I already have that sheet, because I and my friends are a players of D&D since one year, I'm looking for the new, but in Italian, the sheet that you can find in the new player's handbook; there's someone that can help me?
Hello
Howdy. What's on your mind today?
Nothing much
Just checking in with a few questions on my first character I wanna build
first character is exciting!!
I'm pretty sure I have the idea done, because I was talking to denix and emerald last night and they helped me
hii
Hi
this chat is for helping newcomers to the dnd right?
What do you have in mind?
Yea
is level 3 character and 2 week playing expirience considered newcomer
like i know basic mechanics and stuff
I would like some feedback for my character I'm working on, and some help setting up a character card if y'all could help with that
If you've got questions, feel free to ask.
you see, my friend in my party wants to become vampire
but if it happens its so over for our party
💔
btw hes dragonborn paladin
paladin vampire 💔
hes already got bitten by true vampire, so ig he has the curse
so when he dies AND gets buried he will become weak vampire right
and he has to drink blood of true vamprie to become true vampire himself
am i right?
I think that sounds true, but don't trust my opinion, I've never played
so if i will NOT let his hp get down to 0 and get him buried then he wont turn into vampire?
cuz i can burn his coffin and heal him and shi
so can i prevent that?
Gimme a sec
Here's what I found
In D&D 5e, dying from a true vampire's bite and being buried will result in you becoming a vampire spawn, not a true vampire. To become a true vampire, you would need to be intentionally turned by a true vampire
If that's the format you're playing
Depends on the ruleset you're using. In 2024, a vampire has to actually reduce a victim to 0 hp with its bite (necrotic damage), otherwise it doesn't do anything.
intentionally like for example if true vampire bites him (not to death) he can become true vamp instead of spawn, by true vampire's will
?
yeah, I think it has to happen when the bite happens
That's good to know deva
Also, this would be a great place for your DM to decide how they want to have it happen in the game
when it was on session, the true vampire invited one of my teammates to the room for a "private talk" so noone except him and dm knows what happened there
but he prob got bitten
oh lol. Then maybe! You''l just have to wait and find out then haha
Yeah, all this is quite DM dependent. There aren't any fixed rules for lots of this.
Well then it's up to your DM.
I love secrets at the table. Right now I'm playing an evil character who wants to rule the world and nobody but the DM knows haha
well my plan is to burn the coffin and dont let my bitten teammate get 0 hp
this is for your DM to decide
The 0 HP thing wont matter. It only matters if it's caused by a bite
so like, if you're bitten, and two weeks later you're at 0 hp and buried, nothing happens
damn
well so i plan on becoming lycanthrope
werebear to be specific
to fight my vampiric teammate
my teammate LOWKEY evil lmao im 100% he will kill our party lmao
And everyone at the table is fine with that?
no one but dm and me and my teammate knows that
Well no, what I mean is in a more general meaning. Is everyone at the table fine with pvp?
its not a serious campaign it has a lot of humor and unserious moments so it considered as a not serious fight but i still want to have some trick in my pocket
yeah, me and my party tried to gas my teammate in some dungeon
as a joke ofc
he were trapped in room with gas but we decided to not help
It's worth a conversation with the other players first. Players shouldn't generally be hiding things from each other. Their characters can totally be in the dark about things, but the players should know what's going on.
but eventually we all just laughed lmao
i dont think it will work in out party
cuz i should not know this lol it supposed to be a secret between my teammate and dm
but anyways
I see. It's not something I'd want in my games, but if it works for your group and there are no hard feelings, you do you.
That's more "ask your DM" territory tbh.
so i want to know is it a good idea or nah
my character is firbolg druid. by lore his favorite animal is bears
As I've established, I don't think so.
why? lycanthropia sucks?
No, pvp sucks
oh i see
And also yes, lycanthropy depends heavily on the DM and it might just mean your character becomes an npc if they get infected.
what abt lycanthropia then? is it weaker than vampirism or they're ~equal?
damn
well i know my dm
he will probably be good with lycanthropia
Both of these are bad pc endings, essentially. Not to be used as a sort of "buff" or story element unless the DM facilitates that.
why these are bad tho?
Your pc becoming an npc isn't bad for you?
like being lycanthrope of werebear and accepting the curse gives u alot of buffs like immunity to non-silver weapons
what if it wont happen?
Again, depends on the ruleset (it doesn't in 2024), and on your DM making the decision not to turn the pc into an npc.
That's besides the point I was making. If you're in "it doesn't happen" territory, then your DM has already changed the rules so much that I can't comment on it usefully.
Part of what Deva is saying is that the rules do not really provide a way that one can become a vampire or lycanthrope and still be controlled by you as a player.
Once you desire a situation where a player is playing either of those, you are firmly in Ask Your DM territory as how it plays out is entirely specific to your table.
yeah, evil pc's shouldn't just automatically kill their party
I had a long conversation with my DM and I told him I wanted to play an evil character, who from her perspective is manipulating the party to acchieve her goals of world domination.
He said that's fine if I'm willing to turn over my character sheet at 13 or 15th level.
She might become the BBEG of the whole campaign!

Pick a class, species and background for starters.
check out the free rules, character creation is explained there step by step
Any ideas for a new guy
Do you want to do your fighting mostly close up, or at range?
How important is magic: not at all, sometimes, mostly, always?
Ranger would do you. Hang back and shoot, use spells when needed to change things up.
yeah sounds like a ranger
Ok
or maybe an arcane trickster rogue
Ok
(Looking at free content first)
Not super needful at this stage.
Ok so I should go to character create
I really wish there was a dnd shop near me were I stay there a rarity
#character-discussion ? Not at this stage.
You'll also need to pick a species and origin, also called background. Have a look at the options.
You can use the numbers 8, 10, 12, 13, 14 and 15 for your initial ability scores, in any order you like. This is called the standard array method.
Rangers typically want high Dexterity, good Wisdom and at least 10 in Constitution.
It probably would have helped me start playing sooner I love fantasy
Ok
Should I write it down
Yes. But you might also consider D&D Beyond, which can also help you create and record your character's details.
Ok I'm doing so so far I'm a elf ranger with a long bow and short sword
Still busy with the stats
Hey, I'm new and looking to set up a listing for players to potentially join, is it ok for me to post it in the Looking for Players chat?
Also hi
It is! Check #find-a-game for the instructions, and beware there is a 30 minute delay (I believe) between joining the server and being able to use that service.
It looks a bit different to what i'm used to, so I don't know if I need to reformat it to something else.
Yes - use #looking-for-players to advertise your D&D game that needs players. And yes as Mr. Smith noted, please read #find-a-game carefully as it explains how to use the bot commands to create a post there.
Also: take your time to carefully prepare your post. You only get to put one up a week.
Personally I do mine in a Google doc to make it perfect, then copy-paste into the various bits of the form.
You can also look through #looking-for-dm and message the poster or use the thread attached to their post to find players looking for a game/DM
Thanks, I already have it saved on a notepad, but I'll keep the time restriction per post in mind. Is it ok that it's a pre-written homebrew campaign? I know a few servers that had unwritten rules against those, but it's my first time in the official discord sever, so I'm unaware of anything like that here.
Yep - prewritten is fine. Just needs to be D&D
And by that I mean it needs to be playable using official D&D material (homebrew and 3rd-party content is fine too but that's on top of allowing official D&D material - if a player can't play it using the free rules or official D&D books, then it's not D&D for our purposes).
Ok, it's Odyssey of the Dragonlords, just making sure.
That would be 3rd party but as long as someone can join and play using D&D free rules or D&D Players Handbook for their character, that will be fine.
Yall I wanna join a campaign but I forgot how
Read #find-a-game carefully to learn how to use our Looking For Game channels.
Could we join together
I'm new and looking for campaign
Hey, I’m looking for someone to teach me the ropes and hopefully become a new dnd friend.
Welcome! #learn-to-play has some handy links to help you get started, but did you have any specific questions?
I'm new to
We could both look for a DM together
I just wanted to learn the basics, I grew up watching my father play, and now I want to play with others is all.
So yes or no
On playing together
I'd love to play
Sure, but I don't respond too fast
Meant to respond to you with the message above
Yeah
We can if you'd like?
Okay cool.
No😅, I am very new to dnd. Still learning to navigate. My father has books from when he used to play so I am skimming through the books.
nice!!
Though I always wanted to be a changeling
Thanks
dnd beyond is really great for setting up your first character
free, (for just barebones classes and subclasses) but gets you into it fast
Oh okay, thank you😊
yes! enjoy! You may not be able to make a changeling class on dndbeyond but you can make another character just to see how it works
Yeah the free stuff won’t have changeling. Once you get in with a group they may own the book that has them tho
Hey yall, sorry for not being active at all, began playin Baldurs Gate 3 in hopes that I understand the DnD world better
I need to get back into baldurs gate
I never finished the story. I got to the final city and got overwhelmed by all the options haha
I'm playing too to understand as well lol
Lol
Also because I just love the character designs and story
Are there also places or forums where people look to play one shots?

