if anything you’d want the resistance before you get low health😭
if you’re low on health, chances are the resistance won’t even help
But those attacks are really common how does that not help
it’s better to attack with your action in order to prevent further damage.
Blade Ward stands as an alternative to the dodge action, when it comes to taking an action to reduce incoming attack roll damage (as attack rolls most commonly deal bludgeoning pericing and slashing)
Blade Ward overtakes the dodge action as the optimal choice at around level 14 when NPCs start getting such high to-hit modifiers you're better off just reducing the damage they deal than avoiding the attack roll entirely
Before then however, just dodge
The math varies drastically from character to character, and situation to situation. I just know the average optimal choice is the dodge action, until level 14
I'd hit up #optimization , this is well beyond newcomer stuff

Okay so quick and slightly dumb question would an astral elf PC be allowed in a majority of 5e games or is that a strictly up to the DM question
up to the dm
alrighty ty ty!!
Is the only way to hit a critical to roll a d20? On an attack roll or damage roll?
i believe u auto crit on incapacitated enemies
Critical hits are a result of attack rolls only, not damage rolls.
The number of dice used for the damage roll is double when a critical hit occurs.
To the best of my knowledge, there is no damage roll that involves a d20. If there was, however, rolling a 20 on it would have no special effect.
i cant find this in the basic rules
what source is this?
would anyone be interested in doing a short campaign for brand new players only over discord as just kind of a one time, get your feet wet kind of experience? I feel like you can read the rules all you want but won't be able to really get how it works until you actually get hands on experience. I would be down to DM as I'm planning to with a group of friends in the future. I bought the starter set to dragons of stormwreck isle and was thinking we could just do a chapter or so to get a feel for everything. Send me a dm or feel free to reply with any suggestions if interested
hello ! i hope everyone doing okay , im new to dnd and like i dont know a lot about it i have like a coupe of questions like do i have to like make a map or someting and buy dices hoever you writte it .
@dapper stream yeah I’m new I haven’t even played a campaign
same here lol watched these guys play online through a series called "son of a dungeon" and was like wow this actually looks really fun
That’s true of paralyzed and unconscious creatures.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/appendix-a-conditions#Unconscious
Any attack that hits the creature is a critical hit if the attacker is within 5 feet of the creature.
Those conditions also incapacitate.
But it’s not generally true of incapacitation itself.
Do you know anyone experienced that would wanna play
Check out #find-a-game
If you’re looking for a game to join, #find-a-game can point you in the right direction.
got another questions can orcs be warlocks
Sure.
Thanks
yeah was thinking about doing that but just wanted to put it out there in this thread first to see if there would be any interest
You can choose a race and class in any combination you like.
Isnt that only autocrits against unconscious
and Paralyzed
I’m afraid such requests are only permitted in the #looking-for channels linked in #find-a-game.
I’m a lil confused on natural and unnatural roles
A “natural” roll is the number on the die itself.
So a “nat 20” or a “nat 1” means die shows the number 20 or 1.
Ok so what’s an unnatural roll
It’s possible for the final result of a roll to equal or exceed 20 after any modifiers have been added.
the roll once modifiers are added
Some refer that to be a "dirty 20"
Such results don’t qualify for things like critical hits.
if for example on an attack roll you roll a 19, with a modifier of +1, thats a nat 19, unnatural (or dirty) 20
None of those are official rules terms, though.
Oh ok
a critical hit/miss only happens on a natural 20/1
Do I need to buy anything other than the dice I already have and the handbook on dnd beyond
The official wording for a critical hit is simply:
If the d20 roll for an attack is a 20, the attack hits regardless of any modifiers or the target's AC.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#Rolling1or20
nope
How do I become a dm cause don’t you need like a lot for that
The Basic Rules cover everything you need to know to run the game.
Ok
Though the Dungeon Master’s Guide offers plenty of additional options and advice.
Head on over to #dm-discussion to ask for advice.
There are also plenty of adventure books you can use.
They each outline a full campaign you can take your players through.
Thank you sm
It’s also possible to start with your own self-made campaign, but that often takes a lot more effort.
Especially for newcomers.
You could check out the free Lost Mine of Phandelver on D&D Beyond, though:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/lmop
Whether you choose to run that or just want an example of how the adventure books are typically set up.
Hi, im new to the discord i've only done dnd irl. If i wanted to start here should i make a character first?
There are no games played on this server.
Check out #find-a-game to find games that people are hosting.
Yea probably
I would be interested
I’m down
hi i'm new to dnd i'm searching a character sheet but I find them only in low resolution, can anyone help me?
What exactly can I help you with
if you have a character sheet in high resolution or maybe you know where to find it
I don’t have one in high res
But I can maybe find one
I found a few just looking up character sheets for dnd online
Have you downloaded it from the Wizards website?
i tried to download them but then they're in low res
no i'm gonna try
Question, I've been applying for games on here for about 2 months. Only got 2 interviews, and the one game I've joined I was back stabbed both games by a player.. So what am I supossed to do here. Im asking cuz I'm thinking of just getting a new hobby at this point...
Im sorry, what do you mean by backstabbed
was first to attack a dragon last game. Charactar asked to cast command on me to make me stand there. Just becuz
almost died
Like are all games this crappy
Player vs player (PVP) is generally frowned upon (unless specifically called for as part of a longer campaign) or outright banned (as in organized play such as Adventures League), so i would say your experiences are rare, and seem to involve toxic players
DnD is a collaborative improv game, the team work is sort of the point
I don’t know how u stumbled upon two games with bad players (and DM for allowing it) but it seems like terrible luck
I really dont wanna wait 7 days just to feel bad again.
This is something to bring up with a DM to see if PVP is allowed
I did. If i die I can make another person
Is there anything more to the situation? Some player just randomly decided to cast command on a party member to kill you?
XD If you've VC;d me you'd know it's likely not anything to do with me haha
Im a backround player
Whats a background player
Ok, i dont know why that would make anyone “backstab”, so it seems like you had some bad luck with a toxic player and bad DM
Sure thing. Look for a local Adventure’s League, which is a more structured play experience designed for drop ins and newer players
There are more rules in place to guard against that stuff
Thanks, maybe anyother time. Imma take a break i think. at least for today. Really had the wind taken from my sails
Sorry to hear about the nasty experience, that's never fun. Sadly D&D can only be as enjoyable as you and the group you're playing with make it, I hope in time you'll find a group that just clicks. Good friends and understanding players can make this one of the most enjoyable hobbies, best of luck ❤️
Hello, I’m really trying to get into DND and I’m just looking for advice/ a group to possibly start a campaign with. I’ve heard some rumors of ways to play online.
Hello, I’m new to D&D and I’m looking for some people to play with. I have a few friends who are new as well, but some who know how to play. We are looking for more people to start a campaign and we are also looking for a DM.
Dont have much to add but welcome to the hobby and good luck
@lyric fjord id be very interested in joining you all if you’re in the need for a bard.
Heya there! There's a variety of ways to get started in D&D, here's a few that I'm savvy with.
Roll20 is a website that many people use to play D&D through, there's also a 'join a game' section where you can browse other games that are looking for players to join in on. I believe there's also a filter you can tick called 'newcomer friendly' or something similar so you find games and people that are happy to show you the ropes!
There's many different discord servers, including this one, that have channels for players and DMs alike looking for games. I'd recommend finding a server that is based around your region as that can help a lot with time-zone issues.
I haven't used the site before but I've heard good things from StartPlaying, the games there are typically pay to play, however they seem quite reliable.
Hope any of this helps in your journey!
Oh that’s perfect thanks for the information. I really appreciate the willingness to help out.
No worries! I hope you find a game that suits :)
@lyric fjord I can't say for sure yet. But I know in a few months I'll have an open slot for a group.
I'm trying to get into DnD so I'm pretty new, but I'm unable to figure out how to calulate my Damage/Type for a spell/cantrip. Any advice?
the type of damage is defined by the spell
if it does damage itll tell you what dice to roll to get the damage
I'm trying to do a basic bard with Dancing Lights and Vicious mockery
well dancing lights doesnt do any damage
vicious mockery as it says in the spell description does 1d4 psychic damage
also those are just your cantrips you get to pick 4 levelled spells as well
ah ok, I couldnt find the spell descriptions for them in the book so I mustve missed them, Thanks
thanks
If I wanted to start playing DnD with no experience, is it better to do a bunch of research, or jump into a newbies game to learn the basics. Or do both?
start by doing a bit of research and read the basic rules, then jump into a game
👍 thanks, again
Id run for yall but not sure if ill have time this week
I'm brand new.. is anyone in need of a new player for an upcoming session this week? Wanting to learn how to play 🙂

