If you have any questions, ask away
if someone (me) wer to ask you whene he could find all the basic information he would need to understand how to play dnd (D20 rolls, How combat works and how to fill everything on a character sheet), where would you tell him to find such information?
I’d tell him to check out the links in the bot I’m about toto activate lol
Well dang I forget how to lol
K well check the pins in this channel because my brain has deflated in the command lol

Right above, in the basic rules
Lol thanks. I’m still in vacation mode
Hey. Could a Shadow Monk ‘Shadow Step’ around space when NOT in combat.
Yes
Unless explicitly said otherwise, features which take any sort of action work both in and out of combat
Really? So, of an evening in a town, they could literally bounce down the street in and out of shadows?
Turns occur even outside of combat (they're simply not accurately tracked), and thus all actions are on the table
Yes
Oh…. I’m so taking that in my next campaign.
As it still works as a town would he in theory have to wait circa 6 seconds per step?
Correct.
*turn
You can take actions even outside of combat, but the timing of those actions are still locked.
Thanks all.
That sounds like so much fun.
I’ll need to do so more reading about being hidden/stealth after stepping.
Just finished listening to Exandria Calamity…. So…. Very hyped about DnD right now😀
Out of curiosity.
Are PvP events ever a ‘thing’ in DnD?
They can definitely happen, but most tables don't allow them (and many of us here recommend against it).
Understood.
Sorry. I did mean outside of a campaign.
Example : your campaign 6 characters vs another, or just entirely
Made up ones
The game isn't really designed for PCs to fight each other
Since PCs are usually built differently than monsters
It can be done, but it's not the assumption
Do events like that happen? Sure, but pretty rarely.
I assumed that’d be the case as I’ve not read anything about it but was curious.
In my experience, PvP happens because of 1. mind control or 2. ooc beef]
The former can indeed happen in game, the latter really shouldn't be allowed to happen in game
Oh, and 3. just greed for loot, which is either caused by 2. or leads into 2.
Yeah.
In my last campaign another player MCd me to use more of my heals.
DM was not happy but let me choose to reject or roll.
... Yeah, nah, I'd have not been cool with that. Nor, do I think, should any party be on board with it
Ironically…. I missed the following session and the ‘offending’ player died 😉
Thanks for the help this evening guys and gals.

Hi
Hello!
Hello
Good evening.
Welcome to the server!
Hellooo
How friendly
its so nice to see all these fellow players get along
in comparison to what i see in a game i play. (horrifying memories flash through that empty skull)
Welcome to the funhouse
ive not been here for long (also prety new to dnd) but i always enjoy when a comunity isnt toxic to less experienced players
🙂
Well, part of our bargain with the devil is making fresh sacrifices so-- I mean yeah, totes, buddy
Hello! First time making a character and I've never played DND but I'm so excited to give it a go! Just dropping by and saying hello
same also dropped by to say hello after join and getting used to the dnd community
Ooh so I'm making a character now named Chronk Goldring a down on his luck rogue with a gambling problem and a mother to take care of, I'm not to sure what I'm doing I won't lie lmao
Sounds like a good start! Have you read through the basic rules yet?
Most of that is backround stuff and story line
Most of the mechanics and in game stuff for rouge is very simple. they basically just have a bunch of proficiencys and stuff like that (which is basically a plus modifier u add to ability checks makeing it more likely you succeed) and sneak attack
Yes! And watched quite a few videos on it as well I've also played a bit of baldurs gate 3 so I "kinda" get the gist of it
Yeah I just wanna make a character I have a connection with and care about playing haha
Sounds like you're on the right track, then
but if I need to make a different character to fit a certain story that's fine too
where do you all gather? can i join? i have a coupple of sacrifi- i mean pelole who could be offer-i mean who could be tought how to play
I mean the basic idea u have should work for most games
All u need is to do the stats when ur in a game (there are multiple ways of doing them so u will probably have to wait ) and then make sure u have dexterity as your highest, not terrible constitution, one of the mental stats as your second highest (charisma would probably fit more for your character).
And u don't really need streanth
Yes charisma is one of the stats I plan on building around
Makeing it your second highest and being the face of the party is a good way to go with rouges
I heard it was a beginner friendly class thats why I picked it
You'll enjoy it, I think. Rogue is fun!
Fun, just... be mindful
Rogues have a reputation for getting into trouble for a very big reason
Hey is it allowed to ask if someone can check out my first chacter I somehow finished I wanna know if its legit or not
We have #character-discussion for that!
Alright thanks
What's the reason 💀
Sneaky sticky-fingered backstabbers tend to be sneaky sticky-fingered backstabbers
sooo... where do we gather to sacrifi- i mean teach pepole how to submit all worldly possesions to our lor- i mean teach them how to play dnd?
Guilty as charged
In here for new peeps, #character-discussion to talk about character ideas, and #find-a-game once you're confident enough to try playing
Don't forget #learn-to-play!
I was wondering what the most useful spells for a 5 level sorcerer is based on exploration and damage
#character-discussion would probably be a better channel, though you might get pointed to #optimization.

