Sad.
Make yourself some good food?
I already had a delicious meal. Thank you sir or miss.
Sir. So why are you sad if you can share
I am because I don't understand any of you. Are they all far apart in age requirements?
hi is any one free to call so i can ask questions and such about dnd
Not a master dnd player but i could talk a short while
I'm sad because my book was lost.
I see. try to find it? or another book?
Dungeon master?
i ment like dm so i can call you bro i apreciate you btw
if u aint comfterble with that thats fine aswell
I see
My book was dragged and deleted.
Does it need to be a call? Is there a reason why you can’t ask here on the sever itself?
Guys I’m a new person looking to start a game that will accommodate newer players and are willing to kinda teach them?
Hello! Check out #find-a-game , and if you need any help with the rules (see #learn-to-play ) feel free to ask!
Where do I use the command?
Any of our chat channels you can type in will load the template based off the command you use and then post it to the correct channel
Ohhh okay!
If any new players want to have a session I’m free most days and I love teaching people dnd my dms are always open
Hey guys should I join and club
Hello
Hello
Hello
Im keen as a new player to join a long term campaign
I’m a new player as well I’m wanting to join a long term campaign or atleast find a dm willing to allow me to join or something I wanna learn to play
If you did find a campaign what would you play?
hi how do you submit a lf for dm request? T^T
You use a command explained in #find-a-game 😎
Normal dnd not a weird one piece naruto spin off lol
thank you so much!!
Just traditional high roleplay campaign
That'd be "the campaign itself"
Goats is more asking... what you would play
Ohhh character wise?
yea
Okay we’re gonna act like I didn’t just misread that lol. I have a character she’s very basic. An astral elf rogue chaotic good stats are about as basic for that race as it can get I have the character sheet if you’d wanna see it?
i just joined and this my first day on this server
Same
You don't know how many times my friends have told me that I would love DnD only for me to perpetually set it in the back of my mind and forget about it days later
Today I bite the bullet
If we are about to start a game, let me in?
I literally just joined, so I’m glad to see a handful of newcomers here with me!
Never played/had friends interested, but I’m excited to learn more and jump into an adventure!
same!
If we have this many newcomers

It may be best for us to stick together and run a few campaigns as a group
I have some friends who play it religiously. She actually bought me a set of dice a year ago because she knew I’d pull it from the back of my mind. She gave them to me today cause for once I figured why not try something new lol! I’ve never really played but I would love to start a campaign
As much as I'd love to run a game myself, there's just not enough creative juice (and attention to detail) in my brain to do so T^T
THIS!
That way we don't disturb more experienced players with our naivety
And can grow our knowledge simultaniously
ja!
All of yall, make sure to have gone through a perusal of the basic rules, and feel free to ask questions to elaborate on specifics
this channel is specifically for that purpose, actually
It’s mostly finding a DM willing to teach us
Figures as much lol
Just saying the question is faster :P
I've looked into DMing quite a bit and it would 100% be something up my ally
I'll just need to ensure I understand all there is to it at the end of the day
is CARL HERE?
The closest thing I have to Dm experience is storytelling for BOTC
Yay! I’d love to run a campaign with you! I know there are some books about DM and how to start and instructions if it’s something you wanna look into?
just asking
And writing novels I suppose
That’s all it really is
yeah i would love to join to!
Story telling with HIGH attention to details
Idk what BOTC is
Blood on the Clocktower
Love the idea!
I literally know nothing, and all I’ve ever had related to it was my own set of dice, but I think starting/learning together would be the best/most fun way to do it!
same
If y’all want to actually start something lmk and I can make a server and invite yall to it?
We may be able to help
I WANNA BE IN A GAME BADLY
A DM is only as prosperous as the players they lead
In that case why don't we get started now
)_)
Bet
0-0
From what I gather it’s very roleplay and you need to get into your character
ALRIGHT!
Yall can send me a friend request if you want to!
I’ll make a server and invite yall!
You're telling me the roleplaying game involves roleplay??
Make sure you all keep frequenting here to ask your questions
It's a fortunate time for you to take a read and ask some questions
i have a idea for a character
I love the energy. Good luck
Man I’m just saying lol!
but im scared its a disaster
Why be scared? Flawed characters make for better stories
bascilly a character who is a murder hobo at heart
I was shown an app on character sheets and everything!
Characters are defined not by what they are, but what they aren't
I will be making a character sheet within by this weekend at the LATEST!
I may need a little bit of assistance, just to be sure I’m going about it the right way, but I’ll watch some videos/read some articles on how to do it!
but "accidently" helps the party
Yea! And if you want some tips I did a little OC things back in the day so I’d be willing to help!
I have a lot of character design/writing under my belt
If you find a unique concept you'd like to run with, don't let fear stop you

thanks i was just nearvous!
At the end of the day, this is simply a game. You lose nothing yet gain plenty from design failure
So how many here would be wililng and able to start something right now if we find a DM?
Keep me posted on on the group that seems to be forming
I just made a server for discussing a possible campaign if you wanna send me a friend request
It's late for me, but I can make time.
Same to you!
I got you invited!
Added
im currently thinking of my guy sending some poor goblin into space with a ax
Already sent the request
I just want a normal campaign lol high fantasy sorta thing
Woah I see some planning already happening, how many folks and if ya'll got room for one more 👀
Sorry were full now
Theres 6 newbies in the group already and thats alot for the dm. If a spot opens up we'll let you know.
No worries, best of luck folks!
Hi
please use #looking-for-dm to find players or #looking-for-players to tell people about any upcoming games (even last minute ones). Directions on how to use those channels is here: #find-a-game
bruh i got kicked
by some dude because he doesnt think mountain dwarf is real
IT IS
Sounds like a bullet dodged early
man who am i gonna play with now?
It was real in 2014. They may have been using 2024 rules where there's really only 1 type of dwarf, but sounds like they could have been nicer about it
@jagged pier you got kicked for caps locking everyone and screaming random ideas at people.
Bringing nothing advantageous to the table while we're trying to organise actual characters. Seemingly like a 10 year old(no offence) hopped up on sugar kids
i was useing some outdated sources XD
alr cool i get it
i was being rude
yeah i was at blame
Good of you to acknowledge that.
Just do your research and find a group more suited to your needs
That was just one game that ended up incompatible/clashing
i have been making so many character ideas lately
shame a whole lot of it would need homebrewing
Hehe...started a campaign with some friends and we've only had one session so far and it went chaotic in like five seconds.
well now im completly demorlized
and im probly not gonna even try to join more games
welp im leaving for now
bye
That's a severe overreaction
Ahh! So this is the space for the folks who are new to dnd?
Yep! First course of action, as always, is a perusal of the basic rules. Feel free to ask any clarifying questions that arise

