Okay, so if it succeeds the enemy has to roll another wisdom save on their turn right? And if they fail they gotta wait again?
no if they succeed the spell ends
Typically if a creature fails to meet the save DC, they suffer all the negative effects. If they succeed, they usually suffer few or none of the effects. Each individual ability will tell you, either way.
Hi, this may be the wrong channel and I'm sorry if it is but I had a question, how do sessions work online? I know the regular game is tabletop and you can individually move pieces and see the map, but how does it work online? Would the Dungeon Master have some sort of program where you can see the map and characters? Or would it be all audible, where the Dungeon Master would just describe everything through voice? Again, sorry if this is the wrong channel to be asking questions but I'm really new and curious.
There are different ways D&D are played online.
For example, one approach is to play through theater of the mind where the DM simply describes what the character sees and everyone at the tables uses their imagination. Often having a bot handle character rolls.
Typically online games would use software called virtual tabletops (VTTs) that would display the battle map and tokens. People would often use this in combination with voice to talk between the players and DM.
And there are different VTTs out there: Owlbear Rodeo, Roll20, Fantasy Grounds, Talespire, Alchemy RPG, even Dndbeyond is currently working on a 2d and 3d vtt.
Thank you very much!

Question, how long does “one minute” last in battle?
So in a 4 person party if someone casts hold person it would hold that person for 10 turns?
Rounds, my bad, but yes
So after 10 rounds of it being cast, or the 11th round, the spell would automatically end
Okay so this is my follow up question, would the spell hold person be amplified if a second person does it?
No, only one person can hold someone else at the same time. There are ways to lengthen concentration like Sorcerer Metamagic
Unsure of any other ways, off the top of my head at least
Speaking of concentration would wild shape be a concentration breaker?
The second casting of Hold Person would be suppressed.
The effects of the same spell cast multiple times don't combine, however. Instead, the most potent effect--such as the highest bonus--from those castings applies while their durations overlap, or the most recent effect applies if the castings are equally potent and their durations overlap.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/spellcasting#CombiningMagicalEffects
Transforming doesn’t break your concentration on a spell you’ve already cast, however, or prevent you from taking actions that are part of a spell, such as call lightning, that you’ve already cast.

There’s some handy links there to get you started, but did you have any specific questions?
No, I want to play not read 🫤
You're more likley to be successful finding a group and game to play in if you're somewhat familiar with the game rules.
Don't have to memorise them or know them all - I still mess stuff up and I've been playing for years.
But doing a bit of reading and learning will help
Hey, new to DnD. I've been reading through my friend's Player's Handbook a bit and have come up with some character ideas. Not sure how they fit though.
hello
Hey
Nice! What are you thinking of playing?
Hey new folks! Check out the pinned messages here in the channel - lots of useful links to help get you started.
I've been thinking about a half-elf warlock that's just neutral and serves the Great Old One patron
Nice! Can be lots of fun - warlocks and their eldritch invocations.
Wasn't sure if that would be considered neutral since some people say warlocks have to be evil
Nah, plenty of tables don’t even use alignment.
I wouldn't worry too much about alignment - in D&D 5th edition it's more of a role playing prompt than a mechanic.
Oh ok, good to know 👍
No class is required to have any specific kind of personality.
Or race for that matter!
Plus, evil player characters require a certain level of trust and can be problematic if not handled correctly.
I’d say evil characters are uncommon.
Most groups want to be the heroes, so having someone in the group not on that same beat can be challenging.
Other groups actively want to tell a story about evil characters.
What matters most isn’t necessarily the type of character, but making sure that everyone has the same expectations going in.
Hi
a lot to take in
Ok, thanks for the info everyone!
Was bummed that Roll20 didn't have some of the patrons as an option on their character creator, do I need to buy the player's handbook there in order to make that>
I’m pretty sure you need to buy it there for it to be available in their character creator, yes.
Dang, alright. Thanks. I'm kinda new to the roleplay stuff. Are people expecting me to use a different voice or anything like that? Not really sure I can do that just yet lol
I mean we're all new here for the most part, so whatever makes you feel comfortable
That’s dependent on the table. If you don’t want to do a voice but the table expects you to, find another table.
It’s not a requirement to play the game.
can we call ?
True, okay. I'm sure I'd get to used to it eventually. You guys rock, thanks for answering all of that!
Roleplaying can certainly feel awkward at first, but it usually gets easier as you do it more!
There’s some good starter tips there.

my first campaign is coming up soon (this tuesday), and I'm excited as hell, but I'm scared of being annoying, or a bad player I want to be enjoyable for everyone, any tips on what NOT to do?
im new as well i domt even know how to start
i have a charcter sheet roughly built but thats it
dont be unprepared
read the basic rules, have a rough idea of how things run, know how to make a character sheet
if you're making a sheet beforehand, know what your character can do and what the sheet means
hey joe
hi hyveux
Hey is there a app where you can import character sheets for a campaign and it auto calculates outcomes for encounters?
I think DnD beyond does that itself but Idk
From what I read on the site it does something like that
The idea is to use TaleSpire for the map and to just quickly input values for dice rolls
ooh
It would also be nice if it had a character sheet database so it can pull up figures fast
you know like caracter x (who currently has advantage on strength checks who is blessed with guidence ) is making a athletics check vs mob y who has x number of points in athletics
whats the best way to truly get into dnd if youve never played the game, and only know the basics
Play it. That's my answer. Just jump in and play.
i dont really know anyone whose welcoming to new players
Try your local game store or library. If you are in school, look for a club. There are also groups in the #looking-for-players channel here that welcome new players.
So I got the handbook but like.. Is it normal that every other word doesn't make sense yet 💀
There's the Handbooker Helper videos, or you can look up D&D starter guides or cheat sheets.
Pretty normal, yes. Mr. Smith is right. Other sources often help explain things better to new players.
Oh yea thanks for reminding me!
I'm enjoying understanding bonuses rn thanks again for the reminder
hi, i'm new (obviously), i need me some help
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/116396810/8cJvVd this is my sheet
So i think the best way to learn is to play a game, tho are there any games that entertain newcomers?
Ok your stats are a bit off as getting a 1 is not possible
You should not have all them potions and magic items
i just selected some items i thought would be useful when making the character
beyond just gave me the ability to get those things
Equipment is set by your class
Yes it lets you choose them but unless a DM has said you can have them it’s normally just standard starting equipment
hang on i'll remove everything
https://youtu.be/vgXhB0YTS08?si=BWBHpQDlrmknc-Qh video on how to make a basic rogue on dndbeyond
Do I need to get the dnd starter set or the players handbook to start with?
No free basic rules give you everything to get started
Player hand book is just extra feats and subclasses
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/116396810/LzDsAM here is my revised rogue then
Better how did you get them stats
standard array
idk what you are talking about
This is what I see, it’s not possible to get a str of 1
It may be dndbeyond bugging out
you cant get an 18 with standard array together with 2 15s
Hi, I'm new to dnd and was wondering if there are ways to play dnd online for free?
There are yep! You can use things like Discord + dicebots, or owlbear rodeo or Roll20's free basic account and such.
?tag new online
how do i fix it
May be worth deleting and making a new rogue
Looks like a rogue to me!
Yes dnd beyond is free with extras behind paywall
Can someone create an online game so I can play (also it's my first time)
Please use the proper channels for finding a game - read #find-a-game carefully as it explains how to find games and has important information on using our Looking For Game channels.
How do spells with verbal components work do i need to say the spell name or do they work like harry potter spells im kinda new to DnD
Have you had a look at the Basic Rules and had a go at making a starting character?
Your character will say some magic words, but you don't have to unless you want.
So i can for example make him say the spell but reversed to cast it etc etc?
If you want to say Tloberif! when you cast a firebolt that is totally up to you. Go for it!
Ok thanks for the help
Does a Variant Aasimar Druid sound like a good starting character i was thinking of being more of a support role in my first D&D game mostly using wits for strats and problem solving
The basic concept sounds fine. One word of caution: the "support" role doesn't typically mean when it comes to combat you can simply sit at the back and throw useful spells. Make sure you've got a solid way to attack the enemy yourself.
Yea i do i plan on using animal transformation skill offensively and control flame i also have a spear
You should double check with your DM that they allow the variant aasimar; it's not actually intended for play and is instead an example of how to homebrew a race as presented in the DMG
Ok ill make sure
When do you use a percentile dice? Like the d10 and the d10 but in intervals of 10
When the rules call for it. Not terribly often, though a DM may use a table that will use a d100 roll from time to time.
i know basically nothing could someone help😭