Okay imma ask a question here since it says newcomers and I’m definitely a newb.
Spell casting….components…
I feel like that’s gunna be a huge limiter.
Anyway around that? Some feat?
Or do I just stick with simple cantrips until my crew and I get enough money to go shopping?
Arcane Focus and Component pouch are items you generally get as a spellcaster as a starting item, which replaces any material components, except for ones with a specific cost, or if the spell would consume the required material
Meanwhile Verbal component simply requires you to be able to speak, and Somantic component that you have at least one hand free to perform gestures
Alrighty thank you.
So let me see if I get this right?
Correct me if wrong plz.
2024 Trickery cleric, wanting to cast hypnotic pattern….i use my holly symbol to help cast it.
So I no longer need my components correct?
Correct
Short answer: Yes your focus would fulfill all requirements for Hypnotic Pattern.
Long answer: Technically yes and no. You still need to fulfill the somatic components (gestures) of the spell since a spell focus by itself only fulfills the material component requirement of Hypnotic Pattern. However, as per the spellcasting rules on components, you may use the same hand to perform the material and somatic components as long as you have a free hand to access them.
Hello and good morning. At least I think it's morning.
Well it's gotta be morning somewehere at least!
It's about 3:20 am here.
So I guess that's kind of morning...
But some would still call it the middle of the night.
10:21 am here
Well good morning then.
i am new to D&D i never played it but i wanna try it is there a Rulebook i can read so i can understand the basics of the game
the main book you would want to look at is the players handbook. It explains the basic of dnd and provides you with the starting races, classes, subclasses, weapons and spells.
but i would start by looking at these links to get an idea of what dnd actually is and how it works, and it might help you understand better if you'll enjoy it or specifically what aspects of it you think youll enjoy more
okey thank you
Is beyond universally used? I'm wondering if I should just get into it right away if groups prefer it over physical books.
I wanna make it as easy as possible to get into games.
If I stumble into a group that uses it, I wouldn't really be able to play without it, right?
I think online groups prefer it because it easily stores all your character sheets in one place.
I won’t use it because I play mostly irl, have the books and don’t like the idea of paying the subscription, but it has it’s uses.
Depends, most I have found use Roll20 because it lets you make maps, but beyond also lets you make characters very easily. If you stumble into a group that uses beyond you will need it, so it is probably best to go there. Roll20 is a little difficult to make characters on so I would start on beyond and only go to roll20 if a group you find uses it.
i am curntly making my first character
and i dont realy understand feats, where do i write them? can i chose more than one?
anyone?
i fount out that you can only have one
ok, but still, where to i write them
Do you have a paper character sheet @spiral raptor
yhea
on paper or any digital tool you can use like D&D Beyond
the one from dnd beyond, 3 pages
There should be a section on the paper character sheet to write down the feats on
wait a sec, im going to send you the dnd beyond link and you can tell me where you see it, i just dont see it
And I thought that the paper character sheet is 4 pages not 3
The 2024 one is 2 pages because no one used the middle one, lol.
It is the character sheet I’m familiar with.
so where do you see the section where in supposed to write my feat?
i just cant find it
It’s on page 1 at the bottom right corner of the page
features and tratis?
Yes
but if feats are features, what dose it mean by traits?
I don’t think traits are rolled anymore
so they arent used?
Hey some guy just dm me asking if I were looking for a group but he isnt in this server any idea how he found me
I use DnD Beyond for character creation
what are cantrips?
@spice lion probably someone who is a member gave the person the information
Then why he stopped responding once I asked how he found me
you scared him
best to stay away and block them
go you!
Yeah no dm ask for age do they?
Block that immediately Mimi definitely not right
They are spells that don't use a spell slot to cast
:0
i am trying to play a dragonborn sorcerer, who is skilled in mele combat, has some experience with magic and is a deceptive criminal
what dose GP stand for? i am looking at equipment i can take as a lv one and i see GP everywhere
Gold Pieces
what can i use an arcane focus for?
The currency in DnD are copper, silver, gold and platinum pieces
ok, good to know
and what do i do with an arcane focus
Sorcerers arnt really the best in melee combat due to not having much hp
U can use it to cast spells that requires a matirial to cast that doesn't have a cost specified
if im not gon aplay sorcerer then i shouldednt chose it, right?
Play what you will be comfortable playing as
i truly dont know... 3:
Bladesinger?
Warlocks and palidins are good for having magic and the ability to use wepons (there are a few more)
Sorcerers should stay back and cast spells from a distance
should i chose warlock? i want to have strong mele but also have the option to leann back on offensive and defensive spells if nececery
i do want mele to be my strogest
Palidin should be your best option
can a paladin be a criminal (my backround :3)
Yes any character can be a criminal
yeppie :3
There are thieves in DnD
Warlock would probably be better for this
U could have pact if the blade and the eldritch blast as a back up
ok i will chose warlock, (i dnt know what everything dose im just readong if dnd beyond)
I think you should get some help with your character sheet @spiral raptor
wdym?
They don’t have the time to help everyone out here with it
who is "they:?
where should i ask for help then? is there a character server?
ih wait nvm i see one
is it #character-discussion ?
Yes
kk byyy :3 till next time!
It’s not the mod job to teach people they are here to “moderate” the server keep everything nice and organised
Hey everyone, new to D&D. Thinking of going with Beyond and the Core Book set. I take it Beyond is the way to go, although Roll20 is popular as well. I’m looking to have as few apps as possible so I’m thinking Beyond. Is there a strong community with Beyond? Or is everyone on Roll20 and other apps?
yeah Beyond seems the way to go. im thinking of getting both digi and physical copies of the core book set. should i just get digi and the Master subscription? im thinking of starting or joining a community
They both have their pros and cons but I think beyond is the more popular for D&D.
If you have the money for it yes @timber wigeon
If you are not going to play in person, the actual books are not needed at all but if you like collecting books or prefer to read a physical book and not digital then go for it
There's an online version of d&d? I had no idea.
That will largely depend on your group and style of game you’d be looking for. For the most part, D&DBeyond is a digital toolset. Most players use it to host their character sheets online, though it does have some functionality for other aspects of play. Its forums are a decent group-finding tool and can also host text-based games. It also has Sigil, a Virtual Tabletop (VTT) that facilitates play via battlemaps, die rollers, etc though it’s often considered alright compared to similar options.
Roll20 is somewhat in the same boat. I find the character sheets UI worse but the integrated VTT better than Sigil. However, it is not mobile or mobile-browser friendly (it works just poorly). It also has functionality to play TTRPGs other than D&D if you ever want to branch out into the hobby as a whole. In my experience with Roll20 we used it for a VTT and used 3rd-party plugins to connect it to D&DBeyond which hosted our character sheets
cool thanks guys. ill think about getting both digi and physical copies as well as the Master subscription
what is homebrew?
Broadly, anything unofficial (not published by Wizards of the Coast, D&D’s owner)
Homebrew isn’t recommended for new players
ah ic
It can be very difficult
This includes but isn’t limited to:
- Rule changes, additions, or removals
- Custom new content (e.g. classes, feats)
- Unearthed Arcana / playtest content (things made by WotC for 5e but not officially published, typically to preview or get feedback on potential future content)
okay. ill just stick to Beyond then. thanks guys, been very helpful
Ok good luck to you @timber wigeon
What client do most people use to play online? TTS?
Foundry,Roll20, Owlbear Rodeo
Oh I was way off then lol, thanks!
There are several more
Or just Discord voice chat
Typically one would use a few tools to play. Using solely discord is good for text-based or theatre-of-the-mind based games.
I’ve noticed that theater of the mind isn’t used much anymore
It’s actually fun to use
Yeah it is a lot rarer
I'm trying to find a local group, but online games may be a great way to get started I think. Will look into how people organize that stuff. Thanks all.
I don't use theater of the mind for combat unless it's super simple, but my only online game is super roleplay focused anyway.
There are plenty of servers out there to join and games to play
Back in the day if we didn’t have a map drawn out on graph paper we use theatre of the mind
This is way before computers
I have the joy of a dry erase mat.

Aside from here, you could also try LFG on Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
We didn’t have that either
Only chalk boards
Or paper
And we actually had to look through the books for answers to questions that we didn’t know
Now it’s a lot easier
I think players and DMs should know how to play DnD both ways
I agree I started as a player and am now the forever DM but I can play in both roles
The legends of this game call the way it’s played now the lazy way
I believe that you will learn more about DnD the original way that it was played than now
If you notice that on Critical Role Matt Mercer and the others still look up answers in the books instead of using DnD Beyond
And they roll physical dice
Would dm’s be willing to take on a brand new player? I am seriously interested in playing but would like some guidance since none of my friends play.
Yes most DMs will take new players
We were all new once.
Games will often note if they accept new players, so look out for that.
I don’t mind having new players on my server
I actually encourage it
I enjoy teaching new players
Not many people on here can say that they have played every single edition of DnD
I have
There's some older editions I would love to play and some I just don't care for.
Thank you all for the encouragement I feel a lot better now but now I’m struggling to post to #looking-for-dm I filled out the form and pressed submit but nothing is happening
When you typed the command, do you do so in a text channel on the discord server (like this one)?
Typing it in a DM to dyno won't work for example
I did not but I will try that now I didn’t even think about that I’m sorry
I love using theater of the mind for as much of my game as possible. It is so much more fun to me.
But with that being said, I can see it not being as fun with those that struggle more with getting a clear mental image of what they're trying to imagine.
So me and my wife want to get into dnd and i like to prepare as best as i can on my own before i Look for a Group
What would u say is something i should Look up before joyning a Session to make the life of my DM easier 🙂 the only Thing i know about dnd that i Thing i might enjoy it