Thank you! 🥺
Love it when that happens
@bright crag sorry for the troble 0_0
hm?
oop
Same...I love DnD for the chaos. I haven't played in a few years and happy to have a group again.
only good bug is a dead bug
mb i meant that for trama
(big hd fan)
since apperntly im kinda dumb and tried to use a subrace that you cant anymore0_0
i genuly didnt know it wasnt avaible
It can, it just has to be in a game using 2014 edition
you cannot escape the bugs
brother man i think he forgave you. no need to be so apologetic
so like
yall just had a misunderstanding it happens
yknow honeypot ants?
i could do without spiders tho even if they are important
working on making a honeypot ant alchemist that stores potion in the abdomen
granted. 50%+ to mosquito population
ill go live in NM where they dont exist
Ok... Don't know what that is
lemme fetch a pic for a character ive been thinking about
wheres that bugger..
found it
oh right
I misread that as burger
no images here. anywho
And yeah no photos
thinking of making a trilobite beetle paladin with focus on defense
Oo
shit would be wack design wise since trilobite beetles look dope as hell
Reflavour a warforged and you’re set.
Or a Thri Keen
omg
if i mix both id get something similar to the architech from silksong
thats dope as hell for an artificer
Ah that bugger, yeah that could be very cool
tho i do need some homebrewing for the honeypot ant
How so?
since yknow. abdominal liquid storage
No, i did not know
But surely there’s something. What would that do mechanically?
hold on i think i can send a gif
No gifs
aight
The dragon will eat it
Well im sure you can do that in dnd.
What do you wanna be able to do mechanically with it?
Ummmm, not with it being on topic
DM’s maybe?
yeah imma do that
there
this is the honeypot ant
the whole idea i got is storing a whole lot of one potion and potentially have it used as a breath weapon
so like
Ahhh
a heal potion used as a breath weapon on allies
less effective but heals multiple at once
thats the gimmick i had in mind
Yeah thats definitely homebrew, or flavoured healing
there was also my boy aranea that had to be homebrewed a lot since it was a feral (not anthro) silk producing spider
That's a very niche benefit. The most you could really get out of that is extended reprieve from the Malnutrition hazard...
i mean thats about the irl ants
the idea for the character ant was the potion breath thing
that feature would rely on either an extremely specific character option or on the DM having the party find certain magic items.
i was thinking about if push comes to shove and my ant does die then wathever potion he was storing bursts out
i like playing characters with some form of gimmick to them
hmmm
i got another character/gimmick idea
some support character that uses a censer as a weapon and buffing tool
thought id be fun to basically have an incense burner as a main item
might head to bed. been yapping up a storm here
Hi c:
hola
You can reflavor a mace or a morningstar as a censer
Instead of a spiky ball at the tip its the censer itself
oooh smart
if that didnt work i was thinking of making a perfumer similar to the ones in elden ring
so likely an alchemist?
There's the Alchemist subclass for the Artificer
that could work
oh yeah you could definitely flavour your spells as doing those perfume swings
or a Flail, like the Devotee's Censer magic item that uses a flail as a base
Hi, i’m willing to start playing but i’m not sure how to créate a character
Read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have.
Also, https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character is a guide
think the most sessions i had in any campain was 3
group kinda dissolved most of the time
there was that one time that the DMs house burnt down
I’m sorry what now?
happened like a year or so ago
didnt get the details but they are safe
also got promoted from he to she since then
Glad everyone is safe
wild stuff lmao
Didn’t expect to read that today
The kinda story the DM was developing was fire 🔥
Thanks
since my brain keeps wanting to call them he due to calling them he for the longest time ive been using my default they and them for anyone
Where Can i find people To play online campaigns?
they made half the party allergic to healing potions (jk)
Wish the looking for players thing worked a bit more like destiny lfg. Open to public at that time, once spots are full yall play for however long determined with everyone going "same time next week?"
Diabólical work
Id play multiple times a week if I could with the same character honestly
you can check the #find-a-game channel and go from there
or try forums like r/lfg
Thank you gentle human
Im curious as to why that guy got pinged twice by 2 people within the same minute
is it a question only they can help with? or something more general?
no worries hope you get the answers you need
so many nice ppl here
SIR! id like to compliment your jojolion pfp

Sir, as most as i’m excited for someone sharing a hobby i love, i must correct u, it is Jojolands. But i love all Jojos
Thanks for the compliment ❤️
CRAP
still cool
Did you finish Jojolion?
nah im on sbr rn but i watch small deep dives here and there
Sbr is the peak man, enjoy it
Ive played Baldur Gate 3, and i liked the ranger class, is it recommended for a newcomer to start with a ranger?
?tag new complexity
Class Complexity
Below is a quick overview of which classes take the most effort to learn. Low complexity classes make for an easier starting point, while higher complexity classes offer more versatility. Any of these classes can be played by beginners, so pick whatever excites you!
SBR is arguably one of the best parts of Jojo
animes also aren't really a D&D topic or on topic for D&D newcomers
apologies
Sorry
Thank u
Ranger is unfortunately heavily homebrewed in bg3 so it takes some time to get used to it
Namely Natural Explorer and Favored Enemy are more niche in dnd than they are in bg3
Oh, i didnt know
I prefer the bg3 version tbf but it is what it is
i asked in the other channel—but it kinda got flooded and I didn’t want to be a nuisance.
would anyone be willing to help me out making a temporary character before i commit to any one-shot or campaign? i understand how I just want a trial run!
I can certainly try to answer an questions that might pop up, and I'm sure others would to.
I would recommend starting with this step by step guide in the rules:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
If you feel like anything is stopping you from continuing, here is the perfect place to ask.
👋
Hallo
Heyoo
I am new to this, I used to play with a group of friends but we never followed all the rules of D&D. I'm curious about how it works correctly with other player's.
This helped incredibly! Theres just a lot of information and stuff regarding everything the characters have thats a little overwhelming. But hopefully when I’m talking to a dm about it, it’ll be a little less confusing.
Yeah it's a lot for sure, but a lot of the complexity sort of fades into the background when you actually play.
The basic Rhythm of Play is the same regardless: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#RhythmofPlay
When looking for games, you can also look out for games that are advertised as open to newcomers.
thank you! and yeah, I have been :)
Going through the monsters Manuel rn and I see on hp it says like for example the owlbear it says 59(7d10 + 21) what does this mean exactly ?
The first number is the average hp of that monster. The numbers in the parenthesis is the roll formula for it, which includes the monsters hit dice.
Most of the time you'll just want to use the average, but you can also determine the monsters hp randomly by rolling these.
The hit dice are also relevant if the monster (for whatever reason) takes a short rest.
Ahh so if I want to add some randomness I would role 7 10 dice and then add 21 ?
yep
I find it to be too much work most times. If I want a weaker monster, I just subtract some number that feels appropriate that is still within these bounds. And the opposite for a tankier monster.
First impression of this game, let me guess, it has dungeons and dragons?
Gold dragon best dragon