Oh.. I love you
What do I put for “passive wisdom (Perception)” my perception? Or the modifier or what
The total when you add 10 to your perception bonus
10 + Wisdom + (if you have proficiency in the perception skill, your proficiency modifier)
So this will be 10 + proficiency bonus + wisdom modifier if you're proficient in perception, or just 10 + wisdom modifier if you're not proficient
Here's how to determine a character's total for a passive check:
10 + all modifiers that normally apply to the check
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#PassiveChecks
If you'd normally add +5 to a perception check, then you'd put 10 + 5 = 15.
When making a character using this handbook, there's not much choice for adventurers gear.....I thought that Tasha's cauldron and xananthers book added more things
It added a ton. Do you own that book so you can use the content it has?
Oh wait. Gear? Not much there. Lots of magic items tho.
What gear are you looking for that you're not finding
When you’re casting spells during a game are you constantly having to look up the spells to be reminded on what they do and what level the spells get an upgrade?
Yes, it is normal to have to refer to the rules. Very few people memorise all their class features, especially spells
Oh I was just curious (it's my partner that's into dnd, I got her a few gifts but I'm trying to work out how to make a character etc) theres only 1 page table of items Im guessing I can pick from for my starting out (something about if it fits the background of my character it's free, otherwise I pay with my starting gold
I just thought they'd be far more choices lol
You're referring to this section, right?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#AdventuringGear
Yes that's the one
It's quite a long list of items, many of which aren't even single items but sets of tools
And it's also only meant to cover the kind of gear an adventurer might typically start out with and provide ideas, that's not the totality of what you can find or use in the game
Oh ok that's where I think my naivety was...I assumed those were the only items in this game lol
50g doesn't seem like I can get much haha
Nope
So things like a bedroll, blanket, backpack, rations, water skin etc would be very useful at the beginning
In general, yes
I like getting spell cards for when I don't know a class. So when I pick those spells I have then ready in front of me.
Yup. Tho it's always good to work with your DM in any circumstance. I know many DMs that just handwave rations/sleeping/etc and assume it's being done in the background.
Conversely, other DMs will absolutely play in to the survival aspects and require it as part of the core of their game.
Sleep is my favorite time to poke the PCs lol
Oh I see so add them in pencil but it could change.
Yes, your gear can and will change over the course of a campaign
Maybe you lose a piton trying to wedge a trapdoor closed, or your mirror gets broken using it to look around a corner because you think there's an ambush
Ah I see, that makes sense.
Another random, my druid focus (there's a few choices) if I pick wooden staff, is this classed as a weapon ? As I had picked a quarterstaff so I'm thinking 2 staffs might be weird lol
A druid can use their weapon staff as a focus. Similar to how some artificers use their armor as a focus.
Its the other way around, actually. You can't pick up a random quarterstaff and treat it as a spellcasting focus, but if you you have a staff focus you can make attacks with it as if it was a quarterstaff
I read that they had a wooden staff as a focus.
👍
So, in the DMG, under the rules for magic items, they describe the different types of magic items, and under the section for staffs, it says
"Unless a staff’s description says otherwise, a staff can be used as a quarterstaff."
A normal staff that you use as your spellcasting focus is not a magic item, but this quote does not specify if its referring specifically to magic staffs or if it includes mundane ones as well. So, its unclear whether or not a normal staff should be able to be treated as a quarterstaff. That's an important question to ask your DM.
We also have the rules for improvised weapons, which allows you to add your proficiency bonus to attacks with improvised weapons if that improvised weapon resembles a weapon you are proficient in:
"Often, an improvised weapon is similar to an actual weapon and can be treated as such. For example, a table leg is akin to a club. At the DM's option, a character proficient with a weapon can use a similar object as if it were that weapon and use his or her proficiency bonus."
So, even if your DM does not allow normal spellcasting focus staffs to be treated as quarterstaff, there is still this option to make an attack with that spellcasting focus. This is also up to the DM, so ask them about this as well, but this rule seems a little more clearly in your favor. If the spellcasting focus staff is being treated as an improvised weapon, it will only deal 1d4 damage on hit, instead of the quarterstaff's normal 1d6 / 1d8, but you will still get to add your proficiency bonus, which is where the larger chunk of the damage comes from anyways
Ah ok so the druid focus wooden staff could be used as a attacking weapon staff, so I could instead of picking a quarterstaff as a simple melee weapon \ or shield I can pick something else
That depends on your DM's interpretation on the rules I laid out above.
Hello i am buying a d&d starter set but i only have me and my friend so my friend is the dm so do i need to create 2 chars or what do you guys recommend?
Adding a second character is a possibility, sure.
If it's the starter set with Dragon of Icespire Peak, that also comes with rules for sidekicks you could use.
It’s probably something to chat with your DM about. They may use the existing sidekick rules, they may ask you to make and control multiple characters, or something else entirely.
Hello.Hum, I would really love to start playing Dnd, but I don't really know where to begin. Should I read all the rule books or just jump right in a game and learn on the spot?
The best place to start is to either read the basic rules, or watch some D&D games on Youtube or Twitch. You can find a link to the basic rules in the bot post below this 👇
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
You certainly don't need to read all the rules to play D&D. Start with the character creation section and work out from there on any topic you find intriguing!
I guess the Players Handbook is enough. Maybe watch some Youtube Tutorials on how to make your first character. Just so you get a understanding of how Stats and Skills interact with eachother. The rest is practice
no its the Dragons of Stormwreck Isle starter set its the onlu one my local game store has and i heard that its really good
what's the "standard" for these options here? say i just want to make a character to play with in the future
Options are:
- Homebrew content
- Critical Role Content
- Eberron Content
- Noncore Content
- Dragonlance Content
hey im brand new to dnd got some official dnd flaschards and actually made my first character i think im not sure haha was wondering how to actually play😅
and can characters made like this, on my own, be added to future campaigns if i enabled some of these settings beforehand that are not allowed in their campaign? and if so, could i revert that change so that my character could be accepted into the campaign? or the opposite; like i make an elf, join a campaign, they allow extra races, so can i change my race at that point to one of the unlockable ones?
Hello all I'm new to dnd and am looking forward to learning and playing
Have you read the (free) Basic Rules yet?
Ultimately, that's a question you should ask your DM. If you don't have a DM yet, I would just leave that whole page at the default values.
default values includ mtg lol...
can i change anything about my character later? maybe that's a better question
if i leave everything off, i should be able to join any normal campaign right?
so since i am gonna buy the Dragons of Stormwreck Isle starter set what should i do then?
@upbeat socket There are no standards, you need your DM to establish what content they're allowing
Anything you select can be changed at a later time, yes.
If you don't have a group yet, then at this stage, I'd suggest just coming up with a few loose ideas for characters.
Then you can work with your DM to find the best fit for that campaign and finalize any remaining details.
The book itself says this:
You can run Dragons of Stormwreck Isle for one to five players. [...] If you have fewer than four players, you can have some players take on the role of two characters so the group has at least four characters. A player with two characters should treat one of them as their main character and the other as a sidekick, there to help out but probably not engaging in a lot of dialogue.
tysm
so i should take on 4 charactors bc its just me and the DM?
i can just make 2 charactors and see where it takes me😅
Hey could somebody help me figure out how to roll for stats
There's three official methods for determining your ability scores. Which you should use is a question to ask your DM.
But for rolls specifically, you roll 4d6 and add the highest three.
Thank you
Repeat that until you've got six totals, then assign those numbers to your ability scores as you see fit.
Thank you
That and the other ability score methods are all described here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#3DetermineAbilityScores
Best way to get into D&D? As a player or as a DM?
You can certainly do either, but starting as a player is WAY easier, and generally recommended. The DM is in charge of making rules decisions, as well as balancing the game and creating the world you play in. That can be a lot to do for a beginner, but if you are up for that challenge, its certainly possible
I wouldn't say that starting as a DM isn't recommended at all, though it is the harder option. You totally can start out as a DM, but if you do, you probably want to run a prewritten campaign, particularly one of those written for new DMs.
Sizeable advantage of being a DM is that you will always have a game. Players can struggle to find DMs.
Hey I've spectated a few D&D games and decided I want to play as well, hearing a lot of stories about it and watching people have fun whilst playing.
I just want to know if someone can point me in the right direction to an explanation how everything works, from dice to various abilities different classes and races have
theres a bunch of videos online for this stuff