They were in jg?
Don't know I was just hurry with back story
Was going to go into more depth later
Planning on maybe changing store to sute the dm
Hey guys maybe take this to a private chat so other new folks don’t get lost in it. 😊
Oh yeah sorry
Kk
Guys so how do you play text based or like pics?
There are apps that you can use to play with people online - they provide stuff like a playing field for moving minis, a dice rolling interface and sometimes much more.
They're called vtts (virtual tabletops). The friendliest to try out is Owlbear Rodeo
Lots of folk use voice chat, some prefer text.
Usually I use a verbal description and an image. But I'm still not quite sure how you mean.
Like, as a DM?
You'll find text-based games by searching for play by post, or PbP.
Nice Thats what I was asking like image fore Everything?
There might be pictures, there might not. Depends on the game
Oo nice
No, just the main locations and maybe some npcs. I might have a single image up for hours while roleplay happens.
Yo can some one help me out with playing dnd online, I wanna get into it but I dunno what to do

So me and my family are starting a campaign where everyone is new. Is there any bots on discord I could put on the my server that are beneficial?
A dice bot or avrae
What does avrae do?
Honestly if you are using D&D Beyond and or Something like Roll20, all you need Discord for is the voice (And video of seeing each other if u want). Nothing special needed in Discord
Well we’re playing in person as of rn I just didn’t know if there was a bot that helped with spells or anything
It’s my first session and only 2 of the 7 of us have played before. My brother who’s DMing and one our friends
Got ya.
So yeah wasnt sure if there’s any bots like that. If not we will figure it out over time
The Free Rules format nicely on a phone, that can be helpful to have available.
Hello. I was thinking of which class fits me the most, and i realized that i just love melee warriors that can also use a fair share of magic. So... i guess either a half caster or a melee warlock works. And since ranger is...well, ranger, i can't decide between paladin or warlock ? What should i go towards to get the most of what i want ? Which one is more new player friendly ? Or just anything interesting or important to tell me ? I'll take anything.
Sorry for long text.
Rangers are competent melee characters as well. They have a reputation as being weak, but that was from the original 2014 PHB. Either Tasha's upgrades or 2024 make them just fine.
Not sure though. Maybe paladin? They're relatively straightforward
I’m in a similar spot to yourself to be honest, personally I lead more to warlock though because I see more utility in the magic side of it all. The melee is great and can build really well, in my opinion I see Paladin as more of a tank/hard hitter, which then offers/dabbles in the magic support. From what you’re saying I think a paladin would be more beneficial in my opinion
Hi
I don't know where to start 😅
I have a book... its called how not to get eaten by owl bears.
Also I have the game masters book of traps puzzles and dungeons
Also I plan to get the 2014 e5 handbook
?new
Hmm. The command doesn't seem to be working right now.
But you can get started with just the basic rules!
This?
I’m still kinda new but I’ve got grips of the basic rules and stuff
Thank you!!
We also have #learn-to-play which can help! You don't need to read all of the rules before finding a game, but having a look over character creation and combat rules before finding a game can help speed things up. And of course you can ask questions here!
Character Creation is one of the things you can have a go at before finding a game. You might use '2024 rules' or 2014 rules' for your character- they've very, very similar, so it won't matter much which one you use to practice with, but when you join a game you might want to check which rules they're using. There are step by step guides, and as a practice PC you don't need to think too hard. You can just pick any 'Basic rules' class and species and see if you can make it- once you've made one PC you've basically got the idea for making any PC.
For character sheets you can use these printable/ editable character sheets or you can create a character on Dndbeyond
Note that on dndbeyond your access to options will be limited to the free access species and classes unless you purchase more, or homebrew. Feel free to ask here if confused by anything.
Then it's finding a game. You can use the instructions in #find-a-game to post if the LFG channels here but there are also other places to look into, including Adventure League (official organised play) other platform's LFG (Like roll20, r/lfg on reddit) so on. Or find an in person game by kidnapping getting together some friends or looking into local game shops.
So I’m kinda writing/putting together my own campaign that I can build in a series of one shots between different players because of scheduling difficulties etc. I’ve got a brief outline/idea on what the BBEG(s) would be and their ideals, but how to get the players to understand and be passionate about stopping them. Because I myself and my players are new, I’m finding it hard to get them to care about the story itself. Has anyone got any advice?
Oh for campaign and DMing advice #dm-discussion can be a big help!
yeah
Awesome! Sorry haha
Wait.
Hear me out.
A pact of the blade archfey warlock whose pact wep is a heavy crossbow.
With spell sniper and shapshooter.
The game plan is basically teleporting everywhere, shooting from all sides from a 100 ft away lmao.
Is it viable ? No.
Is it extremely cool in my mind ? Yes.
I want to understand but half that was gibberish to me 😭

Yes indeed
I am waiting for my brain to have the processing power to attack that particular tool 🥹
Also just so you have a simplified version of what this means. This is basically a warlock that can teleport a lot and specializes with weapons.
Interesting 👀
My brain kept misreading archfey as wifey for some reason
Also rereading it with the translation in mind. Ur right that would be rly cool 🥹

Excuse me, where am I supposed to go if I need to find people for a campaign
Does anyone know?
Thank you
no problem!
Okay now this works instead of the other thing thank you!
No problem!’
Wha do I need in order to play with other people? I can’t really get any websites or apps.
not much roll 20 is a great website with friendly newcomer stuff if you are interested i can help you.
anyone down to let me join them?
Im stiil new to this discord forum I was looking for some players where and how I advertise that ?
Check out #find-a-game
It explains how
Hello
when you play with the 2024phb revision, is the stuff written in tashas cauldrin also applicable?
Noticed that for example some subclasses written in there also are now in the phb but for example sorcerous versatility isnt in the new phb
So i made a character now what?!
You can replace a spell and a cantrip and a Metamagic on every lvl up
i saw that yea
i was refering specifically to the option to change the attribute gain for sorcerer points
or is that now just both possible?
ah nvm, you are right
i misread the thing
Hello i know some little about dnd anyone can help me to start and play my frist session?
welcome to the hobby, use this message as a guide
i know some of those basics
read all of them and if you want a group then look at #find-a-game