thank u!
alr so the websites making me like a specific race
is it supposed to be random or can you choose your own
Your choice.
If you mean the demo, then it does choose for you.
In the actual game, you’d typically choose your own.
yeah thats what i was thinking aswell
Rolling a d10 and the other d10 confuses me because there’s zeros on both if you know how they work
The die with single numbers is your units. The die with two numbers on each face is your tens. Zero on all the dice represents 100.
And everything else is just basic adding, like 40+2=42 and then 60+0=60 then?
Yes.
Many thanks
Is there anything I’ll have to buy to start playing here?
There is not! The Basic Rules are free. That and the free content on D&D Beyond are all you need to get started.
Awesome, also is the graviturgy wizard in a specific book?
That's in the Explorer's Guide to Wildemount.
Thank you :)
Okay so I have a specific question about a move/spell the paladin has, I can’t exactly remember but I think it’s called wrathful smite, when this move is used it adds fear to the enemy, for a while until the enemy gets a wisdom save or such, two questions could the move divine smite be combo’d do to be a slightly OP move, and also when the enemy runs away the person who casted the spell should get a opportunity attack yea?
I believe you can combine Wrathful and Divine Smites, but the better channel to ask is #dnd-rules. As long as the creature is moving willingly, a nearby combatant would get an opportunity attack. But again, these are more rules questions.
Hello, I'm completely new to DnD as a whole but I've always wanted to get into it, anyone have any good tips??

Certain classes are more complicated than others so it would be easier to start off with a simpler class and character in general while you are still learning the ropes before overwhelming you with a bunch of additional mechanics and abilities. You also don't have to go all in on roleplaying with voices and can just do what you are comfortable with.
Sorcerors and fighters are pretty beginner friendly in terms of classes.
Okay, awesome, my main thing is I like to have a lot of strength and dexterity, so would a fighter be preferred for a starter in that case?
Yes, fighter would work great for that.
Awesome! And like you get to make up any backstory for them you want right? And like what they look like, what they wear etc.?
Yes.
Well, mostly.
It is a collaborative game so while there's a lot of leeway here for personal customization of your character, it's always a good idea to make sure it works well for others playing at your table/game.
Flavor is free, changing mechanics, not so much.
And rolling up at a table with a claim of having killed a dragon when you're starting at level one might strain credulity.
Okay, so like your character backstory can be vague like say, they have an arch enemy, and then depending on who you're playing with the exact details would come in later?
Usually most DMs and tables are looking for a bullet-point summary of why your character started adventuring rather than staying safe at home doing a normal occupation.
A lot of your character story will further develop as you play your character
Thats not a bad way to think of it.
Ahh gotcha, so just like any book series, character development happens along with the story, that makes sense
A good thing when making your backstory is to have the dm work with you so they can help tie it in to the story or world they have.
It is something some tables do.
Gotcha, awesome, I'll definitely keep that in mind
When making a character, your backstory does gives you a few mechanics/abilities since it relates to the background part of your character. The books have a list of backgrounds that give things like your character knowing an extra language and having some gold. You can choose one that best fits your backstory you have or work with the dm to make a custom one.
As a fighter, you also get to start with some armor so that would be part of your character's appearance, but you can flavor the armor to look how you like.
That's hella awesome, I hope I'm able to find a group I'd really like to get started on learning more
Good luck.
Good luck
Question: I know this is maybe a very tough question, but what would you guys recommend for a complete newbie to dnd? Where to start? What to watch/learn? How does anything work? I was really interested in the game for a few years now, but I haven't really learned anything because I didn't have a team to play with, so... I am a little overwhelmed with all of the information.

Feel free to give that intro demo a try.
Reading up on the basic rules gives you a basic understanding of the mechanics, but I found it easy to learn by watching JoCat's A Crap Guide to D&D
You don't need to know every rule before you start. Outside of the basics such as combat and character creation, a lot you can just learn as they come up such as how exhaustion or swimming works. I also mentioned earlier, but some classes are easier than others for new people starting out like sorceror and fighter.
I found JoCat's Youtube video on character sheets to be helpful.
I am thinking about getting mini's just because I would like to use them, but I think the mini's I see online are very expensive, I have no problem with the price of custom mini's like hero forge ones, but other mini's like a collection of goblins and the sort seem very expensive, so I was wondering what alternatives there were and could I 3d print them with them still being a good/okay quality?
I don't use minis at my table, I just got a dry erase mat and each character and monster is represented by a dice. Minis are nice, but they are pretty pricy.
They should still be of good quality if 3d printed.
18 goblins for €30? Alternatives to minis, use checkers with printed tokens stuck on.
You can get plain plastic disks cheap in bulk, and then it's just the printing. Go cheaper or have them done on photo paper for a better finish.