I'm looking through the joinable campaigns and I have a quick question. Are the session times autocorrected for different time zones?
Not necessarily. But if it has a box around it like this:
<t:1753370366:F>
Then it's auto corrected.
ok thanks. I was wondering what that highlighted box was
that's a really cool function.
so if you're behind full cover you can still lean and fire, right?
So if two sides have two archers, each behind fulll cover, they can't target each other?
Not as long as they both have full cover. But one might lean out to gain three quarters cover and take the Ready action to fire when they have a shot.
Heya

Ah alr
You have a good start so far choosing paladi
I might not know the classes well but 8 do know isekai and my few share of Greek mythology and monsters from all kinds
Sweet that's a good start. Alot of GMs use nearly every resource available so mythology, myths it's all possible
The knowledge 8 have hsould be useful then
Hi, how can i insert a custom species;w;
That would be homebrew, which we HIGHLY recommend that new players avoid using or making
Playing or DMing?
Hey, I'm brand new to dnd, and while I have a huge interest in the game, I've never actually had the opportunity to play lol, so I was wondering if somebody might be able to point me in the right direction? Anything at all would be helpful 😭

hi
It’s hard to find a game as a new player lol
Hello, I am LFG for people who want to play online F2P on roll20 dm me if interested. Looking for DM and players currently
Yeah it is. Keep at it! Eventually you'll find a group. In the beginning it's best to try out a few different ones and see what clicks.
Or, rather, who clicks. It's not unlike dating in that respect.
how can i put a message in the looking-for-dm chat or am i being daft? 😅
#find-a-game explains how you can post a game - it involves a command
perfect thank you
how does artificer spell casting work?
Mechanically, almost identical to normal spellcasting.
It's just flavored as utilizing magic items that you create (or something similar) to get the effects of your spell.
do i have to hold thieve's tools? or do i not
You must have a spellcasting focus - specifically thieves' tools or some kind of artisan's tool - in hand when you cast any spell with this Spellcasting feature (meaning the spell has an "M" component when you cast it). You must be proficient with the tool to use it in this way
i'm confused about this
For example, you can say "I cast fireball by taking out a volatile potion and throwing it at the enemy", but in reality there's no potion. It's cast exactly the same way a normal fireball is cast.
Yes, indeed. You must be holding a focus on order to perform spells, no matter what the focus is (thieves tools, Smith's tools, etc).
The tool is like a wizard's wand.
so if i want to use booming blade i have to hold it?
You couldn't use Booming Blade with a two handed weapon, correct.
You would need to hold the weapon in one hand and hold an Artificer focus on the other.
i think i understand a bit of it now
Well, that's how it works at level 1 anyways. At level 2, you gain the Artificer Infusions feature, which changes how "Tools Required" works
would you enlighten me?
Any item that has an artificer infusion on it will count as a spellcasting focus for an artificer, which means they can hold that instead of a set of artisan's tools
so for example, if you are holding a greatsword that you have put Enhanced Weapon on, then that is a spellcasting focus for you, AND it can be the material component for booming blade
oh my
What VTT would most people say I should I get first?
Been looking to join a campaign but half require vtt…I would like to join cus I believe it’ll help with my immersion or setting the scenery better for me since I’m fairly new to DnD
Perhaps top three VTT?
Thankfully, most VTTs are completely DM side. Your DM will pick which one you're using, and they will have everything set up for you.
Which VTT is irrelavent, they all serve the same purpose. It should just be visual representation for battles, most of the gameplay should be in your imagination, in your mind's eye
For example, if your DM is using the Foundry VTT, you don't need to prepare a single thing. They send you an invite address, and then you just join and you're good to go instantly.
I'm hesitant to rate them because it will depend on what you need. How about this:
Owlbear Rodeo: Low complexity, freemium
Roll20: Medium complexity, freemium, storefront for adventures, discord integration
FoundryVTT: High complexity, premium, storefront for adventures, community modules
Bonus: D&DBeyond Maps: Low complexity, subscription, storefront, DDB integration
(also these are the ones I've tried, there are more like Fantasy Grounds)
Welcome to D&D!
Okay but don’t I have to pay to play? Or is that just for the DM? And we play within their realm?
I’m asking mainly for money wise. I’m okay dropping cash but…ain’t trying to invest a whole bunch right out the gate ya know?
Thanks to those helping me btw!
That depends on the group. Some groups are paid, others aren't. Read the group descriptions to find out.
Okay true true. Read about that
You dont have to pay for anything within the VTT that your DM already has.
Assuming they share access
Thank you.
I cant give much advice, because im 90% an in person DM/player, and when I use online VTTs I do the absolute bare minimum because its a pain to me.
Theater of the mind hits hard. 🙃
Respect
And when it comes to "realm": yes, generally you play within that groups world and that world may not share any similarities with other worlds.
But there are "settings" (like the Forgotten Realms, Greyhawk, Dragonlance and Eberron) that are like a "template" for a DM to run their game in and make it their own.
There are setups where several DMs might run a shared world together, but that's more rare.
And worth noting that even if you play in the "forgotten realms" for 3 different DMs, those are all 3 most likely different worlds with some different lore to some degree.
How does artisan's tools work? Like for example Alchemist supplies
@fossil shale
You can read about them here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/equipment#AlchemistsSupplies50GP
They might help you with various challenges that you encouter during the adventure.
They're also cool to use during down time!
Playin
I just don’t want to do like a….uhhh? Solo text run? Or text by play?
Would like to voice or screen visuals, doesn’t have to be crazy either! That’s why I was curious on VTTs.
In person games seems phenomenal too but hard for me to uhh attain? Figured I’d join this discord and play online
If the game is pbp (play by post - text play), it will be noted in the game description. Most online games from my experience make use of voice chat as a baseline.
Thank you all for the clarity
Online play is a great gateway. Even if it's never been as enjoyable as playing in person for myself. Its way better than not playing D&D.
For me it has upsides and downsides both.
Wsg chat:3
can I put ray of sickness in a crossbow bolt? im level 9 artificer
I'm not sure I fully understand the question, but there is no game mechanic in 5e to put a spell effect "in" a projectile or piece of ammunition
No all games in #looking-for-players are free, roll-20 different story
Thank you!
That's not correct. This server has a separate channel for paid games: #paid-looking-for-game so every game in the normal Looking-for channels should be free. If you find any that are not, they are breaking server rules and you can alert the moderation team
Good evening, would you be so kind and explain every class role in dnd