What are hit points?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/phb-2024/playing-the-game#HitPoints
Hit Points represent durability and the will to live. Creatures with more Hit Points are more difficult to kill. Your Hit Point maximum is the number of Hit Points you have when uninjured. Your current Hit Points can be any number from that maximum down to 0, which is the lowest Hit Points can go.
So its like health?
Yep, basically
Noted 👀
I thought that's what armor was 🫠
Oh I see. Armor is usually represented by armor class (AC for short). High AC means you're less likely to get hit. You only take hit point damage if you do get hit (or fail a saving throw, but that's just by the by)
anyone willing to start a campaign with a bunch of newbies, we have a dm

hey im wondering if there are gms in this discord that would be interested in teaching a new group please dm me if your intrested
Dose anyone know the difference between dnd, Al and ddb
D&d is the actual game
AL is the organized play for that game
DDB is a website you can use for characters, rules info, etc
Ohh that's cool thx so Al is just the name for like playing dnd?
No, Adventure League is format for places to run multiple games with different DMs and players. Playing D&D is just playing D&D.
No, organized play is specific rules for playing d&d in a consistent way. You can play the game without them.
But they let you use the same characters across any table using those rules. As long as you meet the requirements.
Ahh I see thx
what happens if your character dies?
Under current rules, you can raise them during an adventure as per normal game rules. Or you can raise them for free at the end, but you don't get anything that was found after you died.
that's so cool! so you can keep reusing the same character even if they die
Some people choose to retire characters if they die but it's generally not required
hey! Is this where we look for help? Because i know absolutely nothing about dnd and i thought the first thing i should do was make a character sheet, but me and my friends are really struggling. Can anybody help?
Download DnD beyond on your device,, it's the easiest I find for new players, all you do is tap the action you want and it rolls for you !
Okay!
Also check the links that are pinned on this channel
And if you are on a computer or laptop the D&D beyond website is so helpful
Hey, just joined, me and friends (5 of us total) always wanted to play DND and finally have it planned to play over summer, however none of us have played before, I have an extremely basic knowledge of how the game runs through listening to a podcast and tiktok doom scrolling, what would be the best advice? What do I need to buy? How can I make it fun and accessible for my friends at the same time.

You don't need to buy anything, at least to test it out. The Free Rules are linked above.
There is no best advice because people are different and what works for one may not work for someone else. The resources above should help, though!
Is there a way yall can make looking group thing show what state someone's in
You can list your state in your post if you wish.
Most games advertised here are played online, so physical location is less important.
If you’re looking for a local game, you’ll probably have better luck searching locally.
#learn-to-play message has a few suggestions for that.
Oh ok
I've read through the thingy... now what do I do?
this thingy I mean ^
If you want to find a group follow the easy steps in #find-a-game
I've posted in there already
I'm more talking about what other research can I do while I'm waiting 🥴
Make some practice characters, hang around the channels and follow discussions...
There were 2 thingies on youtube I keep getting reccomended to me but i can't remember what they are
I listen to many actual play D&d podcasts
You might enjoy following a D&D livestream/podcast too just to get a feel for how others play the game (do note many of these focus on entertainment first overteaching you how to play D&D)
Hi everyone!
Hello
Evening (or whatever time of day for ya lol)
I'm on EST
CST here
Evening Chano
How are you
Were ye looking for spring specific Tails
What are the essentials I need for a D&D game? Do I need multiple dice of different number of sides?
If you’re playing in person yes
The game rules (free rules is all you need to start playing), dice, character sheets, people willing to play
Free rules can be found here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
You can buy at least 1-2 sets from all sorts of places. As noob said, the rest is easy to find
Well the people are the hardest part lol
The scheduling I'd say is even harder than finding the people but I guess they could be lumped as the same thing
hi
finding time to play isn't a problem, me and my friends are still in school
Oh but can you all meet at the same time on the same day for 3-4 hours to play D&D?
yep
Now to find a store in Serbia that actually sells D&D starter kits
Try local gamestores and hobby shops.
But as noted, you can start with just the free rules first
See if you like the game enough to invest in actual books/starter sets.
I've seen some shorts on dnd podcasts and I got intrigued, I did some research and the thought of you and your friends expressing your creativity in a fantasy world sounds like a fun experience
but the stories, the maps, the dice, the rules, the characters are all overwhelming right now
I'll read some rules get some dice and find a prewritten story to try to get some on site experience
Great plan F.
Does this look like a regular set-up for the "Other Proficiencies & Languages" section?

Light armor
Weapons
•Hand Crossbow
•Shortbow
•Longbow
•Shortsword
•Longsword

Yup
Thanks!
Normally your skill proficiencies would be recorded by filling in the bubble next to each skill instead.
hello guys im a brand new player to this game hope you guys can help me along the way