Hello
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.
- Get advice from your fellow Dungeon Masters in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building.
Hello
any tips initially for helping with the beginnings of a campaign? Is it super important to have a story idea beforehand or is it better to kinda improv from just a brief idea?
There are multiple ways to go about it. I think it’s best to run a pre-written first rather than homebrew something, but that’s only my two cents.
Have a story/plot idea ready so the players have a conflict to engage with.
Prewritten campaigns are a great way to start. You can aboslutely make a homebrew but it's encouraged to read the Dungeon Masters Guide and Players Hanbook ahead of time.
okay, I'll start with that. I really appreciate all the feedback, thanks!
I like this guide more than the DMG for actually giving you a sense of how to run things: https://howtogm.guide
Is there a player guide?
The Player’s Handbook, which is an expanded version of the Basic Rules.
yeah I would love any helpful link you all think of 😄
Prewritten adventures can be pretty fun and you can make your own changes to them and insert some of your own homebrew should you wish. I like to use adventure books as a foundation then build off of them and tinker it to my liking.
is Homebrew basically starting from nothing?
Thanks I'll check it out!
Homebrew is anything you make up. If you introduce a tavern keeper named Jim Bean, congrats! You're homebrewing an NPC!
It can be. But it is generally just making your own changes or adding your own creation
Can homebrew ever become official content?
ohhhh lol thanks for answering my questions. hopefully i'm not asking too many heh
i wonder if it might be better to be a player first before a DM, the last time I played D&D was in highschool which was 13 years ago lol
The short version is... probably not? Unless you can figure out a way to sell your content to Wizards of the Coast, the company that owns DnD.
It is certainly easier to be a player, but I started out as a dm first and it turned out fine.
Thanks for the help ill go read the players handbook now so goodbye.
Agreed with above. Being a DM requires a decent amount of extra knowledge, but it's definitely doable! Plenty of DMs in the server started their DnD journey as DMs, myself included. Sure I made a lot of mistakes, but the number 1 goal is to have fun!
Doesn’t make much difference player or DM, you would need to understand more rules as DM then a player. But it’s all play time experience
Yes a dm would need to know more vs pc
I literally know NOTHING! But I'd like to learn the ropes... any suggestions on where to start? 😁
Check out the pinned messages in the channel, lots of good resources there
I work 3pm-1am monday-friday and occasionally on Saturdays.. ive never played before, and I'm interested in learning.. anyone got any advice/suggestions? I'm in all new territory lol.

Well the first step would be reading the player's handbook. You don't need to read the entire thing but the first 4 chapters are very helpful.
The Basic Rules are free. You don't need to buy the Player's Handbook.
As long as you get the basic idea and have a thought about a character. Jump into a game and usually the DM will assist, u can always ask questions here for support
I found that learning the basics and also finding a local comic/game store that has in-person stuff can be helpful. My local store does learn to play sessions once a month. Things like that can make it easier to learn. I also really enjoyed the Handbooker Helper series from Critical Role, it helped break stuff down into bite sized pieces and make it easier to learn.
Thanks guys! Think I'd be able to get in on a game with the ridiculous hours I work? I feel like a connection with the whole teifling character, but as far as back story and all that, I'm lost.. i have never tried before, and I'm worried since I don't know anything, and I'll need help, I won't be good at it 🫣
Everyone starts somewhere so don't panic!
Honestly anyone can do it! Everyone starts off knowing nothing. The more you play the better you'll feel about it. No one is perfect at the game, its meant to be fun. You'd be surprised what days and times games are hosted, and they are hosted all around the world so you may even be able to get into one on Discord that plays at a time you're available.
Heyo, I notice that i dont see a looking for table channel. Do you guys know whats up with that, and which channel i can go to get into a game?
It's true! One of my games plays in the evening, US Eastern time, but I've got a player with a really unusual sleep schedule who plays with us from Spain. It might be a little harder to find certain time slots, but you'll be able find something with enough effort

Heya
Ehm I'm quite new and don't know where to begin^^
I was searching for D'n'D Groups at our location but could'nt find anything so we thought about maybe starting it online.
I've made a char on D'nD beyond i tried to read through the rules but im still struggeling and overwhelmed tbh. So if there is someone who could give me some advice on how or where to start that would be really nice
If you scroll up a bit, the Handbooker Helper videos are linked, they're quite useful. If you've got a character on DDB feel free to set them to public visibility (manage, settings, down the bottom of the panel) and share them in #character-discussion .

Hello everyone, semi experienced dnd player here
Welcome to the server!
semi experienced dm but first time online for dnd
thanks
If you have other questions, feel free to ask here!
Hello, so i have like no real experience playing outside of like 1 session at like comic con, but im about to join a group and am tying to create a character for it. Im thinking of making a hexblade warlock with the pack of the blade. What im not sure about is if i want to use a short sword do i actually need to have the sword or can i just use any weapon and have the pack of the blade feature make it into the form of a short sword?
Your pact weapon could take the form a short sword, yeah.
hi i have a question about combat
You might also want an actual short sword to use as your hex weapon.
But #character-discussion can offer more advice if you want to go down that path.
can anyone tell me what the die on weapons and enemy health mean if you roll d20 for attacks
for example the 1d6 on handaxes
When you want to attack with a weapon, you first make an attack roll to determine whether you hit or miss.
is that with the d20 or the specified die
So you’d roll a d20 and add any applicable modifiers, then the DM compares the total to the monster’s armor class (AC).
If your total equals or exceeds their AC, you hit and roll for damage.
So if you were using a handaxe, that’s where the 1d6 would come in.
and if im fighting lets say a goblin whats the 2d6 mean next to its 7hp
7 is the average of 2d6.
ive never played dnd before and im gonna run a quick battle with my bf in 20 minutes so im scrambling to learn everything i can
The DM can choose to use the average or to roll for it.
how im understanding what youre saying is that when you place an enemy you have to roll for its health or use the average
Yep
okay thank you
The monster’s attacks have the same notation. You can either roll or use the average.
i was panicking because everywhere i looked it was all talking about d20
mhm
and also when you roll to hit do you apply dexterity all the time or does it vary for weapon
Depends on the weapon.
and how do you determine what modifier you apply to a weapons damage
like what weapons use strength or dexterity
For melee weapons, you add your strength modifier to both the attack and damage rolls.
Melee weapons use STR.
Ranged weapons use DEX.
Finesse weapons you can use either, your choice.
Weapon type
For ranged weapons, you add dexterity instead.
If you’re proficient with a weapon, you also add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll (but not the damage).
actually yeah i have another wuestion again, so my bf is playing a bard and because of that has spells and cantrips so do spells use intelligence?
Charisma for bards.
Bards use Charisma as their spellcasting stat.
It varies based on the class, but each class will say which to use in its Spellcasting feature.
ya know from everything i know about bards that makes a whole lot of sense but why is that so hilarious to me
like game = shooting fireballs from a trumpet
to ritual cast a spell do you need to have the spell prepared?
For wizards, no. Other classes, yes.
About How long would would it take to learn the basics of dnd, I only know about dnd from overhearing short convos and some memes online and know pretty much nothing on how to play, set up a character or anything at all
That's hard to gauge, honestly. The Basic Rules PDF is lengthy, but if you're a player, you only need to learn a small fraction of it relevant to your character. (For instance, if you're a rogue, no need to read about any other class.)
so, if I'm playing a bard, and I ritual cast detect magic will it use up a spell slot?
Where would I go to figure out what class I Wana be
Ritual casting doesn't consume the spell slot; that's the trade-off for taking longer to cast it.
gotcha thanks so much
Skim over the options: https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes
you can watch live plays to see how people play the game, but ultimately I would say just hoping in a game and learning from the DM and players around your is the best option
^ I'd say you should try to learn stuff independently, as you'll stand a better chance of finding a willing group if you grasp some fundamentals.
that too
This article might help, too.