Could someone explain where the +5 attack modifier came from for the "claw" attack? Thanks in advance
Presumably dexterity modifier + proficiency bonus, but monsters don't necessarily follow the same rules as players.
That's what I thought, however because it's a melee attack I thought it had to use strength modifier?
Again, monsters don't necessarily follow the same rules as players.
Not all melee attacks use strength modifier (such as finesse weapons).
The +5 could be a number they just completely made up to meet the criteria they wanted.
There's guidelines in the DMG for determining a monster's attack bonus.

hello I'm new to dnd stuff
Welcome to D&D!
@lyric fjord Here's a list of the basics!
Hi, i'm Milo, from Italy, i don't know why i'm here (i was searching online a group of players to play D&D online in Italian), I found an invitation in a site on google. I'm new in this world but I would like to play with someone, I've never played a D&D but I've always been fascinated by it, could you advise me on what to do or point me to some groups? I installed discord today.
I submitted one this morning but have not received a response, yet.
Hi Luzooka, i'm looking at chat messages but I only notice the txts of "Dyno"
Those messages from Dyno contain instructions on how to find a group here on the server.
Thank you Spamandtuna
Hello I’m KB and I’ve never played DND officially, I’ve always been interested and I used to create my own ttrpg systems to play with friends but now I actually want to play the real thing!

when a character drops to 0, then I heal them on my turn, will the character be able to play normally on the next turn?
They will be prone but otherwise yes
0 means unconscious, making death throws. Until 3 failures they are not dead and any healing will get them up
All I’ve done is made a character hi everyone 👋
If damage reduces you to 0 hit points and fails to kill you, you fall unconscious. This unconsciousness ends if you regain any hit points.

Welcome! What did you make?
Okay so I have a bit of an interesting (and terrifying situation). I've literally never played DnD before, and I've watched very little content of it as well, but I REALLY want to get into it. I have a group of friends that I wanna play with, but only our one friend has like, a tiny bit of experience. Because I'm the one wanting to bring everyone into this, I've taken it upon myself to be the DM. This issue with this is that I have no clue how to play. I don't have any sort of time constraint on how to learn how to play and it's already expected to be ABSOLUTE CHAOS on the first few gos, but aside from the Player's handbook is there any books or videos I should be checking out for advice on how things work and how to make this the best experience possible?
TLDR; I have literally no experience with DnD and want to be a DM for my friends, looking for resources to teach myself (I'm in no rush though)
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
If everyone’s aware that you’re all learning together, I wouldn’t stress it too much.
Mistakes can and will happen no matter how long you’ve been playing.
As long as everyon’e having fun, you’re doing it right.
Thank you so much for the advice and resources, really appreciate it

I am like extremely new to DND and have no idea about anything about it (I know it sounds bad😭) but I really want to get into it and I love the idea of playing and making stories:D
Can anyone help me?
have a look at the bot post a few messages up, it contains some links to help get you started
specifically have a look at the basic rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation) and if you need more help theres the handbook helper videos linked in the bot post or you can ask here
So should I look at this?
I'll take a look at it but if anyone wants to help feel extremely free to help because I'm hopeless on my own
I am so lost I think I'm gonna need like a guide or something bahhah._.
Hi there! I am a brazilian guy who has been a master in quite some other rpgs systems (most of the time I would create my own), yet I have never actually played d&d, so I thought it would be a good idea to finally try it out
The idea is for you to read the linked materials first. Dnd is a game with rules, there’s no way around reading the materials. It doesnt have to be all at once, nor quickly. Take your time. After, if you have questions, ask here
I know dw I have read them it's just that I have a bit of a mental block when it comes to this lmao:)
yeah it seems quite overwhelming, I don't know anything about this but I think the key is just being patient and learning little by little
Yeah I'll have some issues but I'll try🙃
if you learn better with videos the handbook helper videos linked in the same bot post could help