Hey guys im new to this server
hi @fair ether
Where can i possibly find a dnd campaign i can join?
bottom channel of the server
just posted it to Kai too
Do I have to be here for a specific amount of time to see art channels?
Oh, this is a thingy
No, all our channels are open to everyone. You can use id:browse to customize which channels you see.
Welcome! #learn-to-play has some good info to get you started, but if you’ve got any specific questions, ask away!
HI, what the hell is going on here
This channel is for helping people get started with D&D.
Check out #find-a-game
If I’m looking to get a player’s handbook, does it particularly matter which one?
I’d recommend the 2024 one since those are the most up-to-date rules, but you’d be fine with the 2014 one if you prefer.
Good to know
I’ve been looking to get into dnd for a while, I just have no idea where or how to even begin
Especially when it comes to character creation and the rules surrounding it. Does that generally differ from dm to dm?
Some DMs have special rules for character creation, but they should/will list those explicitly.
That being said, all 5e games use the Basic Rules as a base
Which include character creation rules. You can find a link to the Basic Rules in this channel's pins as well as #learn-to-play
On D&D beyond when I go to the marketplace and see for example the 2024 player’s handbook and it lists all the stuff it will unlock such as classes and species, what does that mean? Does it mean that it unlocks the ability for me to add that stuff to my character sheet on the app?
Yes, though it isn't necessary to purchase books to play the game. The Basic Rules has everything needed to play the game outside of people to play with.
The PHB simply unlocks more options
If I buy a physical copy of the book would I have to buy the digital one on d&d beyond as well to be able to use that stuff for their digital character sheet or is there something where you can prove you have a physical copy of the book so it’ll just let you?
Unfortunately buying a physical copy of the book doesn't mean you own them in D&D beyond and vice versa
Welp that sucks
It would be absolutely sweet if they could but I could imagine it being a nightmare to authenticate
Yeah I can see how that would be a nightmare
quick question! can someone tell me all the editions of dnd? I just wanted to know for future reference, thanks!
There's 1st edition (1E) or AD&D as I've heard some people call it, 2E, 3E, 3.5E, 4E and the current one is 5E but some people debate if 2024 is 5.5E
But you mostly only hear people talk about 5E, 3.5E and 1E
Atleast in my experience
AD&D and 1e are different
ty
Oh my bad 😅
I was trying to figure out what my campaign was bc I forgot lol
I started with 1e and then AD&D came out the year I started playing 1989
@vivid plover you are probably playing either 5e or the new 2024 or 5.5e version of DnD
tysm
Ask your DM
DDB and some other retailers additionally sell a physical + digital bundle if you wanted both
Helloooo
Do I use my reaction, for example shield, when the enemies attack has been rolled and therefor I know he would hit or before that?
After
Where’s the best place for me to start learning
Here, or the books
I’ll do here I’m assuming this channel is where I should do it or is their another one
The basic rules are free on D&D beyond, there are also resources pinned in this channel
This is the best channel if you have questions. But i recomend reading the base rules first
Oh, that's great, thanks 🙏
Oh perfect I’ll look at those and just final question where I live the closest place that hosts d & d is a 3 hour drive away is there a place here when I can look for online games
Thank you so much
_If the spell is on your class's spell list, you can read the scroll and cast its spell without providing any material components. Otherwise, the scroll is unintelligible. _
A fighter can't cast via Spell Scrolls?
And a cleric can't use a spell scroll that has a sorcerer spell on it?
yep
Oh! That's good to know thanks!
(saw in Baldurs gate 3, that anyone can cast spells with scrolls, why was that done?)
BG3 did a lot of things that make more sense for a video game but don't correspond to the actual rules.
For example, the rules allow for continuous jumping as long as you have movement. Because this would be silly in a video game, BG3 added a bonus action cost.
Yeah, makes sense
It's like a light version of it
Me thinking of a cool pact of the blade warlock with a crossbow.
The pact description about to destroy my dreams :
Have a wand or ornamental hand crossbow as your focus, use eldritch blast with agonising.
I am new to D and D wanna play online any game going on?
Check out the posts in #looking-for-players for games or read up in #find-a-game for more.
Aside from here, you could also try LFG on Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
OK ty
Mr Smith
Add me when you play next time let me know
I can't type anything in looking for group chat
The instructions to do so are found in #find-a-game
Or rather, the instructions to make a post in the channel
Look at the posts in #looking-for-players , see if anything matches what you can do and reach out to the DMs. Be aware it may take some time to find a group to play with.
OK ty I see now
i'd also stop by

Right tool for the job can create artisan tools that are needed, but they vanish when using right tool for the job again.
So, if I use the components the tools come with for crafting something.. does what ever is crafted vanish or break when the tools are gone?
Nope, just the tools.
I have some wood, I want a chair. I conjure my tools and make the chair. My tools vanish. I have a chair.
how does the leveling system function
like adding up health and damage, and spells and racial bonuses
When you level up, few things happen
- Your hit points increase by an amount equal to a roll of your class' hit die plus your constitution (or average of it)
- You gain any features from your class / subclass for that level
- There are also few tables that show how your numbers increase, like your proficiency bonus, gaining more spell slots, etc. most of them found on your class table
and damage?
Hey, there! Sorry, I saw you asked this a few times and didn't get a response.
In general, when you level up, you take a look at your class and you gain all the things it mentions.
For example, here's the Fighter in the Basic Rules (2024): https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes#Fighter
When you hit level 2, you can check that table and see you get Action Surge (one use) and Tactical Mind (with more description below the table).
If you want to get super official with it, you can check out the "Gaining a Level" section in the basic rules. https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#GainingaLevel
Hope that helps!
Your damage isn't increased like that. Some features might increase something about your damage, and cantrips get stronger per your level, but just going from level 1 to 2 isn't gonna automatically just increase your "damage"
Like for example, your one handed longsword attack is gonna deal 1d8 + your strength modifier of damage regardless of your level. It however does increase if your strength score increases (and thus the modifier), or is your class gives you a feature that indirectly or directly increases that
Hi, I'm completely new to D&D and I wanted to know, what books should I buy on dndbeyond so I can be prepared for my first campaign?
You can get a lot of mileage out of the Free Rules, so you might wanna try things out before you invest money into the hobby.
The core of the game is the Player's Handbook; whether you're a DM or a player, that'd be the first thing to buy. Anything beyond that depends on how you intend to play!
Thanks! I don't suppose knowing a bit of the lore helps (I've read a few novels and played a few games)
(I mean video games)
What am I supposed to do to play dnd I'm still kinda new to it so I would like to learn