Thanks for the tips
i playing a monk and he relatively low and im new so like if i use martial arts can i then use my unarmed strike as a bonus action
help pls
🙏
hey does anyone know how to handle movement in combat
In what way?
does moving use up an action or no? and is there some way to balance movement not being an action?
It doesn’t use an action it uses your movement speed
Movement is its own resource, separate from action and bonus action
Most characters have a base 30ft
ah i see
Dashing doubles it and uses an action
mhm
i felt like moving a long distance wouldve been an action and i felt like itd be a problem with the confined space my encounters in
at widest the space is 35 feet
35 ft square?
so im gonna find a way to limit movement if thats the case
no its a rectangle so its a bit smaller
6 by 7
Would it break things if you even added like 3 ft to each side?
Or even one side, 10x6
i guess not
i just made the building a bit small befre i considered combat
7x6 is 42 btw
No worries just letting you know for your reference :)
also how is going up stairs handled
That I don’t know
is there any weird math or is it just normal
I’d assume you’d just define how long the stairs are
ill just handle it as if it were flat
You could do the hypotenuse of the triangle lol
But that’s rather tedious, I don’t see anything wrong with saying “there’s an (x) foot long staircase”
yeah imma do that
if you use all your movement in one turn does it recouperate the next turn or does it stay empty the rest of the encounte
ight thx
You also don't need to use all of your movement at once. If you have 30 movement, you can run 15 feet, cast a spell, run 10 feet, use your bonus action, then use your last 5 feet.
If you need a visual guide for better understanding here is one from the DMsguild: https://www.dmsguild.com/product/214803/Players-Quick-Combat-Guide
To get that bonus action, you need to take the Attack action first.
Using a monk weapon or an unarmed strike.
If you take another action or attack with a non-monk weapon, you cannot use the bonus action.
my guy died you were a little late on this 😭
we back on that character selection screen 🔥
Hey, can someone explain briefly how to make your own campaign
It depends based on your level of experience with dnd.
As in, running a pre-made campaign or designing your own campaign?
Designing
Are you new to dnd in general? And have you DMed before?
I wouldn’t recommend that for your first dming experience
Either way you could ask in #dm-discussion
I haven’t dmed before and i used to play with my friends, i like the designing part of it
We can continue this in #dm-discussion
someone take me under their wing

this how i feel bro 😭

When can I send files?
What files?
Ngl, I got quite a few characters.
Yea.
I have DND beyond and fight club app.
The only thing I'm not well versed in is the lore behind certain races and such but through homebrew, I'm pretty much a Jedi & shit.
If you're using D&D Beyond you can link your character sheet in #character-discussion

Do you have any suggestions for an extra language my character should know?
I've always been a fan of undercommon / primordial / deep speech
Thanks, ill look those up and choose from there!
Ask the DM which languages are prevalent in their campaign setting.
There's no point choosing Undercommon or Deep Speech if the campaign is pirates themed.
undercommon is common for the underdark / drow
primordial is elemental dialects
deep speech is aberration aliens
I went ahead and chose Undercommon
Is the bard able to attack or is it soley support
All classes can attack
Okay i thought so, just wanted to make sure, thanks!
just that some classes or subclasses are better than others
Ohhh, makes sense, i've always thought a bard would be a fun/funny class to be, so i chose that one
If you mean weapon attacks, bards aren’t very good at them, and will be very ineffective using them over spells, outside of specific subclasses
You can use them however
But also, they have offensive spells they can use that debuff or shut down enemies
That said, I don't think bard spell list has any spells that innately do attack rolls
Ill figure something out, even if its just an insult
vicious mockery is just that
Yea i picked that lol, seemed to fit the character i was going for

Is dnd fun? Never played…
"Fun" is subjective.
I find it fun.
I'm new too and learning the rules atm, if you would like, we could go over them together some time
Well we like it, wouldn't be here otherwise x3
Sorry just replying to this so I can look at it in a bit :))
I feel like it’s generally hard to get into as a new player, there are a lot of rules and mechanics. I know the DM’s are usually really chill and help new players learn but I wouldn’t wanna be a hindrance.
It’s pinned in this channel if you need it
I like meatball subs with cheese and spaghetti sauce.
Oh ok thank you!
That’s so real
That would be really fun, i havent yet learned anything since im a bit busy with school but i was planning too. Is it alright if i send you a friend request?
Go ahead, I'll let you know when I'm home if that's ok
I’m also a nacho kinda guy too, like spicy with the nacho cheese queso, some beans and grilled chicken, can’t forget the salsa or pico.
This is really off topic I’m sorry
No worries!!
Thats nice man
Brilliant! Have you had a look at the Basic Rules and put a starting character together?
Hey guys where can I find an easy starting character sheet to fill out? I’m extremely new and have kinda no clue what’s going on but I wanna try out dnd since it looks really fun :))
I just did the dnd beyond one like 30 minutes ago
It was a little confusing at first but im just slow
Oh ok ty!
Hey i got a question.
is a AC of 20 good?
very
ah alright thanks
basically how tough or squishy you are
Huh
higher constitution means more hit points
Ohhhh
like endurance in fallout or vigor in elden ring or whatever
it only gives you what it says it gives you
Would that mean a higher constitution
It doesn't say it gives that, so it doesn't
there is no relationship between being a dragonborn and your constitution score
For a dragonborn?
Just bought the Starter Set. Anyone struggle deciding between getting that or the Essentials Kit? I know they’re both very good and it depends on what you’re looking for but the last time my brother and I played was like 20 years ago. Starting DoSI soon!
Yeah :))
What colour dragonborn are you?
Crimsonwind or Onyx.
Ooooo yes that’s good! Ty :DD
And for à Silver or White one ? 😂
Argenti
That's good.
Hey really keen on joining a game been in the server a while
How would I go about that
using #find-a-game
it has instructions on how to do what and where to do it
Hello, I'm somewhat new to dnd... if watched a couple of campaign's and also played Baldur's gate 3... so my knowledge isn't the best... but I know there are books for dnd... Is it important to read those first? Or buy them in general?
The main thing you need to read is the players handbook which is officially available online for free as a pdf
Oh okay! Thank you

