Was just showing another user the results I get with my paper minis

#

do you use a standard home printer or a commercial printers?

neon peak
#

Just a regular old HP Envy 4500

sacred zealot
#

I normally do theatre of the mind but I quite like minis for climactic encounters

neon peak
#

I use both

sacred zealot
#

that's good to know davyd. so you could just buy a home printer and go ham one weekend?

neon peak
#

Sure

#

Let me copy over my materials list

I'm back at work on Monday, their laser printers will have some work to do for me 😎

oblique cargo
#

I invested in a bw laser printer at home, because the ink one dried up.... I hadn't found this use for it yet 😊

sacred zealot
#

previously I used cut out squares and counters for my battlemap battles but they were a bit of a hassle to clearly read.

neon peak
#

For PC minis and large or bigger monsters I sandwich mountboard between the front and back

#

for medium or smaller monsters I just fold them over normally

sacred zealot
#

this will give the encounter a bit of value in terms of production

#

thanks for the links and advice!

neon peak

#

Funnily enough, the doors proved to be the most useful

#

Because when doing a dungeon crawl, they make good markers for which doors are open or closed

#

and remind the players that if they want to close a door, they have to actually specify

oblique cargo
#

So you switch out the doors during play?

neon peak
#

Yeah

#

I have about 2 dozen closed and the same number open

#

When they enter a room I put down the closed doors, which then get swapped out when the PCs open them

oblique cargo
#

Cool

#

I just tried switching hot ends in my 3d printer and of course it didn't fit, so FML

neon peak
#

oof

oblique cargo
#

There's something to be said for 2d 😁

neon peak
#

I'd kill for a 3D printer

#

had to get a friend of a friend to get my PC prints

oblique cargo
#

I do enjoy (trying to) paint minis, but I think I'll invest in some real ones. At least for PCs

oblique cargo
#

Yeah, resin is the way to go for PC minis

neon peak
#

Dunno how that paper mini one got in the middle 😛

oblique cargo
#

Fff/fdm makes lines to visible so it's hard to paint, you want to not thin the paint to much so you can cover the lines, but then you cover some detail too

#

We'll see if i get my printer back to working, and I'll try some hero forge or anvl minis. They should be well suited for 3d printing

#

@neon peak are those hero forge?

neon peak
#

Yep

#

Although annoyed that they intro'd oversizing after my player got her firbolg printed 😛

oblique cargo
#

XD

solemn bay
#

Some printers can handle two different materials. I recommend using a water dissolvable one for the supporting structures. That way you won’t have to fight to get your mini out post printing 😉

#

@neon peak I ran into the same problem. Right after I got the minis for the party I dm for HeroForge brought out the advanced positioning and the goblin options, both of which are things I REALLY could have used before.

It's okay though I'm happy enough with the quality of Heroforge that I'm redesigning some of the PCs, this also gives me an excuse to paint minis too so that's a thing.

austere pine

@neon peak awesome! yours is the first i've seen in the wild 😄

neon peak

I printed some extra tentacles as they'll be useful to surround the players ship 😛

#

@austere pine I do love the multi part minis like this and the purple wurm

austere pine
#

Totally! any time the miniatures can support fun mechanics to spice up an encounter it's a win.

#

When I used the worm every round I had the pieces replace each other as the worm moved forward (head moved, body replaced where it was, tail replaced where body was, etc) and gave the body pieces extra armor so it was harder damage, but it was the safest element to attack, and the players knowing they had so many rounds before the tail would move to replace it added some fun dodging in-and-out

And the thing that i really liked, had broken links

cedar bobcat
#

So, I recently got my hands on two rolls of this at a second hand place, anyone know how good they are as far as utility goes?

#

As far as I can tell they are plastic wrapping for books and maps that happen to have a grid paper under them

oblique cargo
#

Looks like the stuff i used to put on my pocket books

#

The grided side comes off and it's sticky?

#

Difficult to apply but makes stuff really durable

cedar bobcat
#

That might come in good handy, happen to know if the grid can be utilized to any good effect?

oblique cargo
#

Personally i just threw it away. I realize now that my wording was fuzzy, it's not the grid part that's sticky it's the clear plastic that's sticky 😊

#

If the squares are inches, maybe try a dry erase marker on it and see if it can be used as a battle map 😊

#

If that doesn't work, maybe a permanent marker and draw your dungeons on it 😊 probably need weights in the corners to keep it down though

acoustic garnet
#

you could make "rulers" or cones/squares/etc. out of it

candid night

Killed my first player. Other players buried him on the mountainside in the jungles of Chult. Each left something personal on the gravesite. I am really no artist so I did my best copy and paste job. Really thinking of letting a professional have a crack at it.

candid night
#

Yeah, it was an intense moment and a lot of PC finger pointing at the end of the session. It'll be interesting to see where the party goes from here. Just happy no one really threw any blame my way. I don't like killing characters but sometimes actions have some pretty nasty consequences.