Question can you explain to me the hit dice
Can a character have a dog? Also if i want to add mindflyers on a campaign wich is the best options for that
Hit Point Dice, or Hit Dice for short, help determine a player character’s Hit Point maximum
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/rules-glossary#HitPointDice
Monsters have them too. When creatures take a short rest, they can choose to spend hit dice to heal up. They regain spent hit dice when they take a long rest.
So they're sort of a measure of how far you can push your health during one day.
Depends in what capacity. As a harmless pet? That's up to the DM. Something that can actually participate in combat? That player would likely need to pick up a subclass that gets a combat-ready pet, such as the Ranger Beastmaster.
So for hit dice they’re only used when short resting so if I have 3d10 hit dice when I short rest I use the 3d10 to determine how much I heal?
You also add your constitution modifier to each roll. Say you have a a maximum of 24 hit poins, but you took 10 points of damage. So you have 14 hit points.
You choose to roll 1d10, roll a 6 and add your constitution modifier. Let's say for example that you have a 14 in constitution, giving you a +2 modifier. You end up with a total of 8 hit points healed.
So now you're at 22 hit points. You can choose not to spend another hit dice, if you want to save it for a later point.
Or you can spend a second hit die immediately if you really want to heal those remaining 2 hit points.
I see thank you for covering this
Will let you know when I find a dungeon or dragon
You have successfully found a dungeon
And forgoing spoilers maybe a few sessions away from finding a dragon
Hii I'm a total newbie, I wanted to play my first dnd campaing and I found my way here :3 (I have absolute zero idea someone pls halp)

Can I get some help
What is homebrew
Like ik what it is but like what are the specifics of what can and can't be in a homebrew game
?homebrew
The term homebrew can refer to a few things, but mostly means "unofficial rules," or rules that you won't find in an official D&D publication.
Homebrewing can be a Dungeon Master creating their own monster from scratch, writing their own adventure, or deciding to permit changes to existing rules to better fit their table or players' needs.
It's important to note that homebrew rules are only acceptable at non-organized tables, and homebrew rules cannot be used at Adventurers League tables. Always check with your DM on what homebrew is (or isn't) permitted at your table.
So could I make an elden ring inspired campaign and call it homebrew
It would be homebrew yes because it wasn’t published by D&D

okay hello guys
Welcome!
Welcome @fathom musk !!
Is there dnd but other themes than fantasy?
I'd say it covers different flavors of fantasy, but the system itself is pretty tightly fixed in fantasy as a baseline.
I understand so no futuristic stuff or modern day stuff
Keep in mind that D&D typically serves a heroic fantasy. While it can accommodate non-fantasy settings (e.g. Sci-Fi, Modern, Superhero, etc) it is not the best at it
Yep. There are space pirates in D&D, but they are fantasy space pirates.
Hahahahahahaha
A TTRPG built for the theme you want will generally serve you better than modifying one built for a different theme.
if you have an experienced dm then they wouldnt have a problem changing to from fantasy.
No just player, i didnt really see big platforms outside of dnd to find people who might do non fantasy ttrpg but i got it, changing the core of dnd which fantasy wont make much sense ok ty
thats not true you can still do it
There may not be big platforms, but there are enthusiastic platforms. They exist if you look for them, just gotta be specific.
Maybe if i had more experience like a gm i will keep that in mind for the Future
Yes for sure
dont let that hold you back even new dms can be amazing at it
With homebrew and imagination you can do anything with the game. However the base rules are meant to accommodate fantasy.
Hahahahahaha thank you for the Motivation
It’s not that it’s impossible to reflavor and make extra mechanics or change rulings around to accommodate say, modern or sci-fi. It’s just that it won’t be as able to mechanically represent those themes in a satisfactory way
And the more extra rules, the harder it will be for everyone to keep track of all of the exceptions.
Yea reasonable
For example, there are options for futuristic and modern weapons, but they’re sort made through the lens of 5e mechanics, which means they’re made from the same chassis as the regular medieval/fantasy weapons.
I’d also like to play if you need more peeps to join, I’m new as well 😅.
Yes there alot of aspects which would be influenced into more complication and complexity
To use a car analogy, can you take a normal passenger road car and turn it into an off-roader? Sure, with $10,000 and 3 months in the shop, but it's probably easier to just buy an off-road vehicle to begin with;
i.e, if you want a dystopian futuristic TTRPG, easier to just pickup Cyberpunk rather than try to make D&D fit that setting
For me fantasy and those mediaval figures and tokens and all dont look appealing. Personally i dislike to look at those grotesque fantasy races and enemies (◞‸◟) sci fi and modern figures on the other hand 😝
So, for example, in a modern TTRPG you might want a robust gun system like attachments and manufactures and ammo types. In 5e they’re all summed up simply (e.g. “hunting rifle,” “pistol”).
In another example in a sci-fi RPG you might want a hacking system. Which would require a computer system (or just computers as items) 5e doesn’t have that so you could either play a TTRPG that has that already or do a bunch of homebrew to make such a mini-system work in 5e
Hiyas everyone
I’m new to…everything but I created a character on d&d beyond just because
If you were interested in other TTRPGs for sci-fi #non-dnd-topics could definitely give some good recommendations
Yes
Thank you ill look into it i seriously appreciate your help

This server is English only I'm afraid
It's also about D&D, not Minecraft.
Does anyone want to play D&D I only play as a player and don’t have much experience but I’m looking for a few ppl who would be down to play online
I'm also curious on dnd beyound do I need all the books to unlock all classes and races and feats to create characters and lore? for a campaign as both a player and dm?
@swift linden I'm also still a new player looking for people to play dnd with but also a dm for the campaign
Same looking for players n aDM
wonder if anyone on here know more about dnd beyond and playing online I use to play in a club in person using old school character creation now just trying to figure out these new ones