Not really, there is a crap tun of lore. You don’t need to know that, besides 99.9% of the time either the world is homebrewed. Or the dm makes things up lol
Kyle is spot on. The world you play in and the lore of that world are not really known unless you get it from the DM.
The exception to this is if you end up in Organized Play where lore is set somewhat centrally (even if from the books) which would potentially create enough consistency that reading up on lore will have any use.
Though even there I'd argue most of us have no idea beyond the basics
I probably know more about the AL lore than the actual Forgotten Realms lore. I just assume that everything I learned in Baldur's Gate 1+2 is probably correct and that's worked out fine so far
since im not sure how all the rules work, can someone pm me to help with any questions abt making a character?
You could just ask here, and have more people able to answer
Follow the steps 1 at a time on D&D Beyond. It is super easy. anything your confused on, you can click and it will give you further explanation. then if you have a specific qeustions you can ask here
Generally speaking, there are so many new people here that no one has the time/ability to give folks one on one help. So you're much more likely to get an answer to a question that you post in the chat over asking for private messages.
this is all just very confusing to me
like i read through the intro stuff and all that was linked ^ up there somewhere,, but i dont really get how everything comes into play
like the HP, or the dice, or how damage works, or like a lot of it. its just super confusing
Hii guys im new heree
Hey Nomi
Did you check the Playing the Game chapter of the rules? Here's the section on dice:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#WhatAreDiceFor
I'm happy to answer specific questions.
Hii 👋
There are some great links in the pins on this channel. Then when you’re ready, follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking fo
Hey I’m a new dm and had 2 sessions so far and I purchased the dragon lance campaign book and do you all think I need to buy anything else? Or am I fine? I do plan to buy the crooked moon book later in the year for holloween to do a spooky campaign with my players
Do you have the PHB? That'd probably be important to have if you don't already.
do you have the players hand book, dungeon masters guide, and monster manual
Ohhhh I do not actually:c
i'd go with those in that order next. the 3 basic books for any D&D group
A fair amount of the MM is usually in the free rules, so that one may be less important
You can get by with the Free Rules, but if you've already played and enjoyed it and want to take it to the next level, then yeah, those books are the step to take.
Ok I’ll think about it in the future we are 2 sessions in so far and things seems to be going well
Also never hurts to ask your group to chip in the money to help keep the full burden off of u
I’ll break it down:
hit points/die is determined by the class each kne has a dice number associated with it.
Calculations either rolled or average
Damage only happens if a monster roll exceeds your ac:
example
Player ac:18
monster rolled 20 to attack
It hits then I roll what ever is in the sheet
I’ll say take 6 points of slashing damage.
There no mitigation unless you have an ability or spell that allows for it
An attack roll hits if the total equals or exceeds your AC.
Hello!
So with the example 18 AC above, any total of 18 or above would hit. Only a 17 or lower would miss.
im trying to find a group to play with, is there a channel for that here?
Yep! You could browse through #looking-for-players to see what’s available.
#find-a-game and #learn-to-play message have some other options.
hey everyone
Howdy
greetings and salutations!
Hi I've been wanting to play D&D for a long time now I'm going to do my first campaign this Thursday does anyone have any tips for me?
Take a moment to review the free game rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Maybe watch some D&D streams/podcasts to see/hear how others play the game (just be awrae that these are entertainment first and foremost)
Try your hand at making a character following the steps outlined in the free rules.
Are you DM or player?
Just a quick question. I will start a new adventure as Paladin, Oath of the Ancients. Is there a "ruleset" I have to follow in regards to roleplay "Do not steal", "Do not kill" etc. wich is bound to that specific oath?
The "ruleset" is to abide by your tenets, which are outlined at the beginning of the subclass description
It's important to note that Paladin Oath tenets are meant to be reasonable and flexible. You can't be mind-controlled into breaking them, and breaking a tenet doesn't always mean breaking your oath. Additionally you can work with your DM to customize your tenets if you want something a little different.
Breaking your oath by violating your tenets is also not always the end of the world. There are barely any hard-coded rules for what happens, only suggestions for your DM. Typically, as suggested by the DMG, if you willingly and intentionally violate your oath you may:
- Temporarily lose your powers (e.g. subclass specific features, spellcasting) until some form of repentance or resolution is performed
- Have to switch to another more appropriate Oath
- Have to switch to another class.
The exception is if you willingly, intentionally, and unregretably violate your oath in pursuit of an evil purpose, in which case you'd likely be switched to the Oathbreaker subclass
I hope this was a comprehensive answer @nocturne locust
I think so 🙂 - If you mean "Oath of the Ancients" -> Tenets of the Ancients, from the DnD Playerhandbook?!
Yes
And... I should not be an "immovable object" in theese regards, hindering the gameplays completly, I may chose f.e. not to participate in breaking and entering or "persuasion", if the group decides to do so? I could stay out/leave ?!
You as a palyer can be much more pragmatic about these things than the actual character. For example, you might just say that the character doesn't see some of the things that the party does that they would normally object to. Or you roleplay the character as being easily convinced by the rest of the party that no actually what they're doing is fine.
It is largely a roleplay decision. Even breaking the oath isn't as much part of the rules as it is roleplay facilitated by the DM.
I want to play that paladin with very high moral standards, but also do not want to block the whole gameflow by talking down from my high horse, actively preventing every "bad thing" a partymember is planning to do. But from what I get from you, I am free to "blissfully ignore" the one or other thing they might do... like stealing a horse from our quest and reward giver.
Yeah. And the level of blatancy on that ignorance will depend on how serious you're being about the roleplay. Some DMs will not be pleased if you just have your paladin do a 180 and turn their back on the blatant crime, instead of finding a roleplay reason for why they wouldn't be in a position to see the crime.
So I think it warrants some oog discussion.
Allright. Will read the PHB again and have a word with my DM. As I am a firsttimer, I have no clue and "want to to things right" 🙂
Thank you for taking the time, helping me. ❤️
Happy to do so
You can make a point to go back and pay for the horse personally. A sort of, if you're not going to do the right thing, I will.
But it can also be a sort of "I've seen them cut down a dozen cultists, they can be relied on to do the right thing when it truly matters"
Like how we all have that one friend who is a bit of a twit but you've known them since school.
Having troubles sleeping and thinking about my character. Would there be a foreseeable problem with a 3rd level life cleric duel classing w/Monk? I think I have in my head how I'd like for my character to develop. I think that may be picking up monk the next time he levels up.
If you're new I would not recommend multiclassing. The largest issue with a monk-cleric multiclass is that you're delaying progression in two classes who like to stay solo if possible. In Cleric's case it's their access to higher level spells and in Monk's case it's their martial art progression.
This going somewhat past newbie topics but multiclassing early also delays what's considered each classes' first major power boost (e.g. extra attack for martial classes, 3rd-level spells for casters).
I’ve been playing for a while now and I still avoid multiclassing cause… it’s very easy to just feel like you can’t do much. You end up with loads of meh abilities all competing for your actions
In general the common advice is to only multiclass when:
- You have a specific synergy in mind already
- Know what you're getting and what you're losing out on
- You can't achieve what you want via narrative, reflavoring, or via other means such as magic items.
In summary, multiclassing is a mechanical choice, not a narrative one. If you have to ask yourself "should I multiclass?" the answer is probably no; you'll already know if you want to. Explore other non-mechanical options to get what you want first.
I did multi class a monk/cleric in AD&D and it wasn’t too bad
That's quite a bit different since that's from a nearly 30 year old ruleset.
Yes a lot has changed for that in 40 years but I guess it’s much harder now than back then
This is a better topic for #dnd-elder-editions for the viability of multiclassing in AD&D
Monk/Cleric us a decent multiclass in 2024 (weaker than a straight Cleric but can be stronger than a straight Monk)
Yes
Yup, that's the important part. It's important to be careful and knowledgeable when wanting to multiclass. It's probably the easiest way to accidentally make a character ineffective
Or make a broken character
What's stronger white dragon or copper dragon
That depends, stronger in what regard?
Like in a fight
There are stages of dragons
That also depends. It can be as simple as "anything with a higher CR," or "an older variant of dragon (e.g. ancient white)"
I'll continue to consider this choice. I'll keep in mind what you've all said here tonight. If I'm still tempted to add monk as I level what level cleric would you want to achieve before adding 1st level monk?
From a wyrmling/baby to young to adult to ancient dragons @lyric fjord
It can be as complex as "a fight against 20 goblins and 30 hobgoblins" or "a lich with a few magic items inside of their lair and plenty of darkness/cover"
After 5 at least, since that way you can still get your 3rd level spells heading into Tier 2 of play (~ levels 5-10).
Thank you Star
Also make sure you have the stats to multiclass in the first place
For a Monk/Cleric you need at least 13 Dex and 13 Wis
I do meet that criteria.
If you think you can handle it @worldly cipher go for it but if you can’t then that’s ok as well
Well I know I'm in newcomers. That's more because I feel really rusty. I've played a good deal before but the last time prior to the campaign I'm in now was probably 8 years ago.
Well I think you should be experienced enough to handle it
I've also multiclassed before but only fighter/thief and fighter/ranger.
But if you have more questions about it we are here to answer
But this channel is for new players
...Sorry? What channel should I be in when feeling rusty yet have questions?
I personally wouldn't overthink it too much. I feel like you're good with using this channel. Or #dnd-rules if there are specific questions about rules interactions.
I'd suggest asking in an appropriate channel in #1029833015423143957
ah sorry
hey im new to actually playing dnd and wanted to get into it is there a way to play online dnd with people
Sure is! At a minimum you need comms - Discord can do that. A popular tool is a virtual tabletop (VTT), various options there too but the top three are Roll20, Owlbear Rodeo and Foundry.
nice Ive always wanted to play but getting people togther is impossible in person
where can I get them
Roll20 and Owlbear are websites with free options. Foundry is a paid app generally recommended for folks that want all the bells and whistles.
Organising groups though this server is done through a set of channels where users post games or look for DMs, more info here: #find-a-game
Aside from here, you could also try LFG on Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
thank you so much im gonna look into them now and hopefully find a group eventually
:OOO
Welcome to the official D&D server. If you’re new to D&D check out #learn-to-play and the pinned messages here in the channel.
HIIIII EVERYONE!! (This is my intro lmao)
My name is Rute, pronouns she/they and I'm a brazilian d&d player!
At the moment I'm a novice and i struggle a bit with the systems, but I'm getting the hang of it! For now I've only played a few homebrew campaigns and it definetly grew on me
But what i ABSOLUTELY LOVE is the character creation, i have lots of fun writing and drawing my character's story, creating a design for them, it's my favorite part of it!
Hope i can also make some friends in here that could teach me stuff outside of homebrew, I'm willing to learn!
Welcome!
Howdy
Hey everybody! This is my intro I guess, I’ve played a lot when I was younger and irl games, I’d like to find some groups and some fun campaign. I’m down to play most campaigns as long as someone can walk me through character setup. Thanks for reading my ramblings 🤣
Check out the pinned posts for helpful links and #find-a-game for how to look for groups here.
Are there any tools or websites I can use to make and keep track of a digital character sheet that aren’t D&D beyond? If I have to I might be able to use D&D beyond but I’d rather find an alternative given how monetized D&D beyond is
Anything that would offer content that is not in the Free Basic Rules (read: SRD for third party providers) would be piracy and thus not allowed here.
If it's just about putting a sheet together by manually filling in information you have access to anyways, you could use google sheets
Good day, everyone, I'm interested to learn and play d&d, and relatively new to using discord, i search at GPT and it lead me here, where and how should i begin? (English is not my first language) Thank you for your time~
Welcome! If you haven’t checked already there’s a bunch of newbie resources in this channel’s pins as well as #learn-to-play , including a link to the Free Rules. I recommend reading through and making a practice character as you go along. I say to do this before joining a group because it helps set expectations for the game and makes it easier to join a group if you come in knowing stuff already. Of course, we're always happy to help with more specific learning questions!
If you feel ready, you can use #find-a-game to use this server to find a group. But this isn’t the only place to do so. Here’s some other ideas:
- Other TTRPG & DnD discord servers
- TTRPG & DnD social media groups (e.g. Reddit’s r/lfg)
- TTRPG & DnD forums (e.g. roll20, D&DBeyond forums)
- Local game stores & libraries
- School clubs (if you’re in school/uni)
Oh.. I'll check the learn to play and the rules first then! thank you so much, bless you starofthelight ❤️ I'm really looking forward to play to together with people 🙂
Hey im new sorry, I bought the crooked moon part 1 on D&D Beyond for my friends campaign, I know it comes out in 2 weeks but the master tier says you can use pre-orders 2 weeks early, am I just being stupid or what
Early access doesn’t apply to third-party releases. Also this would be a better topic for #ddb-support
ah sorry I literally just joined, thanks 🙏
Hey guys first time DM any tips how to make the game more fun for the players?
Talk to your players to find out what they find fun, and put more of those things in your game. That's easier said than done, of course, but there's no one-size-fits-all definition of fun, so communication is the first step!
any tips for a first time dnd player i have played ttrpgs before ex:utopia and i started playing a tiefling warlock
You can also just observe when they are having the most fun and respond to that by upping those elements.
Importantly, don’t forget to have fun yourself! You are meant to have a nice time too. And your enthusiasm will be infectious.
I have a list here (#dnd-newcomers message), which links to another list of mine.
tl;dr: Collaborate, compromise, and communicate.
I'm looking for a d and d group
Check out #find-a-game
What do i put on the dm screen?
Whatever helps you run your game.
There's no right or wrong answer.
The folks in #dm-discussion can probably give you a few recommendations.
I'm trying to find a d and d campaign to join
Have you gone to the #find-a-game channel folks have been directing you to?
Group recruitment is not permitted outside of the channels discussed there
Oh I'm so so sorry y'all 8 didn't see the lfg my bad
Hi I’m new to dnd could someone help me learn the basics pls
Welcome! #learn-to-play has some good info to get you started, but if you have any specific questions, fire away!
Thx just read through everything
I’m a little confused on how exactly the sessions play out
Also do you have to roll the dice for every action we do?
And one more thing
Are there groups where we can play a preset character
Cause I wanna learn what to do before making my character
Generally speaking, the DM sets the stage by describing the current scene.
Players control their single character within the story, and can decide how their character would respond as the situation unfolds.
Ic
Dice come into play whenever the failure or success of a character's actions would make a meaningful difference to the story.
Ah so not all decisions require a dice
Not necessarily, no.
or combat
Ic
Success or failure during combat makes a meaningful difference to the story, so yes.
So combat and imp decisions require the dice
And the imp decisions are decided by dm ryt
It's driven more by actions than decisions.
Ic actions which influence the story
Right
Ic think I’m getting it a bit
Have you tried this demo? It's a good example of how things work in practice.
?tag new demo
OH RIGHT. Bot's acting up today. 😅
Dang it
There's a link for the demo at the top of #learn-to-play.
This one: https://www.dndbeyond.com/begin/en
Epic thx
Have played D&D a long time ago so am basically new to the game. Looking for a community to potentially join, not just a single game. If anyone could point me in the right direction please feel free to reach out!
Best place to look on this server would be #looking-for-community You may also have some luck checking 3rd party sites like Roll20. Facebook, Reddit or other social media may also point you to a community server.
Any resources I could use to learn the basics of character creation and playing online?
And here's a good overview of how to play online: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online
Look under #learn-to-play it will have resources
My dm really decided to make a vampire horde on my first ever campaign, my character is currently unconscious in an alleyway
As for you: no the dice is used for certain actions examples are:
*combat
*any rolls that might be used to scare enemy’s sometiems
*investigating for clues
*persuasion or haggling
Hey all
Welcome!
I am fairly new to dnd. So I made a character sheet, whar now
If you're ready to find a group/game to join, read #find-a-game carefully as it has useful info and important instructions on how to use our Looking For Game channels.
Actually first question, I havent done anything else, do I need to do a specfici something first before getting into it?
Familiarizing yourself with the general rules (how and when to roll dice, what you can do on your turn in combat, your specific class abilities) is a good step!
See the 2024 Basic Rules here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
Oks thankss