You need to rely on team work to make sneak work.
ok
Playing rogue isn't that complicated or difficult. The game is very forgiving in that regard
Is investigation skill good?
Don't sweat things too much
Yes it is, just have good stealth as minimum.
ok
If you want to ask specific character building questions, #character-discussion would be the best place to do so
ok
Have stealth, good dex and rest is up to you.
i do have it
Guys. Im only at stage of creating character. Can warlock have abyssal creature overlord and what sacrifices it usually requires?
What do you want the pact to be about?
Basically getting some magic abilities.
So fiend pact?
Why did you make the pact?
Back story: Forced to do pact or die in abyss. My character got into abyss(pit portal) and somehow survived by accident.
is my dex consider good i have 17+3 ?
So saved by a devil?
Yes.
Do you know about the blood wars?
Still didnt read, sorry.
This would be more suitable for #character-discussion at this point; that's our character discussion channel
Could be good place start too research for your character.
I recommend to read on nine Hells, Abyss, devil and fiends to get a better understanding then blood wars they are at endless conflict with each other. Devils and Fiends are different could help you greatly to get fundamental understanding.
Good day everyone. I am a new DM and so far i only have 2-3 players. None of them are playing a healer of any sort. How do DM's usually handle this? A DMNPC that is just there for heals? Stock them up on potions? How rare are potions?
Also. One of the players (a fighter, battle master) rolled for stats. He is pretty lucky are rolled high on alot of his stats and at level 3 he is already pretty strong. Our first session he had no fear of being hit by anything on the table and even 1 shot most of them. Should i forgo the intended stats of monsters to make it more challenging or just follow thru with true CR monsters and they might eventually give him a challenge?
D&D isn't like some rpg's where you necessarily need a healer, so not having a dedicated one isn't gonna be much of an issue.
Lot of the healing spells tend to heal less than what damage you might get from one hit from a monster, so killing the enemy is the best way to avoid damage
The latter question might be a better fit for #dm-discussion for advice
Hi, I'm creating my first character, do I still choose a skin color if he's a dragonborn ?
he?
USually the colour of the dragonborn decides the type of damage their breath weapon deals, but flavor is usually free so thats something to ask the DM
ok thx
Thank you @edgy onyx
Probably run the game as normal. You have 1 less player than is standard for calculating CR so a single strong character probably evens things out if anything. One thing you should keep in mind is whether one player outshadowing the others is leading to them enjoying the game less. Sometimes it's not an issue because everyone just wants to pick flowers or play support classes but still something to watch out for
Hello, I'm DM'ing a campain and I'm really new to DnD, how would you reccomend I keep the game interesting for my player?
Well always remember things may not go according to your plans so be ready to improvise and keep the moments flowing
Also remember your baddie is always on the move so don't be afraid to give an artificial time period of looming threat
Is there somewhere I can play DnD virtually on my own until I can find a group to play with?
Well, try not too unless they specifically do horrible decisions
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:

Good luck
Ok thanks again
Remember you want it tough but not brual
um hi, so, i literally have no clue how to play this game, can someone help me please?
i have question about ability score improvement do i add it to my stats as in if i have 17 in dex and i put in 2 would it be 19 for dex?
potentialy yes or you could do a +1 to a stat and antoher +1 to antoher stat
you cant raise it higher than 20 though
Like the stats themselves or your base roll
the stat themself
Ask the players what sorts of things they like/don't like. Incorporate that feedback. Easier said than done, of course, but that'd be how to start.
Same,I just started by creating a character
idek how to do that

Do you have any specific questions?
Does anyone have a good recommendation for a free roll 20 campaign I can run?
And a tutorial on how to use roll 20
Because roll 20 has not been the friendliest
Do you mean a pre-written adventure or game group?
Just going to ask if there is anyone doing a campaign for beginners as I have read through the players handbook
Pre written adventure
I already have a group me and my bf and I'm dming
And we don't have access to any physical maps or minis so we wanna use roll 20 to play
The Master's Vault is one I've heard good things about.
Mhm
It's come up often as a good one shot for beginners.
And any tutorials because I used roll 20 last night and tried learning for 2 hours and got absolutely no where except adding maps and moving the players to the maps
Might've been 3 hours actually
I'd recommend playing one shots before diving into a full campaign.
As you can use one shots to experiment and test out different builds to find something that you know you will enjoy.
Plus it can help you build a better understanding of what play and DM styles from other people that you are compatible with.
Let me see what I can find some useful videos.
Oh I’ve found my dream build already but I will take your advice
Feel free to share your build in #optimization or #character-discussion for feedback.
Ok
Hello...as an older player (played in the early 80s) looking to get back into it, are there servers for older adults in a similar situation? New to discord also.
You'll have to look for that specific parameter on your search
Check #find-a-game for online games
There are games are that are new player friendly (not age specific)
Given that roll20 has had quite a few updates, your best bet is going to be visiting roll20's youtube channel. CrashGem also has a youtube video series on roll20.
Being stuck on my phone kinda limits my ability to use roll 20, owl bear is more phone friendly I find
Most VTTs are not mobile optimized. Off the top of my head only Owlbear.rodeo and DnDBeyond's Maps are designed for and are known to work with mobile.
It really makes it tough for me to DM games, I can usually play as just a player no problem, it’s when I try to make a map that things get confusing, I really need to get a laptop
A computer would help. But as long as you can get voice and pictures, you can still run a game. Use a campaign through D&D Beyond, players can roll their dice straight into a shared log.
(And technically even pictures are optional)
is a Tabaxi WoTC aproved?
Yes.
It is an official race, if that’s what you’re asking.
Whether or not it’s permitted in your own game is something you’d have to ask your DM.
is it possible to build a tabaxi on D&D beyond, without extra purchases?
Only if the digital content is shared by someone who owns it and they have the Master tier subscription (typically that's the DM)
You can purchase it individually for $1.99
ok THX
any good combo's with Tabaxi, wich are most likely to make it to an WoTC aproved campaign?
Any race can be any class, so as long as you're using official stuff, you should be good. Still, you should always check with the DM what is/isn't allowed in the game.
👍
does anyone know of a better way then posting in the server to find a campaign to join? I've been trying for like 2 months now and I still can't find one to join
Are you only searching on this server?
yeah
Edit your post to not specify your age. Head to #find-a-game and read through the instructions.
I made a guide with other places to check out: #third-party message
Give that a read.
Srry
So, im just now getting back into D&D, Started looking into it over a year ago with an ex but thats been awhile. Was mostly wondering, for participating in campaigns or one shots and pretty much starting from scratch.... is there a comprehensive list that shows "This is what you need to start online, and Thisis what you need to know to start online". Just something basic for the "from scratch" players?