It's already accounted for in the stats iirc but yes
If your DM has asked for initative, then …what’s the problem? Unless there is a narrative reason for sparing the enemy
Murder hobo would be trying to kill out of combat or forcing combat
Talk to your party? Are they new or something
Ello!
oi
Same brother, i got hooked recently, looking for a starter character campaign to help me learn the ropes
thats relateable
?looking
Oh come on bot...
Please read #find-a-game to learn more on how to find a game
yeah, already found the channels, thank you.
Hello
Hello!
I think that would be find a game
im assuming you dont just make a character way in advance, you make it before the campaign starts so you cna work and adapt with the DM to make your character work?
Yep exactly!
Does speed change as you level up?
Nope
There’s some abilities, feats and spells that can change it but in general it doesn’t
How do you get your hit point maximum for the character sheet
The character creation rules step you through that
What class are you using? Warlock?
Warlock yes
Each class has a specific hit dice
At first level your hp maximum is the highest roll of the hit dice (aka the number of sides) plus your con mod
At the top of their class features, it shows how to calculate your hit points for first level and each level after.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/warlock#ClassFeatures
So as a warlock with 14 con you have 10 max hp at first level
I’ve been watching this as a new comer and it is probably one of the most helpful things I found
Yes! That video is awesome.
12/10 Fr
I know the hit dice I don’t know how it connects to the hit point maximum is it 1d8 per level + con modifier?
Yeah except at first level it would be 8+con mod
And every level after that you gain 1d8+con mod
So level 5 hit point maximum would be 40 + con mod?
Okay sorry for jumping channels but I believe this belongs here
How the hell does wild surge work I am reading the player's handbook and
Wild surge and tides of chaos contradict eachother
When you cast a spell 1 level of higher the DM can make you roll on the table
But then if says if you use your tides of chaos anytime before you regain the use of this feature and cast a spell 1st level or higher the DM can make you roll on the table
So as I'm reading it if I never use my tides of chaos ability I never have to worry about my wild magic acting up?
No
Buddy.
You still may surge if the dm chooses it when you cast a spell normally
You have asked in every channel and it has been explained multiple times
It is way too confusing
Maybe play a different class then
You literally copied the text here
So I can’t put a hit point maximum before the game starts?
You do, for the level you’re at
You’re misinterpreting “hitpoint maximum” with “theoretical max i can ever get”
Yes I am
If it been explained why am I still confused I guess the explanation made me even more confused or it was a bad explanation
Or the class is too complicated for you atm
If you don’t want Wild Magic surges to happen very often, I encourage you to pick a subclass that has features that you like!
No they want it to happen as far as I can tell
Its because you want wild magic to work the way YOU want, instead of how it actually works, and your preconceived notion of it is blocking u from accepting how it works
Also, this was already asked in multiple channels
If you’re having an issue with it, I suggest putting the phone down, doing something else to re-set and picking it up again after a good sleep
There’s nothing left for anyone here to currently. Take a break
It the best sorcerer subclass
And sorcerer is the only class that fits my Yan-ti character
I don't want my Yan-ti to be connected to dragon
I just wanted to enjoy the class and feel the wild magic but the PHB confuses me alot for every class I play
The only one that doesn't is ranger
You cant say it’s the best sorcerer class when you know how it works, and from what you just said, it sounds like you havent picked up any classes yet, so at this point you’re just in your own feelings
You are completely fixated on whatever you think your concept is and its blocking you from thinking clearl
I've played Ranger, Rogue, fighter, Sorcerer that it
So again: take a break, reset your brain, pick it up tomorrow
I have to figure this out before next Sunday when we continue the campaign so I can talk to my DM
There’s nothing for you to gain today. And it sounds like you should talk to your DM regardless
We are in the middle of the keys of the golden vault
You are clogging this channel with off topic discussion
Please re-read the dozen or whatever responses you got in the other channels after you’ve cleared your mind
this channel is for newcomer questions
I've tried taken break playing assassin's Creed and coming back this problem has been with me for 3 days now
@bitter swift I don't think you are getting what option zero is saying
I also have a problem I can't overcome which screw me up called fixation I won't be able to sleep unless I solve what on my mind
I am a over fixator
@bitter swift I recommend the DND subreddit. Rather than a discord chat intended for something else
I've read the PHB 5 times
You are turning the channel into your personal vent space which is not its function
Please follow the rules
@bitter swift the only correct response at this point is an apology and to end the conversation
If you want an explanation, you can head to #dnd-rules and I'll give a quick rundown on how WM Sorc works (and doesn't.)
Apology for what not understanding how something work or people explations on something I hate my freaking disability
I wish I could understand I sorry if I've been a nusanice I'll leave and wrack my brain over the PHB until I go crazy I feel like sometimes stuff need to explain to me in very basic lamen ways and PHB is way too confusing at times
you are not a nuisance, but please try and digest the information people have already give you regarding wild magic
I have and it still confusing
What aspects are confusing specifically?
I just picked the class after reading the table looked like fun
The table can be fun
@bitter swift please don't use disabilities as a passive aggressive weapon. There are better ways to cope than this.
I'm not trying to just stating that I have trouble learning and wording stuff thank to my dumb disability
I like YouTube videos for learning new class features. I can watch and rewatch them as many times as I need to.
The steps are essentially:
- When a wild magic sorcerer casts a spell level 1 or higher (so NOT cantrips) - this creates the potential for a wild magic event. "Wild Magic Surge"
- Therefore - the DM asks you to roll a d20.
- if you roll a 2-20 nothing extra happens with your spell
- if you roll a 1 Wild Magic Occurs
- Then you roll a d100 which has numbers that correlate to a wild magic effect you see in that chart.
The other way a Wild Magic surge can happen is if you choose to use the feature "Tides of Chaos"
that means you skip ste[ 2 and go immediately to step 3.
basically you can think of Wild Magic surge like this... you cast a spell and the magic power builds up like a power plant that is overloaded. If you roll a 2-20 the power plant evades an explosion and goes about their day. if you roll a 1, they cannot cool the reactor in time and there is an explosion of random magic.
Folks, stop
He’s posted in multiple channels and has been repeating the same thing for about five hours
And i kinda dont appreciate “a disability” being thrown around as an excuse to ignore people and what theyre trying to do
I looked over your prior posts
The issue is not a lack of understanding- you even posted the rule CORRECTLY
The issue is you want wild magic to work the way YOU want
And you’ve spend hours in multipe channels demanding everyone listen to you talk about it
And you’ve been told multiple times and THIS isnt channel for it
So at this time it isnt about you trying to get help understanding a feature
This is actually starting to make sense kinda but what is the negative to tides of chaos it just seem to repeat the exact same thing and made it sound like to me it only happen after you use it
You are throwing a tantrum in a channel to get attention
Thats literally the rule, as you yourself have pointed out
Just because you dont like it, doesnt change how it works
Cool it, folks.
This isn't the first time he has done this.
Everyone here is expected to treat others with respect.
I think it is time for a walk around the block my friend.
I did, i even made dinner. I came back and its still going on exactly as it was before
As i said i checked the posting history, its been at least five hours
in multiple channels
If you have a problem with someone, you can report it to the moderator team or simply block them and move on. Everyone is still expected to treat others with respect either way.
I did, check #moderator-support
You can review the posting history, here i tried ten ways to be polite about it
Tides of Chaos has a whole first part of the feature that has nothing to do with wild magic and is very helpful to a character "..gain advantage on one attack roll, ability check, or saving throw." and by a DM choosing to make Wild Magic happen, that allows you to use Tides of Chaos again before a long rest. Otherwise, Tides is once per long rest.
This is the way I learn stuff I fixate like mad until it drilled the way calamity put it is starting to make me understand
So there no negative
I thought everything has a negative
It is the style of fixation that people have issues with.
To be fair,a person shouldn't go to every channel and spam the same question.. but if they are trying to gain understanding legitmately, finding a more appropriate channel isn't a bad idea.
And people can choose to respond or not respond.
I was trying to find the channel idk which to use
Wild magic doesn't always do good things for the caster or their party.. that is the potential negative.
I want to use it the way it is written I don't want to homebrew Just to play something
Wild magic, if i may be a bit on the nose, is a roll of the dice. It can either go good for you or be a hinderance
If you're ever curious about how a specific rule (for example a subclass) works, feel free to head to #dnd-rules, as it's likely going to get you the best answer.
(Not saying you can't get answers elsewhere.)
Does dragonchess count as a tool proficiency you can have for the custom background?
there has been a fair bit of channel hoppin for this already.. maybe we can just resolve it here.
but in future, yeah, that is totally good advice. 🙂
Sure but it seems like a waste considering how rare it would be used.
I believe it does count as a proficiency
Character and rp purposes perhaps
You do you. (Still a waste IMO)
Play a chess master, why not!?
What tools are better my character doesnt come equipped with any
Depends what your character wants to do.
what kind of character are you making?
Ye, I agree. It's just that #dnd-rules is specifically the place where you can ask clarification and people will explain it 500 different ways and it's all topical.
Warlock
Some tools let you make useful things.
Id say think about what your character would be good at, there's so many different tools that you would need to narrow it down based on what fits backstory/character wise
An herbalism kit will allow you to make healing potions, for example
So let me get this straight so I can be done
Wild magic can happen no matter if I use tides of chaos or not
And it only if the DM want it to happen in the game if he doesn't then my spell works
Does it still use up a spell slot if my wild magic trigger and does the wild magic happens with the spell or replace it
Your spell works regardless of whether the DM asks for a wild magic surge roll.
Wild Magic is like an additional effect.
Wild magic surge is an additional effect that happens at the same time.
Doesn't do anything to the spell you cast.
So if I shoot Magic missile the spell still activates?
Yes
Which tools let you make potions
And it still does the damage + the wild magic
Alchemist
Alchemist’s Supplies
Yes
Yup, Wild Magic is like fries to a burger.
Welp I've been playing all wrong then
Your fries don't change your burger.
My DM hasn't stopped me
They may not have known.
I been trying to use my spell and shooting magic missiles and if I rolled wrong my spell failed waisting a spell slot and my wild magic took over
To recap, Wild Magic is the idea that you order a burger, and sometimes the staff at the restaurant give you fries on the side.
Damnit... Now I want a burger
And sometimes those fries blow up your entire party
Yes, they can taste awful.
My party has been hating my character for my wild magic
- You cast a spell. The spell does what the spell is meant to do.
- The DM can additionally ask you to roll for a Wild Magic Surge.
- If they do and you’ve already used Tides of Chaos, you can now use it again.
Well, you had "salad" with your burger, so it makes sense.
Which is why you cover them in cheese curds and gravy
Those two things don't really make sense in the same meal unless you do some work. (Salad and burgers.)
Okay I finally kinda understand thank you guy the PHB was confusing to me and I just wanted to understand sometimes in need to be explained like I'm 5 XD
Sorry for everything
Funny enough the burger thing helped
5% chance of supernatural mystery fries.
I find that making things completely unrelated to DnD sometimes makes for the best explanations. (And I just like food.)
100% chance of burger.
Another thing I need is rogue I gave up on that class since the whole sneak attack thing confused me I never knew when to use it
The most easiest class for me was Ranger it was simple and straightforward and I even screwed up on it
Sneak Attack is like a coupon for a free milkshake. You use it whenever you can because as a Rogue, you only get small meals at the burger place.
You have a card that says whenever you go get food from there, you get a free milkshake and in this situation, Rogues really love their milkshakes.
But when do I get to use it I mean how do I sneak attack someone when in combat
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes#SneakAttack
Beginning at 1st level, you know how to strike subtly and exploit a foe’s distraction. Once per turn, you can deal an extra 1d6 damage to one creature you hit with an attack if you have advantage on the attack roll. The attack must use a finesse or a ranged weapon.
You don’t need advantage on the attack roll if another enemy of the target is within 5 feet of it, that enemy isn’t incapacitated, and you don’t have disadvantage on the attack roll.
The amount of the extra damage increases as you gain levels in this class, as shown in the Sneak Attack column of the Rogue table.
I was told I had to be in stealth or sneak up on the person
- You either need to have advantage or have an ally is next to the enemy.
- You need to be attack with a finesse or ranged weapon.
But it said you don't need advantage and if I am level 6 I get all 3 at once
You need to meet those two criteria to get Sneak Attack.
Depends on how the dm likes to play it, I’ve played it where you either need to be hidden or roll a stealth so they don’t see you, and then you get advantage on ur attack and as long as you beat the AC you get the sneak attack bonus
Oh I see
Your DM may definitely be running stuff differently, which is tough for us to account for.
How you get the advantage is irrelevant.
Yeah if it makes more sense that way tho, he could discuss doing that with his dm instead
Talk with your DM.
I don't have that DM anymore
Next time you play then
It was months ago
Talk with your DM when you have one.
My current DM said my wild magic table is Makin him learn stuff
Talk to your DM about your wild magic then.
Isn't wild magic just rolling a d20 when you cast a sorcerer spell and you get a cool surge if you get a nat 1?
Yeah basically (player perspective here) the easiest way to find out how to play your character is to talk with your dm
Yes, we've been through this for the past few hours (scroll up).
Just last session he had to learn what a modron was
That's cool.
Many times they’ll compromise to make the character as easy to play as possible (as in mechanic wise or the player not the game)
Because I made one appear
You should post this in #tales-from-the-table
Perhaps let the new players ask questions here since it seems you're more experienced than your DM.
Anyway thanks for everyone able to handle me I think I've finally figured out the class
Sorry for everything
If this question is asked quite often I apologize in advance. I have a fairly decent understanding of the relationship between a Paladin/Deity and the Cleric/Deity; however when it comes to Warlock/Patron it just does not make sense in my mind.
-
When selecting between 1 of 3 types of your patrons - how much does the specific patron actually affect your story rather than a type of patron?
-
When playing a Paladin if you go against your respective deity the DM has the potential to remove your blessing; is there an equivalent for a Warlock?
-
Is it even possible to Multi-Class Warlock/Paladin?
- Are there negative side effects depending on which patron type you select and where can i search to find those?
I thought you have to select a deity to devote yourself to as a Paladin
So you can play essentially an entire campaign without ever declaring a devotion to a specific God of order? I am aware of the Oaths but i thought as part of lore you essential declare a God to devote your self too. If I am wrong then wow i am stupid
The oaths have no connection to gods
A Paladin can worship a god
But that isn’t connected to their power
So for the warlock stuff, 1. The impact it has is dependent on both whether your patron is for example a prince of hell or a minor fiend, and also is dependent on your dm
Oath of the Crown paladins swear allegiance to their nation/state rather than to a deity.
- There isn’t a published option, but given that paladins devote themselves to an oath that they can end whenever they want however warlocks basically sign a contract, they have to keep their word and obey their side otherwise I think their patron would punish them
Did not know this was an option. Thank you!
- RAW it is, and I don’t see any reason a dm wouldnt allow it. Warlock/Cleric however I’m not sure would work, but statistically it doesn’t work well either so it shouldn’t matter
Oath of devotion paladins swear to basically being good, oath of the ancients swear to protecting beauty, etc
- There are no negative side effects RAW, however some dms may work in what the patron gets from their side of the pact
@fleet field Thank you for the breakdown. Makes way more sense this way!
All good!
Clerics have dieties that serve
They gain power through their service, worship, or connection to that diety
Paladins have power through conviction. They believe in something - and that does not need to be a god, it can be an ideal or set of ideals
The oaths each come with tenants that describe the believes for the subclass, but those are mere starting points. You flavor them how you want
Oath of Redemption for example believes in the inherent good in all people, that can be brought back from any brink. Its literally forgiveness that give them power
Makes sense, I definitely did not play the class to its utmost potential.
The confusion comes from the basic description that mentions Devine and gods several times, but as long as you believe in something and have strong convictions anything can work
Thank you everyone. The clarification has helped me tremendously!
Can I rent copies of the player handbook at my local library