Welcome (again). The bot post above has lots of helpful information for you. If you click on the "Basic Rules" link (under the Quick Links section) you can see the full description of all of the classes there
Gah
Put super, super simply, classes can be broken down into 3 general groups:
- Martial classes (which like using weapons to fight)
- Fighter, Barbarian, Rogue, and Monk
- Spellcasting classes (which use magic to fight)
- Wizard, Cleric, Warlock, Sorcerer, Bard, and Druid
- Half-Caster classes (which use a mixture of weapons and magic in combat)
- Paladin and Ranger
You forgot artificer? 🥺
I had a feeling someone would mention it
. Because it isn't included in the free basic rules, and because it's a little more complicated than other classes at a glance, I try not to bring it up for newcomers unless prompted.
Artificer isn't one of the core classes of the game, so we generally avoid discussing it in the newcomers channel. Though if someone has a specific question about it, we're perfectly happy to answer those questions
Mb it was the first class I played
Good on you for that. It's my favorite class personally. But it does require just a little bit of extra work to learn all the game mechanics and options for it. It probably the most complex class in the game
Definitely when having to contend with the illusory rules that are created by public consciousness about the class
Oh yeah. I'll hold myself back from ranting about that here 🤣
@bitter void that isn’t allowed
Yeah I realised it wasnt
I am BRAND NEW to dnd, i kinda got a understanding of the game but could someone help me ACTUALLY understand how to play?
Hi! I've been a DnD player for about two years now and I know some of the basics to playing it through the DnD Beyond app. I am on a short hiatus with one of the campaigns right now but I'm looking forward to meeting some new people and get to join a campaign that I'm interested in!
Jibbin check out the pins on this channel for great info links
Angel glad to hear you’ve been playing and still loving it
Oh my name is Sarah actually irl but thank you!

Heyo! I’m new to dnd is thereeee a specific way for me to start?
Thank you!
I think you just have to find a DM and a couple of players.... but i could be wrong as im new too xD
Hahaha got it! Is there a specific book for me to learn about some stuff? Cuz from what I saw in stranger things they used a book to know about the vale of shadow
I think thats the player handbook and monster manual... i am almost possitive they will be online
Finick check out the pins on this channel for great info links

U cared enough to answer so that means a lot hahaha😂
we are in the same boat so thought id help where i could xD
You can start with the Basic Rules on D&D Beyond (one of the links in the Dyno bot). It's free so it's a good place to start. Then you can graduate to the Players Handbook for more additional player choices and content. The Monster Manual is kind of what it says on the tin - it's a reference of creatures to populate the world with. And the Dungeon Master's Guide has tips and guidelines for building a world and adventures, and running the game
Got it! Thank u!
You only really need to read the players handbook as a player tbf
I prefer when my players don't have the monster manual memorized back to front
Makes it a real discovery when they figure out what's weak to what
Yeah totally. The PHB is the most necessary one. The other two are kind of more for DMs
AL is the main organized play for 5th edition. It has standardized rules for rewards, etc so that the characters are portable
would solo play be viable as a new player or would it be more hassel then its worth
Completely different game that way
D&D isn't made for solo play. There are other ttrpgs like Ironswon that are.
ahhhhhhhh ok

If you want an introduction, follow these links
I've already read a lot of it and am hoping I've got the basics sort of down
In that case, my tips are:
- Remember that DnD is a cooperative game. There is no winning or losing, only having fun.
- For making characters, remember that this is a team game. Don't make characters that avoid teamwork or try to antagonize others.
- This is a social game, so be prepared to meet many different people. If there is a player causing problems, don't be afraid to raise your concerns to your DM. If you are having issues with your group as a whole, it might be better to find a new group
Thank you
Is there a list of stuff that I should have for playing for the first time
Can someone explain to me the difference between a sorcerer and a wizard? I would assume warlocks use some form of dark magic, and i saw that it said sorcerers use innate magic, but would that not apply to wizards as well? Or can anyone use magic with proper study?
Dice and a character sheet, both of which can be found on the internet
Wizards are sages who dedicate their lives to study, sorcerers are born with magical abilities
Is it possible for you to give me an example of abilities a sorcerer might have that wizards do not, and vice versa?
I can try!
sorcerors have the ability to use sorcery points to regain spell slots among other things. they also regain some spell slots on short rests, majority of spell casters dont.
Yeah, no turns out I know nothing about magic.
sorcerers know their spells and can just pick whatever they want from the spell lists relevant to their level, whereas wizards have to transcribe spell scrolls they find into their spellbook to learn them. their spell list is just a list of spells they are allowed to use at their level
Ah alright interesting. Im curious though wouldnt any class be able to be a sorcerer? Since its innate magic theyre born with i would imagine not much time or training would need to be invested aside from control.
And thank you both for the help!^
hey so sorry if this may be a dumb question but how exactly do we find groups when are fully new to dnd? its been years since i played(and even then that was very little), i did read through the lfg faq but i am still a bit lost!
uh find a group atfter uh youve been playing- uhm im also pretty new im sorry ><
Roll20 is a pretty good resource I hear, I play with friends, so not much of a help here
i was hoping to find a group/campaigns that are with fine new players and im definitely a bit lost for that
heres what you need to know on that topic: magic in dnd is the result of the Weave - its basically the threads of magic itself.
wizards spend years learning how to interact with and control the weave. sorcerors have the innate ability to tap into the weave. paladins and clerics channel the magic of the weave through oaths and faith. druids and rangers attune to nature and the parts of the weave that control it. bards play with the weave through arts to control it. So not every class can be a sorceror because of the way access to the weave works, but all those classes can connect with the weave in some way
Ah okay i think i understand a bit better. (Or at least ill pretend to for now 👀) thank you for the info though i appreciate it you taking the time to help^ hopefully ill be able to slip into a campaign soon, and i’d like to be somewhat competent when i do. xD
youll be fine, just be somewhat prepared and go in with a good attitude and you'll be perfectly fine
Ive always got a good attitude… ya know except when people bother, talk to, interact with or breathe near me. <.<
Other than that the best B)
Im joking >.>.. mostly

