You know that moment in your life where you stumble upon a few words that you just instantly ‘click’ with? The moment you realise, Oh my gosh, that’s precisely the person I am! For me, that moment was when I stumbled upon this quote, "Curiosity is the wick in the candle of learning" by William Ward. Granted, this quote isn’t necessarily philosophical, nor is it teeming with sophisticated vocabulary; however, such simplicities describe me. Or rather, the vast expanse of my mind. I am not some prodigy born from the womb with a violin in my hand, nor am I a genius who revels in the glory of mathematics (though I do enjoy some trigonometry from time to time). Instead, I am simply NAME, a simple girl with an overflowing sense of curiosity.
It was curiosity that produced my plethora of hobbies, one of which was my involvement in the student council at my high school as the official event manager. Throughout my 4 years of serving the student council, I worked on many major events, many of which required high levels of organisation and leadership, qualities that will prove useful in the hospitality scene. Furthermore, being the oldest child in a family of six has exposed me to taking care of young infants since I was a measly 9-year-old. Hospitality is essentially a second-nature occurrence for me, which will prove to be helpful when managing patients in the future.
It was also indeed curiosity that started the small flame of interest that fueled a raging fire of passion for discovery, biology, and medicine. My interest in medicine started quite a bit later than you’d expect. Initially, my interest was rooted in biology. I found myself learning the basics and yearned to learn so much more. I loved learning about how my body worked, how each cell and neuron linked to form this massive system that works so harmoniously. Any unknown topic I stumbled upon fascinated me. This newfound interest in biology led me to discover YouTuber Doctor Mike, a family medicine doctor based in the US. His style of explanation, paired with interesting topics, really boosted my interest in medicine day by day. Though I confess that, merely being a high school student, I didn’t understand half the words he used, however, the concepts I grasped quite easily. I began thinking about what a profession in medicine would entail. Of course, there are the hard hours and difficult all-nighters present in my future, but through all that, I find myself thinking of the end result—the place I’d end up in should I choose to go down this path. A future where I’ll not only be able to be of assistance to many people but also a future in which I’m able to constantly learn from experiences. I thrive in a learning environment, where curiosity fuels my everyday work, and I believe the medical field has exactly what I’m yearning for.
With my unwavering dedication, passion and preparedness, I believe I’m ready to take the next step in my journey of pursuing medicine and hope you’ll consider me as a student in your university