There’s some links in the bot post above you should look at
Ah okay will take a look, thank you!
Start by reading the basic rules, you only need to read the first four chapters on character creation to start with
@sacred pike there’s some videos as well linked in the bot post
Have a look at them
Kinda hard for me
What part of it?
Same
Severe
It’s a pain
I was ranked in the top 10 highest in my state when I tested
So much so they thought I was autistic lol
Take your time watch lots of videos
I CANT
Yeah idk about you but I find videos easier to stay focused on
Without human interaction I don't pay attention
You may be able to find beginner dnd groups able to teach you in your area
Then you are going to have to find a Lgs to learn in person
No I'm fine with stuff like this
Just need response
Plus I kinda got a big dnd group alr, and our dm is leaving so I need to learn allot on the game
If you already have a group and you learn better through direct interaction, why not ask your old DM to teach you?
So you know how to play dnd if your in a group?
He gone
And I do know basics for players not dm
Ok this is kinda hard to explain cuz I don't know what I can say legally
U gonna talk or just type, that sounded rude I didn't mean it like that
If you can tell a story and know the basic rules you can DM keep it simple to start with, extra stuff will come with time and experience even veteran DMs make mistakes so as long as your players are have fun you’re doing fine
Ok I think u got this
Good luck with it. It's not that hard, there's just a lot to keep track of.
How would you guys handle an early game dragon encounter
(As in making a fight the party could win at around level 4)
have them fight a wyrmling
@foggy fable This is more of a #dm-discussion question rather than a beginners question
I am a beginner sorry
Yes, but the question isn't a beginners question really
It's much more suited to the DM discussion channel
There are rules for balancing encounters in the basic rules
This channel is more for folks just getting started playing and while we can handle basic questions like "how do saving throws work?" when you start getting into how to balance an encounter, that's much more a DM question and asking in #dm-discussion is a good place to get help with those kinds of questions.
is there a good app I can use to design my first character that contains all the options? seems like D&D Beyond requires me to buy books to unlock races
Anything not in the SRD/free basic rules has to be purchased regardless if you use DnDBeyond, Roll20, Fantasy Grounds, etc.
Happy to purchase once I make my choice, was more asking for an exhaustive list or character builder so I can make my choice prior to buying a library haha
Now you don't necessarily have to purchase it - a DnDBeyond campaign could have content sharing enabled if someone in that campaign has a Master Tier subscription. Additionally DnDBeyond allows you to buy individual classes/races/spells/items.
Again anything not in the SRD/free basic rules is not free.
Hi guys I’m new to the d&d community and I came here to see if I could get advice on character creation game rules and what I need and maybe even play my first game here. Anyways I also wanted to just say hi
Welcome! W have lots of useful resources posted in the pinned messages. I'd start there and if you have any specific questions, feel free to ask here (or in an appropriate channel).
Ok thanks:)
so i need the app to get started with hero creation ?
No - you can start with the free basic rules and a printed character sheet that you fill in with pen/pencil.
DnDBeyond though does make it failry easy to do with their digital character creation tool.
so im using dndbeyond.com/characters/xxx/builder/race/choose, wanting to be a class that will be most helpful in combat, like a tank with passive healing over time or healing when doing damage, while also able to buff my team mates to deal more dps while tanking. im pure new to everything so im kinda blind as to waht i can and cant do , jsuta want a roll that will mid max my helpfulness
all advice is welcomed
I'd suggest checking with the folks in #character-discussion but paladin would be a good "tank and heals" class.
yea thats waht i was thinking also thats why i went with the pally
Hey yo
welcome!
So in dnd you can do anything right??
Depends - the DM sets the scene, asks what your character wants to do, and then decides what rules are in effect and if any dice rolls are needed.
That depends on your DM! There are rules, after all
Ooh i see…
It's a collaborative story telling RPG game so don't expect "I'd like to summon an ancient dragon" to just happen because you said so.
DnD sounds really cool!
How does one make a character though?
Is it true that you can use character sheets?