Hey I'm new to dnd and i have a question. When it's the enemy turn to attack... how to you make it happen? like does the dm just choose the actions or we do it randomly? idk lmao
The DM controls the enemies. The DM looks at the actions the enemies can do based on their monster statblocks
Like @cobalt frigate said you choose what action the enemies take by what would make sense for combat. Try putting yourself in the enemies shoes. but if you want to go deeper with that you can always take into consideration monsters intelligence and take action based on that. For example if your monster has a fairly normal intelligence he probably wouldn’t attack recklessly if he was low on health he might pull back and try to use range only attacks if they have them or they might try to run away. If they have really low intelligence they would probably just attack recklessly in close quarters with no regard for its own life. You can also add a sense of randomness by rolling a d4 or d6 (depending on how many players you have) for what player it attacks. Sorry for the long post hope this helps
okay thanks, dw it helps
Hello
As it seems in my badge that i am new in d&d
And i want to try this game with my friends
Who are also new to d&d
So i want to be a dm
But i want something easy to learn and to follow and simple
Like there is a previous written story and characters
Plenty of them. There are the official adventures (https://www.dndbeyond.com/marketplace/adventures) as well as unofficial ones on sites like DMsGuild.
So can anyone help me with that
To try something
I watch few videos and learn the basics but to design a character is pretty rough and there is alot of elements to keep up ( weapons - magic spells - items - languages...etc )
Is there very simple version of d&d 😅
Maybe read through this: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1625-peril-in-pinebrook-a-free-introductory-adventure
Thanks for the help
But i can't buy this right now
And sorry again for asking but is there like a pdf or something ... i don't want physical game
Read the link above. #dnd-newcomers message
Ohh thx that's what i am looking for
.. thanks again for help 😀
what if a druid tries to shapeshift in a huge creature in a space he cannot fit because he has allyes and enemies around?
can he do it or it must transform in a creature that fits the space?
A good #dnd-rules question.
you are super right
Hey so I have a weird question
So tiles are 5x5 right?
So does that mean the area of 1 time is 25 feet
Or is it the area of the 8 tiles surrounding that tile that's 25 feet
I'm asking because I'm gonna be using roll 20 and I wanna get the proportions of things right on my map
Hi! How do I find one-shot adventures that are open to newbies?
Maps' grid is usually 5'x5' unless they say otherwise.
Check #find-a-game for games.
If you're looking for an adventure to run as a DM, I'd recommend the DMs Guild for both free and purchasable one-shot adventures
This filterd search should give you a good array of low level adventures to pick from
not sure if your question was you looking for a game to join, or an adventure to run for your party
Haha yeah all goods
Besides the channel OldMan linked, you can also look on the various Looking-For-Group (LFG) subreddits, facebook pages and Roll20
appreciated ❤️
Yes, everything from there is just basic geometry
I failed geometry so like... Ummmm
Also does anyone know what the "+4 to hit" means on the goblin creature description on beyond?
Does it mean that whenever the goblin rolls to hit it gets plus 4?
Yes
Ight thx

hey so im testing out npc attacks in roll20 and for some reason it looks like my goblins rolling with advantage. anyone know why this is happening?
Hi everyone
With the D&D 5E by Roll20 Sheet, the default sheet settings has Advantage set to always rolled for convenience purposes.

You'll just need to toggle it off.

Ok fellas, while I may not be necessarily new to DnD, I am new to a few classes that I have not tried. Mostly pure casters, I’ve done half casters and multi classing into castors purely for the magic but currently I’m using a wild magic sorcerer and I have a basic idea of how to use it (use sorcery points to enhance my spells) but like anyone have any tips or tricks?
You use your meta-magic:Quicken Spell and meta-magic:Twin-spell to essentially cast more spells in one turn and hit more targets.
For more tips I'd recommend asking in #optimization
I have transmuted spell was that a good choice
That one’s pretty bad. It can be decent but most dms won’t tell you what damage types are better against certain monsters and there aren’t a lot of enemies where it matters anyway.
What’s your stat array like?
I can’t show images here
Uuuh hold on lemme type it out
Hp 12, strength is -1 dex is +2 con js +3 int is +2 wisdom is +1 and charisma is +4
Ac is 12
Also they’re wild magic and varient human
I think I calculated the HP wrong

Wow this is so niche that’s amazing lol
Perfect
For playing online best bet is an lfg reddit or find a game channel here. For irl you can see if your local game store runs games.
None of my irl friends are into anything nerdy like me lol and I think id be too intimidated to do anything with strangers until I learn a bit lol
if you have a birthday coming up thats a perfect opportunity to con a friend or two into joining you at an open-table night at a local game store or convention
Watching dnd shows can be a great way to learn how stuff works without putting yourself out there. I’d recommend dimention 20 since it’s easily the most enjoyable to watch imo.
I’ll take a look
Just remember they’re professional entertainers so actual dnd might not be quite as cinematic
Game shops are solid place to try out dnd in person as they have a financial incentive to to get more people to enjoy the game.
For playing online, there are plenty of places and different ways to play dnd.
Not to mention that there are quite a few different virtual table tops out there.
hey so im trying to make multiple of the same enemy in roll20 rn and whenever i do so and drop one of the tokens health all of the tokens health drop, and im wondering if its because im using the character sheet and if so is there a way i can use the same sheet but have each tokens resources be seperate or do i have to manually creat multiple sheets or is there some other solution
The folks in #third-party might be able to help.
alright thanks ill check in their, btw sorry for asking so many questions in such a short time, im just scrambliung to learn what i can to get a campaign started as soon as possible
It's because you have the token health direct tied to the character sheet HP. Just manually type in the correct health and that will fix the issue, do not select anything in the drop down menu.
Nothing to be sorry about. Questions are the whole reason this channel exists!
It's fine to ask questions. For best results, it's always recommended to ask in channels where the question is the most relevant.
Hello, so I’m completely new to dnd as a whole and everything I know comes from very little research that amounted to not much (it was pretty overwhelming) and the few dozen hours I’ve put into bg3 on the pc. I see a lot of the stuff on dnd beyond has a price tag on it for obvious reasons, so a big question I wanted to ask is how much would I have to spend to be able to play a dnd game? Ideally I’d want to play tabletop but I don’t have real life people who’d want to play so that’s not an option at the moment so what all would I need to buy to join in on a campaign, if anything?
Sorry for the wall of text btw
you dont need to spend anything to get started playing
the basic rules, which are linked in the pinned messages of this channel, are free
Ah okay. I imagine a lot of people use the dnd beyond site to make their character sheets if they’re playing online right? If I wanted to join a group here, that is
It’s common but not essential.
yep a lot do
Alright then. What would be the best way for me to start then? I tried tinkering with the character sheets on beyond a bit but I had not a clue what I was doing.