You could just go with the tavern brawler feet. Allows you to use unarmed objects and like d4 for punching and kicking. When you have a state increase you could go with that. I don’t have the rule book on me at the time but that’s a feet.
I had tried to reply to a previous message but really I should quit trying to send stuff while at work. I really don’t have much of any data to text unless I’m in range of my WiFi
Hi everyone my son and I played in our first game yesterday. I was trying to find adventures league games near Riverside ca does anyone know where I can find some?
Check your local gamestores, they should have a D&D night
Some libraries even have events to learn to play!
If I’m waiting for one to start am I able to start a diff one then join the other? So play two campaigns at once?
absolutely. I run 5 campaigns and play in 2 myself
Nicee, any tips on what to use as someone who uses mobile? I wanna join some campaigns but I’m stuck. Also would a Gundam D&D campaign be good? It is copyrighted but I don’t think it’s heavily copyrighted, even though I think I’ll still check it.
There are mobile apps that go with the more popular websites, but that would highly depend on what sites / apps your DM uses. Check out the easy to follow steps in #find-a-game to find DMs or post what you are looking for. I am not too familiar with Gundam, but I dont think it would convert well.
The rules for D&D are basically there to help tell a certain kind of story: heroic fantasy.
The farther you get from telling that kind of story, the harder it will be to tell using D&D.
Thank you for the suggestion. I called all the game shops near me and that is how we played our first game yesterday the issue is the two games I found charge $15 each game to play. I was trying to find a more affordable option.
Thank you I'll check the library web site for my area.
Also we have #adventurers-league if you wish to check in with the AL community on this server - they may have more info
Payed sessions aren’t really the coolest thing I agree with you.
I got a dnd campaign that I want to do during the weekend but it needs 6 players. Idk if anyone wants to do it please dm me but, it's a wings of fire x dnd so I will send you the races that are in the campaign. This is my first time doing it. The starting to the campaign is a prolong this will give a fork on the road to help me out with the villain....(I would like to know what you picked for race and class) /This will start at June 20 at 1:00pm PT/
Thank you
Thank_you. You can't advertise looking for players in this channel. You need to follow the easy to follow instructions in #find-a-game
K thx
you could also put up a craigslist add or really anywhere online to find people in your area that are down to play, i've done it a couple times.
Thank you
Face book I haven’t used that but that be another option
Just created a character on DND Beyond, where do I go from here?
Now try to find a group to play with. Follow the instructions in #find-a-game
You could also share a link to your character in #character-discussion if you want to show off or have someone double-check it for you.
But if you do, make sure to open your character settings and set “Character Privacy” at the bottom to “Public”.
hey everyone, If i wanted to join a campaign as a new player where could a do that