can i get a link for the demo please

oh f didnt notice it was right there in the first link XDty
can someone explain me simply how rituals work ?
because the casting time is 10 minutes long so i guess it has no use in combat
but then, do you need to plan 10 minutes in your day if you want to cast one ?
Think of it like this: you could cast Detect Magic in 6 seconds, but it costs a spell slot. Useful when you need it quick!
Or (since Detect Magic has the Ritual tag) you can cast it as a ritual in 10 minutes for free! Very good for low-stakes encounters or when you're not rushed for time.
so variant human, pally, wis/dex +1
str 13
dex 12
con 15
int 10
wis 14
char 8
so far so good?
Paladins actually use charisma as one of their main stats, so it might be a little work... That's a topic for #optimization though! I'd check in with that channel.
Which stats got the +1?
CHA should generally be one of the highest for a paladin, though.
dex/wis (not added to the base stats listed)
so would swaping int (10) with char (8)?
better swapping wis with cha
im building for combat not story as its my first hero
The quick build guide for paladins suggests this:
First, Strength should be your highest ability score, followed by Charisma.
survivability is my main goal for my party
Not that you have to follow the guide, but it’s generally good advice.
Charisma is your spellcasting modifier.
oh
If you tank charisma, you’re hindering your ability to cast spells.
It also affects your aura of protection at level 7, which gives you allies a massive buff!
though, people in #optimization will be more than happy to answer all your questions
im using the demo it says char is for measuring force of personality?
Sure, generally.
But for paladins specifically, it’s also heavily used for your class features.
hi im new to dnd i have a question again (sorry)
so i want to like multiclass to barbarian and choose the path of the zealot it says that "At 3rd level, your soul is marked for endless battle. " what does that mean? xd
That's flavor. How it translates mechanically can be read further on down the page.
That's just flavor text
ah ic ic thx
As for this, use the +1s to turn your odd scores even.
That will increase your modifiers for those abilities.
(Turning an even number odd does not.)
so variant human, pally, str/char +1 (+1 included in stats listed)
str 15
dex 12
con 13
int 8
wis 10
char 16
this is what iv done now, any better?
Looking much better! I like it
f
so if i change my +1's from str/char to cons/char id be at
str 14
dex 12
con 14
int 8
wis 10
char 16
making all my stats even ? would be better?
You probably should ask over in #character-discussion
ty
Hi guys newbie here my bro is making a dragonborn rogue and his stats are sus high (i was with him when he rolled the dice)
How high is “sus high”?
Sometimes the dice curse you, sometimes they bless you
(This is why I have my players use point buy.
)
Str 15 dex 16 const 17 int 16 wis 13 char 13
Those are certainly good stats!
Are they plausible stats?
I mean any stats are are plausible. And you said you watched him roll
They're high but I don't think they're game-breakingly high, imo.
It's advisable to use standard array or point buy particularly if you are new. Big stats might seem fun, but in reality it can be kinda boring to be good at everything, and marginalise characters who invested in class abilities that do the same
If you saw them rolled and you trust his dice, then yes. That's the cost of rolling. Sometimes it's incredibly good. Sometimes it's incredibly bad.
Did you do the standard method of 4d6 drop lowest?
Whats point buy?
It's a system where you start with a pool of points, and then you spend them on your starting stats. It's a little bit like how the fallout games do it.
page 13 of the PHB
Oh bruh its lowest not highest
Dont have that
Wait. He dropped the highest and still got those scores??
Anyways i found out thanks
Or see the bottom of this free page: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#3DetermineAbilityScores
That has the point buy rules
Oh and then theres all this other empty stuff on his sheet i gotta figure out
Like saving throws and skills and all the rest of it
It's a nice system because it means everyone has overall the same balance, but you can still customise
I think i shouldnt be DM i am quite so dumb.
Every DM makes mistakes, no matter how long they’ve been playing.
You're not gunna know until you give it a shot.
It’s fine, especially if the group knows you’re all learning together.
As long as everyone’s having fun, you’ve done it right.
My group is my grandma bro and I bruh
I've been playing this game for a while and I still mess rules up - but everyone's having fun and that's the reason we play this game.
Thanks guys!
Legit your grandma is probably super excited to be doing something with you.
New to dnd and want to play a half orc half tiefling Avernus paladin, lawful evil, does anyone have any good links to relevant info or maybe similar builds?

if i go with brew supplies can i make pots for my party?
what perks do i obtain with the skill prof?
Not really perks but you could craft things by using the tools
The full extent if it will likely depend on your DM, so they're the best person to ask.
so like more arrows for archers?
With higher successful roll
Xanathar's Guide to Everything had some expanded rules for tool proficiencies, though.