My Portuguese is so shit, so let’s hope this right: Ei, quão bom é o seu inglês? Este parece ser um servidor apenas em inglês
No my bro
Anyone want to play on a Minecraft server and be in my clan? DM me.
But you were very good.
I don't know any English, I'm using a translator lol
Why are you looking for Minecraft players on a Dungeons & Dragons server?
Hey folks please make sure to keep all posts in English and generally on-topic per sever rules
Good question, I don't know either, I just didn't know where to look, I don't even have a computer, I play Minecraft on my phone lol
This channel is intended to help folks new to D&D get started with the core game rules/mechanics and help answer their questions
ok sorry
this is not a minecraft server
Yeah I think we got that clear that that would be off-topic
Ok sorry
i was just scrolling down, didnt see these messages, my bad
Feel free to ask about D&D questions you might run into as you learn D&D
Gusta, do you understand or do you need me to translate?
Yes, I understand. Thank you for your attention.
Good ☺️
Hi guys! I'm playing after a long time so I have chosen the artificer class but we are using rolled stats and im confused between which one to choose, can someone help me?
what lineups do you have?
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
Too much turkey yesterday… lol
@main fulcrum is there a way to get all content with out buying each book just that's a lot of money to build up the content up to the current books for 5e
there is not
No - someone has to buy the books
They can use DnDBeyond’s content sharing to share it with their group in the campaign
Ahh no like I have rolled for the stats or rather my DM did and asked me to pick from 3 options? Can I dm you if you don't mind? It's totally alright if that's not okay
of course!
Thank you!
@echo kelp thank's been trying to do homebrew characters and the dm I had told me I could do that but on dnd beyond the character sheet won't allow full homebrew unless you have all content so was wondering if this was going to be fixed so if homebrewing you could use only homebrew that you or the dms have created
No - you’d have to use what you have access to or create for yourself.
Some D&D content is not free
@echo kelp any books recommended that have all creatures, races, and classes and could make a westerner aka cowboy class? some groups I normally play with or have played with is all homebrew and some have a journey through the realms story where the players are transported from different realms or came from and also different dimensions
There is no single book that has everything
There's a third party Gunslinger class that might work for you, depending on exactly what vibe you're looking for
for the gunslinger look at this: https://magehandpress.com/product/complete-gunslinger-pdf/
well the character I'm wanting to design has amnesia and is kinda like a apoclitiptic style with a mix of steampunk but I also want one of his weapons to be a gunblade ff8 style but folding but was looking for just a few books that give more races and classes had someone that wanted a fairy race but we was also looking at getting the new 2024 books for the new rules and changes to what we could do
Just to clarify, have you found a DM and a campaign for this character yet?
no not yet I had a lycan character made for another campaign I'm still waiting for a update on and he has a Ranma 1/2 style curse but he changes a little differently and we are still working out the details on that and his lycan heritage is like the wolfking books and series on Netflix so trying to have some ideas of some new characters for other campaigns
Honestly it sounds like you're homebrewing enough that you'd have to just make the content on D&D Beyond whether you bought the books or not
How many modifiers can you add? Like +1 ,+2 more?..
i havents seen anything past +2
All your modifiers that apply are added to your rolls
There’s no limit on how many modifiers can be used at once
so like
THANKS!
whats the highest possible modifier?
+infinity, theoretically
there are tomes that increase your stat and your stat cap
Isn’t it +10?
read below XD
but yes, normally +10
what is best way to do a modifier in character creation for dnd beyond if don't have a dm? most dms want to create a sheet with the player
Yeah, I read that, stats only increase your modifiers up to a certain amount
100 strength and 1000 are the same
I only ask because your 'cowboy' is unfortunately a bit of an unrealistic character pitch for the vast majority of campaigns. I think you're going to have a very difficult time finding a game that will accept this idea whole cloth if you don't already have a DM.
ohhh you i forgot about that
thanks for clearing that up then
For a starting character? You're almost never going to see more than a +3, and only in one ability score.
(keep in mind extra buffs like bardic, expertise, etc
It gets pretty high, but I don’t think you can get an unlimited modifier
nope, thats where my confusion was with the above +10
@timid locust well a lot of my character designs are for more of homebrew campaigns so yea it is up to the dm but once made I make a few tweaks and changes to my characters if need to but not too much where it's not my character anymore
also, homebrewing this much as a newbie isnt smart
I'm only trying to set realistic expectations. It's nice that you've found DMs who have accepted less-than-traditional characters in the past, but it's important to understand that it's not the norm.
Every step further you get away from the traditional swords and sorcery adventurer with all the standard equipment and abilities, it becomes exponentially more difficult to find a DM who will be willing to accept it.
I have done homebrew before just this is first time not having friends and loosing a dm and doing everything online and through dnd beyond for character sheets is also new to me and I have seen homebrew campaigns with noobs on critical roll and other YouTube and podcast shows
I certainly can't stop you, but be prepared to have to cut one or all of the following:
- Cowboy theme
- Post Apocalyptic/Steampunk theme
- Gunblade
- Weapon that transforms
weapon doesn't transform and gunblades have been a thing and there are guns that fold and interlock most rifles are done this way same as percy from vox machina
What I mean is that none of this is actually in DnD.
The more you add, especially when it has mechanical effects, the less likely you are to find a game.
Welcome! Have any questions about DnD or how to get started?
Idk i joined but i might leave since im kinda too shy when it comes to socializing even if I find it fun
Up to you! If you have any questions, we'll be happy to answer them here whenever.
I'm not entirely sure that this is the right channel, so please correct me if it is not, but I've been playing DND for about a year now and for the first time I'm making a character that can cast spells. I feel like this is a super dumb question but how exactly do spell slots work? I googled it and the answer confused me
Spell slots depend on level, every class will mention the amount of spell slots you have of each spell level
also not sure on that some changes were made for 5e
You can use a spell slot of a level to cast a spell of that level or lower. E.g. cast a level 2 spell with a level 2 spell slot or cast a level 1 spell with a level 2 slot
Oh okay I see, thank you for the explanation
Important to note some spell (but not all) have extra effects when cast at a higher level. Easy example magic missile, a 1st level spell, gets an extra missile for every level after 1. If it has an effect like this it will mention in the spell description
When you want to cast one of your prepared spells, you have to spend a spell slot of at least the spell's level. For example, if you want to cast fireball, you have to expend a spell slot of at least slot level 3 (meaning 4 and 5 and higher are also valid options to spend on fireball, but not level 1 or level 2 spell slots)
Would anyone like to join a campaign session ime doing rn. It's a one shot. And I need players
We start in a couple minutes
D&D typically has more planning. Also, advertising for players / a DM is done via the #find-a-game instructions, it's considered off-topic for every other channel than the "Looking-for-X" channels
Hey everyone! New here
hi everyone, i’m new to dnd. i know basically nothing but would love to join a campaign and get into the world 🙂

okay thanks will do
I've played a campaign, but friends moved to different cities.
Definitely looking to start a new or joining a campaign if anyone's playing online and has room :)!
Check the listings in #looking-for-players for games that want people, read the details, respond as appropriate and cross your fingers.
Type /looking and select the option for #looking-for-dm to advertise yourself as a new player in search of a group. Be sure to include your regular availability!
There are other Discord servers where people gather for games. You can find them in #looking-for-community .
Aside from here, you could also try LFG areas in sites like Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started. #find-a-game has more information.
Amazing, thanks Mr Smith!
How does one go about deciding or choosing stats for their characters when joining or in an campaign
I forget the command for it but you typically use standard array or point buy.
As for where to apply your highest stats, it is going to depend on your chosen class.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#GenerateYourScores
link above should have all the info
NPCs have their own stat blocks that are very different than a player character sheet.
You’ll want to stick with stat blocks as the system is not built for two characters that use character sheets to fight each other.
Ok how do i do that
Yo thanks man
You can look up stat blocks here https://www.dndbeyond.com/encounter-builder
this link in particular is a tool for setting up combat encounters
You’ll want to filter it to use source books you have access to like the free basic rules
It wont let me add it to my campaign
because thats not how ddb works
There should be a drop down box for you to tie it to your campaign if you created one already in dnd beyond.
#ddb-support should be able to help better as they know more about that the sites functionality
I’m really tryna find something to join but unsure of which tbh
Hello, I'm new, how do I find a group to play with?