stone sundial

The first time I killed a character

@solemn bay She's amazing and I want her in my D&D party! The gold looks good, maybe try red to go with the red highlights on her top feathers?

solemn bay

#

and thannnnks ! thats so sweet. you're welcome to use her as an npc if youre inspired haha. want her backstory ?

violet furnace
#

@solemn bay That is so pretty

#

Also I'll probably bug you next month about some work, if you've got time then

solemn bay
#

@violet furnace of course ! i've been waiting for your request hahaha !!!

violet furnace
#

😄

barren iron
#

@solemn bay I'd say that most of the image is absolutely bloody amazing. I think making the straps and cloth feel more solid and heavy and less wispy might help. In addition, I think refining and making the limbs and pose feel more solid would add to the strength of the drawing. Great work!

solemn bay
#

thanks @barren iron i want her clothe to be wispy, she's a fallen queen not meant for battle. i want her to have this hovering, light as a feather look to add to her delicate features. so "solid" really isn't the goal hahaha but great advice still ! though you haven't answered the question. what colour for her armour plate ??? (im kidding thats already plenty) 😄

barren iron
#

hmmm

#

Another thing

#

I think adding some bags/pouches/equipment/pockets/pocket analogues and some nicks and dirt on the cloth would then be a strong addition

solemn bay
#

no offense but that's exactly the opposite of my intention for her.

barren iron
#

hmmm

#

the goblin bard was his own issue

#

Will say though, having the wand is useful for an inventor, especially a gunsmith

#

being able to clean the corrosive residue from black powder quickly is real nice

wicked yoke
#

@solemn bay That bird is beautiful. As for advice, I'd say the gold looks good with the white feathers. Maybe throw on some sapphire engravings in a future drawing with more detail on the armor?

solemn bay
#

mmmmh thats an interesting idea. i might put quartz on her rather than sapphire but yeah it would add something. thanks !

wicked yoke
#

Some kind of jewel inlay, especially seeing as she's a fallen queen, apparently. Perhaps an heirloom piece of ornamental armor.

solemn bay
#

totally

#

cheers !!! you're all awesome i 'm excited to add and try those. i'll post the results tomorrow 😄

wicked yoke
#

Which I totally understand. Gotta look good. My lizard Samurai Rohrouk doesn't wear armor unless it's his parade armor. His normal lord clothes are more stylish, and easier to move about in.

#

I need to get him in a new, but similar outfit.

barren iron
#

Also @solemn bay while you're adding final touches, the character's left hand and leg as well as the head plumes might use a bit of touching up; there's some overlap shenaniganry going on with the armor/wing feathers that I suspect is just left over from the drawing process

flint ridge

My question, are you using the DDB overlay, if so make sure to leave some room.

violet furnace
#

The names are something you'll see allll the time, you'll eventually know what they are and will get annoyed to keep seeing them 😃

marsh flame
#

@flint ridge A good point... I should keep that in mind.

#

@violet furnace 🤔 What I could do is create the nameplates as a different layer and fade it in/out occasionally using OBS

copper ravine
#

@marsh flame

  1. I would go with dark backgrounds on the nameplates
  2. I would make the name plates take up less space, and increase the size of the cameras and the center piece.
  3. Stick with character names only. Leave twitter names in the description on the channel. Maybe rotate in the player name/twitch handle, but for me personally... character name is way more important.

While I love his take on this scene. We all lost it on the encounter with the nothic and the quick sketch he did, either I did a poor job of describing it, or the players just got crazy in their interpretation, either way they nicknamed him fred and made a deal with him.

I have a rocketbook. Never used it though.

neon peak
#

I don't know if I'd buy one of the books, I've ordered the tags to use on my whiteboard

#

I do a lot of D&D planning on it, so it'd be nice to be able to easily digitise it

copper ravine
#

Wife got it for me for christmas just cause I said, "That's neat." When I read the kickstarter.

neon peak
#

I've been tempted to get a disc binding hole punch and make my own DM notebook like what The Rook & The Raven make

#

And with these scannable pages, I might just do that

copper ravine
#

I just don't like writing things down. Prefer to use my chromebook or pc.

neon peak
#

I've been writing things down since I started DM'ing

#

For one of my campaigns, I would copy the DM style notes to an in-game journal that the players could reference

#

I've kinda given up on that of late as I haven't had the time to keep it up to date

#

I've recently ordered a new laptop, a 2in1 model, so I'll probably start using that more at the table

that original is A4 from a 6x6 A4 sheet hand drawn map, so there's lots more detail.