Also, Sorcerers come in many varieties. Some get to be sorcerers via having a Draconic Bloodline, as dragons are inherently powerful beings with a potent connection to the magic of the world. (A dragon may not be a swirling maelstrom of pure magical energy, but they definitely have power and effects)
Some have magic from Storms. Some have magic from Wild Magic, be it a mishap with getting exposed to a magic storm or a jaunt in the feywild or something. There's even Aberrant Sorcery, there's Clockwork Sorcery, there's Divine Soul, there's a lot of different avenues for the sorcerous origin of how someone has magic that is integral to their being.
For instance (also very new player) I heard about a subclass of sorcerer called bladesinger, who channels thru dance and their blade, it sounded super cool and so here I am, about to ask about finding a super low level game to get into to test the waters lol
Sorcerers get Sorcery Points as said otherwise, but a very special thing indeed - Metamagic. Certain little powers that cost points that they can use to, say, reroll some dice that rolled low on damage, make a spell last longer, make a spell have longer range, be able to subtly cast a spell, be able to reroll a spell's attack, but most notably, Quicken - cast it as a Bonus Action instead of an Action. (Think of the BA as a... minor action, as opposed to a literal bonus action. Wonky wording, yes.)
This kind of thing, a sorcerer can do to near-any spell they have as a Sorcerer.
Other classes don't get to mess with them as much or as easily or as widely.
Wizards get a fireball and it works as is. A Sorcerer might get to choose to reroll some damage one time, cast it from further away, or cast it as a BA instead of the main Action.
Wizards get a Spellbook, and if they find spellbooks of other wizards, or scrolls of spells that also happen to be on the wizard spell list (such as finding a scroll of Lightning Bolt, which can be scribed and prepared by Wizards, whereas Cure Wounds isn't in the same boat), then they can scribe those spells down with a little time and money. Each time they finish a Long Rest, they can prepare a new list of prepared spells. Going to hell, or fighting a fire elemental cult? Ditch the Fire damage spells, grab the ones that work, Psychic damage and Force damage instead.
A Sorcerer gimmicked up with fire spells will suffer when fighting a fire cult or devils. A Wizard can change up their list each morning, studying from their book.
Bladesinging is a subclass for Wizard, not Sorcerer.
If you want to find a game, best bet is looking at #find-a-game to get started
weird question but which is better or easier to play for a beginner player? Sorcerer or Wizard?
hi
Both are on pretty similar paths of complexity, both being powerful spellcasters.
Wizard is more about managing a big selection of spells, while sorcerer is about making the most of fewer spells.
I'd just pick the one you feel most interested in and start learning how it works by reading the class.
does that mean sorcerers have more cantrips or is it the lateral
Sorcerers do happen get more cantrips. Overall 1-2 more than wizards in normal progression, so it isn't a big difference.
The bigger difference is that wizards have a spellbook that contains a bigger spell selection than sorcerers, from which they have to pick the ones they prepare for each day. Sorcerers on the other hand always have all of their spells ready, but have a smaller overall selection.
ahhhh i see !!
I’ve been in the server for like a year and I think I haven’t actually played dnd once lol
That actually makes quite a bit of sense. So wizards are more diverse in the fact that they can use essentially whatever they have the will and patience to learn, although it would be static so to speak (as in they wont be able to alter the spell much) However sorcerers would be majority stuck to what they know, but can do what they know exceedingly well. Be it fire magic etc etc. Correct me if im wrong though^
It can be hard to find a group and the hobby also has plenty of play-adjacent media that might be interesting. I think quite a few people are probably in a similar boat as you.
To a degree, yes. Sorcerers also get slightly more flexibility as they can turn slots into sorcery points, and vice versa, if they want to do metamagics on all of a few spells, or if they just want to not do metamagics and do a lot of basic spells.
hi, im new to dnd. Can anyone help me where or how i can start or join to play?
Do I always have to pay to join a game?
If you're looking for a game to join, check out #find-a-game which contains instructions
And there are both free and paid games. #looking-for-players only has free games
Adding what the other person said
There are alot of rules on dnd beyond that u can look up
This is a complecated game so knowing the basics before being in your first group is good
Also if there's a game shop near you there might be someone running a game in there
Bi
Welcome to D&D!!!!
Mannnn it'd be nice to make money off of D&D, but I dont think I personally could ever charge anyone to play. I have so much fun playing that I'd feel like im cheating getting paid for it. 😂
Paid DMing is more for people looking for a certain kind of experience instead of just playing at all.

The biggest advantage to paid games I’ve personally seen is the level of commitment to a set schedule is unmatched. I’ve been doing it for a total of 18 sessions across 2 campaigns and no one of the 11 people has missed yet. My free campaigns have almost always 1-2 people per session not show up which sometimes causes cancellation all together
I guess everyone's experience is different, but I just dont personally ever deal with the commitment/scheduling issues I hear about.
But if I kept hitting those issues, I can see how people having to pay a bit to play would make them want to actually be there lol.
Ironically, I've had way more issues with scheduling online games than irl ones.

Sharing my boi. What class do you think is the most suitable for him :0?
I'm going to be straightforward here: the skills and weapons list here are simply not compatible with a level 1 DnD character.
In DnD, a player character starts off pretty weak, and with no fancy items or abilities.
Slowly, over the course of the adventure, you level up and gain new abilities based on your class. Your DM might also reward you with fancy items or abilities as well, but that's not a guarantee.
How do I choose a race, like I wanna be a druid but theres so many races and idk what should I look out for when choosing a race
Pick whatever you find coolest or most fun! A player's species usually doesn't have very much mechanical impact on their class.
so its just choosing a look?
your race/species doesnt have a big impact on how powerful your character is overall, so pick whatever you think looks/sounds cool
There are some abilities that each species has, but you'll likely be relying on your class abilities far more often than any of the ones your species gives you.
Using the rules introduced in Tasha's, you can allocate your stat points for flexibly so picking a species often comes down to what you want to play and if their bonuses look appealing to you,
In the current rules your species doesn't even matter for your ability scores anyway!
Well i just wanna ask what role will he be most suitable
To achieve some of those skills at a much higher level, I'd recommend Sorcerer.
I see, thanks :)
Some says i need to be a warlock some said sorcerer or druid
I just got a lil confused
All three could work, theoretically. Out of the three, Sorcerer seems to fit the most, to me.
I know you're really excited to play with this very specific idea of what your character is capable of doing, but I just hope that you understand that DnD isn't a free-form roleplay game. It's not a game for taking an OC with their own abilities and just plugging that character right into a game.
Yeh yeh, I understand :3
Question- can I cast infuse item and just not give the magic any direction?
just, full rexplode larp?
Hm. Lots of clarification needed here.
If you're referring to the Artificer's infusion feature, you have to pick one of the options for an infusion from the list. You can't just explode the item
Repulsion shield it is
wait, no, replicate item. Just need to find an explosive that counts as magic.
thank you!
Rexplode is a character from the Invincible TV show that can cause items to explode by touching them, so Catfish is asking if they can use their infusions to make bombs
i’ve asked before to mixed responses, but haven’t got anywhere. Running in person D&D session 1 next week, i’ve been using a website as reference, but do own the core books.
I don’t have a dm screen yet but can get one.
Do people use a tablet for reference? a Chromebook? I want something small and portable if so.
Do i still want a DM screen if i have one?
do i just use a notepad?
help lol
You might get more answers in #dm-discussion but I'm a big fan of hard copy personally
ty
So I usually have the adventure I'm running, plus a few cheat sheets and then at least the PHB for extra reference if needed