You could browse through #looking-for-players and see what games are available.

Hello, I'm new to the game and already have a character made. I know some basic stuff, but need help with some and want to try a small game.
If you need any help, this is a good place to ask if you have any specific questions
If you're looking for a game, check out #find-a-game
Not a new Comer but I need help finding players for a campaign
The channel I linked above has instructions for using the lfg channels on the server
Ok
I’m new and would like to join ur campaign could u send me some details? Like when and what time
It's a in person D&D Campaign
Ah ok my apologies
It's ok unless you know were let's play games and hobbies is in Hanover
Negative I’m from Texas so no where near me lol
Ya it's ok
I went to the #find-a-game and saw the part about looking for DM, bu when i went to that channel it wouldn't let me interact to make a form.
i’m a complete newbie with pretty much no knowledge on the game whose up for the task of teaching
Read the instructions on the channel. There's a command you need to type to make a post
There are way too many new players each day for it to be reasonable or possible to teach each new player
Instead, check out #learn-to-play for useful resources to get started, and if you have any specific questions feel free to ask here
Does age matter when creating characters?
Thx
Can I join someone? I just joined lol
no, my gif, it was eaten, why 😦
Themberchaud will eat gifs for the good of discord readability.

Playing in my first campaign. My DM told me that my dice tower wasn’t decent enough and that’s why I kept rolling bad so I bought a nice rolling tray and DM again tells me I don’t know how to roll since I frequently low roll. I have four sets of dice all from different sellers.
Your dice probably just have stage fright, they'll come around eventually
Thats really mean of your dm. Your dice don't care about the quality of your tray or dice tower...
Im part of a d and d podcast and found this and was wondering if i can look for a game
You can. This discord has a separate space for that: #find-a-game
greatly appreciated
I had assumed that they had meant it sarcastically, but it's always hard to read tone from text.
What class are you? Clerics in my campaigns always roll low
Fighter Eldritch knight. Lvl8
Well, dice are swingy and moody. There aren't any ways to roll them right. Best luck to your efforts in the future though.
I’ve been having fun, even though my character died and was resurrected, I just wish I could do more in and out of fights.
I'd have a talk with your DM about that. Sometimes it may be warranted to switch out subclasses or even classes, or change the character you play.
These things may all be on the table in order to have more fun.
Get a Clockwork amulet. Lets you treat one of your attacks as if you rolled a 10.
As long as the DM is saying this in a non serious tone this should not be a problem. However if you feel like the DM genuinely believes in what they are saying I would consider finding a DM that is more willing to look out for you and what you want.
We have done that. I went from only ice spells as an ice dragon born to a half orc with very well rounded spells. Just sucked that our last fight started with a stealth roll of 2, then I used 3 inspiration and rolled 1, 3, and another 1 and tripped down the stairs knocking over our group down the tower into the fight 🤣
I also made half our group take 20 damage shortly before that fight because I tried to throw up a piton to the roof so our mate could tie a rope for us to climb up and rolled a 1 and it exploded into shrapnel
If you pick the Elemental Adept feat you could very well survive with only ice spells. I'd still choose a couple of spells that don't deal cold damage though. But as an Eldritch Knight fighter you might not even need that.
I don’t think she was being rude, but more it’s me that’s rolling low not the dice themselves.
I was elemental adept 🤣
That's... not how it works though. Unless your character has terrible stats you can't control the numbers you get. There's no way to roll dice correctly.
I’m +2 str, +1 dex, +2 cons, +4 int, +1 wis, and -1 char
Your Strength is pretty low though you can always improve that by leveling up. Your Intelligence is pretty good so your spellcasting should be fine.
I’m just hoping that with indomitable and relentless endurance I won’t die again
What level are you?
8
Hm, that is indeed a low Strength score for a level 8 fighter.
Regardless you don't control the dice. Your stats affect the results but there's no way to roll dice correctly.
Thanks. 🙏
I would not spend anymore money on dice and dice towers just so that you can roll dice the right way. Because that's just going to be a waste of money.
Maybe buy a dice jail tho
Just spend money on dice and dice towers if you plan to hoard them like a dragon. Like a normal DnD player.
Yeah it was a $20 Etsy 3d print dice tower. Then I got the box/tray I have and it holds 4 set. I try to rotate dice if they roll bad, and the dm has a few dice jails they lets us borrow .
I applaud the commitment to the bit, but that would be overkill for me.
I may switch the d20 for the lulz, but ultimately it's just a die, switching them out wont change the outcome in a meaningful way.
The main reason I stopped using the dice tower was since I died and was no longer a dragon born it felt weird using a dragon dice tower
Same. I'm not a dice goblin so I just use the dice set I have on me the whole game.

Are there DMs that run campaigns just for the sake of training newcomers?
If you are out there, absolute legends, please hit me up.
looking for the same thing
It's rare for such games to be hosted here, but if they are you can find them via the #find-a-game lists. Alternatively, there are paid newbie sessions occasionally hosted by wizards of the coast.
Technically those are hosted by Baldman Games, in partnership with WOTC.
They're part of the monthly Virtual D&D Weekend.

