I told one of my players to try and come up with something else than a dark haired human fighter with a scruffy beard who’s in his thirties.

I think I might’ve missed that one. I tried to purchase all the character creation options (races, subraces, subclasses, backgrounds, feats, and some spells), so I don’t automatically have all options
She already played a Barbarian once, female even. That was for one session though, where we both were players, and she quickly went back to Male Fighter
Well some of them have been about revenge. Some of them were about just trying new things and trying the adventurer’s life. One of them were a Bounty Hunter looking for a criminal’s head.
And her Rogue is a failed merchant

Well, maybe? I don’t know, really, we never got far enough in any of those campaigns to really get much into anything. Our DM then had a bit of an alcohol problem and would often cancel D&D nights, or he hadn’t prepared anything for his homebrew world, so he ran us through chapter one of Lost Mine of Phandelver (always just chapter 1). Now that I’m the DM, this is the first time we’ve actually got to play beyond level 1 (at least together and in that group, I’ve played in longer campaigns with others)
I’ll try suggesting some of those for her when we get to finish the current campaign (if she even wants to make a new character, that is)

If that is so, the steps could be explained as: doppelgänger infiltrates lair, disguises itself, kills off a kobold, and then the doppelgänger (or maybe another one) takes it away to take that kobold’s place.
I think the relic reveals the doppelgänger though. If you look above “Mr. blue” in that second image, you see the relic but the yellow color is gone from it, signifying it’s use, and the blue-eyed kobold’s position above is turned to “Mr. blue’s” position below. And when this is revealed, the kobolds kill the doppelgänger, symbolized by the two normal kobolds surrounding it and brandishing daggers

it's fun to make puzzles but my main party is so incredibly thick they lived in a town made up entirely of zombies for 24 hours without noticing so I have to keep the puzzles rather watered down

I also have an NPC I’ve used, Hector Abel the monster hunter, who uses a chain whip Castlevania style

I personally think that wizard is one of the most open ended classes in that respect (as long as they are smart) they can really be anything, and it’s always interesting seeing how people perceive the class.

It’s printed on a medium weight cloth from https://www.tinywargames.co.uk/price-list. I’ll get the asset list when I’m at the iMac, but iirc it’s Lapis’ trees and mountains, Elvanos’ cliffs and Caeora’s map icons (recoloured by me).

I'm still working on it. I want to add another array of coils and another arcane device. This has taken many many hours of 3D printing. So all the real effort for me was painting and brain storming how to get the LED effects I want. I didn't keep track of the time it took. It's something I have been slowly working on as this part of the campaign got closer.
It's the base of operations in my game. The big bad has finally figured out where it's located and sent a horde to deal with them.

heroforge isn't at all bad value. It's a nearly fully customisable and posable (advanced posability now) mini that matches your character nearly exactly for what, $20? When getting a mini that doesn't match is $10.

still only 1 plastic mini for 20+ bucks is no value no matter how you try to justify it. Once all parts have assigned hex ID's and are linked together with a hex code done on the website interface. All you have to do is hit print and let the printer do the rest and wait for it to be done. There's nothing complicated. All parts on the webpage are prefabricated in the program. One mini should cost only $1.50 $2 at the most then add shipping on top of that for for a rough total of 7 to 9 bucks at the most.

Yeah, but you've also got to pay peoples wages to run the machines, QA the prints, failure rates due to 3d printing not being a perfect process, cleanup, site costs and hosting, artists and devs to add the new features that they're constantly adding, a shipping team, shipping materials, printer maintenance, printer materials and cleanup materials
You can buy the .stl file for $8 if you have a printer of your own
Plus I'm pretty sure even the basic plastic prints aren't using the same filament/resolution as a home 3D printer

If you had that big of an operation. Then you shouldn't be making a product that won't equal the value spent to make them in the first place. You need other products to do that for you and the mini's are just something a little extra. These isn't like I phones cost of to make is is only $1.25 per unit and they sell the phones at $700+ per unit.

I've bought five .stl files from them and getting them printed myself would've actually been more expensive in resources alone than getting them done by HF. It's just the shipping that tipped the scale

on minis? Absolutely. A few come preprimed like wizkids or bones which they claim doesn't need it. Those be careful with, it can interact weirdly with some primers and go all tacky. Still wash (as in soapy water then clean water) those
Airbrushing on, and brushing on, primer are also options