Can I become a dungeon master even if I usually play as a player
i am cunfusd how to add a homeberw to my carter on the wbsite
Sure, so long as you’re not expecting to DM and play in the same game session.
Okay thank you
i dont play baldurs gate
I don’t believe homebrew is something you need to purchase, but we have #ddb-support if you’re having trouble with D&D Beyond.
Anyone can become a Dungeon Master. For new DMs, it's often recommended to use a prewritten adventure to make it easier to get the hang of things.
thx
Okay thank you
On DNDBeyond, you need to have a subscription to add other people's published homebrew. That said, you can make your own for free. That also said, it's better to get to grips with the 'vanilla' game before getting into homebrew so you have a better idea as to the impact it can have.
Are you a old man
What?
how do i actually play d&d

OLD MAN OF WISDOM
i guess i make a character
I don’t understand stats
basically... you have to have a group
What I did is I googled all the species and just went off from there
where do i find group
I mean you don’t need to have one first, in my opinion

Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you don’t have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
you can't really play DND without a DM at least. Otherwise it's just writing a story with yourself
im gonna make a character with the uh d&d beyond thingy
In my opinion, don’t worry to much about finding a group to much, but ofc try looking for one
Can you play chess with yourself?
what if they dont like new players
conflict of interest
then it's a group worth avoiding, IMO
yes it very fun
Dnd beyond has a free adventure for new DMs called Intro to Stormwreck Isle.
there's plenty of digital dice rollers
but yes you will need some manner of random number generation
I play DND during lunch at school
Does a paper one work
only 1 hour is a bit too short for meaningful DND
milestone or xp
uh... likely to get discrepancies in true randomness
you can simply set it to whatever your future DM will be using, so don't worry about it right now
Us middle schoolers can do so much in 1 hour
oh
Is that a yes
I would not trust paper dice.
If you don’t have a group yet, you’re making a character for practice, so your choices are really just learning the ropes.
more of a no
it's likely to get uneven probability which would be bad
Okay
I recommend a digital dice app instead of folded up paper dice
Does a marble with drawn on numbers work
no
you can probably find some cheap dice in a local game store or just use a free dice roller app
You can get a set of actual dice for like $10.
I’m in a strict immigrant Asian household,
My mom would kill me if I got those
i wanna be a monk
We can’t have our phones out on campus
What’s that
Go for it.
Then just use digital dice.
A monk specializes in martial arts, basically.
No tag monk found.
I can’t have electronics on school campus
The classes are briefly described here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1047-d-d-101-a-quick-breakdown-of-classes-in-dungeons
Woahhh
in-hour DND doesn't tend to work for the time limitations and rules outside of it
Okay thank you
Does 3 hours work
The DM is new too
If you're using dnd beyond to DM or play, the website comes with digital dice.
Okay
I think, ideally, two hours is the minimum for D&D, but if you’re playing as part of a school club or after-school program, you may not have that luxury of longer sessions.
For clubs at my school, it’s around 2-4ish hours max
guys what does do the abilities do

hey so how do i pick the fist option for equipment
You don’t pick fists for equipment. You just have them.
oh awesome
As a monk they will appear as unarmed strikes.
unarmed strikes is just stuff like headbutts, shoulder checks, punches, kicks, etc
whenever you wanna injure someone by battering their body with yours, unarmed strike
i cant wait to punch a random thing and make explode
Karate chops! Eye gouges! Foot stomps!
they don't make things explode

im gonna see if i can find a dm
If u do lemme join
Heyo
Heyo
Trying to get back into dnd. SO just joined
Im tryna understand dnd so i joined
Fair. Its a lot easier than it looks or seems
Yea i hope cuz it def seems like alot of remembering
Nah nah. A good dm will usually let you know what you gotta do in a situation. Like what skill check you need
gameplay also makes things way easier to understand imo
You don't need to memorize all the rules. Just read the first four chapters on character creation and learn how combat works.
Damn I didnt even do that. I just learned on fly
Same
I mean if you are just a player. However if you wanna dm thats a whole other story
Don't put the pressure on the DMs to teach you everything. Learn ahead of time.

True
Not everything but basics. ANd always ask dm if they are willing. DOnt expect them to just teach you out of the evilness in their hearts
At the very least it's important to learn how your character works.
The way most DMs see it.
If they're going to spend hours prepping a session for their players, as a simple courtesy, the players should spend some time to learn the basics and understand how their character works.
Fair enough
monks seem pretty cool
Monks are killer
same
I usually play sorcs but been wanting to try out oath breaker paladin
i think i get it
Im trying out a fighter next time i play
how do i find a dm
I gotchu
make a post in #750812887697588356 by using the instructions in #find-a-game, and some patience
that and you can find other forums or discord servers or otherwise locations to post in looking for a group
It's not easy. But there are lfg communities on reddit, discord etc. You gotta fill in applications and hope to get lucky
Question, when it comes to Avrae, is that something that the DM already has integrated on the server? I know its a Discord bot and as far as i know, thats how they work is per server. but mostly trying to ask if theres anything i need to do on my own end thats Avrae related
There are no D&D games run on this particular server, so you don’t have to do anything with AVRAE here before using it in your own server
Hello, i have never played dnd before but im very interested where to start
Any guides amd how can i find my first game
and i would assume any/most dnd servers i join would have it integrated?
im brand new as well, been getting good info from the dyno bot posts in here as well at the Critical Roll help videos
That is very much a per-server basis. I don’t know if I’d call it that common. I’ve been playing for 5 years now and only 1 DM I’ve played with actually used it.
if they’re intended for playing games they more than likely would

Might be late as of now, should get some sleep soon but I really wanna get into DND but have no clue how this stuff works

