question would anyone have time later to help me make a character and stat sheet since I’m new ive watched videos on how to start and everything but i am SO LOST in this fascinating world lol. Just trying to build life long friendships. If its not to much to ask
You’re welcome to ask general questions in here, or #character-discussion can help you narrow down your choices.
D&D beyond has a excellent character maker that is beginner friendly to help you learn the basics of character making if you wanna make a actual physical sheet, or you can just print it or use it as a PDF
So I’m like brand new never played but always have been interested someone wanna give me some tips ?? Much appreciated
Hey completely new looking forva group to play with
You can post in #750812887697588356 or look for a group that suits you in #looking-for-players of you want to join one
Hello! I take it this is newbie chat lol
It is! Welcome!
Thank you. I've put in a request looking for a DM, if anyone is looking to play with an absolute NOOB lol
how can i play dnd, can someone pls walk me through it?
Bartholomew James III Jr.#6686 me too i don’t understand it very well either
if i have to be honest you'll have more luck PMing the dungeon masters rather than looking for a dungeon mastee
that's how i ran a one shot today
D&D in a nutshell:
- You get a group together to play D&D
- Everyone reads/skims the rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules - free but limited, the Players Handbook adds more character options)
- Someone takes the role of Dungeon Master. They put together a scenario/adventure for the group to play. The DM is like a stage manager and rules lawyer/judge. They decide what rules are in effect and tell players what dice rolls are needed.
- Everyone else are the players and put together characters (like the main actors for the DM's scenario/adventure). See https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters for how to build a character. Fortunately DnDBeyond makes it pretty easy to put together a character sheet.
- Everyone playing (DM included) should have a good idea of expectations, appropriate player and character behavior, and how to handle conflicts and resolve them. The goal is to have fun.
- You play the game. The DM sets the stage, asks what your character does, you and other players play the role of the character's in the game, you say what you want your character to do, the DM decides if a dice roll is needed and what kind, and decides how things get resolved and the consequences of character actions, etc. Everyone together helps to tell a fun, collaborative story.
I highly recommend reading the pinned messages here in the channel - there's some great links to help get you started.
I also recommend maybe watching some D&D streams (keeping in kind they are more oriented towards entertainment over helping train people on the rules)
Then make a character to get a feel for how the rules interact with the character sheet.
Then find a group to play with - this can take time and effort. Finding a group can be a bit like finding a job. Be patient and be there - eventually you'll find (or even create) the perfect group for your D&D games.
