As a fellow engineer who is also suffering with incompetent groupmates, heres what I would suggest:

  • As soon as you get a task with your group, inform them of what should be done. Someone must take the initiative, and everyone in your group knows that - but they probably wont act - so you have to speak up and divide the tasks into smaller tasks.

  • Let people choose their task or part on a 'first come first served' basis, for a few reasons

    1. Your teammates feel like they are actively making decisions, and will be motivated to work
    2. People will most likely choose things they can do, if you know someone who is good at many things, let them pick last so that the other people get something they can do
    3. Its their choice so they will bear the consequences if they do not fullfil them properly
  • Assign realistic deadlines that you and your teammates can finish, making sure you have some spare time in case someone forgets something

  • Start early and do not wait for 3 days before the submission date to begin work, you will feel stressed and most of the workload will be given off to people who care in an effort to speed up stuff (so the lazy people wont do anything)

Here are some things youd need as a leader:

  • Being understanding
  • Being tolerable
  • Not being too harsh or mean
  • Be a teamplayer and make sure everyones opinions are heard
  • Clear-minded (you should know what needs to be done in what order and in what method)