In that case, #find-a-game will help you
Thanks
dont advertise for games here
ok sorry\
Okay! I want to learn to play, but none of my friends play/live around me.
What should I do?
Read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have.
It's completely possible to play online if you have nothing local
Yeah, I'm wondering the same thing, I can't drive, so it would be convenient
Once you figure out the rules, #find-a-game has the information you need to start looking for games online via this server.
It wont let me put a tolken on my map can anyone help
Should I make a roll20 account if I plan on playing with ppl online or do many ppl play off discord and ddb?
You should wait till you find a group
Well actually pretty sure there’s a looking for games thing on roll20.
I’ll up to you
Yea Roll20 has pages and pages of listing for games, unsure if you need an account and log in to view
Ok. We had a group together but the dm was going to run it off of discord then he ghosted us. Ill check out roll20
Your map in what program?
D&d beyond

#ddb-support is the best place to ask then

Jst got my first board game…looks intimidating
I’m a young player! Though I just got interested in the game and it’s kinda tricky for me to understand the rules and whatnot 💔
Hi! I’m new to dnd and am playing in a campaign with a first time DM. I went into this totally blind and set up a character that I’m now struggling to make effective. I plan to read the “learn to play” thread. Any suggestions for what should I should do after that?
FYI: I’m not very familiar with Discord and dnd in general so please be gentle.
Are you a DM? I know that means Dungeon Master bc earlier I skimmed over the rules and stuff. If so, can I join your campaign (or is it called a party?) I’m just looking for someone to help me learn how to play and people to actually play with
What are you playing?
For ability scores do you guys go for standard, random, or point cost
It’s okay!!
My games roll but it really depends on the DM and how they want to run their game
A homebrew, I think? It’s set in Norse realms with Norse gods (one god is for sure made up).
*roll with the option to take a revised standard set
I use point buy for my games
Hm, well, difficult to help with a homebrew class
You can turn off the option to allow DMs from the server, if that's the only issue. Then people would have to just reply in the thread
I think I misunderstood. My character is a Tabaxi warlock.
OK, that's good, that's not homebrew.
In what way do you feel ineffective?
Sending a character sheet might help us identify some possible problems too
So as a new dm would you guys recommend I just use standard array skill points
Either, but standard array is the simplest
I offer my players all the options, 4d6 drop lowest, standard array, or point buy, but as Nugget says standard array is certainly the most straightforward
Hello! I just joined, my name is Lady
Okay I’ll def offer thank you
Hello
Greetings
I think some of it can be cleared up with the learn to play read, but I’m struggling with resource management. There are so many moving parts (spell slots, feat things, magic items, etc), I don’t think I chose good spells (or maybe I don’t know how to use them effectively), and I fumbled the basic character build. I’m a hexblade warlock but went with the tome invocation. I thought these made the best sense with my backstory but they aren’t really pairing well.
What are your stats looking like?
Hm. Well I'd say ask your DM for help, but you said they're new too, yes?
Spell save dc is what we use when we are hit by a spell to half the damage or take full right ?
So they both roll a d20 with modifiers and that decides who wins?
No
For example, say I cast fireball on you
And the Spell Save DC is 14
You have to make a dexterity saving throw, and if you don’t meet or beat 14 you take full damage
Str 8, Dex 16, Con 15, Int 8, wis 10, cha 17. AC 16. 41 hp.
This is based on my stats
Point buy?
So when I go for the save I do 8 plus the modifiers I have
Yes. Shiny new car smell brand new.
No, you roll a regular dexterity saving throw
I don’t know what that is.
Your spell save DC is what others have to roll to not take the full effects of your spells
Nvm then
Hihiii, I have a question!! I’m currently new to dnd and I’m currently reading the how-to-play channel (+dndbeyond’s basic rules)
Can I know what is homebrew..?
Homebrew is stuff you add to your games that doesn't come from official D&D sources
Okay I get it so everyone has a built in spell save and the caster just needs to try and beat it
No, the receiver has to meet or beat it
OHHH thanksss!!
Not the caster - but the targets of the spell are trying to beat the spell save DC to reduce the damage/effect of the spell
Yea sorry I ment that
You may have, through no fault of your own, discovered why some do not recommend casters for first time players; your DM could, or should, allow you to switch to a simpler class, or, as you say, read up on the Warlock class/subclasses, how spells work generally, how your particular spells are used. This #dnd-newcomers chat and #character-discussion can help further, and it may be helpful to share your character sheet in the latter channel for further input.
Warlock is one of the more complex casters, and hexblade is the most unorthodox of them.
I looked it up. Yes, I believe it is point buy.
Ty. I do plan to do a lot of reading - and I have already - unfortunately I’m a visual/hands on learner so I’m struggling to retain info. I’ve looked into in-person games in my area but no luck.
I’ll definitely check out the other resources too. I feel I’ve got a great backstory that the DM can easily weave into their story-telling, it’s mainly the actual mechanics I can’t quite grasp.
YouTube ought to have Warlock class guides, if that works better for you, otherwise to some extent use makes master, keep playing and it ought to become easier - but there is no replacement for class knowledge in terms of effectiveness, however or in whatever form you gain it
But again, having said that one of the best ways to learn a new class is to just play it - if you have a grasp of the fundamentals of the game as a whole
One of the veteran players has been great at helping, but I hesitate to give them full access to my character sheet. I would like for my backstory twists to be discovered in gameplay.
Ive been playing since the summer and have improved, it’s just going slowly. Are there sessions to watch from a player’s point of view? Like I can see their character sheet and stuff?
You can always redact the backstory stuff, if there's an experienced player at the table take advantage of their offers to assist, and you might even ask your inexperienced DM for help.
I don't think they'd be warlock specific but again YouTube might have some very basic learn to play videos, where you can see things from a player's POV
I have asked the DM for help and, unfortunately, it hasn’t gone well. They are being as helpful as they can, but they are learning too.
Thanks for the advice!
One of the best ways is going to be keeping it simple and analogizing.
So, what specifically do you need help with? Spell slots?
Sort of. I don’t think I’m built to take a lot of damage so I feel I need to be out of the main fray, but I don’t deal a lot of damage spell-wise either.
I have devils sight and darkness but the few times I’ve tried to use darkness it didn’t go well.
So, what specifically didn't go well with Darkness
It’s been a while, so I don’t recall all of the details. If memory serves, I cast it but was tracked with sound or something? It basically did nothing and I lost a spell slot.
While it wouldn't innately completely deny anyone any ability to recall or navigate their surroundings, it would still make things trying to see in there effectively have the Blinded condition. And since you would ignore it with Devil's Sight, you would not be subject to it, having Advantage on attacking them, and them having Disadvantage on attacking you
A Warlock with Devil's Sight sitting in Darkness spamming Eldritch Blast or using other spells is a very potent combo
Especially as many Warlock spells rely on Concentration, kinda hard to interrupt a spellcaster if you can't see them
I have eldritch blast and agonizing blast, but it usually hits for single numbers of damage. Idk if that’s the luck of the dice or if I have something wrong.
What's your Charisma (CHA) score?
17
What level are you?
6
You get two beams of Eldritch Blast at level 5 (up from 1) and each does 1d10 damage, so yea it's still possible to get bad rolls and single digit dmg
Roll 2d10
Result: 2
🙁
That seems to be my luck 🙃
Its everybody's luck 🙂
Your Charisma is your Prime Requisite, your most important stat, and powers your spells, try to get it up to 18 later on, even numbers for ability scores are to be preferred over odd ones, typically
im so tired of people charging for games i litearly made a fully free server lol
Most games aren’t paid though?
ive just gotten tied of having friends complain about not being able to find a game because people try to force them to pay 140 for art they didnt ask for
Hey guys I'm new to D&D can anyone help me?
Read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have.
Well, Free basic D&D rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules

You could mitigate that with Agonizing Blast, which lets you add your Charisma modifier (+3) to the damage. So each blast would then do 1d10+3 damage! On top of 120ft range, infinite ammo, and Force damage
My main question is what do you do if none of your friends play it? Can you play it solo?
play online
I heard about that but I was told it's not the same
The game isn’t designed for solo play, but online play is a very popular alternative
Is there an official D&D website?
I do prefer in person play, but you can still definitely have fun online
its not the same but its still fun and if the dm uses visuals its still a blast
Probably DnD beyond
Ok one sec I'll check that out
but there are alot of tools that are useful for different things
Okay
The other question I had was how limited is the game? I heard there are a lot of rules but idk if they're mandatory or optional or anything really
it depends non the dm im pretty lax so i bend them but some people play more grounded dnd
I already have agonizing blast.
its important to talk witht the dm and figure out if you are suited for that tyoe of game
Well, you have a 4/10 chance of rolling double digit damage. Either way, without a considerable dedication to it, Eldritch Blast often won't be a main damage dealer, as martials typically get more versatility on their weaponry and weapon attacks
I thought Eldritch Blast was supposed to be a staple for warlocks? Isn’t it supposed to be the best cantrip in the game?
Definitely, yes, but for it to be more than just the best cantrip, it may need a little extra oomph.
When you take the invocations that make it better
Yea, its the Invocations that give it that extra oomph
I already have agonizing blast. What else is supposed to pair with it?
Some things like repelling blast and lance of lethargy can really begin making it very versatile and thus truly carve out a niche for itself. Being able to push 10ft, and then slow them down by 10ft, that can really mess with certain encounters, for example
Or the infamous use of Grasp of Hadar, while flying, for a free extra 10ft fall for the victim 1/turn
If you're trying to be a weapon build, which hexblade often is, then you're probably better off taking pact of the blade and those invocations instead
If you spread your focus too much, you'll end up middling at a bunch of stuff and great at nothing
Yeah, I’m figuring that out now. I made my choices based on what I thought fit best with my backstory and the trajectory I want their story to go.
I wasn’t particularly trying to be a weapon build. I wanted to be able to duck into melee if needed for a single round but mainly be a spell caster.
I don't see any harm in at least asking your DM for a mulligan on this. If I were the DM I'd rather there be fun had than forcing choices that didn't work out.
In that case, I'd honestly probably ask your DM if you can switch subclasses
Agreed
Hexblades are generally designed to use weapons with some spells to assist
Just confirming, you’re playing 2014 rules correct?
Oh do you have Hex, that's another standard combo with Eldritch blast
They’ve offered to let me switch but im already confused enough. I fear changing a core feature is going to through me into more chaos.
I’m just trying to make the best of what I’ve got. We’re both new at our roles and I don’t want to be trouble.
Yes, it’s 2014.
I do.
With that I'd hope you usually get more than single digit EB damage, between 2 dice and a +3
Until recently, there was some confusion about what could be stacked with eldritch blast. We’ve only played one session since that issue was cleared up.
But even if it's confusing for a bit, you'd probably be happier in the end if you switch subclasses or at least try to focus more on one thing
Yeah, I’ve been thinking of focusing more on melee with a side of spells.
With hex it would be 2d10+2d6+6, so an average of 24 damage assuming all hit. In reality it’s probably a lil less.
Sounds like you want a paladin tbh
Or a ranger perhaps
But hexblade are more melee focused than other warlocks
I asked this before, but this is 2014 rules correct?
I originally wanted to try ranger or rogue but was told there were one of each already in the party and a barbarian.
Yes. It’s 2014.
Ty
I didn’t want to do a cleric or a wizard since I thought they’d be too complicated for a newbie. I guess each class has its quirks.
Warlocks are also a lil complicated
I think one of the main problems is that I didn’t know how to build a character. I did try to look at a few guides but I didn’t understand the jargon.
There is a fair bit of jargon 🙂 But you don't need to learn that all at once, it'll come with time
To be fair, there were some issues with my character sheet. The DM had to delete the original and remake it but everything didn’t transfer over correctly and we’re slowly finding errors as we play. Since I mostly don’t know what the heck I’m looking at, I don’t spot the problems unless one of the other players points out that there’s an issue.
under 2014 rules, you'd want Pact of the Blade instead of the Tome, since Hexblade gets a special synergy to it.
I know that now. I chose Tome because of the tie in to my warlock patron and backstory. When I chose, I didn’t know there was an optimal choice.
That said, Hexblade (14) does in general have a lot of power that kinda relies on the weapon side of things. That said you could maybe end up going for a ranged weapon to get your range plus your weapon...
Right
In this case I'd say ask your DM for a mulligan, still
I was gonna suggest true strike but forgot the version
yeah, legacy true strike is sad... '24 true strike is really good
Agreed
I do appreciate the advice. Y’all have been very helpful!
How do u get a character sheet like how do I start making a character
There’s one in dnd beyond, you can also print it out or use a pdf
Ok thank u sm
I’ve semi planned out characters previously but kinda unsure on how to play and never have really figured it out yet. Anyways, I want to make a character with taekwondo as like the main combat flare. what would be a good option for the class?
Monk class
Monk, definitely. They specialise in unarmed strikes
Martial arts are their entire thing
Hiya im new to dnd and I haven't really played any other than like a 20 mins sorta session where a friend showed how it worked I just wanted to ask if there was a game session that was for me. Ive messed around and made a couple characters but I'd like to get more involved
thanks
Check out #find-a-game , that should give you the information you need to try and find a game
Ah thanks I just joined and didn't know where to go for it i looked and it seemed like other stuff was going on there so i didn't really know
If you're a hands on learner, recommend visiting your local gameshop as they can often host game sessions specifically for new players.
Library could also work
Library and school too
I'd also recommend checking out D&D adventurers league as there are quite a few adventure modules specifically designed to teach players the fundamentals.
One of my favorites being Spelljammer Academy
Hi there! I have a quick question but I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I am a newcomer!
I see the Rules Expansion Gift Set is on sale for Black Friday. If our group was going to be playing with the 2024 rules, would these work along side them well?
Most items on the marketplace specify if they work with 2024! But this bundle (and the items themselves) don't seem to have the "Works with 2024" banner for the products!
If it helps, the set includes: Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, Xanathar's Guide to Everything, and Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse.
So the 2024 updates are forward compatible - that is these older materials can be used with the 2024 updates with little issue or tweaks needed.
Does that help?
They should work with the 2024 updates just fine
It does! With a bit more research it seems like they came out in the 2020's. I guess it's a bit of an in between for the 2014 Rule Books and the 2024.
Thank you for your help. I plan to get them as a gift for the DM of our group, but wanted to make sure it would actually be usable!
So brand new to all of this. I made a dnd beyond account and I’m looking to join a game for learners. Do they exist?
I've seen a few "for beginners" games posted in our Looking For Game channels
Check #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community for possible games
Do note that spending some time and effort to lear the core game rules and mechanics (not memorize!) and how to create and use a character sheet will likely improve your chances of getting into a game (that and having a schedule that aligns well with the group).