Hii im new to dnd and im fascinated by what i have been told about it. How can i start?
Hello!! Welcome #looking-for-dm #looking-for-players #paid-looking-for-game #looking-for-community is a good place to look for games! If u need help with character creation I’d be glad to help!!
how do i create a character?
Alright sense your new id say first and foremost go on the d&d beyond website or download the app
It’s a great character creation tool that makes the process super easy
If you wanna use a paper character sheet though that’s cool to! Makes it a little bit harder but gives you more options cause u have to pay for a lot of character options on dnd beyond sadly
Nothing to big tho js some species and class options
hey im new to dnd and im not sure how to go about character creation or joining a campaign and im unsure where to start. could someone give me some advice?
Hello! #looking-for-dm #looking-for-players #looking-for-community #paid-looking-for-game #learn-to-play are all good places to start! As far as character creation goes dnd beyond the website or app are going to be great places to make characters once ur logged in if u need any more help with making characters or joining a campaign don’t hesitate to ask!!
ahh gotcha
Btw I love ur pfp
thanks
my main issue with charecter creation is that im not sure if im doing it "right"
Wdym?
one sec
im not sure if this would be considered balanced
also at a loss for anything related to background
Ur privacy settings prevent me from seeing ur character sheet
Level one, class, background, species. Use the standard array method to generate your beginning ability scores.
one second
thats another thing
the stats confuse me
Once u choose ur class there’s a little thing right at the top that tells you the stats you should prioritize
What class are u playing?
Or plan on
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
The bot post above will explain it a little more
Oooohhhh awesome chose! I love a good warlock however they are a bit complicated so u might have some confusion with some of their stuff but for warlocks your gonna wanna prioritize charisma
Choice*
also try the link again
Yeah it looks like you didn’t use any of the official stat generation methods
Uhmmm yes that’s a little unbalanced I don’t think u should have almost three maxed out stats at level 1 haha 😅
figures
what would be "balanced"
Standard array.
I would stay away from rolled stats just stick with standard or point buy
yeah thats what im doin rn
8, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15 in the order you choose.
The order is the most important part to learn about.
For warlock I’d probably go 15 charisma 14 con 13 12 twelve for wisdom and intelligence those are interchangeable and then 10 dex 8 strength
gotcha
i did low con because i like the thought of a glass cannon type character
im unsure if that is a horrible idea or not
Spell casters are already very squishy so your gonna get that effect anyway a higher con just makes it a little more comfy
understood
welp i feel like im done revising my prior mistakes
so what now?
@cobalt basalt I already created ny character how do i join a campaign?
You've got an invocation there that gives you no benefit.
what?
ur characters pretty good now I’d say the only thing I’d change around is maybe message and unseen servant as they aren’t the besssttt spells on the game but u can definitely still use them so replacing those id say is completely optional but just know that warlocks benefit from spells that can be upcasted (wich just means makes them stronger for more recourses) because all their spells are automatically upcasted to the highest level available to them
Eldritch mind? You don't seem to have any spells that use concentration.
i see
I’d say if possible any warlock should take the invocation “agonizing blast” cause it gives a ton of extra damage
i cant find it in the spells tab
is it somewhere else or does it have some prerequisite
It’s an invocation not a spell
It just makes your eldritch blast deal more damage
How come?
Read #find-a-game for info on using the server’s group-finding channels.
I don’t know who told u that but eldritch blast is like the bread and butter of a warlock most invocations directly effect eldritch blast
so i took eldritch blast and now i cant find agonizing
i feel like im looking in the wrong tab
Eldritch blast is a spell. You'll want that.
Agonising is an invocation. It pairs well with eldritch blast.
gotcha, but i cant find agonising
Hmm maybe u get that at later levels. What invocations does it say you’re able to take?
Hi new to dnd 🙂
armor of shadows, pact of the blade tome and chain. and eldritch mind
Helloooo welcome ^^
helloo
Just starting thinking about making a ranger wood elf 🤔
2024 pacts are invocations instead of its own feature
Ok so pact of the chain gives you a little pet that you can control and it does some pretty good damage and can help with stuff pact of the tome gives you more spells and pact of the blade I belive lets u switch out the damage of a melee weapon for a another type of damage
Hi new here and love that can take Pact of Blade and Tome together
tome seems interesting
Agonizing Blast has a level 2+ requirement on it in 2024 as well, which is why you’re not seeing it at the moment
Ah
Right, my slightly fuller attention is available. Apologies breadman, won't have access to agonising until level 2. My mistake.
Hi sorry I have no idea what I’m doing right now 😅

would tome be good?
Thanks so much I’ll look
Good for extra spells, valuable for warlocks.
Yes tome is very good it gives some extra spells and at later levels u can upgrade it
K I’m even more confused 🤣 my problem is that I don’t have a group.
Fair
also is elementalist any good?
is that a spell?
If you feel you have a decent grasp on the rules or just want to dive right into group finding the channel to do so is #find-a-game which contains all the info you need on using this server to find a group

I joined some days ago and have found some groups, I just didnt have free time to join them when they had the sessions
elementalism?
yep
Thanks
uhhh its alright

Elementalism’s utility is as good as your creativity and the situation you find yourself in.
exactly
Do you remember the last time you learned something new? You didn't absorb every nuance and detail all at once! That's not how we learn!
So there are multiple ways in, to my mind.
- You could watch some games played on YouTube or Twitch just to see what it's like in action. (Podcasts also work for this purpose.) Don't expect your home game to look like a professional production, though!
- Or play the demo.
- Check out #learn-to-play.
- Or you could read through the Free Rules one chapter at a time.
- Or you could watch the Handbooker Helper videos (or WASD20's Rules School) on YouTube. Caveat: the videos are for the 2014 rules. The fundamentals are pretty much the same between 2014 and 2024 rulesets, though.
- Or you could sign up for a learn-to-play session through the virtual weekends linked in the server's Events channel.
Take it at your own pace. No one eats an elephant in one bite!
Thank you!! I’ve played twice before but never a full campaign and I watch videos often! But I joined here in hopes of finding an online group to play with
i see you chose tencers floating disk i would probably replace that with witch bolt if u do that you will have a great mix of good combat and utility spells
cant. something prevents it
strange
also i already swapped disc for poisen detection
awesome!
Do you have a group yet?
nope 😦
well with that i think ur characters pretty good! u got some good stats spells and invocation ^^
So an important thing that gets left out of many discussions is that any character you build outside of a group is really for practice, learning what choices are available and such. I wouldn’t get too hung up on the specifics of spells or anything until you have a group and you know 1) what’s allowed and 2) who else you’re playing with and what they bring to the table. Shoring up what others lack is often a good route to a fun game.