not interested in buy anything irl (already spend hundreds on mtg with no friends to play with in person now that im grown)
Anyone hosting a online campaign i can join?
At its simplest, a tool proficiency allows you to add your proficiency bonus to any ability checks made using that tool.
Anyone can use theive's tools to try and pick a lock, but if you have proficiency with those tools, adding your proficiency bonus to the roll makes you more likely to succeed.
so reading all that i dont think id actually need any of them lol?
They fill the same niche as skills.
The value of any given proficiency may vary.
Animal Handling isn't that useful if you don't interact with animals.
Arcana isn't as useful in a low-magic setting.
Dragonchess proficiency isn't much help if you don't find a reason to play dragonchess.
background feature is pretty limited i feel
its asking me for dice set , dragonchess set in tools pro? what do theses mean
You'd add your proficiency bonus to checks made to use the dice set.
See #looking-for-players.
Maybe you need information from someone in a bar, so you make a bet and challenge them to a game of luck.
Since you can add your proficiency bonus to the roll, it helps your chances.
so if i picked playing cards set if a tavern had a gambling ring id be set?
oh right right
Your proficiency bonus will give you a 10-30% boost, depending on your character level.
dicing seems like a good gamble vs cards
What should I use my D4 with?
The most common die you'll use is the d20.
Ik
You don't choose when to use a certain dice, instead you use it when the game calls for it
But the rules will tell you what to roll and when.
Man I just had to fight a CR20 minotaur
Thx
Any DM tips before first ever session?
?dmtips
If you want more beyond those above, I have my own list of generic DM tips: #dnd-newcomers message
difference between priests pack and a adventures pack?
A priest's pack has these contents: https://www.dndbeyond.com/equipment/priests-pack
An explorer's pack (I think that's what you meant?) has these contents: https://www.dndbeyond.com/equipment/explorers-pack
ty
also diffrences between holy symbols:
amulet
emblem
reliquary
holy symbol
(im a variant human pally, tank that buffs self and party (healing/passive buffing)
There's no mechanical differences, it's all flavor.
Whats a pally
i was assuming one needed to be held in hands while other can be on body like the amulet
Paladin?
paladin
Paladin!
maybe ill make a paladin if I am not cursed to be the forever dm
To some a curse, to others a blessing!
keen to see waht you come up with (new never played making my first hero atm)
with starting eq am i req to add items and other possessions or i can just roll with the multi choice options listed above this option?
You get starting equipment (which you have some limited choices with) from your class and your background (which you choose from a list). You can also roll for starting gold and buy things, but you should check with the DM for their character creation rules.
so id be better off just sticking with mutli choice
So when a paladin says, for example:
- (a) a martial weapon and a shield or (b) two martial weapons
- (a) five javelins or (b) any simple melee weapon
You can choose the (a) or (b) option for each row.
Perosnally i would choose a both times
If your group rolls for starting gold instead, you don't get any of the specified starting equipment.
But some DMs do give additional gold or let you sell your equipment and buy something else instead.
Can you share the link to the character itself instead of the PDF?
Yeah, doesn't look like you finished with your starting equipment.
lance and shield (so i can attack from behind the shield )
I think that's only feasible on horseback.
How do you have 14 hit points dont you have 1 hit die at lvl 1
My bros dragonborn rogue only has 5 🤣
Lance. You have disadvantage when you use a lance to attack a target within 5 feet of you. Also, a lance requires two hands to wield when you aren't mounted.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#SpecialWeapons
f
it lets me wield both shield and lance at same time but? guess sheild would be on my back then?
The site will let you equip whatever whenever.
tsk thats bad for new players
And a shield has to be properly worn to get the benefit.
Haha same for pen & paper. It’s why there’s often a review of sheets before the game starts.
how about halberd? would i be able to poke from behind the shield without putting my guard down/
If the weapon has the "Two-Handed" property, they it will always require two hands to use.
Nope. That’s also a two-handed weapon.
I think polearms generally are, yeah?
Whips got reach, tho. Those are one-handed.
You can view the list of weapons and their properties here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#SimpleMeleeWeapons
dope it dont state if if the weapons req two hands in the sheet atm XD
You need to refer to that weapons table
Lance 10 gp 1d12 piercing 6 lb. Reach, special
dosnt state req two hands?
What does the page say about that Special property?
so what weapon under Martial Melee Weapons could my pally use while keeping the shield up?
Anything that doesn’t require two hands to operate. Longsword is always a good choice.
so like id have my shield up 99% of the time besides probs using buffs ?
Rapier is also pretty good since it’s versatile.
they get multi hit perk since its a speed weapon over somtihng like a warhamer?
Probably. Just keep in mind equipping or unequipping your shield takes an action, so you wouldn’t be able to do much if you’re always swapping your shield in and out.
so i cant just hold the shield up guarding my self while i poke from behind it?
Nope. I’d recommend reading what the properties do. Warhammer also doesn’t have any multi-hit properties.
Are you referring to dual wielding? You’d have to have a light weapon in both hands (so no shield) to do that.
its one or the other?
Some spells require a free hand to perform a somatic gesture. If both of your hands are occupied you generally can’t cast those spells.
Some spells require material components, but paladins can place their holy symbol on their shield allowing them to ignore material components.
I think you need to review the basic rules about combat and also look at the weapons page to learn the properties. Also, set aside your other gaming systems
Seem to be carrying over terminology from other games which do not apply
ye i took a amulet for that reason
But yeah. OptionZero has the right of it.
souls games 😛
alr so recommendations for starting weapon then, knowing im unable to use both shield and weapon at once
You can use a weapon and shield, it just has to not be two-handed
Is improvised fighting something written down?
Yeah. I think it’s in the combat section.
Cheers, bruzza. 👌
Improvised Weapons: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#ImprovisedWeapons
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/105516341 is this comepleted now?
I think you should only have 12 HP, not 14.
why it give me 14?
I'm betting you changed your Hit Point Type to "Manual" before you picked your class.
You can switch it back to Fixed, or go to the Class tab and adjust it manually from there.
As a paladin, you gain the following class features.
- Hit Points at 1st Level: 10 + your Constitution modifier
10 + 2 would make that 12.
Hey guys I was just wondering when I play dnd and I battle a monster do I roll the d20 dice and whoever gets the higher number goes first?
You can change it back to Fixed in your character settings.
What you're referring to is called Initiative.
Yes
str/char +1 (+1 included in stats listed)
str 15
dex 12
con 13
int 8
wis 10
char 16
this are the stats i picked i did change them a few times would that be why?
So when the DM asks for initiative, all players roll a d20 and add their dexterity modifier to the result (plus any other bonuses/modifiers they have that apply).
At the beginning of initiative, every combatant rolls a dexterity check. The highest total goes first.
You can find the rules for initiative here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#TheOrderofCombat
Ok so if I roll my d20 and I get my dexterity modifier and it's higher than the monster do I go first ?
That's not what you've got set on the character sheet itself.
But if those are the numbers you're going with, you should then have 11 max hp.
Correct - the DM will place your character in order of highest to lowest - this will help the DM manage the order in combat or even in general play.
If it's just you and the monster then yes.
Initiative is a tool for the DM and group to use to help with organizing and running combat.
think i posted the og stats i was goinhg with
cons/char +1 (added below)
str 14
dex 12
con 14
int 8
wis 10
char 16
With that, your max HP would be 12.
making my stats even was advised
A constitution score of 14 has a constitution modifier of +2.
You max HP for a level 1 paladin is 10 + your constitution modifier (+2) = 12.
So if I'm the DM and I'm playing a monster what does hit 21 (3d10+5) piercing damage mean and what do I do that with the dice
How do I use that damage in battle ?
If the attack hit, the target takes that damage.
21 damage?
Typically you roll damage only if your attack hits
Yes, 21.
The 21 damage is the mean average of 3d10+5. You use that if you don't want to roll (usually to speed combat up)
Unless they're immune or resistant or vulnerable to piercing damage.
So the monster will do 21 damage without rolling the damage dice ?
If they hit, yes.
If you the DM decide to use that method.
Ok I understand
Or you can roll, which may result in a higher or lower amount of damage.
But on average, those rolls would come out to 21.
But can someone send me a link explaining modifiers and resistance in the game
The rules for damage in general are here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#DamageRolls
Resistance and vulnerability specifically are here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#DamageResistanceandVulnerability
Thank you
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/105516341 couldnt find the fixed options but did find manual change so its set to 12 now, anything im missing (my sheet able to run games now?)
Yeah, looks good to go. 👍
dope cheers for the help
By default level 1 characters have max hit points. You shouldn't need to manually change the character's hp.
You do when character settings + order of operations results in an incorrect value.
yea it was saying my max hp was 14 when my stats said my max should be 12 idk how the builder tool works but should be fixed
same with stating weapons req x no# of hands to wield
Yes it looks like the builder gave you the benefit of the Tough Feat. Maybe it got accidentally applied while you were building the character, as a Variant Human would indeed have a feat?
I wish finding people to play with was easier
Yeah lol
Group finding and scheduling are the true final boss of D&D 😔
It’s harder than uhhhhhh
I literally forgot
Oh my goodness gracious I forgor
Tiamat
There I remembered
Anyone use any cool AI generators to create their character portraits? Struggling with MidJourney and Earth Genasi, don't think it fully understands haha
how do i know if a class has access to all the spells on their list? and do they just have to pick some to prepare depending on their lvl, and a certain modifier??
Blud forgot Tiamat
clerics, druids, artificers, paladins are prepared casters. They prepare from their whole list every longs rest.
Warlocks, Rangers, Bards, Sorcerers, Eldritch knights and arcane tricksters are known casters. they learn and can switch out spells on level up.
wizards are a mix between both but can also learn more spells via scrolls and spellbooks
This^
thanks
Read the class description. It will tell you exactly what spells the class knows, how they are prepared, and how many you get at each level.
So i was reading the players handbook n my partners dnd app the later shows a boomerang and yklwa as weapons but in the book they arent listed
I believe those were added for specific adventures. The boomerang is only there to provide a base for a magic item found in an adventure.
The yklwa is from Tomb of Annihilation.
The only official boomerang is the ||storm|| boomerang from Princes of the Apocalypse.
The generic boomerang only exists in DDB because of a technical limitation, and had to be added to support the official one.
Those weapons dont exist but you can flavor an existing weapon to be those as you desire
I’d probably take a light axe and just call it a boomerang
The yklwa definitely does exist.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/toa/port-nyanzaru#Yklwa
I stand corrected.
Ah thank you you, darn it...ill stick with a druid wooden staff and a sling, axe
How do I learn to run a campaign

- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.