Have you looked at the free basic rules

are there any solo campaigns
By 'solo' do you mean one player, one DM, or one player, no DM?
one player no dm
D&D isn't designed for that style of play, so not really
There are supplements that modify D&D for solo play, but at that point it's less D&D and more "choose your own adventure"
ok
new to dnd, playing as a 3lvl rogue, chose swashbuckler as the rest of the party are spell casters (wild magic sorcerer, artificer and a life cleric), think I chose well to get more consistent sneak attacks
i just realised dnd is 50 years old
Hey new player haven’t started a campaign yet, my gf convinced me to play, I made a character she’s a fox aasimar mix, runaway noble, good savings, can’t fight, just heals and she’s weak so I wanted to give her a mount seeing as she would tire easily but I don’t know if that’s something I can do, and if it is what’s the limit on creatures for a beginner?
Gonna say it sounds like there's a lot of stuff going on there that's kinda outside the 'basic' D&D experience
For example, the game kinda assumes everyone in the party can and will fight
Definitely get together with the DM and see what can be done.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#MountsandVehicles
You can purchase a mount if you like.
Okay, but if you're a new player, it's often a good idea to stay close to the basic rules
Even more so. Hard for us to advise if it's not by the book!
For example, it's a good idea to not make a character that requires certain pieces of non-standard gear to function
Eg making a character that requires a mount because they "tire easily"
Yeah we’re only doing minor changes, like custom races, and leniency with stuff but aside from that it’s very close to standard rules
Well she doesn’t “need” one I just thought it’d be cool
#dm-discussion can help out with any advice on DMing. If running a prewritten campaign, search for it n #1029833015423143957 to see what others have shared and talked about on it.
She’s not used to being in the wilderness so I was just thinking like a horse or something to help with supplies and walking really far distances
That’s why I’m asking if it’s too far
Mounts are definitely a thing you can get
Pretty common for most adventurers, to help travel long distances or carry gear.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#MountsandVehicles
Okay thanks that’s all I wanted to know 🤷♂️
Should it be left for in a campaign or would it be fair for her to have bought one beforehand?
I know one PC who had very low strength (so her carry capacity was low) who had a riding dog 'mount' who really only carried her bag through dungeons.
Mounts are fairly 'squishy' though, so be careful about involving them in combat.
That's more a discussion for your DM. Mounts are expensive so the assumption is you must buy one, as it's not part of starting gear.
Only your DM can answer that, but generally speaking you don't get free stuff because you wrote it into your characters backstory
Aha, good luck! Have you made it clear what level and requirements you have for character creation? Got your Session Zero checklist and safety tools planned?
Yeah I mean she’s the party healer so she mainly just stays out the way or hides as her big dragonborn gf fights everything for her so yeah I was just considering a mount to carry her supplies like tent and blanket to save on extra weight
Got any players?
Okay I’ll have her buy the mount in the campaign then it’ll be easiest
D&D isn't really designed around characters not getting involved in combat offensively at all so that might cause issues
The concept of a 'pure healer' isn't really a thing
Well she will be involved and she will learn how to fight more and more
She’s just not very good yet
She’s only been away from her Noble family mansion for a few weeks so she’s learning to fend for herself
I think it's better to have more damage overall over healing, as healing is a precious resource, something like that right?
It's just so you're aware. I've had players want to try the pure pacifist healer route (and have tried it myself in other systems!) but sadly in 5e, healing doesn't have enough oomph to it to really stand on its own, so we don't want you feeling like your idea isn't working.
Between healing and say, certain buffs and crowd control, you can definitely feel like you're contributing.
Plus the campaign type we’re doing is heavy rp and exploration with some combat
I'm not talking about anything being 'better' or 'worse'
Just the general assumptions the design of D&D makes
Should work I think
She certainly won’t be one of those useless princess types but the idea is she needs to grow as a character and learn how to survive
Anyway I just wanted a bit pf advice on the mount thing and what the norm usually is, the rest I’ll discuss with my dm
Sounds fair. Hope you have fun! Remember to embrace failure. It is through hardship that characters grow.
Thanks guys and thanks for being patient with me lol
Sounds like you've thought about this and have a goal, and it can definitely work out. Also sounds like you have good communication with other players, so chatting about how everyone feels and ideas about what direction to take things will really help out.
I’m still very clueless about it all but I’m excited to start my first campaign
So I wanted to get as much planned as possible
You can also ask in #character-discussion on some more in depth tips on how to try and make certain concepts work, like tips on how to maximise healing or how to be pacifist and still contribute so on
Like me and my gfs characters are dating so we’re doing our own side roleplay to figure out the backstory to it so that they’re already established and don’t take focus away from the main story
Same here, had to browse through all the rogue archetypes as I was falling behind at lvl1 and 2 XD
Does the custom race sound a bit wonky though? I originally planned just Aasimar but I really wanted a fluffy eared kitsune type character but I can’t do that so I discussed it with my gf and her background just has her mom being a kitsune type race so she’s mixed
From what I read the appearance is totally customisable so her race is the same just looks different without any benefits it’s purely cosmetic
Ie you could describe your character as having fox-like features without any mechanical changes
However, it still needs to fit the world your DM has made
Yeah luckily we don’t have a campaign set yet and me and my gf are hosting and my friend who’s a dm is probably going to dm for the game so then it’ll just be the remaining players to be onboard
If DM approves and can mingle it in with the rest of the lore, it should be fine
Then these are all questions that should really wait until you're set up with a campaign
Yeah it’s all purely discussion right now
I’m sure things will change I just wanted some rough ideas and possibilities
The problem is all these questions really kinda boil down to "Ask your DM"
But as for 'wonky' if you're not making any mechanical changes you won't be unbalancing anything rule wise, so there is that.
Yeah well anyway thanks so much for the tips and advice and again being patient
i just got done making my character what do i do now
Now it sound slike you need to find a game.

o boi
There's the find a game channels here, and also other places- r/lfg on reddit, the game finders on VTT platforms like roll20's looking for group, so on.
In person also check for local facebook groups or check to see if meetup.com has any. Local game stores are a big one to check out, even if to ask if they know of local groups if they don't host.
or kidnapping friends and playing a oneshot with them.
It can take some time, and one of the first big hurdles. It's a bit like online dating. You are going to spend multiple hours a week (usually) with these people, so you want to make sure you all vibe well, and it can take time to find or make that.
Also sadly some online groups are a bit flakey.
Looking into oneshots, Adventure League and westmarches (feel free to ask what these are) can be a good way to join lower commitment games and see if you find people whose play style clicks with yours, and then you slowly network and form a group together from recommending each other to games.
Or you can be lucky and hit it off with the first group you join.
Communication is a key part of all of this and session 0s and chatting with the DM before joining can be a good way to feel out if you all suit each other before commiting to a game.
that is a great idea atcually
1 sec
im currently dragging my friend