btw i would suggest watching jocats a crap guide to dnd series he explains alot of the stuff you need to know really well
some videos covering spells are also good i would suggest pact tactics or zaktact
and then dnd shorts covers lots of stuff
oh and u cant forget you might be a dnd he explains alot of subclasses love him
those are some good youtbers to watch if u wanna learn more
youtubers*
if ur looking for something local sometimes dice shops game shops librarys or people on facebook premote their campaign
and ofcourse you can aways just ask friends
if u know any friends that dm u could ask if they have a slot open for a player
gotcha
also lots of people who play over zoom
is there a difference between dnd Armor class and pathfinder armor class?
I am only marginally familiar with Pathfinder, but I believe they work the same
Kinda but not really pathfinder and d&d are two systems
so im making a steampunk campaign as a starter, any ideas or opinions?
Eberron is an official setting that is very similar to Steampunk!
Might want to look into checking the book out! Eberron: Rising from the Last War
Even comes with a class called the Artificer
is it a book?
until i can make some more money, thats not an option. thanks tho
So you could look into some Eberron books (like nealen suggest), but also have you watched any steampunk media?
You could turn it into a setting
what is this setting thing?
A setting is the backdrop of a dnd game
Like Middle Earth is the setting of Lord of the Rings
One could set a dnd game in middle earth if they wanted a high fantasy game
Just like you might set a game in… (idk a steampunk work so) Warhammer 40k for a science fantasy game
Oh I thought you meant the settings. I use dnd beyond and I was like “there’s a settings?”
Oh, no not that, sorry
yeah i have that, the abovevtt community is great for that
You might also want to try to suggest your players play warforged, autongnomes, and artificers
Remember you can always restrict classes that don’t fit the atheistic
A 90 point point buy?
yeah
It isn’t strictly a mistake but likely is. A 90 point PB is over 3 times the normal amount (27) and will result in PCs far above the average for their level in terms of power
Also not sure how that player has an AC of 30 without a lot of magic items
well there will be magic, but theres reasons built into the lore. the reasons being that machinery took place of magic. if you want me to i can explain it
Magic is already accounted for in the base balance framework of the game. But still, how did that player achieve an AC of 30?
he sent me a video of how, but also it starts at lvl 7
Oh I thought it was tortle monk
They can get 23 Ac at lvl 1 with regular rules
That sheet is set to private
Which build are you referring to? I know you can get that high with temporary buffs, but not constant ones
Well if you just allow them to break the general rules there, no wonder
Abilities don't exceed 20 normally.
Yeah that should be impossible under normal rules, even with PB since you need specific features or magic items to raise stats above 20; and PB can only buy up to 15 in any given stat
i let them do whatever they wanted with 90 points, so yeah no wonder indeed
Hey, don’t let people yuck your yum
huh?
If you want OP PCs, do it!
they gonna need it, i made a tough campaign
Don’t let others put you down for something your enjoying*
-# *special caveats apply
Tbh this is the newbie channel and encouraging straying away from the expected game balance when someone asks for advice likely isn’t going to be helpful in reaching their goal
i just told them constitution is very important anf to try and find heals
In any case it’s probably going to be difficult to give your players a fair and engaging challenge.
The immediate solution is just to arms race the monsters by buffing them up to the players’ level. It’s a double-edged sword though since even “OP” PCs are glass cannons compared to monsters. It also somewhat defeats the point of scaling the PCs up in the first place
i think this campaign is gonna be balanced in its own backwards way
It may be worth having a look at the CR system and how it factors into encounter building.
Balance is tricky in 5e since it’s not as simple as making sure the numbers/stats match on each side
And it gets harder the more powerful the PCs get
my enemies are gonna be extremely strong to match and exceed the players, like the rogues, one of them can deal 4d8+4 damage and gives prone on top of bonus action for 3d8
That’s exactly what I mean by arms racing the players.
you mean making strong characters when the players are too op, giving them a fair and or really hard fight?
Having a hard fight is one thing. Arms racing tends to lead to unfair fights, due to the differences between monsters and player characters
what is an arms race in this sense
Since this is the new player channel, I think it's also worth emphasizing that a sense of arbitrariness and balanced fights was something that the CR system tries to solve in the first place. This is fairly involved design work and why I'd be careful with just adding numbers on both sides.
Arms racing, at least in my definition, is the inflation of monster stats, damage, etc to counter PCs
At some point your players might start wondering why they even bothered to buff their pcs up in any given field if the enemies then still have 24 AC and resist their DC 20 saves.
If the fiction supports the monsters having those stats, fair enough. But that's advanced DMing in my mind.
ive made all the monsters before anyone joined. should i balnce them out some more or keep them as is
The benefit is that it’s an easy way to make fights harder. The drawback is that it makes fights more unfair and sometimes less engaging (especially when used in place of more dynamic methods of creating challenge)
Given this channel, I'm gonna give the obvious answer of: use official monsters.
know any good ones?
Any in the basic rules.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creature-stat-blocks
what do i do with my characters then? they cant be reused because theyre specific to the undercity
Start over @split kayak
eh, wasnt that far in anyway
What do I mean by unfair?
- It can defeat PCs' investments into their build. For example, if a player invested resources into maximizing their AC and monsters continue to reliably hit them or otherwise see no benefit, they're likely to feel like they've wasted their investment.
- It can homogenize combat. If monsters become hyper-deadly to PCs, every combat tends to boil down to a race of who can kill the other side first. These kinds of simple combats can be fine for lower levels, but the drawback is that they prevent dynamic engagement. It becomes difficult to make combats with other objectives because the best solution will always be to kill monsters first.
Basically what is being said is that you should balance your monsters and give your PCs more of a chance to defeat them
If I had the time I would be glad to help you with it @split kayak
would you like to judge the enemies before session zero is confirmed?

G'day fellow youngsters grins
what are must haves as a beginner and is a dwarf cleric good?
Pretty much this chapter:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#PlayingtheGame
Okay thanks 🙂
And sure, dwarf cleric is fine. Cleric is a powerful holy spellcaster and any species will work just fine with that.
👍
I was wondering if anyone around here uses the DND beyond tools (like maps and digital character sheets) to organise beginner sessions?
Mostly everyone on here uses DnD Beyond
I would be curious to see the numbers on that TBH.
They wouldn’t be a mod on here if they didn’t use it
Thing is, i recently emigrated and am looking to pick up playing again. it has been ages (3e) since i played and i was looking into Beyond and like the fact that it helps to break down distance / planning borders
Moderator
I understood what Mod meant that wasnt my confusion, no worries.
Welcome back @honest hollow
A lot of people will use DDB, as is it the main source of online WoTC D&D material, but there are other platforms that might be worth looking into as well, that either integrate well with DDB or standalone as seperate play spaces.
Thanks. i bought the 2014 books in a local gaming store a few weeks before 2024 came out.. which i subsequently bought as well :p
But peeps here play a swedish game which has a lot of similarities, hence it's hard to find D&D players
Well that’s a great starting point but it’s a lot of reading to do
Oh, but i read on every free moment.
That’s great
But having a "forgiving" DM to get the ball rolling again would be nice
Can I talk to you in PMs
Of course, be my guest
hey truck welcome
Ik the basic stuff but not some complicated things
ask your questions here and we do our best to help
So can i play on discord with friends?
indeed. MANY folks use Discord for voice and even video. they usually pair it with VTT (virtual table top) apps / sites like D&D Beyond and Roll20 (there are a bunch more, they are the 2 I use lol)

Hi I'm new to dnd I've only done one shots
Ain't this the main channel for the entirety of DnD? Why does it seem decaying
It's the channel for helping newcomers get into dnd