Depends
To join an adventure, you don't need to have the stats & saving throw calculations memorized, right? I'm assuming you pick all those details up and it becomes second nature after a while, is that right?
That depends on the DM and the table. Some may want folks to have a solid grasp of the rules and mechanics so as not to start from zero each time. That doesn't mean memorization; it means comprehension. Others would be willing to work with a new player on developing their knowledge.
It should be written down on your character sheet.
It's always a good idea to be familiar with the vocabulary and core rule mechanics of the game - but much of it can and will be learned through playing the game. But showing some effort in reading the rules and effort in learning will make it more likely folks will want to add you to their games/campaigns.
But different monsters and challenges will have different saving throws and all that, right? You'll need the DM's help to know what number you need to exceed for success. That's my perception, anyway
Yes, you're not expected to know any of that.
I'm almost finished reading the handbook, I'm just far from having it all memorized haha
Monster stats are the DM's purview, not players'.
If you're a player, you don't need to know the monster statblocks. If anything, knowing about the monster statblock would be considered "cheating" (aka meta knowledge).
The DM will decide what rules are in effect and what dice rolls are needed.
Players really only need to know how their character works.
Awesome, that's kind of what I was expecting. I just need to finish getting familiar with the process, then I can try to find a group willing to take a noob under their wing
Most groups are fine taking on new-to-the-game players particularly if that player shows they are willing to learn and most importantly that player vibes well with the rest of the group (social dynamics).
I usually get along with almost anyone, if it's an environment I want to be in. I'm really looking forward to the process, it sounds like so much fun! Thanks, y'all, I appreciate the feedback
@fading horizon remember to have fun
I'm hoping the other group members also help the new people with suggestions for actions during different encounters, is that allowed? Like, I might not realize it's a good idea to take a closer look at a strange root or try to measure/estimate a distance before trying to jump it.
Most groups are fine with gentle suggestions but remember that at the end of the day that's another person's character and they should be in charge of it.
I'm sure seeing what actions other players take and what is successful and what is a waste of time can teach you a lot without direct suggestions
On that note, what I’d suggest is to focus on intent.
Give the group a general idea of what you’d like to do, so that they can then help you figure out your options.
“I want to attack the bandit before he escapes.”
Or “I want to help this player get out of the trouble they’re in.”
Then the party might suggest “You could try to hit the bandit using your longbow, or you could to block his path and go for a melee attack with your rapier.”
after buying a DnD set yesterday and reading the rules it seems very text dump but after looking around it seems to be more block by block building up to make one cohesive game
Nice! Thank you all so much, I really appreciate the feedback & suggestions
Yeah, there’s a whole lot of pieces working together. Glad it’s starting to click, though!
When looking for a new group, is it better to have your hero already created and have your character sheet, or would it be better to find out what classes are already in the group and see what needs you might be able to fill?
It's good to have some character concepts/ideas but not have the specific character generated until you've gotten things squared away with the DM and group you'll be playing with.
Awesome, thanks again!
I’m totally green . How do i join a group ?
#find-a-game can get you started.
Thank you
Welcome!
Hello! Ty! I’m scared
What part are you scared of, exactly?
New people, also a little nervous because….dnd
Most groups are generally accepting of new players, I think.
They were all new at one point, too.
Hi I'm new to dnd but I have played a few campaigns but the group I played within disbanded I'm looking for a new group
If any one wants or needs a new player I'm down to join a campaign
Welcome! #find-a-game can point you in the right direction there.
I’m still trying to understand maximum hit die, so if I start a game at level 5 Warlock, I have to roll the die 5 times, then add my constitution modifier?
No
At level one you dont roll, you take the max value of your hit dice and add your constitution modifier
Warlock is a d8. For first level, you have eight hit points PLUS your constitution modifier
Ok so far?
So you will always have at least 8 at the beginning
So your hp, at level 5, will be calculated as:
8 + Con mod + 4d8 + (Con mod x 4)
if your Con mod is say, a +2, it will look like:
8 + 2 + 4d8 + (2 x 4), so
10 + 4d8 + 8
(Unless your constitution modifier is negative.)
Where did you get the 2 x 4 from
it is the example of your Con mod multiplied by the number of levels you are having to calculate
in this case, the 4 levels after level 1 (since you are level 5)
that sort of calculation will only apply for the circumstance of when you are making a character of at minimum level 3 or above
if it helps, what is your Con modifier for your character?
It is +2
Alrighty, so the example still will apply. The only variable is that you need to roll 4 d8's. After that, whatever those values are, add them together, then add the +8 (the value of your Con mod across 4 levels), then add that to the +10 (your max hp from level 1)
So if I roll four, fives, it would be 38?
correct
10 (level 1 max hp) + 20 (your 4d8 result) + 8 (Con mod across 4 levels) = 38 max hp at level 5
So I would have to roll in front of my dm before I put anything there on the sheet or do I put the equation
if the equation helps for figuring it out, write it down, aye. Your DM may wish for you to roll with them around, but if you have the equation you will be able to calculate your results regardless of what those d8 rolls end up being
Do you know where it says this in the handbook?
for what? Rolling your hit points with your DM around?
No the equation
The eqation is not necessarily in the book. It is more of just using arithmetic to calculate Max HP for a chracter starting out at level 3 or above
At the top of your class features.
Thats hit points at higher levels?
Warlock, for example;
Hit Points
Hit Dice: 1d8 per warlock level
Hit Points at 1st Level: 8 + your Constitution modifier
Hit Points at Higher Levels: 1d8 (or 5) + your Constitution modifier per warlock level after 1st
It says or 5 so I can just put 38 if I don’t feel like leaving it up to the dice?
Hello all
You’d have the hit points at 1st level, plus four at higher levels.
5 would be considered the average value for a d8 hit die, yes
You should confirm with your DM if that’s okay, just to be safe.
Each time you gain a level, you gain 1 additional Hit Die. Roll that Hit Die, add your Constitution modifier to the roll, and add the total (minimum of 1) to your hit point maximum. Alternatively, you can use the fixed value shown in your class entry, which is the average result of the die roll (rounded up).
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#ClassFeaturesandHitDice
But it doesn’t say 1d8 per warlock level where it says hit points at higher levels, where’d you get the 4d8 from
again, the equation I gave you is putting together the 4 levels after your 1st level
Instead of telling you 8+Con Mod + 1d8 + Con Mod + 1d8...etc
I shortened it down for you to the equation provided
so the 4d8 = 1d8 per level
At each level up you get another 1d8 for each warlock level you level up.
Hey all I’m Salmon. I’m new.
I belive u guys I just don’t know how u know that cuz it just says at higher levels its 1d8
Hit Points at Higher Levels: 1d8 (or 5) + your Constitution modifier per warlock level after 1st
Per the info about the class -1d8 + Constitution modifier per warlock level after the 1st.
Which is the same as 4d8 + 4 * con
It’s the distributive property of multiplication.
Shouldn’t it say 1d8 per warlock level after first + con mod per warlock level after first
Which book should I buy? I might get one(spell jammer) or two(anything else 40/under) of them, and I’m wondering what are the best choices?