Yea, envoys are good for bards, sorcerers, & warlocks. Basically just spellcasters. Which is unfortunate. I’ve always wanted to see a very charismatic fighter or barbarian. Some sort of strength-based class who’s just a real smooth-talker

So I’m writing a book based off the campaign I’m in, from my characters perspective. Let’s just say it’s interesting. “Ping Pong had saved one slug and snail in her trousers. She, well, took them off and threw them at the demon, which exploded. Thankfully Ping Pong’s… feminine facial hair, had covered her… bits. I gave her a set of common clothes so at least she was somewhat decent”

@neon peak do you use tutorials or just make it all yourself?

neon peak

Just myself

I took the map from DDB into photoshop and scaled it to 1 square = 1 inch

I then exported it as a PDF and poster printed it

#

So I had a bunch of A4s that I stuck together

#

I placed that on top of the foamboard and used a hole punch to mark the corners

#

Cut it out and then drew in the lines using the pdf as a guide

#

The hardest part was cutting out ||the caves as they're so wiggly and I went through so many blades||

thin relic
#

I would love to have the poster pdfs if you are willing to post them for maps you do

thin relic
#

Oh that is true. Well I do own them so I guess I'll have to make it all myself

neon peak
#

@thin relic The process in photoshop is fairly simple; you load the image up and set the rule scale to inches. Measure how big a grid square is (in inches) and then divide 1 by that number. Multiply the result by 100 and that's the percentage you want to scale the image up or down by

#

Then export as a PDF and open in Adobe Reader

Print; poster

Made a deed to Tresendar Manor for my group, just wish they would stop giving fake names to everyone. Signing off as “Ravioli” might be funny in the moment but could bring problems at a later time when you have to prove ownership 😆

Stole bits and pieces of text from different sources to make it sound official 😃

USB ports and A/C outlets for players, 41" flat screen center console with a plexiglass cover. Bluetooth soundbar under that, cooling fans for obvious reasons. Going to network a raspberry pi or two so we can relay quick messages around the table, recycling a bunch of our old screens and keyboards.

The benefits of being in a household where my room mates and I are all IT guys.

Wish I had friends who would actually play with me so I had a reason to build something like this

The best idea that I've had was doing it as a service for folks. Pay me for labor, buy the materials, I'll get you something sweet.

@unborn mica find a group and then befriend them

#

That's what I did with my latest group; I put out a post on our apartment complex's message board "Hey, wanna learn D&D?"

#

Now I've made a bunch of new friends and we play every fortnight

#

Matt Colville wisely said "it's easier to make friends our of your D&D group than make a D&D group out of your friends"

#

And from experience, this is true

The Skyhorn Lighthouse Campaign came to a close (It was a one shot after all). A little side bonus of the storyline is My Air Genasi Bard Wisp got so many shark surplus she actually put up a stall to sell them. Hope my understanding of Common Font is okay in here.

@neon peak this is the best thing I've ever heard xD

Sadly, I wanted to spend some time having fun with my friends, just turns out that for then "Fun" and "me" don't fit well on the same sentence

I have 2 other tables that are doing really well, one I met mostly trough r/lfg and there is an old friend of mine, other is at uni with some newer friends, and they love playing with me, but sometimes i just wish my friends from a long time would enjoy it too

So any good artists who would sketch me my iconic character?

I'm sure there are some people you could commission on here

Only have the hero forge screenshot

twitter is also pretty good for finding artists with commission slots

There's also a couple of Reddit boards dedicated to commissions

The heroforge mini is good, but you might have to provide some other references

south sail
#

Ok. Thanks. I just don't want someone who will butcher it lol.

steel yoke
#

Usually an artist will have a portfolio that will give you a sense of their style

#

I'd recommend the one I commissioned last year but I don't think he's taking commissions atm

agile rock
#

@south sail I love getting commissions of my characters! My best recommendation is put together a google doc that can break down your whole character, and use lots of reference pictures. This picture is what the hair looks like, this is what the sleeves of the jacket look like etc. It makes it sooo much easier on the artist, and you'll usually get something accurate to what you're imagining the more specific you are. 😄

plain badger
#

Hero forge only give you a basic visual. The artist will probably need some details like skin colour, eye colour, or maybe the entire back story ;P

turbid fiber
#

are you just using grid foam board and a hot glue gun on that?

neon peak
#

I drew the grid myself

#

But yeah, foamboard and hot glue

#

I'm dreading the roof, as good as my geometry, it's going to be a serious challenge

turbid fiber
#

Build your rafters uniform and the roof should fall into place pretty easily

neon peak
#

It's more the chamfering to get the pieces to align, plus the angles of the 2 intersecting roof lines

#

Those angles

turbid fiber
#

eh do the long part as one big piece. then you are just cutting at what ever angle is your rise is at the corner it touches in the building

#

if you keep it all at 45* you could do it all in like 3-4 cuts 😛

neon peak
#

That's what I'm thinking

#

yeah, 45 degrees ftw

#

Still gotta do the basement and caves, haven't decided on how I'm going to do the cave walls, or even if at all

#

I'm thinking mountboard might be the best bet for the cave walls cos they're so bendy

I saw a good method of making cave walls once, let me see If i can get the video

here, this video is great