Gotcha, thanks

This game has alot of rules so it would be difficult to teach someone
I would recommend looking at the basic rules and trying to work out what the main things are like AC, DC, ability scores, proficiency bonus ect and then looking at what the different classes can do

do people get mad if i use ai for the chars appearance
in this server, you cant post AI images
at your table, it will depend a lot on your fellow players. some are okay with using ai, others dont like it at all
im not gonna post it
but i dont want a bad thing drawn by me
for some of my more important characters, I commission art
for the others, I usually use heroforge
imma try heroforge
Is it a good idea to immediately get into a group or should I make some chars first?
its fine to make characters as practise, but generally, they wont be much use to you until you start playing (and you might need to change some of their details to fit into a game anyway)
Either way works. But you would need make sure any DM knew you are new
Ok! Ty, I’ll try to get into a group first then, better for building my chars story
is it alr if im going insane reading everything about learning how to play
i wanna offer my friends to play dnd but idk how to do it online and i never had experience with dnd itself

for my first campaign as a DM im thinking about having my group become monster hunters (like werewolves vampires and all that) does that sound ok?
That sounds so cool!
hello guys! i'm totally new to dnd, and am kinda confused by the rules and everything is so overwhelming, what do you suggest i do first?
Very excited to hopefully start/join a campaign soon! Always had a fascination for DnD and I've decided to finally act upon it
Start with the free basic rules linked above a few messages
Welcome to D&D @dusky plover @devout sequoia @fiery panther @gleaming coyote and @paper pine !!! I hope you guys find all the tools you need here, and obviously ask away about anything that comes up you need help with. No question is a "dumb" in my opinion. Especially when you're new.
Very fun campaign premise.
Lots of flexibility with that in how you design the flow of things.
hello i kinda forgot to finish reading all info about dnd because it was too hard to understand for me since im not english and it was kinda long but i will probably read it later
You could have some easy to handle obvious threats to handle that are basically one shots, like "this x creature killed x person and ran off to x cave." Then you can easily have multi-session layout where there have been some killings in a town and you're coming in to investigate, track, and handle whatever is behind it. Then wherever and however early you want you could cook up some over arching plot/villain/story line. If you WANT that is. Not even necessary for all games.
No worries at all. Take your time haha.
It can be a lot to take in, especially if you're planning on DMing.
I was thinking it could end with strahd but that feels basic
Completely up to you. You're thinking about leading your monster hunter campaign into that campaign, or having him show up as the bbeg?
Hi ! I’m new in RPG, and I wanted to know how some of you done your design for your characters ?
I thought of AI, but it’s not the best option and it steals the work of artists..
Or even drawing, but I’m not that good..
btw can i play dnd for free online
bbeg
You sure can. Your resources within the VTTs will be limited without paying, but it's possible.
oh understood ty
You mean visually? Hero Forge is a fun option.
https://www.heroforge.com
I mean that can work just fine. Are you thinking of having them go into his domain of dread, or is he outside of it for some reason?
Thanks !
in his domain
We should probably take this to #dm-discussion or something or DMs if you're wanting to talk about it more extensively.
ok
What is the context of FA?
he is lockinf for players and says to senbd an fa if intrested
Friend request I assume? Not 100% sure
how do i find a dm tnat accepts newcomers
There are lots of DMs that accept new players. The barrier can be that there are a lot more players than DMs so finding a game can take time.
Who?
artilla
could someone explain how dnd works 🙏 😭

Hello everyone, I am just starting to get into D&D and have a few people wanting to do a campain but non of us have ever been a DM, I have made the choice of taking it on but I am having trouble figuring out how to start. I am wanting to make homebrew monsters and already have an idea for the campaign in my head but i'm not sure how to get beyond that point. Any help would be greatly apricated. Thank you in advance
?newdm
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The D&D Free Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.
- Get advice from your fellow Dungeon Masters in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building.
I will say, start with from the book monsters and keep homebrew to a minimum until you get MUCH better. I have been doing it for 35+ years and almost never homebrew monsters. I just Reskin them. so hey this beast is close to what I want so use all its stats and everything but i describe it to look like this giant Rabid squirell or whatever i want it to be
Ok thank you so much, one of my friends said with the way i was wanting to make the monsters my best bet would be doing homebrew but I will give that a shot and see where it leads me.
feel free to dm me if you want to bounce your thought off of me and I can see what help i can offer
sounds good thank you
Hello! So I am interested in playing DnD. I made a DnDBeyond account a year ago but never used it, as I was never able to find people IRL to play with. I know nothing about DnD and I know there is a handbook and I can make characters via DnDBeyond, but I don't know where to begin. I can't find the handbook online (aside from the paid version, but I don't have money to buy the digital/physical copy right now and don't know if there is a free version) and would like to read the rules and whatnot before creating a character so I know what im doing. Any advice?
Theres also so many DnD books that I am having a hard time following what ones to read if I need to read any
There is a free rules th at we’ll help get u started

I am fairly certain they are all contained within those links
Okay so I read all of this to be able to play? 🙂 What about all the books listed on DnDBeyond
The free rules are also there. Anything you made your character with was from the free rules. If you join a campaign, many of the players and the DM usually have access to and share a bunch of the paid books. That will open more options to you then
TYSM! ❤️
Do vet players recommend a newbie to watch Critical Roll? I've seen clips which is what has peaked my interest
Or is that too advanced?
critical role is a fun watch, and it can teach you some things about how dnd works. just be aware that this is not a typical table, which everyone being voice actors that are being filmed as they play. so dont expect your own games to be exactly like that.
but fundamentally, they are playing dnd
What omegon said
maybe be aware that Vox Machina starts with them mid game at high level, and a problematic player is in the first 27 episodes. Also the production quality is rough at the beginning
I’ve heard people watch it then expect that level from everyone at their table but are disappointed because 90% of us just regular folk with no entertainment background like them.
Oh that I completly understand that! I was just wondering where to start watching CR if I were to start.
well I would say you can start with vox machina Episode 1 if you don't mind the less enjoyable elements, or with episode 28.
or you start with campaign 2, the mighty nein
hello anyone can help me out im new and I found out about it and am really intrigued
Same here I'm with this guy so if you teach us it's 2 for 1!

Campaign 2 is a really fun watch! especially because it follows more of the start of the campaign! (I started my CR watch with Mighty Nein and have absolutely no regrets 🙂
Do you need to watch Cam 1 to watch Cam 2? Are they connected?
no theyre completley seperate
they take place years apart (ive only watch Vox machina the TV show never the campaign but I really want to!)
well they take place in the same world, just different time periods if that makes sense
It’s only in campaign 3 that they started to heavily feature the previous campaigns
wait they have a TV show based on their campaine?
yeah! its an animated show on prime
Legend of vox machina on prime
damn! Gotta get a prime free trial and binge lmao
3 seasons so far and two more to go
Thanks for the info friendos! I am excited to learn more about DnD in every way
What does homebrew mean? Apperently a lot of CR is "homebrew"?
homebrew is everything that is not directly made by Wizards of the Coast. Unofficial, fan made material
sometimes, people make a distinction between random homebrew on the internet, or stuff you made at home on one side, and 3rd party published material
Critical Role mostly uses this homebrew :
the game world is the original creation by matt mercer (the DM) and some of his players also use subclasses that he made for the game.
(though Exandria has been published as setting by WotC in the meantime, but its started out as entirely homebrew setting)
What do i need to do to play dnd i know zero about it and i dont have friends who play it so can you play it online

Does anybody know where I might be able to find one shots for beginners (preferably free?) I'm in France and have had trouble finding ones in my time zone :/
Don’t try to find one in your time zone specially. Just try to find one that’s happening when you are free. It doesn’t matter what time zone the other players are in so long as you are all available at the same time
i suggest posting what you are looking for by following the super easy to follow instructions in #find-a-game that way a DM that fits your needs can reach out!

Hello people — new to dnd, never played it
Just spend my days creating characters & proceeding to write short novels for back stories / world building
That’s pretty cool. Do you have questions we can help with?
I dropped my current character into #character-discussion more or less would just love some opinions, it’s a very short version to give people an idea of the OC

PP is not an acronym that 5e uses to my knowledge.