Awesome! Thanks! I’ve kinda been playing on Grok. I know. Sounds weird. Lol.
Yes. The best places are one shots.
Specifically one shots from your local library or game shops for in person games.
And D&D's adventurers league for both in person and online.
As there are written modules out there specifically made for new players to teach them the fundamentals of play.
Hello there!
Hello, long time no see!
Ha!
Goooood morning afternoon evening, Nugget Dnd Player Helpline here, how can I help you today?
First off, love the Niffler pfp. Second, mostly looking to find a group to join as a warlock! Im new to playing, but have listened to D & D podcasts for a while!
Are you familiar with the rules?
If not, Read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have!
If yes, i recommend looking at #find-a-game to get information on how to start looking for a game online
-# also goated Niffler recogniser
Fantastic Beasts as a stand alone movie (the first one at least) was amazing
HI
Hello, Im absolutely new to DnD, i hv to read the rulebook first before i play, right?
It's a very useful to start with, definitely. Though don't worry you don't need a full knowledge of all the possible rules to get started. Generally knowing how to make your character, and how to make attacks, checks and saves is enough to get started (and generally understanding what your character can do, so read your abilities) 😛
Im somewhat new but got the basics and am looking for a group that will accept and newish player
so im organizing the game once all my friends are free, so i will probably be dm, any tips?
none of us hv ever played, it will be every1's first time playing DnD

Communicate with your players
Respect your players
Put passion into the game
Don’t overprep
Expand your vocabulary
Show, not tell (and use descriptive language that talks into all senses)
Have fun, no stress, and COMMUNICATE
Have a session zero
You don’t write a story, your party lives through one. Don’t prepare tales, prepare scenarios.
Try to know more than your players
COMMUNICATE
I just gave some tips
can u explain how not to overprep and what is session zero?
thx in advance
Don’t prep to the point that it feels like a chore, and don’t prep to the point that you’re predicting what your players will do hours before they do it. You want enough prep to get you through the session, or most of it, not the entire campaign.
A session zero is just a session where you can outline expectations, boundaries and important information at the table, and possibly for the players to try and collaboratively create characters
ok like a trial basically?
also so i can prepare (by writing) the background/setting? i dont know what my friends will create as characters nor what they will do (thts the whole game i think?)
actually i watched a lot of critical role this past month which got me here in the first place, plus i write a lot as a hobby so i hope i do well with the description part
thx 👍
Doesn’t necessarily have to be a gameplay session, it’s mostly just sitting down and having a talk
- You can definitely prep descriptions and settings, yes
I’d recommend doing so
plus i need dice, i dont hv the 20 face one, and one set will cost me, i feel too much for my countries currency
You can use online dice
yay
ic, ya i think my friends will love dnd then
i did see couple of them but im not familiar with DnD lingo
Hi, not sure if correct place to post.
Question on Books.
How does the Fizbans book of Dragons compare to 'The book of dragons' Michael Winter (on Amazon)
Do they over lap or?

I mean i had about 10hrs in Baldurs gate 3, does that count as basic stuff ? Along some youtube videos
Baldurs gate is inspired by dnd, so I’d revise that. Hol up tho, ill get my list
Have you learnt how to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat?

DnD is a TableTop RoleplayingGame, where players and a GM (Gamemaster, in DnD often called Dungeon Master) embark on a semi-conpetitive collaborative storytelling mixed with dice and game mechanics.
Hey, I’m new to D&D and looking for a group starting a campaign that needs an extra player. I’m in QLD AEST
Aside from here, you could also try LFG areas in sites like Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
can me and my friend play dnd without reading the book stuff
You can play a game, but if you want to play a game someone's made (like D&D) you'll have to learn the rules somehow. The Dyno post just above has video guides if that's any help.
To put into perspective. If the DM is going to be spending time to put together the adventure, out of courtesy the players should read about the basics of the games rules.
The basic rules are free online, you have very little reason not to try and learn.
Hi,
A few years ago i setup a character to play DnD with a friends, friend!
We never got to play though 🙁
I'm just wondering if anyone's able to help me play some DnD and learn more about the game? Been meaning to do this for a pretty long time now!
Thanks!

For learning the most up to date rules of the game you can find the free basic rules in the link above.
For playing dnd, you can look through posts in #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community .
I personally recommend starting with one shots. These are single session adventures that last 2-4 hours.
For that check out dnd adventurers league events here https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/1050208806006702081
You can learn about it at. #adventurers-league
The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. is anyone able to review my character sheet? This is my first time making one and my DM lives quite far away, so I've been trying to set it up myself
There's stuff I just know for sure I'm missing and will continue to miss
i learned just yesterday that I'd actually get 4 skill proficiencies
is a Barbarian a good class?
I'll say this it's a very magical world and you'll be the one class who cannot use magic
But is it a good class I'd say yes just know your role you're diving into
Watcha make?
a battle smith artificer rock gnome
Sounds flavorful enough
Artificers are very fun at dms discretion. Lots of roleplay ideas for inventions
kinda living on my own for a while so i have been putting investment in to magic stuff and then stealth and thievery stuff for survival
Well Maybe your dm will make you look for tools and other then that know magic
I'd definitely choose investigation for a artificer and possibly arcana
investigation and persuasion are granted by artisan
im thinking of doing arcana and sneak since i am so small and am granted thieves tools
could i send you what Ive got on my charater sheet?
youll have to open it in adobe acrobat I think
Well in a role-play world of you creating magic items and making them function. I'd ask for alot of arcana checks
You run your character how ya want but investigation and arcana checks are alot for a artificer i think.
I'd recommend the guidance cantrip as well
i thought i only get mending and prestidigitization
Well ya get another cantrip I think level 4-5.
Def choose guidance
Will help ya out with everything
what list do i have to choose from
Well as a battlesmith you'll want mending... presdigitation Is a top tier role-playing spell..
You are fine with those but I'd still recommend a attacking cantrip or guidance in the future
You are a artificer and they have a healthy list of cantrips
hello
also btw I'm thinking of a character that's quick but also uses a short sword
like a balanced out character
I don't know all the abilities like sharpshooter or smth so I would like help
Look through the classes in the free rules and pick one that sounds interesting to you.
Then refer to chapter 2 in the free rules which goes over the step by step process to creating a character.