Hello! I always intrigued about dnd and am finally going to buy a starter set
Would it be easier to get the stormwreck isle and then the essentials kit? Thinking the pre-made character sheets would be easier
Any advice would help, or I just may get the stormwreck isle
When you ment paid. You mean we pay them to host those sessions correct?
Or am I misinterpreted
I've never used any of the D&D starter/essentials products. I think they're most useful if you're going into the game blind, and no one in your group has played before. If you just want something simple to try the game out before you fully commit to buying more of the rulebooks, you could consider using free options. The D&D Basic Rules are free on D&D Beyond, and so is the first chapter of Stormwreck Isle. Your group could play through a simple starter adventure before purchasing anything
Yes, that's correct. The DnD virtual weekend that spamandtuna posted above requires a ticket purchase to join.
Noted
@fallen surge Thanks! Yup kind of going in blind. Started playing baldur's gate 3, really enjoying it. My son likes to tell stories as he plays with his sister and cousins. He's just 11, at target and going to get the starter kit then
Same here brother.
It maybe easier for us with the pre-made character sheets
Going in blind.
(They sometimes have give aways of tickets, too! So sometimes it's worth keeping an eye out. I think the last time they did a giveaway, they gave away 50 free tickets.)
@umbral dirge a bit overwhelming
Elaborate
Pre-made character sheets can certainly make things easier if you're just starting out, but making your own character is a big part of the fun of the game. I wouldn't rely on them for more than a single game, personally. Of course, there's no wrong way to have fun, so if you're group likes them better, then more power to you. I just think you'll also really enjoy character creation
With kids, it's a bit of a double edged sword. Kids love making characters! But it's harder to get them to stick to the rules when you do so. So pre-made sheets aren't a bad idea if that's what you're worried about.
My son is the but what if, or that, or this type. Which is kind of like me. We may need some sense of direct ar first. 17 bux at target not too bad
He spent 50 bucks on brawl stars because he had grandpa buy him that for his 5th grade graduation.
Took him to a dnd yesterday at the library and he enjoyed it. We will try out stormwreck isle and if all goes good off to make our own characters! Thanks all!
Good luck!
Should be fun!

Nvm dumb question
If you feel like you've got a good sense of how the rules work, the next step is finding a game! You can get started with your search on this server using the link above.
Oh ty
Few months later and i still dont get how to play the game 💔
Have you read the rules? Watched some YouTube guides on the rules? Watched some live plays to see the rules in action?
Ive watched, yes... But i still dont understand especially since i have no one to play it with
I dont get the dice rolls too
Or maybe im just dumb 😭
Some times it’s hard to grasp the concept until you yourself have to do it. I get it Lily. You are not dumb. Your method of learning is hands on personal experience. Have you looked for groups here? Or on Facebook or Reddit? Hire about a local library or gaming store
Hi! I don't know what I'm doing or how to do it, so, I'll throw myself out here like my friend does when he's in trouble and hope for the best OnO'
dice rolls confuse ts outta me too! i watch games on youtube (i don't know ppl that play) and i still dont get it
Is the issue not knowing when to roll a dice or how the dice rolls work?
You want to do something that's got an element of risk, a chance of failure, the DM will ask for a roll.
You'll roll a twenty sided die (d20) and add an ability modifier, plus your proficiency bonus if it's a skill you have proficiency in. Get a total, tell the DM, they'll let you know the outcome.
question is anyone ever allowed to just sit in on sessions to get a taste of the game?
Sometimes, but it's not like there aren't a ton of actual plays on YouTube you could watch.
yeah i knew that just liked the idea of seeing it live/ being able to come up with questions that can be answered afterwards but thanks!
You may want to check out a community server that runs drop in or ongoing games. There might be one that is okay with you watching a game.
i’m pretty much brand new, i found this server on a whim, ill try and find one of those thank you!
We did our session 0, it was quite fun! We got 2 levels from a one shot where an old man sent us to retrieve money he was owed, turns out he just wanted to kill us and we stayed an ogre, and I found a magic Greatsword behind a brick.
Owa check #looking-for-community for communities that list having free to listen, etc
thank you very much for the assistance Mitcho!
Ask the Dungeon Master (DM) for in person play. I am personally generally fine with it as long as the watcher does not interfere.
However, it is MHO that you get more out of it by just leaping in and learning as you go. Some of my most treasured moments as DM are when newer players still fresh with imagination do what they are meant to do... tell me what you want to do not what you think the rules tell you that you want to do.
i just had a conversation with a DM yesterday and he gave me a rundown semi of how games can go, i sill am yet to make a character and want to do a lot more research before i jump in. Thank you for your advice Cal!

You learn the rules (linked above) and find a group to play with or find a group to play with and learn the rules as you go. If you're trying to join strangers, though, you'll probably have more success finding a welcoming table if you do some learning beforehand!
Time to read some rules for a few hours and put down some notes in a note block, yay! (I hate my ADHD!)
Where do I put that I’m looking to play? As I’m looking to join a campaign
#find-a-game here i think
Thank you ❤️
guys do I have to make my own spells and subclass??
Im looking through a forum for warlock and there's subclasses and spells but i haven't found any information on those so im wondering
No. In fact, I'd generally recommend not homebrewing anything while you're new
so should i just go straight warlock or is there actual subclasses i can look at
Without knowing what you've been reading, it's hard to say if those are official but there are many subclasses and spells that aren't available as part of the free rules
I believe there's only one subclass option available for free
But picking a subclass is part of playing a character. You would never not do that once you reach that level
curses
Subclasses are mandatory. You cannot play the game without them. However, you don't always gain a subclass at level 1. If you are playing with the 2024 rules, then every class chooses their subclass at level 3
"curses" is not the name of any official warlock subclass
I'm currently looking for a group but i just wanted a heads up before actually joining anything official
its just an exclamation i dont know what the free subclass is </3
the free subclass that is included in the base rules is the Pact of the Fiend

You can find a link to "D&D Free Rules" in this bot post above (under the Quick Links section)
yea im on the site right now, its just a little overwhelming lol
I can understand that. Don't feel like you need to memorize everything. You can always look up something in the rulebook while you're playing if you need to, and there will also be 4-5 other people at the table to help remind you of anything you might forget
So . . . Is every campaign here basically a sort of homebrew or like . . .? Because im not gonna lie, i might be cheffing with my character sheet rn
We don't host games on this server
So every game/community posted in our Looking For Game channels is going to be different
Some will run an official adventure module with little or no homebrew
Others will be comepletely homebrewed setting and perhaps other homebrew rules and options layered on as well.
Well what type of character you are chieffing
Not gonna sugarcoat it: Vergil specifically DMC5 vergil, well . . . Not really, but my scaly boy does Atleast have a uchigatana that is Basically a heavily watered down Yamato with manually balanced Attack stats, like the regular judgement cut doing 1d4, i would not include some pf his attacks for various reasons but depending on the move it would deal a different aet of damage
Like Judgement cut: finale doing 1d12 but needing like 5 turns of concentration to actually use and having like a 15 turn cooldown

Sounds like you might be interested in play a battle master fighter and renaming some of the battle master's maneuvers into Vergil's attack names! An uchigatana can be a renamed longsword in terms of stats and that pretty much gets you there!
Hi
I honnestly got nouthing to do this weekene since mu game wqs cancelled so i wantes to offer a small group sesson of teaching basic run down for charater start up like how the charater sheets work for d&d so on if any of you are i tereated i will open my dms to you all thinking doing thsi saterday around 1 pacific(weatcoast) time

Lol love that people here are actually stating this. There was a group that kept saying just build your character and we will play, if there's nothing you like then just look up homebrews, not helping at all not giving suggestions on where to start, and they would always make it out like I was holding up the group for not making my character. Like just make your character and we will start. Ugh annoying

I think you're unlikely to find a group that is willing to have someone sit and watch in the call. Especially so if you're hoping to ask questions as it goes along.
Thankfully there are plenty of pre-recorded games, referred to as DnD Live Play available to watch online.
Still haven't really made a character tbh. It feels daunting but I know its not. Adhd fueled anxiety, with fear of messing up. I've started a character sheet though thanks to resources here. ❤️
Highly suggest streams like twitch and sometimes YouTube. Best free place to go, and like Dosh Bones said YouTube videos.
Sometimes mods on twitch will be willing to help answer questions as the campaign goes