Hi! I am new to dnd. If anyone has any tips or where to start, I'd appreciate it. Thank you 🙂
Learn what to do on your turns. Action, bonus actions, reactions. Learn what a opportunity attack is (first time I was ever downed) after that ask yourself what ya want your role to be. Then go find a race and class and background that fits that role.
Thank you
how do u make your skills
like i dont wanna make him op but dont know how roll or wtv
If you made the character in dnd beyond , feel free to post the link to the character and I can take a look at it.
Your dm will ask for the rolls. You just choose what your good at
Most common rolls will be stuff like perception/investigation
?tag new dice
Dice
Dice add randomness to the game. The 20-sided die (d20) is the most important one you’ll use. When the outcome of an action is uncertain, the game uses D20 Tests to determine success or failure. The higher your roll, the more likely it is that you succeed. The most common use for dice other than the d20 is to determine damage.
When you need to roll dice, the rules tell you how many dice to roll of a certain type, along with any numbers to add or subtract. For example, “3d8 + 5” means you roll three eight-sided dice, add them together, and add 5 to the total.
Survival. But as long as you specialize in at least one of them you'll be fine
I didn’t make it in dnd beyond because it doesn’t for free come with the artificer class
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1vQeEC7heqLv6Aczy5mmRkDEa5_3PfkI0/view?usp=drivesdk
open this in adobe acrobat if you wish to edit it
Hi
That pdf can’t be loaded on my end because it has so many extra art layers. Try using this https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/marketing/dnd_5e_charactersheet_formfillable.pdf
@dull pollen from what I could read it looks like you added the subclass too early. You don’t get access to a subclass until level 3 .
Using what I could read, I built an artificer in dnd beyond https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/156488967/QZifA0
Does character weight come into play or is it more up to the dms desecration?
Like if I'm playing a 400 pound loxodon would it be harder for player characters, npcs, and enemies to pick up or drag said character like trying to move the character out of danger if their unconscious or if the character is being taken away by a enemy
It would yes. A medium creatures default push/lift/pull weight is equal to 30 times their Strength score
wouldnt it also depend on the DM i mean mine doesnt really pay much attention to how big or tall a creature is
The DM may rule otherwise but the default is that creatures have a max carrying capacity and max weight they can push/pull/lift
thank you!
I would have to buy Tasha’s cauldron of everything I think to use dnd beyond
Oh it’s the standard character sheet
The one I used is programmable
Hey do any of u want to play
If you’d like to use this server to find a game check out #find-a-game for the instructions!
Cool.
Anyone available to assist with a first time character creation? I have the complete character sheet but i am sure it needs revision.
👍
Fighter 2024 players handbook weapon mastery question:
So level 1 you start out with 3 masteries. If I go into combat does that mean I can have a mastery on like lets say a greatsword, handaxe, and a javelin all at once or is it more of a you can long rest and swap which weapon I'd currently want to have trained for mastery between the 3. The wording says this for long rest Whenever you finish a Long Rest, you can practice weapon drills and change one of those weapon choices which i'd assume would let me swap one of the 3 for a different mastery i.e if I wanted to take javelin out of my mastery and change it for a dagger
Yeah, you'd have the ability to use the mastery properties of all the chosen weapons
so if you did pick Greatsword, Handaxe, and Javelin, then whenever attacking with any of those weapons, you can use the weapon's respective Mastery Property.
dang near no idea what im doing but if someone wants to run a slight game sometime lmk
someone slighty taught me the basics of rolling and such but i pretty much forget it
better at learning with others than by myself

when it comes to origins how does it work like would i add 1 to each of the ability scores listed
Assuming the updated rules:
Backgrounds have 3 associated abilities.
You can have your background ASI (Ability Score Increase) be +2 to one of your choice and +1 to another of your choice, or +1 to all three of them.
ahh so in a way you get +3 modifier and you choose wihich stat gets it
No - you get a +2/+1 or a +1/+1/+1
it's either +1 to three things or +2 to one and +1 to another
with the things getting the bonuses being the ability scores associated with the background
for example im a warlock with +2 in charisma i can make it +4 if i go with acoloyte as my origin
For example, the Soldier background has "Ability Scores: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution"
So someone with the soldier background would have had either +1 to Str Dex and Con, or +2 to one of those and +1 to another of those
You're looking at the modifier. The modifier is derived by the score.
With a modifier of +2 you have either 14 or 15 in the score. At most you get +2 here, so 16 or 17, which provides a +3 modifier.
and then +1 to either Intelligence or Wisdom, ye
great ty for clearing that up for me
3 points, to 3 specific abilities determined by the background, and you can't just to +3 to a single stat. So it's +2/+1, or +1/+1/+1
Can anyone help me get a general overview when it comes to creating your character and things like that

If I wanna find a group to play online, do yall do that here? I am experienced player, used to play on roll 20 once in a while. Where/how do you make friends and groups? ^-^
in terms of ligth weapons you can make an extra attack if you have 2 equipped correct
Check out #find-a-game for useful info about finding a game including instructions on how to use our Looking For Game channels.
@echo kelp oh, duhh. Thanks!
Not necessarily unless you have a class feature or a weapon mastery that allows an extra attack. For instance if you have proficiency with a weapon with the Nick property "When you make the extra attack of the Light property, you can make it as part of the Attack action instead of as a Bonus Action. You can make this extra attack only once per turn."
the Light property lets one innately use it to make an additional attack as a Bonus Action, however.
Ah yes
A weapon mastery feature, and thus proficiency in the weapon, is required to use the Nick Mastery Property, which is essentially an upgrade to how the attack functions
Thanks for the clarification!
Hey guys I'm new to DND I don't really know anyone who plays and I'd rather play in person than online anyone got any ideas?
For in person games, check for your local game and book stores, even local library. Sometimes schools and colleges have TTRPG groups/clubs.
Library, local games shops , and conventions are the best places to find in person groups.
For the more well known TTRPG conventions PAX unplugged is going to be worth looking into.
lets say a spell needs a material and somatic do i need to do both to cast or will somatic suffice
Somatic is a hand gesture that needs to be performed to cast the spell
Both
ik its just im reading the player handbook and its explaining the cost to perform spells and im just curious do you need to do everything the spell says like the gesture and use a component or just one works
It’s material AND somatic
Is pcgen still a good tool? I tried this back in 2017-18 I think I’m ready to get back to it
Are there any text campaign groups. I've seen a few groups but they all do VC and I'm not comfortable with VC with strangers
Very very few
I felt the same way starting out
Trust me, it’s not that bad
Sure, there’s some. We call it Play By Post, I’m in 1 rn

Wahzzup, doing well myself. I recommend checking out the #channel-guide just to know where to ask things and to stay on topic

Im thinking of starting a group of anyone wants to join. I have a server and everything almost set up. And my first campaign idea.
dont advertise for games here, keep it to the designated channels
What he said
can you purchase individual subclasses for dnd beyond? im pretty sure you can, but its very difficult to find
You used to be able to a couple of years ago, but not anymore.
If you want a particular subclass, you have to get the book it's in.
thats a bit stupid in my opinion, deters me from spending my money
You could save up or join a game with content sharing.
People definitely agreed with you when they made the decision to remove it. Alas, they have not reversed course.
The other option besides what Mr Smith said is to use the DDB homebrew creator to replicate a subclass you own in a physical book for use in your private DDB campaign.
thats what im attempting, not the easiest. and i dont think anyone in the campaign has what i want for content share unfortunately
but i might be incorrect
Hii
Hello, i downloaded the D&D Beyond app because i want to try playing this game since roleplaying sounds fun.
